Will Tavare produced a back-to-the-wall innings reminiscent of his famous uncle to help Gloucestershire salvage a draw against Glamorgan at Bristol.Having seen the visitors claim a first innings lead of 224 before declaring at 615 for 7 on the final morning, Tavare opened Gloucestershire’s second innings and faced 167 balls in a fighting knock of 41, occupying more than three and a half hours. It enabled the hosts to reach 165 for 5 when the players shook hands with a possible five overs remaining. Former Kent and Somerset batsman Chris Tavare, who built a reputation as a stone-waller with England would have been rightly proud of his 24-year-old nephew.Ian Cockbain contributed 25 off 97 balls to a fourth-wicket stand of 44 with Tavare that used up 32.1 overs before Will Gidman’s 47 not out ensured Gloucestershire of a draw.Glamorgan’s bowlers toiled hard on a pitch which had been unresponsive throughout the game, but had to be content with 12 points from the game to their opponents’ nine. The final day began with Glamorgan batting on for five overs, extending an overnight lead of 178. Ruaidhri Smith was 57 not out off 111 balls when the declaration came. There were some forgettable bowling figures for Gloucestershire. Left-arm spinner Tom Smith went for 183 from his 52 overs, while claiming three wickets, and seamers Liam Norwell and Matt Taylor also registered unwanted centuries in runs conceded. But it was a memorable baptism for 17-year-old debutant wicketkeeper Patrick Grieshaber, who conceded 17 byes, largely as a result of wayward bowling, in standing behind the stumps for 159 overs.Glamorgan looked set to press home their advantage when Graham Wagg struck twice and Jacques Rudolph claimed a stunning slip catch of Jim Allenby to reduce Gloucestershire to 49 for 3 at lunch. But Tavare and Cockbain then dug in for most of the afternoon session. At one point the pair played out 57 consecutive dot balls as they battled to save the game.Cockbain was eventually caught at slip off the occasional leg-spin of Rudolph and at tea the home side were 103 for 4 with 34 more overs due to be bowled. Tavare perished in the final session, gloving a leg side catch to wicketkeeper Mark Wallace off Smith, but Gidman and Benny Howell saw Gloucestershire to safety.Glamorgan coach Toby Radford said: “I’m proud of the way the bowlers stuck to their task and our efforts in building a big lead in the face of a near 400 total. But in the end the pitch didn’t deteriorate sufficiently for us to force the win.”Gloucestershire have signed 21-year-old former Hampshire wicketkeeper Adam Rouse on a one-month trial to help provide cover for the injured Cameron Herring and Gareth Roderick.Director of cricket John Bracewell said: “Patrick Grieshaber kept well in this match and will share first team duties with Adam. It was not realistic to expect a 17-year-old to play in all the matches while Cameron and Gareth are out.”

Yuvraj, Ashwin deliver clean sweep

Yuvraj Singh roared back to form with a 60 before R Ashwin took four wickets to give India a clean sweep in the group stage

Cullinan: Australia played like a defeated team

We’ve been expecting you, Mr Singh. Many an India fan wanted Yuvraj Singh out because he had been plodding and prodding around this tournament even though he took most wickets and scored most runs for India between the two World Twenty20s. India, though, persisted with him, even giving him an extra chance at the expense of Shikhar Dhawan who made way for Ajinkya Rahane who simply had to be tried. Yuvraj struggled here again, reaching 13 off 21 before he exploded to end up with 60 off 43, showing just why MS Dhoni has shown so much faith in him. That innings provided a middling innings the acceleration it needed, after which R Ashwin’s wily spin triggered an almighty collapse from Australia, who were already out of the tournament and weren’t quite there in the chase.Pakistan’s win over Bangladesh earlier in the day had already knocked Australia out, but India still had a lot of interest in this match. All their previous wins had come winning the toss and bowling first, so they wanted to bat first and also wanted to play around with their combination a little. Rahane’s inclusion and Mohit Sharma’s were the decisions made before the toss, and even though Dhoni finally lost a toss – his first in 13 internationals – India got their wish when George Bailey inserted them in.India’s worst first 10 overs of the tournament followed as Rohit Sharma fell early, and Rahane and Virat Kohli failed to convert starts. Suresh Raina didn’t look at home either, and at 66 for 4 in the 12th over, India were struggling for the first time in the tournament. Yuvraj had only just about start timing the ball, and in the next over Brad Hodge provided him a long hop to get away a bit. James Muirhead came on to bowl the 14th. Australia’s spinners had suffocated India by then, conceding just 40 in seven overs. This time, though, the legspinner missed his length two balls in a row. You couldn’t have got away with that against the vintage Yuvraj. You couldn’t get away with that against this Yuvraj either. He sent them both sailing over midwicket for sixes. He had seen blood now. Some of his silken yet brutal shots came out in the end, most notable of which was his movement away from the stumps to get under a full ball outside leg and send it inside-out over long-off for six.All of a sudden, the bowlers were the ones fumbling, not sure where to bowl because missing the areas even by inches resulted in sixes. Seventy runs came in five overs starting with the 14th, and even though Yuvraj didn’t finish off in style he had given India what looked a fighting total, especially given the form of India’s attack. The only problem with the total was you had to make allowance for the fact that India were up against a side that had nothing to lose. It showed in how Aaron Finch threw his arms at the first ball of the chase, and got four for it. However, Australia were too reckless and India too disciplined for this to become a blitz of any sort. The daredevilry of a side that was on its way out was all there, but the execution wasn’t. After India had bowled a few tight overs at the top, keeping them down to 19 for 1 in four overs, it was all six or out.Yes, there were five sixes, but there were five dismissals doing that as Ashwin spun his way to the best figures by an Indian spinner in Twenty20 internationals, and Australia crashed to their third-worst defeat. Now if the New Zealand-Sri Lanka match is not washed out in the other group, India will face South Africa in the semi-final.

Ashwin adding to his variations

Having been rested from India’s tour of Zimbabwe, R Ashwin, the India offspinner, has been working on adding to his bowling variations. “I have the arm-ball, the carrom ball, and the under-cutter but I am developing a flipper that pitches just short of a length and skids on,” he told . “I am also trying to get the carrom ball that spins into the right-hander. This will add a new dimension to my bowling.”Since his debut in 2011, Ashwin has played 16 Tests and taken 92 wickets at an average of 28.53. In 58 ODIs, the bowler has 80 wickets at an average of 30.83. He attributes his success to sizing up batsmen and ensuring their strengths are kept in check and weaknesses exploited. Against batsmen like Chris Gayle for example, Ashwin said he was focussed on denying the batsman width and room.”If you toss one up and draw him [Gayle] into a stroke and then pull it back a little, because of the revolutions on the ball, instead of clearing either long-on or long-off, he could be caught at mid-off or mid-on.”Against Australia earlier this year, Ashwin finished as the highest wicket-taker in the four-match series, with 29 wickets in eight innings at an average of 20.41. He said the trick to getting good players of spin, like Michael Clarke, out was in understanding the batsman’s technique.”Clarke is a good player of spin, can step out or hang back,” he said. “But then, he defends with hard hands. The trick is to make him play back to a ball that is not really short.”A spinner needs to utilise everything at his disposal to set up a batsman, a fact Ashwin has employed to good effect. Enticing the batsmen into awkward positions and causing trouble to their balance at the crease has also helped the offspinner pick up wickets.”I came round the wicket and got the left-handed Michael Hussey to drive in the Melbourne Test. Then I held one back, he went for the drive, and edged,” he said. “I also bowled one that turned away from Shaun Marsh and then got him with an under-cutter.”When I come wide of the crease to a right-hander, he is looking for something outside the off-stump. If I then send down one on off and middle, his head could falter and his drive could be uppish.”Another variation that Ashwin had added was the wider arm delivery that helped him get side-spin. “Someone with a high-arm action like me will get more over-spin than side-spin. Graeme Swann bowls a lot wider with his arm than I do, so he achieves plenty of side-spin. I also bowl the wider arm delivery to impart side spin these days,” he said.

Calm Namibia seal title win

Namibia won the T20 Quadrangular title, beating Kenya by five wickets in a last-ball finish

ESPNcricinfo staff24-Apr-2013
ScorecardNamibia won the T20 Quadrangular title, beating Kenya by five wickets in a last-ball finish.Set a target of 188 to chase, Namibia raced to 68 in the eighth over, before a couple of quick wickets pegged them back. Opener Pikky Ya France guided the chase and once he departed, Craig Williams and captain Sarel Burger stepped up. With 15 runs needed in the last over, Burger hit a crucial six and took a few crucial runs with Nicolaas Schotlz as Namibia scored the winning runs off the last ball.Earlier, Kenya, who were put in to bat, had a strong start as the openers, Alex Obanda and Tanmay Mishra put on 73 in 8.3 overs. Mishra fell in the 16th over for a 53-ball 68 but a couple of quick knocks from Morris Ouma, Collins Obuya and Rakep Patel took Kenya to a strong 187 for 5.

Chennai knock Dhoni's best – Chappell

Former Australia captain Greg Chappell has rated MS Dhoni’s double-century in Chennai as his best in Tests. Dhoni’s knock of 224 tilted the scales in India’s favour, according to Chappell, and helped them to a 1-0 lead in the four-match series against Australia.”He has played several memorable knocks in one-day cricket, but this was the best I have seen him play in Test matches,” Chappell told .”I have seen him smack a yorker-length delivery from James Anderson for a six. It requires special talent. His success on a crumbling Chennai track stems from his ability to strike the ball hard on pitches where the ball tends to keep low. Had he scored just 124, the match would still have been in the balance. The manner in which he attacked a tiring Australian attack, shielding the tailenders, truly makes him a match-winner.”This was India’s seventh win in the last 21 Tests, five of which have come against West Indies and New Zealand. India lost eight consecutive overseas Tests, and conceded a series at home to England for the first time in 28 years. Chappell accepted that the Indian team looked average on their tour of Australia last summer but maintained that Dhoni’s captaincy shouldn’t be under doubt.”It is true that the Indian team under Dhoni looked below par during their tour Down Under, but he has answered his critics in the best possible way. In my book he remains the best man to lead India in all forms of the game.”At a time when players all over the world are struggling to cope with their workload, it is amazing how Dhoni manages to play every game with the same intensity. That he has done it successfully now for five years speaks volumes about Dhoni’s fitness, mental strength as well as his commitment. India are lucky to have him.”Although Australia crumbled under Dhoni’s onslaught to eventually lose by eight wickets, a few of their players had impressed. One of them was the debutant Moises Henriques, who scored half-centuries in both innings, finishing with an unbeaten 81 in the second dig to help prevent an innings defeat. In Henriques, Chappell saw the makings of a long-term allrounder.”It was good to see Henriques coming good at last. He has been on the fringe for a while. I hope he can be the allrounder that Australia have been looking for, particularly after a question mark over Shane Watson’s ability to contribute with the ball.”Regardless of the result of the first Test, Chappell felt the series wouldn’t be one-sided.”It will be a close series, but thanks to Dhoni, India do have a significant advantage.”

Peter Kruger, Pite van Biljon set up Knights' title win against Dolphins

Bryce Parsons and Jason Smith put up a late fight for Dolphins before they eventually fell short

Firdose Moonda22-Oct-2021Final: Knights beat Dolphins by seven runs
Patrick Kruger’s 61, and handy contributions from Rilee Rossouw, Pite van Biljon and Farhaan Behardien set up Knights’ title-clinching win against Dolphins in the final in Kimberley. Knights ended up posting 176 despite starting sedately after being 37 for 2 at the end of the powerplay. That is when Kruger and van Biljon added 86 for the third wicket in less than nine overs, with van Biljon cracking 42 off 25 balls, including three fours and sixes each. Behardien’s finishing touches then propelled Knights, before Migael Pretorius and Alfred Mothoa struck with the ball early. Although Sarel Erwee and Khaya Zondo put on 51 stand to stage a brief recovery, Dolphins were eventually left with 63 to get in the last five overs. Bryce Parsons and Jason Smith put up a fight for Dolphins, with their late assault once threatening to eclipse Knights’ score, before they eventually fell short by seven runs.Semi-final 1: Dolphins beat Titans by four wickets
Ottniel Baartman put Dolphins in the driving seat by taking two wickets in his second over which, along with Ruan de Swart and Odirile Modimokoane’s early strikes, left Titans at 38 for 4 after seven overs. Gihahn Cloete’s 62, and contributions from Ferreira and Corbin Bosch, who scored 26 and 21, respectively, pushed Titans to a reasonable total. Baartman finished with 4 for 18, as Titans were bowled out for 138. Dolphins were in some trouble on 33 for 2, but Erwee’s 33 steadied them before Zondo took control. They needed 40 runs in the last five overs and 18 in the last two. Zondo scored 15 of the 16 runs they got in the penultimate over to put the victory beyond doubt and finished unbeaten on 58 off 45 balls.Semi-final 2: Knights vs North West: No result
North West will feel aggrieved not to have advanced from the semi-final after having the Knights at 127 for 7, and being well on track to chase the target. They were 42 without loss in the third over when rain washed out the match. As a result, Knights advanced on a higher net run rate, despite North West being in control of the game. Eldred Hawken took 3 for 37 and Senuran Muthusamy bagged 2 for 12, as only two of Knights’ batters, Pite van Biljon and Gerald Coetzee, scored more than 15, and their usually strong line-up stuttered. North West’s openers Wesley Marshall and Eben Botha hit seven fours and a six in the 15 balls they faced, but heavy showers in Kimberley put Knights into the final.File photo: Rilee Rossouw hit a century to become the competition’s highest run-scorer•Getty Images

Quarter-final 1: Titans beat South Western Districts by 54 runs
The only Division 2 team to qualify from the group stage, South Western Districts (SWD) ended their run in the last eight with the biggest margin of defeat in the knockouts. Things started well for SWD, who had Titans 44 for 2 at the end of the powerplay. However, a 33-ball 48 from Theunis de Bruyn, two half-century stands for the fifth and the sixth wicket, and a 29-ball 55 from Donavon Ferreira took Titans to 192. SWD’s 82-run opening stand put them on track to pull off a coup, but they lost all ten wickets for 56 runs to tumble to 138 all out inside 18 overs. Wickets were shared between the Titans’ attack, with captain Aaron Phangiso earning the best returns of 2 for 18.Quarter-final 2: Knights beat Western Province by four runs
Rossouw continued his remarkable run in the competition and became the highest run-scorer of the season with a century to add to his two fifties, as he propelled Knights to 223 for 3 against Western Province. He shared a 130-run third-wicket partnership with Behardien, a stand which came off just 64 balls, with Behardien scoring 57. None of the Cape attack conceded at less than nine runs an over. Western Province looked out of contention on 105 for 5 in the 12th over, but their captain Wayne Parnell had other ideas. He smashed remarkable a 29-ball 80 at a strike rate of 275.66 and kept them in the hunt until the final over, which they entered on 195 for 7. In the end, Migael Pretorius conceded 24 runs off the last over, including a no-ball six, but Western Province still fell short by four runs.File photo: Janneman Malan added 108 for the opening wicket with his brother Pieter•AFP/Getty Images

Quarter-final 3: Dolphins beat Warriors by six wickets
Daryn Dupavillon had Warriors at 8 for 3 in the third over, before Diego Rosier and Sinethemba Qeshile put on 42 to save their line-up’s blushes. Dupavillon finished with 4 for 18 as Warriors ended on 127 for 9. When they had Dolphins on 33 or 4 after seven overs, it looked like Warriors may have scored enough; but Keegan Petersen built diligently before Jason Smith took it on himself to see Dolphins over the line. They needed 34 runs off the last five overs, and Smith scored 20 of them to finish unbeaten on 60 off 41 balls to complete the chase with four balls to spare.Quarter-final 4: North West beat Boland by three runs
The best quarter-final was saved for last when North West beat Boland by three runs in a thriller. North West’s innings started shakily when they were reduced to 45 for 4 in the seventh over, before Eben Both and Lesego Senokwane put on 59 for the fifth wicket to take them over 100. Duan Jansen’s 21-ball 27 helped set Boland a target of 158, which they should have easily reached after the Malan brothers, Janneman and Pieter, had an opening stand worth 108 in less than 13 overs. But that is when they collapsed, losing 6 for 44 in the next 41 balls: two each to Jansen and Caleb Seleka, one to Lwandiswa Zuma and another to a run-out. Boland needed four off the last ball, but Janneman could only find a single.
