Unbeaten Cobras make it four in four

A 47-ball 77 from wicketkeeper Dane Vilas, followed by a four-wicket haul from medium-pacer Mthokozisi Shezi helped Cape Cobras crush Knights by 73 runs in Cape Town. The victory was Cobras’ fourth straight win in the tournament and earned them their third bonus point, keeping them firmly at the top of the table.Opting to bat, Cobras made 285 for 5 from their 50 overs, as three players made half-centuries. Opener Andrew Puttick hit a patient 55, his fourth consecutive 50-plus score, to build a solid foundation, but the Knights bowlers fought back by striking regularly to reduce Cobras to 148 for 5 by the 37th over. Vilas and Sybrand Engelbrecht, however, counterattacked by putting up an unbroken 137-run partnership in just 83 deliveries to lift Cobras to a competitive total. Vilas’ knock included five fours and four sixes, while Engelbrecht hit nine fours and a six during his unbeaten 52-ball 68.Knights began the chase brightly with a 79-run opening stand between Gerhardt Abrahams and Reeza Hendricks, but lost their way after Abrahams’ wicket for 62 in the 20th over. Shezi picked up 4 for 38, while Lizaad Williams chipped in with two scalps, as Knights lost their last nine wickets for 101 runs. Pite van Biljon put up a fight, making 49, but none of the last six batsmen could muster more than four runs, as Knights were bowled out in 45.5 overs.

'India were overconfident in SA and NZ' – Fletcher

Duncan Fletcher has said that the India players were “overconfident” on the tours to South Africa and New Zealand and ended up complicating their games, something he wants them to avoid in England

ESPNcricinfo staff06-Jul-2014Duncan Fletcher, the India coach, has said that his players were “overconfident” on the tours to South Africa and New Zealand and ended up complicating their games, something he wants them to learn from and avoid in England.India lost their last two Test series overseas by a 1-0 margin. They set South Africa a target of 458 in the first Test in Johannesburg, before the hosts held on for a thrilling draw, finishing within striking distance of the target. The second Test was claimed by South Africa, who won by 10 wickets, chasing down India’s target of 58. In New Zealand, India fell 40 runs short in the first Test and were then thwarted by New Zealand, who saved the second Test after being dismissed for 192 in the first innings.”With these young boys I felt they could have been a little overconfident when they went to South Africa and New Zealand because they had done so well in India,” Fletcher told . “As the series went, it made them realise that playing away from home is very difficult. They believe that they have learnt from those tours and so there is positivity in the camp but the overconfidence has gone. But again, until you actually go out there and play a game, you will never know if you actually have learnt.”The biggest mistake the India players committed, according to Fletcher, was making their games complicated. “The batsmen, for instance, tried to bat a little too differently than they would in India,” he said. “The only actual difference was they had to get used to a bit more bounce. Because of this bounce, when it comes to the short ball, you just have to make up your mind whether you’re going to play or leave it. In India, you can play it on a consistent basis.”For the bowlers the length changes a little; you have to bowl a bit fuller when you go overseas. And it’s not an easy thing to do, especially for a young bowler. You’ve been groomed and trained your brain to bowl a certain way and even if the difference is only 6-12 inches, it’s not easy to make the change instantly and that too under pressure.”We see experienced international players’ games altering under pressure. Now here is an inexperienced side with players who are still learning their game and they will take time to get used to the varied challenges.”India are without Zaheer Khan in England and though Ishant Sharma has played 55 Tests, Mohammed Shami, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Varun Aaron have a combined 13 Tests between them, and Ishwar Pandey and Pankaj Singh are yet to debut. Fletcher said that while his pace attack was raw, it had a lot of variety.”The bowlers are pretty inexperienced. We haven’t really got anyone to lead the group and we haven’t taken 20 wickets in a Test since quite a while now. But for once we have a good variety in our pace attack. They are still pretty inexperienced but experience can also come from learning quickly, and we hope they have done that. It will be so very crucial for them as a unit to stay disciplined and not try too much. It’s just about ensuring that we get these young men’s minds right.”The BCCI had asked former India captain Rahul Dravid to spend some time with the team ahead of the series on the team management’s request. Fletcher said Dravid’s presence would help not only the batsmen, but also the bowlers, who the coach wanted to think like batsmen do.”People would think I have called him to help the batsmen,” Fletcher said. “But actually it’s as much for the bowlers. What people don’t understand is that the bowlers think like bowlers. I want Rahul to talk to them and make them think like batsmen. That way they will know what areas a batsman likes and doesn’t like, which will help them a great deal in forming their strategies. The problem is that the Indian bowlers don’t bat or practise batting when they’re playing domestic cricket. And so, while they understand their bowling, they don’t understand batting.”Rahul can play a role right through. His approach and his character is so good. I’ve really enjoyed talking cricket with Rahul. I really rated him and wanted him back in the side for some time now. We’ve had some chats since he got here and discussed various ideas and possibilities. What I also like about him is that he can relate to the players culturally. Also, if a player gets the same message from more than one person, he is going to be more convinced about it.”Dravid was India’s most successful batsman on the previous tour of England in 2011 and since then, the team has been in transition since with several experienced players retiring or being dropped. Fletcher said his coaching methods had also changed as he had to deal with young players now.”Fortunately for me, I went through a similar phase with England where the older players were left out or retired and a whole new generation of cricketers came in. The major difference is that with the older ones you just sit back and let them come to you. No matter how good and experienced one is, bad habits sometimes creep in and you’ve got to help them get rid of those small bad habits without being too overbearing.”The younger players are a bit reluctant because they don’t understand their game fully. So, you’ve got to go to them and talk to them. However, you have to make sure you send the message very clearly because otherwise they can get confused and start making their game more difficult. You keep the communication very simple and don’t make more than one change at a time, even though some players might require more than one change – technically and mentally. The key is to change only one link of the chain at a time. If you change two, you don’t know which one will confuse the player. That’s why it takes time. Cricket is not an easy game to improve at in a short time.”

Fortaleza: Felipe Alves, Tinga, Juan Quintero, Roger Carvalho e Carlinhos; Felipe, Paulo Roberto e Edinho; Wellington Paulista, Júnior Santos e Osvaldo.

Coach wants Bangladesh to acclimatise for World Cup

Shane Jurgensen, the Bangladesh coach, wants most of his players to get accustomed to conditions in Australia and New Zealand well before the 2015 World Cup

Mohammad Isam10-Sep-2013Shane Jurgensen, the Bangladesh coach, wants most of his players to get accustomed to conditions in Australia and New Zealand well before the 2015 World Cup. He believes that players like Mushfiqur Rahim, Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal will be at their physical peak during the tournament, which would help the team try and make it to the second round.Apart from an A team tour to the region, Jurgensen would like groups of players to take part in training sessions and tournaments in his native country. Bangladesh last visited New Zealand in 2010 for one Test, three ODIs and a Twenty20 while their previous trip to Australia in 2008 had only three ODIs. They have never won in either country in 20 games.Bangladesh will play four matches in Australia and two in New Zealand in the 2015 World Cup. Jurgensen believes the conditions in those places won’t be too hard. “The boys will be more evolved, have more experience in the next 18 months,” Jurgensen told the Bengali newspaper . “Most of them will be 26-27 or 28. They will also be at their physical peak. The venues won’t be a big obstacle too. Wickets are good at the Gabba, in Canberra, Adelaide, Melbourne, Hamilton and Nelson.”We will try to send an A team to Australia, and send players to play different tournaments there. Tamim and Shakib can easily play in the Big Bash, while some can play club or grade cricket. We could send four or five pace bowlers to train in Queensland. We have former Bangladesh coach Stuart Law, who is now at the Centre of Excellence. We also have [trainer] Stuart Karpinnen and [academy head coach] Richard McInnes working here in Bangladesh, so we can work something out.”Jurgensen put particular significance on Bangladesh’s performance in global events like the 50-over World Cup, because it is in these tournaments that the world fully notices the country’s progress in the game. Apart from that, he would like to end his two-year stint with discernible improvement on the field as well as in the numbers.”Their improvement should be visible on the field, and in their rankings. I would like to see them rise in the ODI and Twenty20 rankings. Draw and win Tests and do well in global events. The cricketing world will see our improvement. So it is very important that we cross the group stages of the 2015 World Cup. I think we can.”The 37-year-old Jurgensen said he was a supporter of keeping things calm in the dressing room rather than flying off the handle after the team loses. “There’s already a lot of pressure in international cricket so I don’t want to be an angry headmaster and put more pressure on them. I have always wanted to create an environment or pass on the message to the guys that at least before, during and just after the match, there will be no anger in the dressing-room.”It is important that there is consistency in behaviour, similar to on-field consistency. I like to be tough with them for a reason, so that they realise it is not a personal attack.”Having been the head coach since November 2012, Jurgensen said the Bangladesh players have faith in him. He was handed a two-year deal earlier this year, having held a temporary position after Richard Pybus’ abrupt departure last year.”I think I have gained their trust. It is important to understand them, because sometimes they can have a bad mood, have a bad day. Maybe their morning hasn’t started too well or (they’ve) had some family problems. So the coach has to be a spy, a guru and sometimes a psychologist.”

Maiden ton for captain Wakely

ScorecardNorthants skipper Alex Wakely made his maiden one-day ton•Getty Images

A superb maiden one-day century by Northamptonshire captain Alex Wakely spearheaded a 29-run win against Kent at Tunbridge Wells. The win takes Northants into third place in Group A of the Yorkshire Bank 40.There was also a fine 88 from Northamptonshire opener Rob Newton, who added 144 in 18 overs with Wakely before he was forced to retire hurt with an ankle injury.Northamptonshire, asked to bat first, totalled 263 for 4 and then bowled with great discipline to restrict Kent to 234 all out in reply on a fast-scoring ground. Trent Copeland finished with four for 46 while Lee Daggett particularly outstanding as he took 2 for 28 from his eight-over allocation.Kent were 132 for 1 in the 24th over before a mid-innings collapse to 149 for 5 left them with too much to do in the last 10 overs.Alex Blake did his best to revive the innings by hitting 43 from just 24 balls, including a six and seven fours, but when he sliced a catch to cover off Copeland in the third of the four batting powerplay overs there were only a few more defiant blows from Matt Coles before Northamptonshire’s victory was confirmed. This was Kent’s third defeat in seven games in the competition and, even though they remain in second place in the group table, they will now struggle to qualify as leaders Nottinghamshire already have five wins from five games and are odds-on favourites to finish top later in the season.Wakely’s 102 came from just 77 balls, with four sixes and seven fours, and he provided the major impetus with a stream of fine strokes, including three extra cover boundaries in a single over from offspinner Adam Riley.Newton was never as fluent, as his 88 took 103 balls, but he struck two sixes and eight fours in all and was just beginning to put real pressure on Kent’s bowlers when, in the 35th over, he suffered the injury to his right ankle in freakish fashion. Going down on one knee, Newton badly twisted his ankle as he flipped a ball over his left shoulder to the fine leg boundary for his eighth four. After contorting himself to pull off the stroke against left-arm seamer Adam Ball, Newton crumpled in pain in the crease and could only continue after receiving treatment as he lay on the pitch. Given a runner, he straight drove Ball’s next delivery over long off for six, but flinched with pain again as he played the shot and had to hobble from the field.Wakely completed his brilliant hundred at the start of the last over, lofting Calum Haggett over mid off for four, but then skied a catch from the next ball after Northamptonshire had also lost David Willey to a mishit to deep square cover off Coles. For Kent, Haggett and Coles bowled excellently with the new ball and Darren Stevens was his usual metronomic self with his medium-paced swing and cut.Riley, apart from one expensive over, was tidy but Ball did not look comfortable in the batting powerplay overs and Kent clearly missed their captain James Tredwell, away with England’s one-day team, and the injured seamer Mark Davies.Northamptonshire bowled and fielded better than Kent as a unit, with Stevens run out for 10 by an excellent pick up and throw from Mohammad Azharullah coming in from long leg, and – as in their previous defeat at Sussex – Kent seemed to get themselves in a tangle with their choice of batting order after a good start.Sam Northeast, with 41 from 51 balls, added 64 for the first wicket with Sam Billings, who went on to 57 from 67 balls as he put on a further 68 for the second wicket with Brendan Nash. But when Nash skied a catch on 32 and Billings was bowled swinging at Daggett, the innings lost momentum at a crucial stage as Northamptonshire seized their chance.

Sri Lanka not distracted by IPL developments – Mathews

While the political storm over Sri Lankan players’ involvement in the IPL rages in India, Angelo Mathews has insisted his side is focussed solely on the series at hand, against Bangladesh

Andrew Fidel Fernando27-Mar-2013While the political storm over Sri Lankan players’ involvement in the IPL rages in India, Angelo Mathews has insisted his side is focussed solely on the series at hand, against Bangladesh. Sri Lanka have an ODI and Twenty20 to play before the tour is completed, and must win the final game to take the series, after rain forced the abandonment of the second match.Ten of Sri Lanka’s playing XI for the first two ODIs have been contracted to IPL teams for the 2013 season, and most players had planned to leave for India as soon as their national commitments for this series had been fulfilled. Nuwan Kulasekara will not be joining his IPL side as scheduled, however, after the Chennai Super Kings franchise instructed both him and Akila Dananjaya to postpone their travel to Chennai, and although the remaining players will travel to India as planned, they will not be play any league matches in Tamil Nadu. The BCCI had ruled on Tuesday that no Sri Lankan player would participate in matches in Chennai, and Sri Lanka Cricket reinforced that rule on Wednesday, when they decided to add a caveat to the players’ no objection certificates, stating they cannot play matches in Tamil Nadu. “Based on a note sent by the minister of external affairs regarding the safety of players, and reports appearing in the electronic and print media, it was decided that the no objection certificates issued to the players be restricted to exclude their appearance at any venue in the state of Tamil Nadu, and also to obtain the Players’ personal opinion on their willingness to participate in the event,” a release said. The players are understood to be largely satisfied with the security arrangements elsewhere in India.SLC had effectively cleared Sri Lanka’s schedule to accommodate the full IPL tournament by cancelling a Test tour of the West Indies, and postponing a Test series against South Africa until 2015 – though the latter was also due to a scheduling conflict with the Sri Lanka Premier League. The indebted board relies on income from the IPL, which comes in the form of a 10% cut of player salaries.Although the players have been urged by some, including Arjuna Ranatunga, to boycott the IPL, they are unlikely to do so, particularly given they have the board’s implicit support to play in the tournament. Some players had flights changed, so as to avoid being routed through Tamil Nadu, but will join their teams as planned over the next week.Mathews said he and his team were aware of the evolving situation, but had left the decision in the hands of the two boards. “As far as the players are concerned, we’ve got nothing to do with it. We’ve always enjoyed playing in India. But there is a situation and the cricket board will let us know on that. As far as the team is concerned we’re not very much bothered.”It’s not a distraction at all. We’re not concentrating on the IPL right now. We’ve got one ODI and a Twenty20 against Bangladesh to go, so we’re concentrating on that. Maybe after the two games, we can look into it, but for now we’re not interested in it.”
