Sheffield United linked with Joe Allen

Sheffield United look set to be offered a deal to bring Joe Allen to Bramall Lane this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by the Sheffield Star, who claim that, despite the Stoke City manager Michael O’Neill stating that the 31-year-old is not for sale in the summer transfer window, Slavisa Jokanovic’s side have been informed that they will nevertheless be offered a chance to sign the midfielder ahead of next season.

The report goes on to state that it remains unclear at present whether or not the new Blades boss will be interested in bringing the Wales international to the club this summer, although The Star suggest that the departure of John Lundstram, coupled with Sander Berge being heavily linked with a transfer out of Bramall Lane, will leave the 52-year-old requiring greater depth in the position.

Jokanovic must not move

While Allen is a player who boasts a significant amount of Premier League and Championship experience, there is a very strong argument to make against United making a move for the midfielder this summer.

Firstly, with Allen now being 31 years of age, despite the £1.8m-rated man having highly impressed in the top flight of English football during his spell at Liverpool, with Jurgen Klopp dubbing Allen an “unbelievable” player, the midfielder is very much now entering the twilight years of his footballing career, meaning it would be unlikely that Jokanovic would gain any resale value if he were to sign the Welshman this summer.

This leads nicely on to the second drawback of a move for Allen, as the midfielder is thought to be earning a whopping £50k-per-week at the bet356 Stadium.

If United were to bring Allen in on a deal of this size in the summer transfer window, he would immediately become the club’s highest-paid player, with the midfielder simply not appearing to be worth such an amount relative to the rest of the Blades’ squad.

Finally, with the former Swansea City man also having been spent two rather lengthy spells on the sidelines for Stoke last season, due to both an Achilles tendon rupture and a hamstring injury, just how much game time Allen would go on to get after a potential switch to the Blades would seem to be something of a lottery.

As such, a move for Allen this summer would appear to be highly unadvisable for Sheffield United, as there will undoubtedly be cheaper, fitter and younger options available to Jokanovic on the market this summer.

Fry on West Ham transfer targets

Barry Fry believes David Moyes may look to the Championship as he bids to bolster his West Ham United squad ahead of a return to European football.

The Hammers are set to feature in the Europa League for the first time since they lost to Romanian side Astra Giurgiu in the qualifying rounds five years ago.

West Ham booked their place in Europe thanks to breaking their record Premier League points tally last season and Moyes, who is enjoying his second spell in charge of the east Londoners, is keen to add strength in depth ahead of the transfer window slamming shut.

Since returning to the London Stadium, Moyes has moved away from Manuel Pellegrini’s transfer strategy of bringing in the likes of Felipe Anderson and Sebastien Haller from abroad and instead spent his transfer budget on exciting attackers in the Championship.

Jarrod Bowen has shone since switching from Hull City, then of the Championship, in 2020, while Said Benrahma joined from Brentford last summer.

Bowen and Benrahma could be set to play key roles after Jesse Lingard’s loan from Manchester United expired at the end of the season.

Peterborough United director of football Barry Fry, who worked with West Ham co-owners David Sullivan and David Gold during their time at Birmingham City, feels Moyes could benefit from looking to English football’s second tier once again.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, Fry said: “David Moyes got the two David’s to invest in two players from the Championship.

“I know David Sullivan very well and he’s a shrewd judge but he doesn’t really like going down the leagues if they’re not proven Premier League players.

“The two gambles have all paid off. Bowen and Benrahma have been marvellous.”

West Ham eye shocking Lingard alternative

After suffering a cruel blow to their chances of signing Jesse Lingard permanently, West Ham United have been handed a fresh update on a potential alternative…

What’s the word?

As revealed by the ever-reliable ExWHUemployee, the 28-year-old loan sensation could sign a new contract at Manchester United, where he is now expected to fight for his place under Ole Gunner Solskjaer.

The Hammers have been linked to a few different options in the event that they cannot secure a permanent move for Lingard, including West Brom’s Matheus Pereira and Chelsea outcast Ross Barkley, who David Moyes handed a debut to at Everton.

It is the latter who is thought to have been made available for transfer following the latest claims this week.

Goal.com’s Nizaar Kinsella suggests that the Blues are open to selling him this summer after Aston Villa opted against signing him following his loan spell.

It’s thought that they value the 33-time England international at around £30m.

Shocking alternative

If Moyes wants to fill the gap left behind by Lingard successfully, then he’s probably barking up the wrong tree by considering his former midfielder and he must avoid making a move for him amid this latest update.

After starting the season in sparkling form, the 27-year-old tailed off into oblivion by the end of the 2020/21 campaign in what was ultimately a microcosm of his career so far.

Barkley scored in his opening two matches for Villa and then played a crucial role in the thrashing of Arsenal, where he provided an assist but in his following 19 appearances for the Midlands side, he managed just one further goal.

Indeed, the Chelsea flop failed to feature in Dean Smith’s starting XI in their final three games of the season, so it’s no wonder they have not signed him permanently.

Speaking about his struggles, The Athletic’s Gregg Evans slammed Barkley as a “liability” on their 1874 podcast back in April.

“He doesn’t do enough for me now,” he said. “I’ve seen enough of Ross Barkley now to realise that he’s becoming a bit of a liability for Villa. He’s not helping out enough as he should, really.”

Lingard, who played in a similar role in East London, was quite the contract. He found the net nine times and also provided four assists, finishing the season as Moyes’ second-highest rated player (7.22) behind Tomas Soucek (7.36).

He’s going to be a hard man to replace at the London Stadium but what is clear is that Barkley would be a shocking alternative and one major downgrade, which just isn’t what the Irons need as they embark on a historic season.

The £18m-rated dud, who earns an eye-watering £100k-per-week at Stamford Bridge, must not be signed this summer, whatever the circumstance.

Moyes simply risks a transfer disaster with this one.

Pundit warns Everton to stay away from Real Madrid’s Marcelo

Marcelo should be a no for Everton, that is according to former Premier League midfielder Carlton Palmer.

The Real Madrid star is currently being linked with a move to Goodison Park, with the Mirror claiming the Toffees and Palmer’s old side Leeds United are both in the frame to sign him.

The 58-cap Brazilian only played 16 league fixtures last season, firmly behind Ferland Mendy in the left-back pecking order at the Santiago Bernabeu. He is also now 33 years of age, so he is not exactly getting any younger.

Ultimately, for Palmer, Real Madrid letting him go is a huge red flag. Speaking about the reports linking Marcelo to Everton, the ex-Leeds player told TT:

“For me, I think Marcelo at 33, no. Why are Real Madrid letting him go? You’ve always got to question that. Why are Real Madrid letting him go? Why have Real Madrid let [Sergio] Ramos go? You’ve always got to ask yourself a question.”

At Everton, Marcelo could easily find himself behind another France international in Lucas Digne.

Going forward, the 27-year-old has really come up with the goods for the Toffees. He assisted seven goals last season in the Premier League and another seven the campaign prior, truly impressive numbers for a full-back.

Barry Fry claims Tottenham have everything needed to succeed

It hasn’t been a great 12 months for Tottenham Hotspur as they failed to qualify for the Europa League, have no manager and could be set to lose Harry Kane, but despite this Peterborough’s Director of Football Barry Fry has claimed that Spurs have everything in place to succeed.

There is no secret in the fact that Spurs have been turned down or failed to offer anyone the manager’s position with the likes of Antonio Conte and Paulo Fonseca all failing to agree on terms and a plan to be at the club.

Their squad is a mixture of top-class players and ones that have failed to live up to expectations over the last 12-18 months, but with arguably the best stadium and training facilities in Europe it is quite bizarre that they have failed to fill the void left by Jose Mourinho earlier this year.

From the outside looking in, it appears that Spurs could be in a bit of trouble this summer if they can’t get a manager in place soon to bring in new players and convince Kane to stay, however Fry believes that they have everything in place and necessary to succeed, as he told Football FanCast exclusively:

“They’ve got the best stadium in the world and one of the best training grounds in the world so they’ve got everything in place but they’re not getting it right on the pitch.”

Spurs appeared to be set for a prolonged period of time challenging at the top of the Premier League after they came close to winning the league in 2016, and then made the Champions League final in 2019, but since Mauricio Pochettino’s departure the club has been spiralling down the league.

Despite having a top stadium and training facilities, they may struggle to attract the best players with the only European football they have to offer is the newly-formed Europa Conference League which does not seem appealing to many clubs or players.

Rangers fans on Gerrard update

Many Rangers fans have been left to buzz as the Glasgow club’s official website confirmed that Steven Gerrard had won another manager award.

The Liverpool and England international legend was presented with the Special Achievement Award from the League Managers Association (LMA), as he was recognised for guiding the Gers through their title-winning season in 2020/21 without losing a single match in the SPFL.

To go through a whole domestic campaign unbeaten is not easy in any league, but Gerrard managed to do that while rarely even breaking a sweat as the Light Blues ended the previous domination of the league by their bitter rivals Celtic over the last decade.

This award is thoroughly deserved, and several members of the Ibrox faithful have been showing their appreciation to Gerrard for his achievement.

Another boost for young CD side, a win in Perth

Central Districts kept their hopes alive in the Champions Cup tournament by beating Indian side Mumbai by 106 runs in Perth last night.CD will now meet the Australian entrant, the Western Warriors, tonight in Perth (NZ time) and will need to win if it is to be a chance of playing in the final on Wednesday.Mumbai ended the tournament winless, and it was well beaten last night.Mumbai asked CD to bat first, and must have been delighted when having the New Zealand Shell Cup champions 88/5, but a superb 108-run partnership between captain Jacob Oram and Glen Sulzberger got CD out of a hole and set up the winning margin.Oram showed some of the big-hitting form that made him such an important new figure in the New Zealand’s international one-day programme this year. He hit three sixes, each on of them memorable blows which gave the scoring a jolt at just the right stage.Sulzberger also moved the ball around, picking up the odd boundary to do his share in the stand.Oram brought up his 50 off 51 balls and went on to score 74 off 64 balls. The only criticism of his innings could be that he looked set to score three figures but got himself out, caught in the deep when he couldn’t get enough power into a skied shot to avoid a fieldsman at deep mid off.Sulzberger scored his 50 off 56 balls and the pair added the runs between 150 and 200 in 31 balls.Once they had departed, 18-year-old Greg Todd showed great maturity in his batting to keep the attacking momentum going by scoring 29 off 27 balls while Andrew Schwass chimed in with 22 off 16 balls.CD ended their 50 overs with 269/9 with left-arm spinner Nilesh Kulkarni taking 3-38 while Santosh Saxena, who had taken out the top order finished with 3-39.Mumbai, facing a tough battle to keep their hopes alive, were unable to handle the early pressure, found themselves 11/3. But another 18-year-old in the game, Vinayak Mane kept Mumbai in the hunt with a solo hand with 53 runs.He found a suitable ally in Sairaj Bahutule but he was out attempting to hit off spinner Glen Sulzberger only to be caught in the deep for 38, scored off 46 balls. That came down to CD bowling pressure. There was a looseness at times, especially in the bowling of too many wides. But Brent Hefford bowled superbly, while Oram tied the batsmen down and after he was hammered earlier, with 35 runs off his first four overs, Andrew Schwass came back very well and was sitting on a hat trick at one stage.Schwass ended the innings the most successful bowler with three wickets for 43 runs while Sulzberger took two for 28.The CD success has left plenty of interest in the last game of the round robin phase of the tournament.Coach Dipak Patel said the side could not be over-awed by the job in front of them and was sure the young side would be ready for the big game.It was a chance for the side to be positive and for the players to learn where they were at in their game.Skipper Jacob Oram praised Sulzberger’s contribution to their partnership.”I was amazed the way he batted and came out and hit the ball in the middle from the start. He was the impetus we needed,” he said.Oram was delighted with his innings although he said that if there was a fault he should have gone on until the 45th over.He said the side would have to play a lot better to compete with the Wests side. The top order would have to contribute with the bat and the bowlers would have to be a lot more accurate and not concede so many wides. They bowled 19 wides and five no balls.

West Ham handed fresh Abraham blow

West Ham United have been dealt a fresh blow in their pursuit to sign Tammy Abraham this summer…

What’s the word?

According to the Evening Standard, Italian giants AC Milan are set to offer the 23-year-old striker a way out of Chelsea at the end of the season, dealing a setback towards the Hammers’ chances of securing him.

It is widely believed that the England international is David Moyes’ top target to fill that attacking void ahead of next season, as per the ever-reliable ExWHUemployee.

However, the Irons face a likely transfer tussle to secure him as Milan are not the only team keen on signing him. Aston Villa and Newcastle United have also been mooted with interest over the weekend, via ESPN.

Moyes won’t be happy

This latest development won’t come as good news to Moyes, especially if the £36m-rated forward is genuinely his top transfer target this summer.

It does seem that Abraham will be leaving Stamford Bridge in the near future, as the Evening Standard reports that Thomas Tuchel is eyeing a new striker of which Romelu Lukaku and Erling Haaland feature as targets.

That makes Abraham a very appealing target, given he’s done no wrong to warrant his recent omission from the Blues’ starting line-up.

The 6 foot 3 beast, who earns around £57k-per-week in west London, remains their joint top-goalscorer in the Premier League on six goals, whilst he has delivered 12 goals across all competitions this term, three more than any West Ham star.

Despite a lack of game time, he’s still built on his impressive 2019/20 exploits, where he found the net 18 times across 42 top-flight and Champions League appearances under Frank Lampard.

Alex McLeish even recently dubbed him a “phenomenal player” in an interview with Football Insider, so it really is a surprise to see him struggle for minutes.

It’s no secret that the Hammers desperately need attacking options, as they cannot rely on the injury-prone Michail Antonio to lead the line by himself in what is likely to be a huge season next year.

After selling Sebastien Haller in January, Moyes was left with only one senior striker and he’s only been able to feature 21 times in the Premier League this term, missing their last three games through injury.

Abraham’s experience and proven goalscoring record in England very much does make him a viable target, and quite rightly, he sits high on Moyes’ priorities.

But interest from teams of Milan’s calibre are hugely worrying. The 58-year-old Scot won’t be happy if he misses out on the 23-year-old this summer.

AND in other news, Moyes heading for West Ham transfer mistake over £9m-rated flop he once dubbed “unplayable”…
