Tottenham Hotspur: Conte shares Sessegnon injury ‘problem’

Tottenham manager Antonio Conte shared an injury update on Ryan Sessegnon immediately after Spurs’ 5-0 demolition of Everton.

The Lowdown: Spurs thump Everton

The Lilywhites ran riot on Monday night, destroying relegation-threatened Everton with a 5-0 win in one of Conte’s side’s most emphatic performances since arriving at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Spurs were dominant from the off, with the pressure leading to a Michael Keane own goal in the 14th minute. Shortly after, Son Heung-Min doubled the score-line before a VAR review ruled Harry Kane onside after the England skipper ran onto to a sublime pass from Matt Doherty.

Keane was replaced at half-time as Toffees boss Frank Lampard sought change in the second half. However, substitute Sergio Reguilon swept home just 41 seconds after the restart, dashing any hopes of Everton pulling back a point. Tottenham’s star striker finalised the result with a stunning volley in the 55th minute, surpassing Thierry Henry in the Premier League goal scoring record books in the process.

The Latest: Sessegnon’s injury

Sessegnon started for Conte’s side yesterday, looking to secure himself regular first-team action under his new boss. However, the left wing-back was replaced at half-time after suffering a muscle issue.

In his post-match press conference, Conte addressed the situation, clearly worried and upset for the 21-year-old suffering yet another injury – he has missed 20 games as a Spurs player with three different muscle problems.

As quoted by football.london, he said:

“Ryan Sessegnon we have to make evaluation tomorrow. I hope nothing serious as it is a muscular problem. I hope nothing serious because every time this player is having continuity of performance and then something wrong or little injury. I hope is nothing serious.”

The Verdict: Blow for Sessegnon, but Reguilon’s back

This injury will come as a huge blow for Sessegnon, who has been on the receiving end of more playing time in recent weeks, having started Spurs’ last five Premier League games.

As a result, he will be gutted if the sustained injury is serious, given the fact that he was amassing a strong run of form, firing in the cross for Keane’s own goal on Monday night.

However, on a more positive note for Conte, Reguilon appears to be fully fit after recently testing positive for Covid-19.

Therefore, if the Spaniard returns to the side in flying form, it may be hard for Sessegnon to regain his place in the starting XI.

Leeds: Noel Whelan makes Patrick Bamford claim

Leeds United pundit Noel Whelan has made a worrying claim regarding Patrick Bamford’s injury issues, Football Insider report.

The Lowdown: Bielsa’s concern

Bamford has missed 15 Premier League games this season with ankle and hamstring problems, with his last start coming way back in September away to Newcastle.

Marcelo Bielsa revealed prior to Leeds’ trip to Aston Villa that the striker hasn’t started running yet, with no improvement on latest injury.

The Whites boss admitted he was worried by Bamford’s continued spell on the sidelines, with winger Daniel James filling in up front on five occasions.

James could well lead the line once again at Villa Park after starting as a centre-forward against West Ham and Newcastle prior to the international break.

The Latest: Whelan’s comments

Whelan, labelled as a Leeds employee for his work with the club’s foundation by Football Insider, described Bamford’s absence as a ‘big worry’ and doesn’t think the striker will be back within the next four weeks.

“I don’t think this will be a short-term injury.

“We’ve desperately missed him, we don’t have another striker like him. He’s irreplaceable.

“It’s always a big worry when your natural centre-forward is out injured, you start to wonder where the goals are going to come from.

“It doesn’t seem like we’re going to see him in the next four weeks. Some of our attackers are going to have to step up and deputise, as they have been doing for the most part of this season now.

“You just can’t put your finger on how or why we’ve suffered all these injuries this season.

“It’d be a massive bonus to get him back but I just can’t see that happening now in the next month.”

The Verdict: Not good

Should Bamford not return within the next four weeks, he could be in danger of missing the next six fixtures.

By that time, you’d expect the Whites will either be sitting pretty clear of the bottom three or in a real relegation dog fight after 27 games played.

Bamford could be needed in the final 11 fixtures, starting with Norwich on March 12, however, hopefully, the Whites will pick up some positive results against tough opposition between now and then.

Celtic: Hoops tracking Sinclair Armstrong

Celtic are thought to be interested in young Irish forward Sinclair Armstrong, according to Goal.

The Lowdown: Armstrong links

Armstrong is 18 years of age and is an out-and-out centre-forward currently on the books with QPR in the English Championship.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-copy/” title=”Celtic updates!! (Copy)” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

He spent part of the current campaign on loan at National League side Torquay United, scoring twice in eight appearances, with Gulls manager Gary Johnson describing him as ‘quick’.

The Hoops were linked with a move for the teenager when Neil Lennon was still in charge last year, and it appears that he is still of interest to Parkhead chiefs.

The Latest: Hoops name-checked

Goal name-checked Celtic with an interest in Armstrong in their live transfer blog (17/01, 10:02).

They suggested that the Hoops have been tracking the forward for a long period of time, with the likes of Brentford, Southampton and Hoffenheim also keen.

However, Manchester City are thought to be leading the race for his services, with the Premier League champions keen to loan him out to one of their City Football Group clubs for a few years.

The Verdict: Another Irish addition?

Ange Postecoglou has already signed three Irish players in James McCarthy, Liam Scales and Johnny Kenny.

Young forward Kenny was the most recent of the three to move to Celtic Park, and you’d expect that Armstrong is also viewed as a future star by Celtic scouts.

He is clearly held in high esteem with a hugely successful club in Man City extremely keen on him, so if the Hoops could somehow win the race for his services, it could be an excellent piece of business in the long run.

Técnico do Galo justifica ausência de Luan no Campeonato Mineiro

MatériaMais Notícias

A ausência de Luan no time do Atlético-MG é notável.

Everton: Jones’ Roberto Martinez claim

The ‘brighter future’ Everton anticipated when they sacked Roberto Martinez has only gotten worse since his departure, leading to rumours of a return to the Toffees dugout for the Spaniard.

The lowdown

Martinez took charge in June 2013 and led Everton to fifth place in his first season at the helm. Their tally of 72 points remains the highest they have achieved since they last won the league title in 1986/97.

But things went downhill after, with consecutive bottom half finishes resulting in Martinez’s dismissal at the end of the 2015/16 season.

Now, following the sacking of Rafael Benitez’s sacking last weekend, a return to Goodison Park has been mooted.

Everton have approached the Belgian FA over the 48-year-old, and while The Red Devils have effectively said no, he does have the option to resign (via The Athletic).

The latest

Dean Jones, a transfer insider with Eurosport, feels that Everton’s problems have only intensified in the post-Martinez era.

“Maybe at the time of parting with Martinez as it seemed like a way to a brighter future,” he told The Transfer Tavern this week.

“But in hindsight things have got even worse and more chaotic since he’s been gone.”

The verdict

Is Jones’ assessment fair? Well, Everton are currently in the process of lining up their sixth permanent appointment since his sacking, which was only six years ago, so it’s hard to dispute the use of the word ‘chaotic’.

What about their league placings?

Between 2016/17 and 2018/19, The Toffees enjoyed three straight top-eight finishes, so things did get better in the short-term.

But they dropped to 12th and 10th under Carlo Ancelotti, and now they’re only six points above the relegation zone in 16th.

This may be as bad as it’s even been in the post-David Moyes years,

In other news, this announcement left fans in disbelief.

Spurs preparing offer for Franck Kessie

Tottenham Hotspur are preparing an offer to bring Franck Kessie to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the January transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by SportMediaset (via Milan News), who claim that Antonio Conte and Fabio Paratici are hoping to secure a deal for the AC Milan midfielder this January, and have offered I Rossoneri the services of Tanguy Ndombele as a makeweight in their bid to sign the 25-year-old immediately.

Previous reports had claimed that Spurs were preparing a lucrative pre-contract offer for the Ivory Coast international ahead of a potential switch to north London at the end of the season, however, it would now appear as if Conte is actually attempting to seal a deal for the midfielder in the current transfer window.

Conte’s next Pogba

Considering just how impressive Kessie has been for Milan in recent seasons, it is not difficult to understand why Conte is reported to be so eager to secure the midfielder’s arrival at Tottenham before the end of the month.

Indeed, over his 37 Serie A appearances last time out, the £25m-rated man was in remarkable form for his side, scoring an astonishing 13 goals, registering four assists and creating five big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 1.3 shots and making 0.8 key passes per game.

These returns saw the player who Antonio Cassano dubbed a “devastating” talent earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 7.18, ranking him as Milan’s third-best performer in the top flight of Serie A last season.

The £69k-per-week midfielder has continued this impressive form over his 16 league outings in the current campaign, having already bagged five goals and created one big chance for his teammates, with these metrics seeing the 25-year-old average a SofaScore match rating of 7.19.

In fact, Kessie’s returns are not dissimilar to those of Paul Pogba during his first season under Conte at Juventus, when the France international scored seven goals and registered 11 assists over his 36 Serie A appearances back in 2013/14.

As such, should Spurs manage to get a deal over the line for the 52-capped international this January, the 52-year-old could well go on to unearth his next Pogba at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the second half of the Premier League season – an outcome that would undoubtedly be worth the cost of signing the midfielder now rather than waiting until the summer.
