Ex-Everton ace drops huge Duncan Ferguson claim

Former Everton star Marcus Bent believes that Duncan Ferguson should be given the chance to take the job at Goodison Park in the coming weeks.

The former striker has weighed in on the club’s hunt for a new boss following the departure of Carlo Ancelotti to Real Madrid.

Reports suggest that Everton could make a move to appoint former Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez, which would make him the first boss to manage both Merseyside clubs.

However, Bent, who played for Everton between 2004 and 2006, believes that Ferguson ought to be given the chance to take the reigns.

The former Everton striker was the assistant to Ancelotti and he took over as caretaker manager in 2019 following the sacking of Marco Silva, famously guiding the club to a 3-1 win over Chelsea in his first game in charge.

Bent believes that the Scot, who played for the club between 1994 and 1998, and 2000 and 2006, has his finger on the pulse at the club and is perfectly sited to replacing the Italian.

Speaking exclusively to The Transfer Tavern, he said: “Duncan’s been there under Ancelotti and the fans are going crazy about him going, not going crazy but obviously they were looking forward to him being there with the new stadium and stuff.

“But Duncan being behind him and knowing what he wants to achieve and wants to go forward with, I think Duncan would be amazing for the club, especially the passion and the thoughtfulness and the years that he’s been within the club. I think everyone respects him.”

Bent also believes that Everton legend Tim Cahill could come in and help Ferguson make a real mark on Merseyside.

He added: “Yes, alright, he would be a new manager, and they’re talking about Tim Cahill coming in alongside him, to back him up, who is an Australian legend, an Everton legend, he works in Dubai at the minute, learning his trade.

“It’s new, it’s free, it’s not a given with Ancelotti, Real Madrid, he’s won trophies, the money he was going to be given this year to go forward and build a team, I think Dunc would know where he was going, he would have his own dreams, his own way of going but to be schooled and be seen to be the number two behind Ancelotti, I think Dunc needs to be given a chance.”

Boycott puts Ganguly through his paces

One may not admire his batting against true fast bowling, but one can never complain that he is reluctant to take tips from former cricketers

Special Correspondent18-Apr-2002One may not admire his batting against true fast bowling, but one can never complain that he is reluctant to take tips from former cricketers. Whether he will be able to execute those tips on the field is another question altogether.Twenty-four hours before the second Test Sourav Ganguly, the Indian captain, was seen in Geoffrey Boycott’s room with Sumit, the Indian touring team’s video-analyst. They were carrying the video-cassette of the third day’s play at the Bourda Oval, Guyana. No prizes for guessing that Ganguly was seeking advice from one of the finest of openers. And for his Prince of Kolkata, of course, Boycott had plenty of time. As the screen began to show how Ganguly got out, the Yorkshireman remarked, “See, you are moving your feet twice before playing the ball. First it is the back foot, then the front. That is why, while facing the ball, your body weight is being divided into two and keeping you in a locked position from where you can’t execute even the simplest of strokes.”So saying, he showed how to shadow and keep the body weight in one of his legs. “You have to do it whenever you get time. The world now knows that you are not comfortable against the lifting delivery. If you want to be one of the best batsmen, you have to practice more,” said Boycott. “What I showed you, try to do that in the nets. Concentrate hard on the wicket. Say to yourself that you are not going to gift your wicket. Prepare yourself mentally to play big innings. It can’t happen overnight. Maybe you will need one or two more Tests, but keep on trying.Boycott did not tone down his usual bluntness in advising the beleaguered Indian skipper. “Frankly speaking, the way your feet were moving in Guyana, I was not sure whether you had practiced hard before coming to this tour. I simply can’t think that someone can come to tour the Caribbean without solid homework.”When the Indian captain was about to leave the room, his biggest supporter said, “It would be better if you don’t go in at number three now. Go in at five. First prepare yourself for that spot and then go back to the one drop. This is your side. If the skipper looks shattered, it does not go well with the body language of the team. So to win this series, you’ve to bat confidently.”When Ganguly had left the room, this correspondent asked whether he would continue to bat at number three. Ganguly said, “He said so and he had his logic. I could not bat well in the first Test, while Dravid saved the match for us. But I am still thinking. One thing I can assure you is that whether I go in at three or five, I’ll score runs in this tour. Definitely”.Ganguly sounded confident, but it remains to be seen whether that confidence will be enough to garner him runs on this tour.

Havant ECB Cup washout – Rowledge win

Havant are still no closer to reaching the semi-finals of the ECB Club Championship after their seventh round tie with Stanmore was abandoned for a second time yesterday (SUN)

Mike Vimpany (as published in Daily Echo)04-Aug-2002Havant are still no closer to reaching the semi-finals of the ECB Club Championship after their seventh round tie with Stanmore was abandoned for a second time yesterday (SUN).The original meeting between the clubs in North London last weekend was called off after eight overs when the Stanmore pitch was declared too dangerous for play. The tie was switched to Havant Park yesterday (SUN) – only to be abandoned once again when a post tea-time cloudburst totally flooded the square and outfield. When the rains came, Stanmore were 5-0 after two overs in reply to Havant’s 185-6.The local Southern Electric Premier League club built themselves a solid position through Richard Hindley (51) and Andy Perry, but Paul Gover (32 not out) lost several partners after Steve Snell (42) had been caught playing a reckless reverse sweep. With conditions far too wet for a `bowl out’, the ECB will have to decide today (MON) on how to decide the twice delayed quarter-final.Saffron Walden are scheduled to visit the winners next Sunday.ROWLEDGE JUST ONE STEP AWAY FROM VILLAGE FINALRowledge have put their Southern Electric Premier League Division 2 relegation worries behind them by reaching the semi-finals of the National Village Championship. They moved to within one match of a Lord’s final by beating Langleybury, the powerful Hertfordshire League club, by 38 runs yesterday (SUN).David Lloyd (55), Shaun Woodhouse (40) and veteran Chris Yates (30) helped Rowledge reach 193-7 off 40 overs.Langleybury were dismissed for 155.

Journalist provides key update on Raphinha

Liverpool are yet to make any contact with Leeds United over the signing of Raphinha, according to Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Graham Smyth.

The Lowdown: Raphinha linked with move away

The 24-year-old is reportedly wanted by Liverpool this summer, following a superb season at Elland Road, having joined from Rennes.

Raphinha was arguably one of Leeds’ best players in an excellent first year back in the Premier League, dazzling supporters with his trickery and enjoying 15 goal contributions (six goals, nine assists).

The Latest: Journalist provides update

Taking to Twitter to give an update on the current situation, Smyth offered Whites fans some encouragement, claiming Liverpool ‘definitely’ have interest but ‘have never made contact’ regarding signing the Brazilian.

While he does also admit that the Reds will definitely be interested in the idea of snapping up the winger, any potential deal seems a long way off, adding ‘you have to imagine’ a huge bid would be required.

The Verdict: Exciting

As Smyth alludes to, only a massive offer will be able to prise Raphinha away from Leeds this summer – whether or not Liverpool have those funds remans to be seen.

In an ideal world, the Whites star would remain at the club for many years to come, but unless the team are pushing for European football every season, that seems unlikely.

Raphinha looks to have an incredibly high ceiling, so the sad likelihood is that he will end up moving on to a more successful club.

That said, if the Whites can get a few more good seasons out of him and then cash in for huge profit that would have to be considered a success, so Smyth’s claim that any immediate approach seems unlikely is hugely encouraging.

In other news, Leeds have reportedly set their sights on an established international midfielder this summer. Find out who it is here.

Outsider Picks for Euro 2021

Euro 2021 is around the corner and the tournament is set to receive record viewing figures, with the expanded competition welcoming more countries than ever before.

The event has a rich history of providing celebration stories for underdogs, from Greece’s unprecedented win in 2004 right through to Portugal’s 2016 victory despite not winning a single group match.

With a whopping 24 teams taking part in this year’s event, there’s more chance than ever that favourites will be undone by surprise results and it’s wise to expect the unexpected.

There can be real benefits for bettors in backing longshots as the odds often outweigh the likeliness of the result. OLBG are masters at finding the best value Euro bets, and they’ve created a list of tempting enhanced offers for punters to back.

With bookies creating new markets for their sites daily, there’s often benefit to be found in some higher odds markets. Here we pick out which markets are the best outsiders to consider backing at Euro 2021.

Best Young Player – Declan Rice

At 20/1, there is real value on Declan Rice to be named the Best Young Player of the Tournament at Euro 2021.

England are one of the favourites for the tournament and Rice is a nailed-on starter at the heart of Gareth Southgate’s England squad. Rice himself has had a breakthrough campaign which has seen him lead his West Ham side into qualification for European football next season, despite being written off earlier on. Chelsea are poised to make an offer for Rice which will be a blow for West Ham, but it’s rumoured their scouts already have a replacement lined up.

Central midfielders are often preferred by panellists when awards are given for player of the tournament, too. The inaugural award was given to Portugal’s Renato Sanches, and the youngster had a similar role to Rice, supporting a talented attacking line. If England do well, that will be a direct reflection on Rice’s ability to control and dominate the centre of the pitch.

The same logic is applied to the Player of the Tournament award. Every Player of the Tournament has been a central midfielder, Rice’s natural position, with the exception of Euro 2016 which was won by Antoine Griezmann.

Concede Most Tournament Goals – Hungary

Hungary are priced at 4/1 to concede the most goals at the tournament and despite their relatively impressive recent form, this looks like a certainty.

Hungary have been unfortunate to have been drawn in Group F – this year’s Group of Death – alongside three genuine contenders for the Euro 2021 title. With fixtures against France, Germany and Portugal, Hungary will be lucky to get even a point from the three group games. Marco Rossi’s side will come up against some of the greatest strikers on the planet in Kylian Mbappe, Timo Werner and Cristiano Ronaldo, all of which will be eager to add to their bulging international goal records.

Hungary don’t have any players who are widely known and have an inexperienced backline with little history of playing against quality opposition. It is likely that goal difference will be a key factor when deciding who progresses to the knockout phase of the competition for this group and, as a result, it’s expected that Hungary will not be let off the hook at any stage.

Top Assists – Jack Grealish

Jack Grealish has benefited from an exceptional season as Aston Villa captain and the progress of the team is clearly down to his influence and ability.

Grealish is fleet of foot and full of flair – perfect for a creative force and one who can create chances from nothing. The 25-year-old was the most fouled player in the Premier League, and that’s testimony to his trickery. If a goal is scored directly from the free kick or penalty which Grealish has earned, the assist is registered to him and that’s one key reason why the lofty 16/1 odds bookies have on him to finish as the Top Assister are tempting.

England have a relatively simple group in Euro 2021 playing Croatia, Scotland and Czech Republic in Group D. The talented forward line of Harry Kane, Jadon Sancho and Phil Foden should attract opposition defences and allow pockets of space for Grealish to operate in which he wouldn’t usually have when playing for Villa.

A good performance in Euro 2021 could also put Grealish in the shop window and attract a bid from one of Europe’s top clubs. The playmaker has already been linked with a summer move to Manchester City but it wouldn’t be a surprise to see other suiters try to acquire his signature.

Jewell backs Howe for the Celtic job

In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, former Wigan Athletic manager, Paul Jewell, has claimed that he can’t understand why Eddie Howe has not yet been appointed as Celtic’s new manager.

Kevin Phillips has claimed that Celtic are waiting until the last weekend of the SPFL season to announce Howe as their new manager, which would allow him to start a complete fresh after this poor season for the Bhoys.

However, Howe’s representatives have made it clear that the former Bournemouth manager will not be accepting any job offers until at least the summer, as he continues to take time over his next move.

Speaking on why he can’t understand the point in delaying Howe’s announcement as manager and how it is something difficult to keep quiet, Jewell exclusively told FFC:

“If the deal has been agreed or was agreed a while ago, then I don’t know why it hasn’t been made public, but sometimes clubs want the manager to start next season afresh.

“Maybe Kevin Phillips knows something that I don’t but I think things like this are very difficult to keep quiet. If Eddie does get the job then it’ll be great for him.”

Celtic have experienced a poor season by their standards as they could have won a record 10th league title in a row, but instead, they surrendered their crown to Rangers who won their 55th SPFL title.

Whoever is appointed as Celtic’s new manager will have to rebuild the club and squad and this will have to be done without long-standing captain Scott Brown, who is joining Aberdeen as a player-coach the summer.

Wolves fans blast Podence vs Burnley

A number of Wolves fans have been critical of the display of Daniel Podence in their Premier League game at home to Burnley at Sunday lunchtime.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s men were in for a shock at Molineux as a hat-trick from Chris Wood put the Clarets 3-0 up at half-time. Ashley Westwood added a late fourth on a miserable afternoon for the hosts at Molineux.

There were some very poor performances in Old Gold on the day, but perhaps none more so than Podence, who struggled throughout and was duly taken off for Vitinha just shy of the 70-minute mark.

The 25-year-old lost out on 90% of his duels in the match and failed to record a single successful dribble, key pass or cross. He also lost possession of the ball on nine separate occasions, earning him a measly 6.2 overall rating on Sofascore.

Wolves fans on Podence display

These Wolves fans blasted Podence on Twitter, with one supporter going as far as to claim that the Portuguese forward was a ‘liability’:

“Podence has been a liability in the last three games, his distribution is the Hermes of professional footballers, it’s like playing ten against 12 when he’s in the team”
