Agarkar: Worst time for Mumbai to play CSK

Big Picture

Chennai Super Kings have been one of the busier teams in the UAE, and on Friday will play their third game inside five days. However, they may not be complaining too much about the short turnaround time, given that they have built up a winning momentum after their last two games. After steamrolling Delhi Daredevils, they were stretched by Rajasthan Royals while batting. Their bowlers stepped up for the second time after a horror opening game against Kings XI Punjab, suggesting that they are developing their all-round game early in the tournament.Mumbai Indians on the other hand have had the last five days to regroup and reassess their poor start to the tournament, having dropped both games with underwhelming performances. Their batting was a letdown on both occasions and the problems begin at the top. Michael Hussey was never an explosive starter while at Chennai Super Kings. He could afford to be the steady accumulator due to the presence of big hitters lower down the order who would routinely shore up the innings. While Hussey is yet to find his feet in his new franchise, it wouldn’t be fair to lay the blame on him.Mumbai have explosive hitters down the order in the form of Corey Anderson and Kieron Pollard, but the lack of contributions from them has compounded their problems, as scores of 122 and 115 suggest. Even their experienced seam attack of Zaheer Khan and Lasith Malinga need a fighting total to defend, as was the case against Royal Challengers Bangalore, where 115 was still inadequate after having the opposition down at 17 for 3.

Players to watch

Corey Anderson was Mumbai’s second-most expensive buy at the auction, behind Hussey, at INR 4.5 crore. Though it’s still early days for him in the IPL, he is yet to show what he’s capable of. He played eight balls for 2 before he was bowled by Sunil Narine and against Royal Challengers he made 18 off 19 with two fours. He has the power to clear the big boundaries in Dubai. Mumbai need him to step up as a lower-order finisher.Super Kings have preferred to go in with a more inexperienced Indian seam attack comprising Mohit Sharma and Ishwar Pandey instead of the more experienced Ashish Nehra. Mohit was economical against Daredevils, conceding 17 off three overs and against Royals he bowled two overs for 13. Mohit has been difficult to get away when MS Dhoni stands up to the stumps, which suggests that the captain uses him as a run-saving option. Mohit said that the back of a length deliveries work better in the Dubai pitch, which wasn’t the easiest to bat on in Super Kings’ last game.

Stats and trivia

  • Mumbai Indians are the only team against whom Chennai Super Kings have a negative win-loss record in the IPL. Super Kings have lost 9 games against Mumbai while only winning 6, out of 15 games
  • The highest run-scorer and the highest wicket-taker in matches between these teams are from Super Kings. Raina has scored 414 runs, while Dwayne Bravo has taken 20 wickets (though he is out of this tournament).

Dar guides HK to historic win; Bangladesh through

Hong Kong pulled off the shock of the tournament thus far beating Bangladesh by two wickets despite the hosts managing to edge past Nepal on net run-rate for a place in the Super 10s

The Report by Mohammad Isam in Chittagong20-Mar-2014
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsNadeem Ahmed picked four wickets as Bangladesh lost their last seven for 23 runs•Associated PressHong Kong gave every Associate nation a reason to rejoice by pulling off the shock of the tournament thus far beating Bangladesh by two wickets in a last-over finish, despite the hosts managing to edge past Nepal on net run-rate for a place in the Super 10s.Haseeb Amjad smacked Abdur Razzak for a six over extra cover to complete the win in 19.4 overs. But the match was set up by their bowlers who bowled out of their literal skins, with Nadeem Ahmed winning the man-of-the-match award for his four-wicket haul. Irfan Ahmed and Munir Dar completed their greatest ever triumph with a cluster of boundaries when the game could have sprung out of their reach. For once, Irfan didn’t get out to the first ball of the innings as Al-Amin Hossain dropped a simple return catch. Then it was Rubel Hossain who dropped him on 12 at short third man and injured himself. But in between and after, Irfan blasted three sixes and three fours in his 28-ball 34 that ate into Bangladesh’s tiny total – their second lowest in T20s. They suffered a collapse too, but it was Dar, the veteran, who stood firm in the end, biffing three fours and a six in his 36 off 27 balls.Dar had to endure a collision with Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim while trying to complete a second run in the 15th over. But fatefully, he found Farhad Reza, a former teammate from the only time he played in the Dhaka Premier League seven years ago, to his liking and smashed 15 runs in the 17th over when they needed 26 runs off 24 balls.Hong Kong, however, waded into Bangladesh with the ball in hand. Left-arm spinner Nadeem took 4 for 21, his best bowling figures in T20s while Nizakat Khan, whose bowling action has a slight Shahid Afridi resemblance, picked up three wickets for 19 runs. Irfan Ahmed’s only wicket started the Bangladesh batting collapse while Tanwir Afzal’s two early wickets helped Hong Kong keep the noise in the ground down.Bangladesh’s descent started, as it does when they play this poorly, in the first over when Tamim Iqbal tried to cut Tanwir’s incoming delivery and had his off stump flattened. Tanwir trapped Sabbir Rahman with another delivery that went in, and replays showed it would have crashed into leg and middle.Anamul Haque and Shakib Al Hasan, perhaps embarrassed by the early wickets or driven by superiority, went after the Hong Kong bowlers till the end of the Powerplay overs. Off the last ball of the sixth over, just after he had struck Nadeem for three consecutive boundaries, Anamul played on to an innocuous delivery. Bangladesh were still going strong in the eleventh over when Shakib played a scoop, tried another and then finally gave a simple catch to deep midwicket. The shot didn’t do justice to the comfort of 85 for 3, but do any of their shots ever? That’s when the rot took over. In the space of 5.5 overs, Hong Kong not just got themselves into the game, they got on top of it and ruled. Mushfiqur’s attempted slog at Nizakat fell at cover’s hands. Mahmudullah was bowled by Nadeem as he tried to pick a single on the off-side, the delivery looking far better in the TV replay as there was a bit of confusion whether Jamie Atkinson had deflected it.Atkinson then gulped in Reza’s edge off Nizakat and then took an even better take off the next ball to dismiss Razzak. It was 101 for 8 in the 14th over. Soon Rubel Hossain was removed by Nadeem, and then with a chance to construct a last-wicket resistance, Nasir Hossain decided to give Al-Amin Hossain the strike. The result was predictable as the No 11 holed out at long-on, a spectacular catch by Babar Hayat, who had earlier let one slip through his legs. The collapse complete with seven wickets falling in 5.5 overs, for just 23 runs. This was a batting disgrace, particularly the attitude that came with the batting.

Boult swings NZ to innings win

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsTrent Boult claimed his best innings and match figures of 6 for 40 and 10 for 80•Getty Images

West Indies succumbed to a third innings defeat in four Tests, collapsing twice to lose 16 wickets in a day to New Zealand’s swing and pace. In the first innings, they lost their last six wickets in 35 deliveries to crumble to 193. In the second, they stumbled from 74 for 0 to be dismissed for 175 about an hour after tea. It was New Zealand’s first win in 11 Tests in 2013 and also Brendon McCullum’s first as captain.Nine of the 16 wickets on the third day were taken by Trent Boult, who put on an exhibition of fast, accurate inswing bowling. McCullum enforced the follow-on again after the unsuccessful attempt in Dunedin, and Tim Southee rebounded from an average display in the morning to break the opening partnership and deliver three key wickets.Starting the day on 158 for 4, West Indies lasted just 12.5 overs, unable to adjust their gung-ho approach to tackle Boult. Four of Boult’s five victims in the morning were right-hand batsmen who insisted on driving at the original line despite the copious inswing. Boult ended with his best innings figures of 6 for 40, his final four wickets coming in just six balls.Narsingh Deonarine started the meltdown after being worked over by Boult and prodded a straightening delivery to first slip. It was the beginning of a swift end. Marlon Samuels, who’d timed a couple of fours down the ground, kept on trying the off-drive without much foot movement, and succumbed as Boult’s inswing induced a thick inside edge to the wicketkeeper. The next three batsmen were all bowled, refusing to adapt to the swing and not even managing an inside edge on their attempted drives. Darren Sammy lasted two balls, leaving a gaping distance between bat and pad as he drove weakly. As did Shane Shillingford and Tino Best. In the space of five balls.Southee completed the job in the next over, an outswinger hitting Shannon Gabriel’s off stump. It was a perfect demolition of the lower order, the last four batsmen bowled for ducks. The disappointment of Dunedin would have been on McCullum’s mind, but the momentum Boult generated was too intense to be ignored, and West Indies were sent in for another trial by swing. McCullum would have had thoughts of Dunedin again when Kieran Powell and Kirk Edwards put on 74 for the first wicket.Boult had been held back after a couple of overs, and Southee was brought back only after lunch. Though a wicket never looked far away, the openers survived against Corey Anderson and Neil Wagner. They were beaten numerous times, they fended off bouncers, but didn’t try to hit their way out of the pressure. Edwards scored his first boundary off his 72nd delivery, and also successfully reviewed after he was given out caught at short leg off Kane Williamson, replays showing there was no bat involved.Even as the deficit decreased steadily, Southee stepped up with a spell of 9-1-19-3 after lunch. Powell went for 36 in a manner similar to the first innings, missing a full one swinging into him. Wagner, who had charged in without too much consistency, produced a sharp lifter next over to have Dunedin double-centurion Darren Bravo caught behind off the glove for a duck. The shots started to appear now from West Indies as the pressure increased. Edwards tried driving Southee, only to be snapped up superbly by Williamson at gully for 35. Southee also ended Samuels’ desperate, uncertain attempts at hitting out, a feeble drive ending at third slip.It had been all Boult in the morning, it was to be all Boult in the afternoon. Returning to bowl before tea, Boult made immediate impact as Deonarine rode the bounce on one only to chop it on. After the break, he leaped at backward point to snatch Denesh Ramdin’s cut in his left hand. He then handed Sammy a pair, the West Indies captain lasting a collective eight balls in the match as he was trapped in front by an inswinger.Fittingly, Boult swung one in through the gate to bowl last man Gabriel to finish with 10 for 80, his best return in a match.

Everything 'fantastic' for Prior

Matt Prior might have been standing in for the first time as an England captain, but he proved in Perth that he has already mastered the art of positive thinking. After England’s uncomfortable start to the Ashes tour against a Western Australia scratch side, he dubbed pretty much everything as “fantastic”.”The batters batted fantastically,” Prior said, a conclusion drawn from the hundreds compiled by Ian Bell and Jonathan Trott, rather than a final-day collapse against the second new ball which saw England lose seven wickets for 61 with Prior himself, Gary Ballance and Ben Stokes all falling cheaply in their first knock of the Ashes tour.Neither did Prior accept the general conclusion in the media that none of England’s trio of fast bowlers had made much of a case for inclusion in the first Test in Brisbane. They had taken a mauling on the first day, but Prior preferred to reflect upon a steadier performance against the WA Chairman’s XI second time around. “Today the big guys I thought were fantastic,” he said.Boyd Rankin, in particular, was presented by Prior as “fantastic all day”. Prior was so determined to maintain England’s spirits and sing the tune of Captain Fantastic that it would have been no surprise to discover that the Brown Dirt Cowboy was writing the lyrics.”I think the fast bowlers improved through the three days and got through that bit of rustiness,” he said. “Steven Finn bowled a long spell there, and certainly the last four or five overs he was really hitting his straps again, hitting a great area, and his pace was up.”Boyd Rankin I thought was fantastic all day. A bloke with such height and good pace and bounce on these wickets could be a pretty useful weapon. Tremlett got better and better and got more rhythm as the game went on.”A three-day affair on a sluggish surface against what, by and large, was a WA 2nd XI might be regarded as possessing only limited value. Not so. “I think we got a huge amount from the game,” he said. “I’m very happy sat here after the last three days. In all departments, we gradually got better throughout the game.”From a fielding and bowling point of view, the first day obviously wasn’t great. But there are reasons for that – a bit of rustiness – and that’s why we’re here four weeks early: to make sure we have the games and to clear the cobwebs before the first Test match.”Prior had a lean Ashes series with the bat and is anxious to remedy that before Brisbane. But anxiety was not allowed to permeate his air of bullish confidence. “If I scored runs in the nets I reckon I would probably have 100 hundreds at the moment,” he said. “I’ve been hitting it brilliantly, moving well, feeling really good. If I went 0, 0, 0, 0 in all these warm up matches but got a hundred in the first Test, I’d bite your arm off.”His PR exercise achieved, he knew it was time for him to step down from his temporary leadership role, with Alastair Cook fit again to resume command against Australia A in Hobart next week. The handover of the baton passed without mishap. “It’s been good fun to be in charge and have a little bit of power,” he said. “I really enjoyed it, but back to Cooky.”

O Santos já contratou o goleiro Everson, o zagueiro Felipe Aguilar, o volante Jean Lucas, o meia Christian Cueva e o meia-atacante Yeferson Soteldo. O Peixe ainda busca um centroavante. Alexandre Pato e Raniel são sonhos distantes.

Need to take pressure off Clarke – Wade

Matthew Wade has said batsmen need to find the right balance between patience and aggression if they are to give Michael Clarke the support he needs

Matthew Wade supported Michael Clarke in a century stand in Hyderabad•BCCI

Australia’s wicketkeeper Matthew Wade has said the batsmen need to find the right balance between patience and aggression if they are to give Michael Clarke the support he needs to turn the Test tour of India around. Clarke has scored more than twice as many runs as any other member of Australia’s top six during the first two Tests and will move up the order from No.5 for the third Test in Mohali in an effort to exert greater influence on Australia’s batting innings.More than a quarter of Australia’s runs in the series have come off the bat of Clarke but only two batsmen have accompanied him for meaningful partnerships, Moises Henriques, in a 151-run stand in Chennai, and Wade for a 145-run partnership in Hyderabad. That ended when Wade cut a catch to backward point off Harbhajan Singh for 62, the ball after a missed stumping, and Wade said he knew he had thrown away a chance to really influence the game.”Michael has had to score a truckload of runs for us,” Wade said. “I felt very disappointed when I got out in this Test match. We’d put on nearly 150 runs and we were both really going. If I could have hung around with him, it could have been endless. Individually we’d like to stick around with him and help him out a little bit more and take the pressure off him. But I’m sure he’s going to keep scoring runs no matter what.”For most of Australia’s batsmen getting starts has not been the problem, but rather finding a way to stay at the crease long and push through to a much longer innings. In some cases they have fallen trying to force some runs to relieve pressure, while in other instances they have found themselves too tentative. Achieving the right balance is a fine art that the Indian batsmen have mastered in this series.”Getting a boundary away or playing a scoring shot relieves the pressure a little bit,” Wade said. “It’s hard work to try to stay mentally in your game plan and not go away from that when the spinners are bowling really well. One thing that I definitely saw in the first innings [in Hyderabad] is when you do get on top, things start to happen a lot quicker. You can go from 20 to 50 quickly in these conditions.”We might have to be a little bit more aggressive at times to get India to do something different because if they get into a rhythm and just bowl dot after dot, the game’s not going anywhere for us. We’re just sitting ducks. We’ve got to try to be a little bit more aggressive and put the pressure back on their bowlers.”However, in some cases when the Australians have tried to do just that it has cost them their wickets. Two Tests in to the series, the batsmen are starting to realise just how difficult the Indian conditions can be in Test cricket, which is a new experience for all but Clarke and Shane Watson among the batting group. Wade said the first two Tests had “definitely” been a wake-up call for the batsmen, who had a centre-wicket practice session on the Hyderabad pitch on what should have been day five of the Test.”The West Indies [2012 tour] was similar to these kinds of conditions, big-spinning wickets, hard to score, good spinners, good quicks bowling reverse,” Wade said. “Coming from Australian conditions to these conditions is a massive difference and it has taken a little bit of time to adapt. But that’s no excuse. We had two trials games where our batters got good innings and our bowlers had a good bowl.”We were a little bit flat [after the loss] but training has helped the mood, to get out there and start honing our skills again. Going to a ground day five when you were supposed to be playing, it’s not a great result when you are there training, but everyone was pretty focused individually on how to get better. The bigger thing is that as a team we need to get better so as the training session went on people got a little more relaxed and came out of their shell.”

Rob Walter resigns as South Africa white-ball coach

It is understood that the pressure he faced and continuous travel from New Zealand, where he lives, were taking a toll

Firdose Moonda01-Apr-2025Rob Walter, South Africa’s white-ball coach, has resigned two years into his four-year contract. Walter was initially due to take South Africa to the 2027 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.CSA cited personal reasons for Walter’s stepping down while ESPNcricinfo understands that the pressure Walter faced over his bilateral record, as well as the continuous travel from New Zealand, where Walter lives, were starting to take a toll.”Coaching the Proteas has been an incredible honour, and I am immensely proud of what we have achieved together,” Walter said in a release. “The players, support staff, and the South African cricketing community have been fantastic throughout this journey. While it’s time for me to step away, I have no doubt that the team will continue to grow and reach even greater heights.”Under Walter, South Africa qualified for their first men’s World Cup final, at the T20 World Cup in 2024, and the semi-finals of the 2023 ODI World Cup and last month’s Champions Trophy. But bilaterally, his record has been poor. In his tenure, South Africa played seven bilateral ODI series and lost three, including their first whitewash to Pakistan. They also played eight T20I series and won just one.Walter always offered the caveat that he very rarely had full-strength sides available to him in bilateral cricket as players were rested, given permission to play in franchise leagues or prioritised for other formats but the context was often lost against the backdrop of bad results.South Africa made it to the semi-finals of each of the last three ICC events.•DP World

Walter also faced criticism over his transformation record, in particular the selection of a squad with one black African player, Kagiso Rabada, at the T20 World Cup. Director of Cricket Enoch Nkwe backed Walter’s selection (South Africa do not have a selection panel and leave those decisions to the coach) and also commended the work Walter did in awarding new caps. Across two years, Walter awarded 14 new ODI caps including Gerald Coetzee, Tristan Stubbs and Ryan Rickelton, and 13 T20I caps of which Kwena Maphaka was one, and has helped identify a talent pool for South Africa to work with.”It is also important to recognise Rob’s commitment to expanding the talent pool across both formats. While in charge, he ensured that emerging players had the opportunity to develop and make their mark at the highest level, which will be critical for the future of the Proteas,” Nkwe said, and confirmed Walter’s successor will take South Africa to the 2027 tournament. “We have a busy period of white-ball cricket over the next two years as we build towards the Cricket World Cup on home soil. His successor will continue to work towards that 50-over World Cup campaign, along with next year’s T20 World Cup.”There are no clear contenders for the job but the conversation could include former South Africa spin bowler Robin Peterson, who successfully led MI Cape Town to the SA20 title earlier this year and coaches the Warriors franchise (though they were recently docked points for failing to meet transformation targets). Nkwe has previously coached South Africa and could reintroduce himself in some capacity or ask red-ball coach Shukri Conrad to step in, as he did in January 2023, when South Africa hosted England.Conrad has taken the team to the World Test Championship final, which is South Africa’s next assignment in June, and if the team opts for a consolidated role, he may also be given responsibility of the white-ball teams. The ODI and T20I sides will play against Zimbabwe in July before tours to Australia and England and five home T20Is against West Indies ahead of next year’s T20 World Cup.

Mandeep ton puts Punjab in strong position

ScorecardMandeep Singh scored a century after being offered several lives•Fotocorp

The Mumbai slip cordon failed to support the good work of their bowlers, dropping plenty of catches to let Punjab gain the upper hand on the opening day of the Ranji Trophy Group A tie at the Wankhede Stadium.Riding on an unbeaten century by stylish batsman Mandeep Singh, who was given three reprieves, and his 128-run stand for the third wicket with Ravi Inder Singh, Punjab ended the first day at a strong 288 for four. Had the Mumbai fielders grabbed five chances, three of them offered by Mandeep in the last session, the 39-time champions could have had the better of their opponents, who are the only team to have qualified for the knockouts so far. With the Wankhede pitch wearing a different look to the one used for the Test match a fortnight ago, captain Ajit Agarkar’s decision to bowl first wasn’t a surprise. While Agarkar and Dhawal Kulkarni kept it tight, the in-form Punjab openers Jiwanjot Singh and Karan Goel saw off the first hour without much trouble. However, sensing that the Pavilion End was offering more assistance for the quicks, Agarkar changed ends after bowling four overs from the Tata End and the move worked. He managed to extract additional bounce and Goel, who had hit a sweetly-timed boundary off Balwinder Singh Sandhu in the previous over, edged it to Ajinkya Rahane at second slip. While Jiwanjot, who has been piling on runs in his maiden first-class season, was cautious, Ravi Inder Singh didn’t take time to get going, thanks to a flurry of edges that flew off his bat to the vacant third-man boundary. With medium pacer Sandhu, playing his first match of the season, and offspinner Ramesh Powar looking lacklustre, Agarkar introduced allrounder Abhishek Nayar in the first session itself. And Nayar, who had bowled a dream spell of 19-12-13-6 against Bengal four days ago, created a chance immediately. Nayar forced a nick off Jiwanjot but wicketkeeper Aditya Tare’s diving attempt went in vain. After being given a life and with lunch approaching, Jiwanjot went into a shell. Left-arm spinner Ankeet Chavan, introduced in the 32nd over, got an edge off the batsman off the first ball he bowled. But Rohit Sharma failed to latch on to the edge while diving to his right. After surviving chances on 39 and 41, Jiwanjot went in to the break having added 51 runs with Ravi Inder, with Punjab at 108 for one.But the two chances didn’t prove costly for Mumbai as Jiwanjot prodded at one from Kulkarni soon after lunch and provided a catch to Hiken Shah. The rest of the session was dominated by Ravi Inder and Manpreet, who displayed all the strokes in their array at will. While Ravi Inder preferred to score boundaries in a gentle fashion, Mandeep, who led Punjab in the last three games in Harbhajan Singh’s absence, adopted a more aggressive approach.Mandeep waged an intentional attack on Chavan, who was bowling a tight line and length. In the 47th over, he slog-swept the lanky spinner for a boundary twice, and then danced down the pitch to hoick him over the long-on boundary. Perhaps the young batsman was relishing being relieved of his captaincy duties as he continued to pile on runs at will.In the last session though, Mandeep seemed to have repeated lapses of concentration, but the Mumbai fielders repeatedly came to his rescue, dropping him on 67, 73 and 93 in the slips. With so much help from the opposition, Mandeep did not falter in converting his maiden fifty of the season into his fifth first-class century. The milestone came with an elegant flick off Kulkarni that raced to the midwicket fence.Mumbai, however, managed to have the last laugh on the day when Uday Kaul became the third left-hand batsman to have been caught behind with just two balls remaining in the day’s play. Though Kulkarni gave the hosts the much-needed breakthrough, they would be aware that the job is far from being done. And if the fielders – all of them specialist batsmen – don’t back their bowlers, the line-up, without Wasim Jaffer who had to leave for Lucknow due to a close relative’s death, will have to work doubly hard with the bat.

No clássico contra o Corinthians, a mesma empresa atou no operacional do jogo e teve o trabalho elogiado.
