Barry Douglas’ Leeds departure could see Leif Davis given a chance

Deadline day may have come and gone, but Leeds’ transfer business isn’t done and dusted just yet.

The Whites can still operate in the domestic window, and while potential incomings such as Todd Cantwell are exciting, there are also some prospective exits at Elland Road.

Barry Douglas is one man who could soon be leaving the club with both Watford and Blackburn Rovers interested in his services.

While Douglas leaving would be something of a shame, considering that he’s never really got going at Elland Road, it may clear the path for one of United’s most promising young players to get more opportunities.

Indeed, Douglas was left out of the squad for the Man City game last weekend, and that meant that Leif Davis was called up to the bench. If the youngster gets more minutes this season, he could soon be knocking on the door of the starting XI.

There’s no doubting that Davis is an incredibly talented player – Liverpool were looking at him last summer – and he’s actually been compared to Gareth Bale in the past.

Indeed, Graham Smyth was talking about his cameo appearance against QPR last season, and when speaking about his pace down the left-wing, he claimed that it reminded him of Bale’s breakout showing against Inter Milan in the Champions League.

“For a defender that would be terrifying, somebody coming on with that kind of pace. It was reminiscent of Gareth Bale against Inter Milan, pushing the ball ahead and backing himself to beat anyone else to it,” Smyth said (Inside Elland Road 4/11/19)

That sort of electric pace could be a huge addition to United’s squad, especially when they’re coming up against a top team and they need to give them something to think about late on.

Davis could soon become United’s super-sub, and if he impresses enough in that role, there’s no reason why he can’t become Bielsa’s starting left-back in the near future.

Tottenham Hotspur: Pundit drools over ‘outstanding’ signing as news emerges

Giovani Lo Celso has excelled in his new role at Tottenham Hotspur ever since the Premier League restarted last month.

After Jose Mourinho decided to give Harry Winks another chance, Lo Celso was deployed further forward, and he was let loose against the Everton defence.

While it may not have been pretty, he played an instrumental part in breaking the deadlock, as Michael Keane deflected his strike into the back of his own net.

Paul Robinson insists he would not swap the Tottenham ace for Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs star claims Lo Celso has been “outstanding” for Mourinho’s side.

Last month, Fernandes revealed Spurs came close to signing him before Sporting Lisbon blocked the deal, via Sky Sports.

Mourinho dismissed his compatriot’s comments and said he would rather have Lo Celso anyway.

After being asked by Dylan Childs if he would swap the Argentine for Fernandes, Robinson admitted he would like to have both of them, but would choose Lo Celso if he was forced to pick between the two.

He told Football Insider “I would like to have them both! Two top-quality players.

“Lo Celso has shown a side to his game that not many people, including myself, knew that he had. He is not afraid to do the hard yards and play as a holding midfielder as well as an attacking midfielder.”

“I certainly would not swap him for Bruno Fernandes. Two outstanding players but Lo Celso has become key to what Spurs do. He’s settled and adapted to life in the Premier League very easily and very quickly.

“He looks to be a very astute signing along with Bergwijn. They are the type of signings that Spurs need. They have changed the team.

“Fernandes is a top player but I would not swap him for Lo Celso.”

It is hard to argue with Robinson here, as Lo Celso pulled all the strings in the 1-0 win over the Toffees.

The midfield maestro was widely touted as Christian Eriksen’s successor but ended up playing in a deeper role alongside Winks before the break. This didn’t stop him from being one of the club’s best players prior to the nationwide lockdown in March.

However, the 24-year-old has burst into life since the restart, as his performances have continued to get better and better with each passing week. Indeed, he earned a solid SofaScore rating of 6.8 in the draw with Manchester United, but bounced back with impressive displays against West Ham and Everton.

While Bruno Fernandes has been in electric form ever since he arrived at Old Trafford in January, the statistics don’t paint the full picture.

Lo Celso only has two goals this season, but these numbers can be attributed to the fact that it has taken him until 2020 to get his shot in central midfield.

Mourinho has let him off the leash over the past week or so, which has given him the freedom to move further forward, and he was unlucky not to score his first Premier League goal after his effort ricocheted off Keane.

It is difficult to believe it will be too far away if the Portuguese sticks with his new system as Lo Celso continues to take new strides in the final third.

That isn’t to say Fernandes wouldn’t make an immediate impact, as the evidence is there for all to see, the fact remains Lo Celso is arguably a better fit for where Spurs are at right now.

It is highly likely he will stick around for the foreseeable future, whereas Fernandes will no doubt be attracting attention from Barcelona and Real Madrid, which could unsettle the United squad.

Mourinho’s side are currently eighth in the table, eleven points behind fourth-placed Leicester, tied with Sheffield United on 48 points.

All hope of claiming silverware this season is basically over at this point and he will be looking to plan ahead for next season instead.

Sheffield Wednesday: Lyle Taylor move could be closer after he slams Charlton over contract offer – Opinion

Sheffield Wednesday target Lyle Taylor has lashed out over contract complications with the Charlton Athletic board.

In a recent interview with The Conv3rsation podcast (via The Star), the striker has given his side of the story regarding a statement that was released by chairman Matt Southall.

According to the official statement, Taylor had been offered a new contract with the Addicks but he turned it down. Charlton then allegedly rescinded the offer and the 30-year-old is now looking at leaving the club as a free agent.

However, Taylor has hit out at this version of events. “In October, [former Charlton owner] Roland Duchatelet was still the owner of the club and he offered me a contract,” he said on the podcast. “Had he offered it to me in the summer, I’d have signed it without hesitation.”

Taylor went on to talk about how he didn’t agree with the wage he was being offered as he “would still have earned more money at Sunderland in League One”.

After Charlton was sold, Southall joined the club and released the allegedly false statement. The forward has described the events as a ‘disgrace’ and went on to say: “You could not even begin to imagine the circus that this football club has become.”

Taylor was linked to a move to Sheffield Wednesday back in December (via Sky Sports), but the Yorkshire outfit haven’t bid, knowing he will become a free agent in the summer.

After his comments on Charlton, there’s a very slim chance he will be staying at The Valley in the summer. Wednesday have just potentially stepped another inch closer to penning a deal for Taylor.

Newcastle fans lose their mind at club’s Twitter post

Newcastle United fans have been eagerly awaiting official confirmation of their prospective takeover but the club’s official Twitter account has hardly made things easier for them with one recent tweet.

In response to one supporter, they reacted with an image of a white flag – something widely recognised as a symbol of truce or surrender – similar to ‘white smoke’ which is known for coming to an agreement.

And the Magpies faithful have lost it in reaction to the post with many wondering if there is a more subtle message at play.

It’s now been several weeks since the news that the club could be taken over first hit the headlines as Amanda Staveley’s Saudi-backed consortium edged closer to a £300m deal according to the BBC, but any official confirmation still escapes those in the northeast.

Liverpool’s predicted XI against Brighton

Liverpool face Brighton on Saturday as they look to maintain their eight-point lead at the top of the Premier League table.

The Reds come into the match off the back of a 1-1 draw against Napoli in the Champions League at Anfield. As such, they will be looking to return to winning ways.

With so many games to play over the coming weeks, it will be interesting to see what team Jurgen Klopp puts out against the Seagulls. Here, we try to predict his starting XI.

As Alisson did not pick up an injury against the Italian team in midweek, there is no need for him to drop out of the side. Therefore, he will start between the sticks.

Check out footballers’ biggest fashion disasters in the video below…

Andrew Robertson came through the European fixture unscathed, and should therefore keep his place in the side for the visit of Graham Potter’s men. In the middle, Virgil van Dijk is unlikely to be removed, but Joe Gomez could come in alongside him. He struggled at right-back on Wednesday, but he could be included in the middle of the back four here. On the right, Trent Alexander-Arnold should return after being dropped to the bench for the last fixture.

Fabinho will be out of action until next year, so someone will need to take his place in defensive midfield. Naby Keita may be a long-term alternative, but an illness over the past week or so may mean it is too soon for him to start. As such, Georginio Wijnaldum could drop back into the deeper role, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain taking his place further forward. Expect Jordan Henderson to join the 26-year-old in central midfield.

Unless there are any last-minute injuries, expect all three of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino to stay in those three positions up front. With 18 goals between them already in this Premier League campaign, much of the Merseyside team’s success will rely on them in the coming months.

In other news, one Liverpool star says he could have joined Napoli before moving to Anfield.

Man United fans drool over Marcus Rashford after his fine goal vs Kosovo

Manchester United fans have taken to Twitter to drool over Marcus Rashford, after the forward scored yet another goal with a fine finish for England in the 4-0 win over Kosovo.

The 22-year-old entered the pitch in the 59th minute as a replacement for Callum Hudson-Odoi, and managed to make a significant impact with a fantastic curled effort into the bottom right corner in the 83rd minute.

Impressively, it was Rashford’s ninth goal in his last ten games across all competitions for club and country, while he has also grabbed an assist during that time period to make it an eye-catching ten goal involvements in as many appearances.

As well as his goal, Rashford – valued at £72m by Transfermarkt – completed three dribbles, recorded one key pass and drew one foul from the opposition – he is definitely looking comfortable in that role on the left.

Let’s take a look at what the United fans on Twitter have been saying…

Three potential solutions to Manchester City’s defensive crisis

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Of course, they would never say so publicly but it is hard to believe that Manchester City are not presently ruing their decision this summer to abstain in replacing their departed leader Vincent Kompany.

An early chasing of Harry Maguire eventually led to the Premier League champions baulking at the firmly-set price tag and while many observers expected subsequent targets to follow none were forthcoming. Instead City seemed content – or at least amenable – to going into the new season with what they already had.

There was Aymeric Laporte, a magnificent Rolls Royce of a defender. There was Nicolas Otamendi, an erratic loose cannon who only applied himself well when tethered to the calming presence of either Kompany or Laporte. There was John Stones, injury-prone and infuriatingly either imperious or a complete liability. And, for a fourth option, Fernandinho could be converted from a midfield 6 to centre-back in the same manner that Mascherano was reimagined under Guardiola at Barcelona.

A seismic long-term lay off for Laporte endured against Brighton in September changed everything, and since the loss of their most effective stopper City have been all at sea.

A calamitous defensive showing at Norwich resulted in a costly defeat while Otamendi’s shortcomings were ruthlessly exposed by Wolves at home. So far this term City have conceded 13 league goals, eight more than at this stage last year and the word is out that the formerly formidable Blues are decidedly shaky at the back.

It is not a crisis – not yet – but it’s certainly in the same postcode and a feeling persists that unless something is done about it City could very well slip from contention in the Premier League.

Here are three possible solutions to the growing crisis…

Sign Nathan Ake

A further complication to add to Pep Guardiola’s woes lies in the fact that the construct of his squad means that unless a ‘home-grown’ defender is sought it would require the selling of a ‘foreign’ player from his present contingent.

Having come through the Chelsea ranks, Nathan Ake qualifies as home-grown despite being a Holland international and with the club having already recently taken a keen interest in the Bournemouth star he is clearly someone who Guardiola admires.

The 24-year-old who boasts several years of top flight experience ticks every box but he comes at a price – a whopping £75m is what Bournemouth value him at, per Sky Sports.

Develop Eric Garcia

An alternative to a January transfer lies in the emergence of City’s teenage prodigy Eric Garcia. The accomplished La Masia graduate may only be 18 but his accomplished trio of first team performances have had City fans drooling over what is to come.

His innate reading of danger and excellent use of the ball has seen him compared to Gerard Pique and though his age unquestionably makes any fast-tracking a significant risk, would he be any less of a gamble than playing the unpredictable Otamendi?

Back three with Kyle Walker

Given the ease at which City cruised past Crystal Palace without fielding a single recognised central defender during a 2-0 win at Selhurst Park last month, it’s unlikely that Guardiola will be feeling compelled to make any drastic changes to his lineup. Fernandinho and Rodri marshalled the defensive unit with genuine authority while simultaneously allowing City to exert a frightening territorial advantage over the hosts.

But Palace’s meek resistance is not what City have to worry about and their most recent fixture against Liverpool laid bare some of their defensive frailties. Perhaps the solution, at least in away fixtures against some of the best sides in the division, is to revert to a system that incorporates three central defenders, with Kyle Walker dropping in to offer his physical prowess and previous experience.

The full-back thrived in a similar role during England’s route to the semi-final of the 2018 World Cup, and his familiarity with what’s required could help Guardiola implement a new system.
