Eze is fully fit for Aston Villa clash

Crystal Palace have received a potentially significant injury boost ahead of their Premier League encounter with Aston Villa at Selhurst Park this afternoon.

What’s the word?

In Friday’s press conference, Patrick Vieira revealed that midfielder Eberechi Eze has had a good week after returning to full training with the first-team squad, while Nathan Ferguson is also making good progress.

“Everybody trained this morning,” said the Frenchman. “Eze had a really good week, full session with the team. Nathan took part in some training this week, so everybody outside of Macca (James McArthur) are fit for the game.”

Vieira then went into more detail on McArthur, who picked up a hamstring tear a couple of weeks ago, providing another positive update.

“We don’t have a timeframe on the injury,” he revealed. “What we decided to do with the doctor is evaluate every week the progress he is making, and things are moving well. Obviously, it is still too early to start training with the first team.”

Patrick Vieira will be buzzing

The news that Eze has had another full week of training under his belt will leave Vieira buzzing with excitement, given the player’s importance to the team.

The highly-rated 23-year-old returned to the bench against Burnley last time out after being sidelined with an Achilles injury since May.

Last season, Eze established himself as a key player for the Eagles, scoring four goals and providing a further six assists in 34 top-flight fixtures and achieving the squad’s fifth-highest performance rating from WhoScored.

Since then, Palace have transformed their setup, replacing former manager Roy Hodgson with Vieira, who has overseen several exciting acquisitions.

The prospect of Eze lining up alongside the likes of summer signings Odsonne Edouard, Conor Gallagher and Michael Olise is a mouth-watering one, and it could occur for the first time against Villa today.

Liverpool fans flock to James Pearce claim

Flocking to Twitter, many Liverpool fans have been left worried following an update on their January transfer plans courtesy of reliable reporter James Pearce.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have been imperious in all competitions so far this season, becoming the first-ever English side to win all six games in a Champions League group stage last night with a 2-1 win over AC Milan (Indian Express).

The high-flying Reds are also well in contention for the Premier League title as we approach the festive period, keeping pace with table-toppers Manchester City as they lay just one point and one place behind the champions.

However, given that key players like Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah will be leaving for the Africa Cup of Nations in January, there have been concerns that Liverpool could lose pace as they are urged to make January signings (talkSPORT).

Making a claim on the Reds’ winter window plans, The Athletic reporter Pearce shared what he believes in a Tuesday night Q&A.

Replying to a supporter who asked if he thinks Liverpool will sign anyone next month, the journalist explained: “As things stand I’d be surprised if LFC sign anyone in January. Personally, I’d love to see another attacking option added to the squad.”

Liverpool fans worried…

Flocking to this claim from a reliable source, it’s little wonder so many Reds supporters are concerned given the absence of both Salah and Mane mid-season – the pair have scored 29 goals between them already this term.

Without January additions, this leaves Klopp arguably short of options going forward, with more responsibility placed on alternatives like Divock Origi and Takumi Minamino. Given the strength in depth of title rivals Man City and Chelsea, there is indeed a cause for concern to be held.

Here’s how some Liverpool supporters responded to Pearce’s claim, with many left disenchanted at the prospect of yet another sparse transfer window from the club.

Wimaladarma hands Saracens maiden win

A round-up of the fifth round of matches in Tiers A and B of Sri Lanka’s Premier League Tournament

Sa'adi Thawfeeq04-Nov-2009Tier AWith bad weather curtailing play for most of the final day, Saracens Sports Club was the only club to pull off a victory, beating Army Sports Club by 43 runs to record their first win of the season. Despite the loss, Army gathered enough batting and bowling points to lift themselves off the bottom of the table, at the expense of former champions Colombo Cricket Club. Saracens victory in a low-scoring game in Panagoda was fashioned by offspinner Dilshan Wimaladarma, who took a career-best 8 for 68 in the first innings and a match haul of 10 for 148, to bowl out Army for 161 and 153 in either innings. He had the support of left-arm orthodox spinner Geeth Alwis who took 6 for 36 in the second innings. On a pitch described by Saracens coach Dinesh Kumarasinghe as “not fit for a Division I club match”, the spinners held the upper hand throughout. Spinner Ajantha Mendis also bowled splendidly, capturing 6 for 64 in the Saracens second innings, along with legspinner Seekkuge Prasanna, who finished the match with 7 for 98. However, their efforts were not matched by the batsmen who failed to chase down a moderate 197 in the fourth innings. While the majority of matches turned out to be low-scoring affairs, pace-setters Nondescripts Cricket Club went on a run spree against Colombo Cricket Club (CCC) at Maitland Place, piling up the highest total so far this season, at 551 at 9. Upul Tharanga celebrated his recall to the Sri Lankan one-day side as Tillakaratne Dilshan’s opening partner for the tour of India when he blazed away to a stroke-filled 155 off 210 balls. CCC skipper Tharindu Mendis’ decision to field first turned out to be a nightmare for his team as Tharanga and his opening partner Yohan de Silva (88) gave Nondescripts a flying start with a double-century partnership. They built on that platform with rising star Dinesh Chandimal scoring his second century of the season, a career best 164 off 168 balls, as the CCC bowlers were put to the sword. CCC were pegged back further as the young Angelo Perera stroked an unbeaten half-century before captain Tharanga finally closed the innings. Riding on the experience of Bathiya Perera’s tenth first-class hundred CCC at one time looked set to challenge the NCC total at 345 for 4. However, they lost their last six wickets for 53, falling to the slow left-arm spin of Chanaka Komasaru who ended with five wickets. Although the game ended in a draw, Nondescripts gained enough batting and bowling points to consolidate their position at the top of the table.CCC coach Vipula Sittamige was optimistic that his team could turn things around in the next six weeks before the tournament ends. “We have been scoring runs and getting wickets but we have been unable to play our best eleven in any of the matches because some of our key players are not available for various reasons,” Sittamage said. “At the same time, we have been constantly unlucky not to be able to earn first-innings points from most of our games. Things will definitely change in our favour in the coming weeks.”Sri Lanka Test wicketkeeper Prasanna Jayawardene, who is under pressure to perform with the bat ahead of the tour to India, struck timely form with a pleasing century to carry Bloomfield Cricket & Athletic Club to a challenging 336, but bad weather prevented Ragama Cricket Club from making any progress towards overhauling that total, allowing only 22 overs to be bowled in their reply at the Thurstan College Ground.Bloomfield’s inability to gain first-innings points allowed third-placed Badureliya Sports Club to narrow the gap between them to less than a point, taking first-innings honours against Moors Sports Club at Braybrooke Place. Spinner Rangana Herath failed narrowly to give Moors first-innings points, when he came up with a heroic bowling performance. He took four of the first six Badureliya wickets to leave them struggling at 158 for 6, chasing Moors’ first-innings total of 178. But Sahan Wijeratne stuck in for a 144-ball 39, to edge Badureliya ahead by 24 runs, before becoming Herath’s fifth victim of the innings. Herath had not finished as he returned in the second innings to capture three more wickets as the visitors slipped to 61 for 6 before bad light and rain came to their aid.Allrounder Angelo Mathews’ 97 off 173 balls went in vain as Colts Cricket Club fell 37 runs short of grabbing first-innings points against Tamil Union Cricket and Athletic Club at the P Sara Oval. Chasing Tamil Union’s total of 320, Colts were very much in the hunt at 232 for 4, but Mathews’ dismissal with the score on 244 sparked off a collapse and Colts lost their remaining wickets for 39 runs. Muthumudalige Pushpakumara, another promising allrounder knocking on the selectors’ doors, was Tamil Union’s trump card. He top scored with a cultured 79 and followed it up with four wickets, including that of Mathews.Last season’s runners-up Sinhalese Sports Club’s (SSC’s) chances of winning the title this year suffered a major setback when they conceded vital first-innings points to Chilaw Marians Cricket Club at Maitland Place. Marians performed exceptionally well to bowl out a full-strength SSC team for 171. On a seaming pitch, which was under covers for almost 15 hours due to bad weather, SSC’s batsmen, with the exception of Tharanga Paranavitana, floundered. Paranavitana managed an exceptional 103 off 189 balls, scoring 60% of his team’s total. Despite the regular fall of wickets, Marians scraped out a narrow 39-run lead, thanks to a composed 76 off 129 balls from Milinda Siriwardene. SSC offspinner Sachitra Sennanayake continued to impress with his second five-wicket haul for the season.

Burgher were humbled for 216 by the right-arm medium-pace of Sudeepa Perera who took five wickets. LCC were led by half centuries from Rasika Priyadarshana (95) and Upul Fernando (89) as they gained a healthy first-innings lead of 150. They had Burgher on the ropes at 123 for 6 in the second innings when bad light and rain robbed them of a possible win.Panadura Sports Club continued to put pressure on the table-toppers by grabbing first-innings points against Police Sports Club at the Panadura Esplanade. Amila Perera’s slow left-arm spin accounted for five Police wickets as they were dismissed for 210. Panadura ran up 313 with all-round contributions.Umesh Karunaratne gave Seeduwa Raddoluwa Cricket Club their first win of the season with a grand all-round performance at Riffle Green. He scored twin fifties and took nine wickets in the match against Sri Lanka Air Force Sports Club.Sri Lanka Navy Sports Club came within two wickets of recording their first win of the season when they reduced Sebastianites Cricket and Athletic Club to 145 for 8 after setting them a target of 303 at the De Zoysa Stadium. Former Sri Lanka Under-19 cricketer and Ananda College left-handed opener Udara Jayasundera scored a century on his first-class debut (102 in the Navy second innings).

After finishing with Ananda College, offspinner Dilshan Wimaladarma had been searching for the ideal club where he could display his bowling skills. He had short stints with Burgher Recreation Club, Air Force Sports Club and Bloomfield, before joining Saracens for the current season. Under the guidance of coach Dinesh Kumarasinghe, Wimaladarma is turning out to be a matchwinner for Saracens.Last week, he took a career-best of eight wickets in an innings against Sri Lanka Army Sports Club to hand Saracens their first win of the season. “It is not an easy task taking eight wickets in an innings,” said Kumarasinghe. “If he is looked after properly Dilshan has all the makings of a bowler who can reach the top of the ladder. Dilshan has variety: he bowls offspin, top spin and the one that goes straight through. He is not just an ordinary bowler but one who will matches for us.”.At 24, Wimaladarma has time on his hands to develop into a top-class spinner and in Saracens he may have found the right club to pursue that goal.

Prior not losing sleep over Langer dossier

Matt Prior, the England wicketkeeper, has shrugged off the comment about his “massive ego” in Justin Langer’s leaked dossier about the England team and said he hadn’t “lost too much sleep over it”.Prior, who overcame a pre-toss back spasm to top score in England’s first innings at Headingley, said comments like Langer’s were part of the game. In the dossier, Langer advised the Australian team to chip away at Prior “about his wicketkeeping and the pressure he is under to perform with the gloves on”. “I am not sure he actually likes keeping that much and from all accounts he has a massive ego so I would be reminding him about how his keeping could see him out of the team,” Langer wrote. “I would definitely work on his ego.”Prior said he just planned to concentrate on his work and stay in the zone. “It is important whose advice and whose opinion you should listen to and take seriously,” Prior said. “It is not something I would take seriously or listen to. If my team-mates or my friends started saying something like that I might listen to it but otherwise it is nothing.”It is part and parcel of the game, whatever anyone’s thoughts or ideas are that is fine, that is up to them.”Prior was subjected to public and media ire during India’s 2007 tour to England over sledging Sachin Tendulkar as well as his alleged involvement in the jelly-bean incident with Zaheer Khan. Prior denied littering the pitch with jelly beans to distract Zaheer and said he was victimised for the rest of the series. Poor form behind the stumps cost him his place in the side and Prior later said he had difficulty coming to terms with the “character assassinations” from the media and public. On the England board’s request, Sussex have rested Prior from the Twenty20 Cup matches on Sunday. Sussex are scheduled to play Northamptonshire in the semi-final which will be followed by the final later that day. Prior said the decision to rest him had not been taken because of the back spasm. “My back is fine, I’ve had physio pretty much everyday since the Test match, so today it is 90-95% spot on.”All my energy and all my thinking is obviously going towards [the Test], so first and foremost I think it would be unfair on myself or on my Sussex team-mates if I were to turn up on Saturday if my head was not fully on the white ball and Twenty20 cricket – slogging and what not – when really I’m thinking about building a long innings of Test cricket.”

NUFC expected to make marquee signings

An exciting update has emerged on Newcastle’s transfer plans ahead of the upcoming January transfer window…

What’s the talk?

Magpies reporter Liam Kennedy has claimed that PIF will make multiple ‘marquee’ signings and has admitted that they could come in January, although they may wait until the end of the season.

He told GIVEMESPORT:

“I think Newcastle will make a couple of marquee signings, it might not be in January, although I do think they might try and do something in January.”

Buzzing

Newcastle fans will surely be buzzing with this claim from Kennedy as it suggests that they can look forward to some exciting transfer business in the next two windows.

Although he has not said that they will 100% go for a marquee addition in January, he does believe that it will come eventually and that they will still try to bring players in during the winter market.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/check-out-the-latest-newcastle-howe-ter-stegen” title= “Read the latest Newcastle news!”]

It would sensible for the club to make a few shrewd additions in January to bolster the squad in order to achieve survival, rather than splashing out the cash instantly. If they are able to sign the right players to keep the club in the Premier League then they could go into next summer in a better position to tempt stars into joining, rather than coming to them with the prospect of six months in a relegation battle.

For example, the Magpies may choose to wait for the summer months and go for someone like Dusan Vlahovic. He has recently been linked with a move to Tyneside and he could fit the profile of the marquee addition needed to lift the team to the next level.

The Serbian international is not playing Champions League football with Fiorentina and, therefore, could be more open to the move than, say, a player competing at the very top with Real Madrid or Manchester City. However, he has the performance levels to suggest that he could be an extravagant signing, with 29 Serie A strikes since the start of last season.

For now, though, Newcastle supporters will be elated at the prospect of an exciting January transfer window speculating over who may or may not arrive.

Hopefully, Eddie Howe and his team will then provide the goods in reality during the window to bolster the squad and improve the displays on the pitch in order to stave off relegation to the Championship.

Romano drops Ramsey update for West Ham

Sharing an update on the future of West Ham United target Aaron Ramsey, reliable reporter Fabrizio Romano has revealed what the player is planning to do in December and January.

The Lowdown: West Ham eye Ramsey move…

As per reports from Italy, the Hammers and new recruitment chief Rob Newman have their eyes on the Juventus midfielder.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-updates-2/” title=”West Ham updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Calciomercato (via Sport Witness) claim that West Ham have set their sights on Ramsey and tentative contact has already been made over a potential move.

The Old Lady are apparently eager to offload in January whilst making as much profit as possible and getting his sky high €7 million-per-year (£5.9m) salary off the books.

Now, Romano has shared an update on the player’s situation.

The Latest: Ramsey set for crunch winter call…

As per the reliable transfer journalist, Ramsey is set for a crunch ‘December/January’ transfer call over his future.

“There were no approaches from Newcastle new board for Aaron Ramsey or Mauro Icardi as things stand now,” the Italian explained on Twitter.

“Icardi is not planning to leave Paris Saint-Germain in the next few months. Ramsey will decide his future in December/January.”

The Verdict: West Ham set for wait…

As Newman and West Ham allegedly target the 30-year-old, the question remains as to whether he can indeed improve David Moyes’ options.

Dubbed ‘world class’ by international teammate Joe Allen, Ramsey clearly still has some ability in his locker going by his showings for Wales at Euro 2020.

He is also experienced in the Premier League, having notched 65 goals and 65 assists in 371 appearances for Arsenal before leaving north London.

The only object may be his wages and whether or not Moyes will want that aspect of his transfer potentially splitting the dressing room.

In other news: West Ham now plotting big money bid to sign 115-goal striker who Moyes personally wants, find out more here.

Simeu could be a future star at Southampton

With four draws and three defeats in their opening seven Premier League games of the season, it’s safe to say that Southampton have not had the best of starts, especially with Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side also conceding 10 goals in that time.

In addition to this poor start to the season, the Saints were also struck with some bad news after Jack Stephens picked up a serious knee injury during the 0-0 draw against Manchester City which will see him ruled out of action for 12 weeks.

Taking all of this into account, along with the sale of Jannik Vestergaard to Premier League rivals Leicester City during the recent summer transfer window, it’s looking pretty bleak for the club from a defensive point of view.

However, we feel that the club have a good defensive option to call on for the time being or at some point in the future with 19-year-old centre-back Dynel Simeu.

Southampton signed the teenager back in July on a three-year contract from fellow Premier League club Chelsea.

Since then, Simeu – who was once described as a “monster” by journalist Neil Moxley during his time with the west Londoners’ youth team – has played 90 minutes in all of Southampton under-23s’ matches across all competitions, showing how important he has been for them in his short time there, even though they haven’t managed to win any of those games.

In the two appearances Simeu has made so far this season in the EFL Trophy, the defender – who is currently valued at £900k by Transfermarkt – has averaged two interceptions, 3.5 tackles and an impressive seven clearances per game, showing that he has plenty of defensive ability in him at such a young age.

In comparison with Vestergaard, the 29-year-old Dane racked up a not too dissimilar average of 1.4 interceptions, 1.7 tackles and four clearances per game throughout Southampton’s 2020/21 Premier League campaign.

Moving forward, if Simeu can continue playing regularly and improving for Southampton’s under-23 side, we see no reason why he couldn’t go on become a regular first team player for the Saints as an ideal long-term replacement for Vestergaard if given the chance.
