Levir Culpi analisou a situação do Fluminense.

Gers’ Helander attracts PL interest

As per Sportbladet, Leicester City are interested in signing Glasgow Rangers defender Filip Helander.

Leicester eye Helander

The Foxes are currently flying in the Premier League – they are third in the table and are in with a very good chance of making the Champions League next term.

In preparation for the next campaign, they are said to be eyeing a move for the £1.8m-valued Sweden international (Transfermarkt). Aston Villa are also believed to be in pursuit.

Must stay at Ibrox

Helander struggled with a foot injury last season that kept him out for much of the campaign (Transfermarkt) and has missed yet to lose a league game with Helander in the side since he made the switch to Glasgow in 2019.

Steven Gerrard’s side have lost just two games in all competitions this campaign – Helander did not play a minute in either of them. The manager is clearly delighted with the former Bologna man, calling him “outstanding” (via The Glasgow Times) earlier this term.

At 27 years of age, he is arguably at his peak and still has a good few years ahead of him. Connor Goldson has received the most praise at centre-back, even being tipped to win the club’s Player of the Year award, but perhaps Helander is the true lynchpin at the heart of the defence. Rangers must make sure he does not leave the club this summer.

Brownhill similar to Aston Villa’s McGinn

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, former Aston Villa midfielder Lee Hendrie has revealed his admiration for Burnley’s Josh Brownhill, a player he would love to see at Villa Park in the near future.

Brownhill has been a regular in Sean Dyche’s side this season, and it appears that his displays have not gone unnoticed, with a couple of Premier League clubs now said to be circling.

According to TEAMtalk, one of those clubs is Aston Villa, who have been scouting the 25-year-old midfielder in recent months.

For Hendrie, Brownhill would be a great addition to Dean Smith’s squad, more so than Sheffield United’s Sander Berge — another midfielder currently being linked with a move to Villa Park.

Discussing Villa’s reported interest in Brownhill in an exclusive interview with FFC, Hendrie said:

“Josh Brownhill, I think he is a fabulous player, I really do. Out of [Sander] Berge and him, I’d take Brownhill all day just because Josh Brownhill reminds me of John McGinn.

“He’s very energetic, he’s very neat and tidy on the ball, he gets up and down the pitch well and you know what you’re getting when you’re getting a player from Burnley, Sean Dyche, what he expects. And, obviously, he’s proved that he can do this step up, coming from Bristol City, so I’d certainly take him all day.”

McGinn has been one of Villa’s standout players since joining the club from Scottish outfit Hibernian back in 2018, having a huge impact in the middle of the park for them.

The Scotland international scored seven goals and provided nine assists during Villa’s successful 2018/19 Championship campaign, helping them earn a return to English football’s top flight. If the Villans do sign Brownhill and he ends up performing at a level close to McGinn’s, then they would have certainly acquired a very useful player.

Kane and Haaland are similar players

In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, former Premier League midfielder Lee Hendrie has drawn comparisons between reported Manchester City target Erling Haaland and Tottenham’s Harry Kane.

Haaland, who has been in incredible form for Borussia Dortmund this season, is currently being linked with a big-money move to the Premier League, with Manchester City said to be leading the chase for the 20-year-old’s signature.

Haaland has already reached double figures for the campaign in both the Bundesliga and Champions League, easily putting him in the world’s best No.9 debate.

Kane, who has also posted some very good numbers this term, is another player who can easily be mentioned in that conversation, and Hendrie sees similarities between the Tottenham man and his potential rival for the 2021/22 Premier League Golden Boot.

Discussing the two players exclusively with FFC, the ex-Aston Villa star said:

“He’s [Haaland] got bags of ability, scores goals. He really reminds me of Kane in certain ways of his play, but the difference I feel with Haaland is I just feel that he’s going to be the next best thing. He’s a young man that’s bounced onto the scene. It’s a difficult one to pick [out of the two].”

Goals have hardly been hard to come by for Manchester City this season. Pep Guardiola’s side are the Premier League’s top scorers with 64 goals, so the thought of the Champions League quarter-finalists adding a player of Haaland’s quality to their ranks should really scare the likes of Chelsea and Liverpool.

West Ham target Leeds’ Meslier

David Moyes should urge West Ham United to sign Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier as the London Stadium natives line up potential Lukasz Fabianski replacements.

What’s the word?

According to Football Insider, Irons scouts are keeping tabs on Meslier’s situation at Elland Road with a view to launching a summer swoop for the 21-year-old shot-stopper.

Fabianski, who turns 36 in April, is currently due to become a free agent at the end of the season, with his current £65,000-per-week terms set to expire in June.

The Poland international has held talks with the east London outfit over a new deal, but is yet to reach an agreement to extend his time in claret and blue into a fourth campaign, per Football Insider.

West Ham are confident of retaining Fabianski beyond the current term due to a one-year option included in the deal struck upon his £7m arrival from Swansea City in 2018, but are keen to carry out due diligence by weighing up potential replacements.

Meslier has been identified as a top talent who can develop into an ‘outstanding’ option between the sticks, having impressed the Hammers’ talent spotters with his efforts for Leeds since turning an initial season-long loan into a permanent move for £5m last summer.

The Lorient product has started 25 of Leeds’ 26 Premier League games since the west Yorkshire outfit were promoted to the top flight last year, keeping eight clean sheets – including against Everton during the Whites’ 1-0 win at Goodison Park in November.

West Ham have also been linked with Manchester United’s Dean Henderson, Sheffield United’s Aaron Ramsdale and Bologna FC 1909’s Lukasz Skorupski as potential options to replace Fabianski should he leave the London Stadium.

Should West Ham sign Meslier?

West Ham moving to sign Meslier from Leeds could see Moyes and David Sullivan acquire a long-term number one for the Irons, as the France under-21 international has shown a great deal of promise during his first year in the Premier League.

Only West Bromwich Albion’s Sam Johnstone has made more saves (107) than Meslier (99) in the top flight this term, while the Leeds star’s performances have been at such a level that the £10.8m-rated ace boasts SofaScore’s fifth-best average rating for a goalkeeper at 7.04.

Fabianski, who has made 69 saves – the 16th-most, has averaged a 6.85 rating and has made one-third of the number of successful runs out (3) as Meslier (9) has to date, per SofaScore.

Despite being labelled as a “raw” shot-stopper by former England goalkeeper David James on Sky Sports’ The Football Show (8/1) earlier this season, via Yorkshire Evening Post, Meslier has also been lauded by Ben Foster for his performances behind a Leeds backline which ensures he stays busy.

“I’ve watched a few games of him this season and he doesn’t strike you as a big strong kind of goalie, does he?” Foster said on Sky Sports (13/2, 09:35, via HITC). “He looks sort of skinny and sort of fragile. But honestly, he is flying, some of the saves he’s been making. World-class saves, proper world-class saves.

“His first season in the Premier League as well, he’s been on fire. Leeds, as well with their style of play, he’s going to have stuff to do and he’s going to be busy. He’s pulled out the saves and he’s kept a few clean sheets as well.”

Meslier’s stock will only be expected to continue to rise all the while he excels at Elland Road, so if Moyes wants the £20,000-a-week colossus at the London Stadium, West Ham will have to swoop for his services this summer regardless of Fabianski’s immediate future.

CPFC: Fans react to Hannam news

Fans of Crystal Palace have been reacting to a post on Twitter, which relayed the news of Reece Hannam signing a contract extension at the south London club.

According to a statement on the Crystal Palace website, the 20-year-old left-back has put pen to paper on a new deal with Roy Hodgson’s side, which will see him remain at Selhurst Park until the summer of 2023, with the option to extend a further year.

It is said that the defender, who joined Palace last summer, has been a ‘key member’ of Shaun Derry’s U23 side this season, featuring in 11 fixtures over which he has provided his teammates with four assists.

While the youngster is yet to make his debut for Hodgson’s first-team, he has featured in a matchday squad, being an unused substitute in the club’s 0-0 draw with Fulham towards the end of February.

And, after Crystal Palace relayed news of Hannam’s contract extension on Twitter, fans of the club flocked to have their say on the matter, with many urging Hodgson to include the youth prospect in the club’s upcoming Premier League fixtures.

So, what exactly did these Crystal Palace fans have to say in reaction to the club’s post regarding Reece Hannam?

Derby County: Fans slate Marshall

Many Derby County fans are slating David Marshall following his performance in the Championship match against Nottingham Forest.

The Rams have started to pull away from the relegation battle with Wayne Rooney at the helm and if you include their 1-1 draw against Forest on Friday night, they have only lost one in the last five, winning three of those games (SofaScore).

It was definitely a night to forget for Marshall though, as the goalkeeper picked up a 5.7 rating (SofaScore) and this was the lowest of anyone on the pitch. He made a brutal mistake which led to the opening goal by the Reds, allowing James Garners bobbling strike to squirm under him. To make matters worse for the Scotland international, he picked up an injury just before the end of the first half, so had to be taken off for Kelle Roos.

His replacement managed to get a rating of 7.0 as he made four saves, three of which were inside the box, and this form might warrant Rooney to select the Dutchman ahead of Marshall, even when he returns from injury.

Here is how Derby fans reacted:

“Poor. No way should that go through Marshall! #dcfc”

“People will make up excuses, but Marshall is going to end up costing us this game. And he doesn’t actually deserve to be in the side. Fact. #dcfc #dcfcfans”

“David Marshall has fully bottled this game”

Credit: @linford_sam

“Went flat after conceding that goal, Marshall could of done better! Prior to that we were the dominant side, think we need 2 up top today maybe swap bird for gregory”

Credit: @viksinghdosangjh

“If knight scores then imo it’s a different game completely. Marshall made a howler form a poor shot and since then Forrest have completed bossed us should be 2 up if it wasn’t for a alert Roos need to step it up a gear”

Credit: @ConnorDcfc

“A commanding start but then we completely switch off at the set piece. Poor from Marshall but he knows that. Defending was inexcusable, much for Rooney and Co to ponder at the break. A quick start needed in the second half.”

Leeds: Helder Costa has been robbing Andrea Radrizzani blind

When certain players make the jump from Championship football to the Premier League they suddenly become a liability.

There are some prime examples throughout the years, players who seemingly make a better career for themselves in the second tier.

You only need to look at Anthony Knockaert and Matej Vydra. The former has contributed to 72 goals in the Championship compared to just 12 in the Premier League. Vydra, meanwhile, has 87 goal involvements in the second tier. His record in the top-flight is just 12 as well.

This is similar for Helder Costa, a dynamic winger capable of ingenious moments. Those are all too infrequent, however.

The Portuguese is one of a number of players who haven’t managed to elevate their qualities on the big stage and is strikingly similar to Knockaert.

In the Championship for Wolves, he is a ball of energy and has provided 39 goal contributions at that level. In the Premier League, though, he’s scored twice and contributed four assists.

Costa is a man who has had a troublesome few years and it begs the question, why did Leeds spend £15m on him?

Considering his second-tier record, landing him on loan last season was certainly not a bad idea. However, he never really reached the dizzy heights he did in the Midlands, netting only five times in all competitions at Elland Road.

It was form that saw him mercilessly slated. Former Whites man Noel Whelan said: “Costa has much more to give. He has been a bystander at times. He needs to be far more involved and much more effective in his defensive play.”

The trouble is, Costa hasn’t given much more to this Leeds side.

His start to the 2020/21 campaign was actually fairly impressive. He assisted a goal against Liverpool on the opening weekend and then bagged twice versus Fulham just a week later. Since then, though, he has provided the one assist.

Clearly, Costa is being found out again. The 26-year-old hasn’t played since the defeat against West Ham and rumours are starting to circulate over his future. Kevin Phillips commented this week: “It is a big statement that he has not featured in the last two games. It suggests to me that come January, if there is an offer, Bielsa may look at it.”

Of course, it would be a drastic measure to sell so soon, but there are certainly reasons to agree with Phillips here.

The fact of the matter is that Leeds’ investment in Costa has been nothing short of a financial disaster. Once the season comes to an end, he will have cost Andrea Radrizzani in the region of £18m if you consider his yearly salary of £1.69m.

That means that if you divide the number of Leeds goals he has – six – by his overall value, he has set them back £3m per goal.

It’s evident why they could do with offloading Costa. He is bleeding the club dry.

AND in other news, Bielsa must UNLEASH “terrifying” Leeds prodigy who is “reminiscent of Gareth Bale”…
