Smith unbowed in Johnson battles

Graeme Smith will be focusing on the memories of scoring match-winning hundreds against Mitchell Johnson and Australia rather than previous dismissals and broken bones

Firdose Moonda in Port Elizabeth19-Feb-2014Graeme Smith could spend the next 12 hours hearing the crack the bones in his hand made when Mitchell Johnson broke it and wonder when he will have to hear that sound again. But he’d rather spend it thinking about the twin cuts he smacked off Johnson in Perth in December 2008, which took him to his century and set up South Africa’s win. Or about the quiet off-side single he took in Cape Town in 2011 after hammering Johnson for four earlier in the over, which gave him another century in another match South Africa won.The score, as it stands, is level. Johnson has broken Smith’s hand twice in matches in which Australia have defeated South Africa. And Smith has scored two hundreds against an Australia attack featuring Johnson, both times taking his milestone runs off the left-armer and both times in matches where South Africa triumphed. It is those he is going to remember in the lead up to the second Test.”I can go and watch some videos of scoring hundreds against Mitchell, which I’ve done,” Smith said, when asked whether he will do anything specific to prepare for his next encounter with Johnson. And he has asked the rest of his line-up to do the same. “I think every player here has had success against this attack and not so long ago. It’s important not to get caught up in the hype.”Obviously Mitchell has bowled extremely well and bowled aggressively, and we all know that creates headlines, creates stories, creates fanfare. There’s a huge amount of respect in our team for someone who is performing well. But it’s important not to get caught up in that. We’ve had a general group discussion on areas where we want to improve. We haven’t watched any more video or anything different than what we would have done before the first Test. Our mindsets and our gameplans are good. Ultimately it’s about walking the walk now.”Smith’s level-headed approach may smack of someone simply trying to put on a brave face but it has its roots in a good point. Johnson has played 10 Tests against South Africa and taken 54 wickets at a better average (25.66) than his overall one (27.50), which is evidence he has something over them. But there is nothing else that conclusively proves that Johnson has a stranglehold over South Africa.Tale of the tape

Smith’s average v Johnson in Tests is 27.14: 190 runs in 245 balls, 7 dismissals. In South Africa he averages 22 (88 runs, four outs), in Australia 34 (102 runs, three outs)

Johnson has dismissed Smith seven times in Tests, equal with Zaheer Khan. Only Chris Martin (eight) has dismissed him more often

The 10 matches he has featured in against South Africa are split straight down the middle, with Australia’s winning five and South Africa the other five. That means South Africa have as many good memories of playing against Johnson as they do bad ones, which is why Smith does not want to overplay the Johnson factor. He also doesn’t want to place too much emphasis on Australia being some sort of nemesis for South Africa. Given that they have not beaten them in a series at home since readmission, it is clear South Africa do have an extra bone to pick with Australia but Smith does not want them labelled as South Africa’s toughest opposition. He claims they have had to come back against equally daunting teams in the past, most recently in the UAE. “Obviously Australia are playing really well at the moment – they’re hot and they’re in form which is always a challenge,” he said. “But Pakistan in the UAE – going one-nil down there and being able to bounce back in conditions that South African teams have generally found tough was also a challenge.”Then, South Africa’s line-up also struggled against a left-armer in the uber-tall Mohammed Irfan before Zulfiqur Babar and Saeed Ajmal outspun them. Although the margin of defeat in Abu Dhabi was a hefty seven wickets, South Africa were already clawing their way back by the second innings of that match. They nipped out three quick wickets in the Pakistan chase to show signs of improvement ahead of their series-levelling win in Dubai. This time, they are dealing with something different. Johnson delivered a knockout blow in the first innings with his 7 for 68 and South Africa were still dazed in the second. He took another five. AB de Villiers and Hashim Amla are the only two batsmen who seem to be able to deal with him. The rest played shots they would rather forget, which led one Australian journalist to ask whether there was some credibility on the line for South Africa’s batsmen going into this match.Smith brushed it off as an overreaction, the same way he has with most things in the last few days. “One dismissal doesn’t make you lose credibility,” he said. “Anyway, I’ve made a career out of looking ugly.”The South Africa captain will think about that, too, before the first ball is bowled at St George’s Park tomorrow. He has turned the ungainly mow into a shot that can win Test matches and he will need it more than ever over the next five days.

Graeme Smith back to competitive cricket

Graeme Smith has successfully completed his first competitive outing since May, turning out for his franchise, Cobras, in a warm-up match against Indian side Madhya Pradesh at Newlands. Although the South African Test captain scored just two runs, he fielded in the slips and reported a clean bill of health after 21 weeks out of the game, which bodes well for the upcoming series against Pakistan.Earlier this year, Smith had to cut short his stint at Surrey due to the recurrence of an ankle problem and returned to Cape Town for surgery. Doctors discovered the condition was actually a fracture of the heel bone. Smith was operated on and had two pins inserted. He was on crutches for eight weeks before he could begin any physical activity. He has had a multi-disciplinary team of experts around him including a personal trainer, biokineticist and physiotherapist, and has made steady progress. Smith’s rehabilitation has included running on an anti-gravity treadmill and, more recently, regular cricket activity.”He has been working really hard with us in the nets,” Cobras coach Paul Adams told ESPNcricinfo. “And he has made good progress. He looks ready to go.” Smith, with the South African side, will depart for Dubai on Friday evening for a series of two Tests, five ODIs and two Twenty20s against Pakistan.”As things stands now, Graeme is on track to play,” Mohammad Moosajee, the team manager who is also a medical doctor, said. “We are happy with the progress he has made so far. We have approached every week with a plan in place to get him to ready for the series. Ideally you always want more time, but he has worked well. We have been careful to monitor him at every step, so we don’t overload him.”The Tests series is South Africa’s first since they whitewashed Pakistan 3-0 at home in February and will be an important assessment of their grip on the No. 1 ranking because of the conditions. This will be South Africa’s first series in subcontinent conditions since earning the Test mace and they are expecting a time as tough as England, who were also No. 1 when they went to the UAE early 2012 but were blanked 0-3 by Pakistan.South Africa also have a proud record to uphold. They have not lost a Test series on the road in seven years, since they were beaten in Sri Lanka in 2006. Smith has led them throughout that time and has previously said he looks forward to extending that run in the future. His return to the crease will be welcome news for South Africa’s Test ambitions, and it will also bolster their ODI campaign after a forgettable time at both the Champions Trophy and in Sri Lanka. Smith was ruled out of both series with the same injury concern and South Africa did not fare well at all. They were booted out of the Champions Trophy at semi-final stage by England and crashed to a 4-1 defeat in Sri Lanka. Although he is not captain in that format, he will partner Hashim Amla at the top of the order to add stability and experience in what is still a developing unit.

Napier, ten Doeschate down Durham

Essex maintained their hopes of reaching the semi-finals of the Yorkshire Bank 40 competition after crushing Durham by six wickets at Chelmsford

Essex maintained their hopes of reaching the semi-finals of the Yorkshire Bank 40 competition after crushing Durham by six wickets at Chelmsford. The hosts got home with 13.3 overs to spare, successfully chasing down Durham’s meagre 138 all out.Ryan ten Doeschate and Ravi Bopara made light of the task with a fourth-wicket partnership of 94 in 18 overs before the latter departed for 38. Ten Doeschate completed his side’s emphatic victory with an unbeaten 74 spanning 64 balls and featuring two sixes and eight fours. The visitors started the match at the head of Group B but struggled against a wonderful exhibition of pace bowling from Graham Napier. The Essex allrounder took 5 for 21, including a devastating spell of four wickets for one run in 2.2 overs at the start of the innings, as Durham sank to 9 for 4 after 4.2 overs.Mark Stoneman, Scott Borthwick and Paul Collingwood all failed to score as Napier ran amok. He removed Stoneman with his second delivery of the match and three balls later found an edge as Borthwick pushed forward to give James Foster one of his three catches. Former England batsman Collingwood failed to dig out a yorker while Phil Mustard reached just nine before he became another Napier casualty. Will Smith made a gallant effort to sustain the innings with a 73-ball half-century that included five boundaries, and he found useful support from Gareth Breese with the pair adding 55 in 11 overs for the seventh wicket. Breese was bowled by ten Doeschate and soon after Smith drove Tymal Mills to Bopara at mid-off as Durham’s innings ending as ignominiously as it had started with the loss of three wickets for one run.Bowled out in 34.1 overs, the visitors did have some early impetus when Essex started their reply as they captured three wickets for 30 runs in 11 overs. Hamish Rutherford edged Mark Wood to slip in the first over, Mark Pettini was pinned in front of his stumps by Chris Rushworth three overs later and Greg Smith played down the wrong line and was bowled by Wood. But Bopara and Ten Doeschate soon steadied matters as they composed their match-winning stand. When Bopara became a second victim for Rushworth, only 15 more runs were required and ten Doeschate duly completed the win to send Essex into Twenty20 Finals day on Saturday in good heart.

Bracewell blitz helps Otago chase 309

Michael Bracewell slammed 83 off 48 deliveries to set up Otago’s victorious chase of 309 against Northern Districts in Mount Maunganui

ESPNcricinfo staff04-Jan-2015Michael Bracewell slammed 83 off 48 deliveries to set up Otago’s victorious chase of 309 against Northern Districts in Mount Maunganui. Aaron Redmond (64) and Sam Wells (93) had provided a solid platform with an opening partnership of 134 in just under 28 overs, but it was Bracewell who gave the innings the momentum it needed. Bracewell dominated the second-wicket stand of 111 that came in only 79 deliveries. He hit ten fours and four sixes before falling in the 41st over. Wells became one of Ish Sodhi’s three victims in the next over, and when Nathan McCullum fell cheaply to the legspinner, Otago still required 42 off 27. They lost Iain Robertson as well, but Derek de Boorder and Josh Finnie found the boundary a few times to haul the side home with three deliveries to go.Daryl Mitchell’s maiden List-A century had led the hosts to 308 for 8 after they chose to bat. Mitchell’s unbeaten 100 came off 98 balls and included eight fours and three sixes. Dean Brownlie contributed 66 at the top of the order while Mitchell Santner made a run-a-ball 45. Jacob Duffy was the most successful Otago bowler with 4 for 64 from ten overs.
