Many Villa fans flock to club message

Flocking to Twitter, many Aston Villa fans have erupted over a three-word message containing a picture of midfielder John McGinn.

The Villans ran out 1-0 winners against Manchester United yesterday afternoon in what was a memorable victory, and one which alerts the Premier League to their presence.

Dean Smith’s men battled away at Old Trafford against a plethora of superstars but came out on top when Kortney Hause buried a late header past David de Gea.

In reaction to the phenomenal win in Manchester, the club have dropped a three-word message involving McGinn as the Scotsman enjoyed a fine afternoon up against the likes of Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba in midfield, coming up with one important block and one successful tackle for his team.

Indeed, Villa simply dropped the message ‘what a performance’ in accompaniment to an image of the 26-year-old.

Flocking to the club’s post, many Villa fans erupted with their reactions as they enjoy the heights of a brilliant win away to the Red Devils. Here is a selection of the responses from the Villa Park faithful:

Warner called back for ODI debut

David Warner’s swift rise will continue in Hobart on Sunday © PA Photos

David Warner will play his first one-day international on Sunday after being picked to replace Michael Clarke, who was ruled out of the South Africa series with a thumb injury. Warner starred with a breathtaking 89 in the opening Twenty20 and was kept as cover for Clarke before being sent home to Sydney on Thursday when the vice-captain appeared to recover from a problem sustained during the Perth Test.Clarke played in the three-wicket loss to South Africa at the MCG, but the injury got worse and was told to rest for two weeks. Alex Kountouris, the team physio, said Clarke experienced pain while making 19 and it was the first time since hurting his right thumb that he had performed without an injection.”While Michael could continue to play with pain-relieving injections, this will ultimately slow his recovery,” Kountouris said. Clarke will now look towards the five-game series against New Zealand starting next month. While Warner’s promotion for the second match in Hobart is a personal highlight, it means he will not be able to help New South Wales, who are in contention for a spot at the lucrative Champions League Twenty20, in their match against Victoria in Sydney on Saturday night. “It presents an exciting opportunity for David to follow his spectacular Twenty20 debut in the 50-over format for Australia,” Andrew Hilditch, the chairman of selectors, said.Warner will provide a quick solution to Australia’s opening situation after Michael Hussey was promoted to partner Shaun Marsh in Melbourne. Marsh compiled a cautious 79 off 97 balls while Hussey, who has become used to life in the middle order, was out for 6 in the third over.

Wolves fans praise Morgan Gibbs-White

Many Wolves fans have been left gushing over Morgan Gibbs-White’s Man of the Match performance for Sheffield United on Saturday.

The 21-year-old is currently enjoying the second loan spell of his career after having his stint at Swansea City cut short due to injury last season.

The midfielder joined the Blades on loan on transfer deadline day and has seen his time at Bramall Lane get off to a perfect start with two goals and two assists in only three games. His debut came in the 6-2 home victory over Peterborough United, where he scored one goal and set up Illiman Ndiaye’s opener.

The £6.3m-rated playmaker scored again three days later against Preston North End before setting up Billy Sharp to score in Saturday’s 3-1 away win at Hull, with footage of his inch-perfect cross shared by Josh Holland on Twitter.

His performances for the Championship club have left many Wolves fans purring, with Gibbs-White scoring as many goals as the entire Wanderers squad in the Premier League, in fewer games, and showing his attacking qualities.

His crossing accuracy of 40% at Bramall Lane far outstrips the 29% from Adama Traore this season, something which plenty of the Molineux faithful have commented upon.

Gerrard provides Helander update

Steven Gerrard has provided an update on Rangers centre-back Filip Helander following his injury against St Johnstone.

What’s the latest?

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has admitted that Filip Helander’s injury is a concerning one after he was stretchered off against St Johnstone on Saturday, although he does not know the full extent of the blow at this moment in time.

He told The Scotsman:

“I’m concerned. He’s with the doctors now. He’s got ice on it and is bandaged up. It doesn’t look good.

“But until we scan it and assess it in the next 24-48 hours time, we’re not too sure.”

Gerrard will be gutted

Gerrard will surely be gutted by Helander’s injury as it could be a major blow to the club in the short term, with a Europa League clash coming up against Lyon on Thursday.

Whilst there is no definitive timeline on his injury, the fact that he was stretchered off with a knee injury and that the manager said that “it doesn’t look good” are not signs which suggest he’ll be back in action any time soon.

Therefore, the reality of the situation is that Rangers could now be without Helander for an extended period of time, which will weaken the club in the Europa League and the Scottish Premiership.

The Swedish international has proven himself to be a solid defender for the Gers in recent years, particularly impressing in the 2020/21 campaign.

Last season, Helander averaged an excellent SofaScore rating of 7.10 in 22 appearances. He won an eye-catching 68% of his duels over the entire campaign, whilst helping Rangers keep 13 clean sheets in his 22 games.

Gerrard once hailed the £14k-per-week beast as a leader and praised the experience he brings to the side when he is on the pitch. He said:

“I think he has shown great leadership. He had a little bit of an ankle issue before the international break and never played for Sweden.

“I decided to go with Katic at Hearts for the real physicality of Ikpeazu and then use Fil’s experience and leadership away to Porto, which I knew was going to be more of a technical game. One that needed experience.”

This is why the ex-Liverpool midfielder will be gutted that he could now be without the 28-year-old for the foreseeable future. He looks set to lose a quality, proven, option at centre-back and will now need other players to step up and show that they can produce equally solid displays in defence.

Miandad urges president to 'take care of cricket'

Javed Miandad, the former Pakistan captain, has suggested Asif Ali Zardari, the country’s new president, keep a close watch on the working of the board

Javed Miandad, the former Pakistan captain, has suggested Asif Ali Zardari, the country’s new president, needs to keep a close watch on the working of the board and eliminate the unnecessary positions created by the previous regime.Nasim Ashraf resigned as board chairman on August 18 soon after Pervez Musharraf, the PCB’s patron, stepped down from Pakistan’s presidency. “He [Zardari] is a sports lover and I am sure he will take care of cricket,” Miandad told the . “He is a democratic president of the country and I feel he should keep the post [of patron] with him in order to keep a close watch at the working of the board.”To start with, Zardari should make previous officials of the board accountable and that includes everyone from high-ranking officials to the bottom-ranked ones.”Miandad said the earlier PCB hierarchy created too many positions, and said that “instead of appointing four people, one efficient person could be hired in the board.”Miandad, who’s had three stints as Pakistan coach, was not in favour of a foreigner as coach of the national team. Geoff Lawson, the former Australia fast bowler, is currently in charge of the side. In the past, Pakistan have been coached by Bob Woolmer, who died during the 2007 World Cup, and Richard Pybus.”I still believe a Pakistani coach is much better than a foreign coach,” Miandad said. “Our cricket is played in streets, on roads and roofs, while outside Pakistan the coaches are groomed in proper environments with all the necessary playing facilities like proper grounds and all the required equipment.”What I feel is that if a foreign coach is given a 15-year contract to train the Pakistan team, [only] after 10 years he would start learning the A-B-C of our cricket,” Miandad, who has been unimpressed with their performance, said. “Foreign coaches will just come and make money, they can’t help in rebuilding the Pakistan team to compete against hard teams. Teams like Australia, South Africa, India, Sri Lanka and England are better than us in Tests and I think the day is not far when we would be given tough times by even Bangladesh and West Indies.”Miandad’s comments came on the same day as Lawson’s departure for Australia fuelled rumours of his resignation. However, the PCB clarified the coach had only gone on leave. “He will be back later this month,” PCB spokesman Mansoor Suhail said. “His annual leave was due and there’s nothing more than that.”If the series against Sri Lanka materialises, Lawson will surely come back much earlier and join the team,” he added.Pakistan are trying to fill up the gap created by the postponement of the Champions Trophy, but efforts for a tri-series in South Africa fell apart. Lawson, though, has continued to maintain he’s committed to Pakistan despite lucrative offers back home in Australia.

Wolves transfer update on Madueke

Lots of Wolves fans have been left reacting on social media as a transfer update emerged on Noni Madueke.

As per Sky Sports, the PSV ace is attracting interest from the Midlands club, as well as both Tottenham Hotspur and Leicester City.

However, he has a current valuation of between £30-34m, which may prove to be too expensive.

Madueke scored no fewer than nine goals and supplied a further eight assists in 32 matches in total over all competitions in the 2020/21 season, which is very impressive considering that he often operated on the wing (Transfermarkt).

Dubbed a ‘very explosive’ player by former PSV midfielder Tommie van de Leegte, he could certainly add a new dimension to Bruno Lage’s attack, but they may now have to sell a few players first in order to be able to afford him.

The case against Mohammad Asif, who was detained in Dubai on June 1 for suspected possession of an illegal substance, has been dropped by the Dubai public prosecutor and the fast bowler will be deported soon, according to a report in the .The report quoted the public prosecutor, Mohammad Al Nuaimi, as saying the case was being dropped due to “insignificance”.The Pakistan board issued a press release to confirm the case against Asif had been dropped. “The drug tests conducted on Asif during the investigations in Dubai were clear and negative for any contraband substance.” However the board said it intended to conduct an enquiry in to the matter as soon as it received official records from the UAE authorities. Even if the PCB doesn’t take action against Asif, it is likely the ICC might. They have been monitoring the situation and it is possible that Asif will face penalties under the World Anti Doping Agency (WADA), of which the ICC is a signatory, once he is released.Aamir Bilal, media advisor to the PCB, told Cricinfo that Asif would be in Pakistan by midnight on June 20.”He [Asif] will be deported as soon as the police finalise the procedures,” Mohammad Al Nuaimi, the public prosecutor who handled Asif’s case, told . “It is definite that he committed the crime as he was caught red-handed … however in certain cases and for a faster litigation process the Public Prosecution drops a case due to insignificance and deports the suspect.”Pakistan’s ambassador to the UAE, Ahsanullah Khan, also confirmed to the BBC’s Urdu service that Asif would return to Pakistan, but refused to specify the legal position on the charges of possession of contraband. He also said that the PCB and the Pakistan embassy had played a significant role in this matter.Dave Richardson, the ICC’s acting chief executive, had said that they had asked the PCB to keep them updated on the Asif issue. “As far as we know he has not been charged as yet,” Richardson said. “But since the ICC is a signatory of WADA regulations if he is charged then he is liable to penalties under WADA code of conduct.”
