Rangers should weigh up a move for the dwindling Mo Diame

Rangers have blown the title race wide open in the Scottish Premiership with a comprehensive victory over Hearts last weekend.

The Gers welcome the league leaders to Ibrox with their opponents unbeaten in 13 games and found themselves three goals to the good after just 32 minutes. Ryan Kent, Alfredo Morelos and Scott Arfield all found the back of the net to give Steven Gerrard’s men an unassailable lead. Jimmy Dunne pulled one back late on, but his goal was rendered useless thanks to Rangers’ blistering first-half performance.

The result leaves Gerrard’s side just five points behind Hearts at the top of the table and two behind arch-rivals Celtic. Rangers have won all four of their fixtures at home this season and will hope to continue their Europa League run against Rapid Vienna following the international break. As well as fixture preparation, the former England captain should also be monitoring potential January recruits.

One man he should shortlist is Newcastle United powerhouse – Mohamed Diame. Valued at £4.5m by Transfermarkt, the Senegal international has been a key player for the Magpies since joining from Hull City back in 2016. He made 31 appearances in the Premier League last season and has featured in all eight fixtures under Rafael Benitez so far this season.

Despite his increasing importance to the first-team, Diame has less than one year remaining on his contract at St. James Park and could be available at a cut-price in January if Newcastle are unwilling to lose him on a free in the summer. The 31-year-old could add some steel to the Rangers midfield, averaging an incredible 3.9 tackles per game so far this season – more than any other Rangers player. Diame is also a huge threat in the air, winning 1.8 aerial duels per game this season (WhoScored).

Adding the Senegalese powerhouse to his roster in January could give Gerrard a welcome boost in the New Year.

Rangers fans, thoughts?

Recent reports could prompt Liverpool into move to re-sign Raheem Sterling

According to a recent report from The Daily Mirror, Raheem Sterling’s Manchester City future is far from certain amid a contract ‘stalemate’. The 23-year-old was outstanding for Pep Guardiola’s men last season in netting 23 goals and laying on 17 assists in all competitions, 18 goals and 15 assists of which coming in the Premier League as the Citizens stormed to the title in accumulating 100 points from their 38 matches.

Yet City are reportedly willing to sell the £81 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt) next summer if he does not agree a new deal, and these reports could prompt Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool into an audacious move to re-sign the attacker.

The Breakdown

Ultimately, the 23-year-old left Anfield back in 2015 after coming up through the ranks and beginning his senior career on Merseyside, with the England international scoring 23 goals and laying on 25 assists in 129 games for the Reds.

Yet his move to City was met with widespread negativity given the way it was seemingly handled, but one cannot deny that it was a decision that has advanced Sterling’s footballing career given he has since gone on to win the Premier League under Guardiola, and produced the best season of his career last time round.

And while it is unlikely to be a popular move among Liverpool fans, their side should seek to lure Sterling back to Anfield, as doing so would provide them with greater depth and competition in the forward ranks.

The lethal front three of Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane, and Mohamed Salah netted a staggering 91 goals between them in all competitions last term to underline their status as one of the best attacking forces in Europe, yet the strength in depth outside of the trio is very much lacking.

And that’s because Danny Ings and Dominic Solanke are the first in line when it comes to replacing any of the aforementioned trio, and while Xherdan Shaqiri’s arrival from Stoke City will go some way to giving Klopp another option, he’s not at the same level as messrs Firmino, Mane, and Salah – Sterling is though.

The 23-year-old scored 18 goals in the Premier League last season to help City comfortably win the title, but his tally of 15 assists also underlines that not only does he have the goal-scoring in him, but he’s also got the creativity to contribute even when not scoring, which has become a requirement of the modern-day winger.

Yet with his City future somewhat uncertain, Liverpool could seek to make an audacious move to lure the England international back to Anfield.

Liverpool fans… what do you think? Let us know!

In Focus: West Ham United’s firm stance on Lanzini can send a message

West Ham United manager Slaven Bilic has insisted that Manuel Lanzini is “happy” at the club and is expected to stay, reports the club’s official website.

What’s the word?

The Argentine quickly emerged as a transfer target for Liverpool when it became clear that Philippe Coutinho was wanted by Barcelona.

As it stands with less than two weeks left to go until the window closes, the Brazilian remains a Liverpool player.

The club released a statement last week insisting that the 25-year-old will not be sold, despite the player submitting a transfer request.

This stance, of course, helps West Ham if Liverpool have indeed placed Lanzini on their list of replacements, as reported by the Daily Star.

Hammers manager Slaven Bilic has reiterated that the 24-year-old is content with life at the London Stadium and is expected to be at the club for the rest of the season.

“He knows if he has a good season at West Ham, he has the chance to improve, to have a better contract with West Ham and to play for Argentina. He is very happy here.

“I am sure he is going to stay with us. He knows that he is wanted. He was voted the Players’ Player of the Year, which is a really good thing. It makes you feel really wanted at a place. He likes it here.”

West Ham must not be swayed

If a big club like Liverpool come calling, it would be understandable if Lanzini’s head was turned, particularly as he would have the opportunity to fill Coutinho’s role.

Keeping hold of the midfielder would be a major victory for the Hammers, who were forced into selling their best player in January.

The East London outfit went through some turmoil when Dimitri Payet shockingly refused to play for the club again.

The Frenchman instigated a move back to Marseille, and he eventually got his wish.

There does not seem to be any indication that this situation would repeat itself with Lanzini, but losing a key player would reflect negatively on the club’s image and reputation.

Three key battles: Stoke vs. Everton

Premier League fans are being treated to an absolute feast of football this week, with two rounds of action due before Monday comes around.

Last night saw Liverpool host Chelsea in a firey title clash and although Manchester City and Manchester United may grab the headlines tonight, we at FootballFanCast have a feeling Stoke vs. Everton will provide a little more bang for our buck.

After all, there’s so little to choose between these sides ahead of kick-off. Before Tuesday night’s run of fixtures, they were separated by just two places in the Premier League table, and perhaps most tellingly of all, the last six meetings between the Potters and the Toffees have been split exactly down the middle with three wins apiece.

With that in mind, tonight’s encounter under the Bet365 Stadium floodlights looks set to come down to which side dominates the key individual battles. We take a look at THREE that could decide the outcome.

Romelu Lukaku vs. Ryan Shawcross

After conceding four goals to Liverpool and Chelsea in consecutive fixtures at the end of December, Stoke’s defence has tightened up in recent weeks, keeping clean sheets against Watford and Wolves whilst conceding only one apiece during the win over Sunderland and draw with Manchester United.

But Everton striker Romelu Lukaku has enjoyed a similar revival in 2017; after enduring a dry spell of three goals in ten appearances across all competitions, the Belgian battering ram has netted three in four outings – and bagged one assist – since the turn of the year.

Vital to stopping the 6ft. 3″ striker will be Stoke skipper Ryan Shawcross, perhaps not performing to the same levels he was a few years ago but nonetheless a solid Premier League centre-back and a key member of the Potters defence. He’s got the strength, height and aggression to match Lukaku’s, but won’t want to find himself in a footrace with the 23-year-old.

Marco Arnautovic vs. Seamus Coleman

It’s not been a stellar season for Marko Arnautovic, especially when compared to his twelve-goal haul during the 2016/17 campaign. Nonetheless, we all know how talented the Austrian attacker is and there has been evidence of an uplift in form recently, performing well against Watford before grabbing a brace in the win over Sunderland.

His battle with Everton right-back Seamus Coleman could be a pivotal one this evening. Despite lining up at the back, the Irishman is the Toffees’ second top scorer this term with four goals, whilst Arnautovic incidentally holds that title for the Potters – albeit shared with three of his team-mates.

With that in mind, Coleman and Arnautovic face a similar challenge; aiding their teams’ attacking efforts as much as possible, whilst making sure the other doesn’t have a similar or greater impact on the match. It’s a real balance of responsibilities and the duo’s shared mix of pace and power adds another exciting dynamic to this potentially result-defining battle.

Ross Barkley vs. Joe Allen

Albeit operating in slightly different systems and slightly different positions, Joe Allen and Ross Barkley essentially have the same role in their respective engine rooms – offering box-to-box dynamism whilst providing that killer pass to the front line.

Allen’s struggled to maintain an early-season flurry that saw him clinch three goals and two assists in five outings but has unquestionably proved his quality since leaving Liverpool for the Bet365 Stadium in the summer. Even amid the absence of such prominent output, yet to score or assist in 2017, he remains Mark Hughes’ preferred choice at No.10.

Barkley, meanwhile, has been asked to operate slightly deeper as part of a midfield three in Ronald Koeman’s 3-5-2, yet it appears to be getting the best out of him offensively. Barkley’s form has notably improved since the start of December, notching up three assists and one goal in his last eight appearances.

Ultimately, this battle will come down to which British talent can do the most for their side going forward, whilst putting in a shift off the ball. Both are creative and gifted technicians – now it’s a question of who can deliver on Wednesday night.

Three things we learnt from Bournemouth’s stunning victory over Man United

Hands up if you saw that one coming? Not many arms in the air, we reckon. Bournemouth thoroughly deserved their second staggering win in just one week as they beat Manchester United 2-1 to follow their 1-0 at Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge last Saturday.

There were some extenuating circumstances for the Red Devils who were hit with injuries, but that should take nothing away from the manner in which Eddie Howe’s men went about their business on the south coast.

The three points could be pivotal for the Cherries come the end of the season, while missing out on the haul might have repercussions for LVG, whose spot in the top four is currently under threat from the likes of Spurs.

There’s plenty to talk about after an enthralling 90 minutes at the Vitality Stadium, and here are THREE major discussion points…

Louis van Gaal is not the man for the job

We’re not saying sack Van Gaal now, but it’s becoming pretty clear that the Dutchman is not really bringing the sort of football or results to the table demanded by fans of the club. Okay, he dragged his side into the top four last season, but an unattractive approach, Champions League elimination and some questionable results have raised eyebrows.

Pep Guardiola may well be available at the end of the season, while Carlo Ancelotti is out of work now… Down the road at Liverpool Jurgen Klopp’s appointment in place of an unpopular manager has brought a feel-good factor.

Real hope for Bournemouth

What a seven days! Bournemouth were a side highlighted by all in the relegation battle prior to kick-off at Chelsea a week ago, but since then Eddie Howe’s men have taken six points from six, following a memorable win at Stamford Bridge with a home beating of Manchester United.

Injuries to key men such as Callum Wilson mean that things are still tough for the Cherries, but a great deal of belief can be taken from two momentous results against teams that were mentioned as title contenders ahead of 2015/16.

Man United can’t really counted among the title favourites…

https://vine.co/v/iZqhm3uYYx3/embed/simple

Manchester United are a bit of an odd side this season. The football being played is less than inspiring, but results have been pretty positive on the whole. However, a loss at promoted Bournemouth is pretty unforgivable in the context of the criticism being aimed at Louis van Gaal, especially when points are valuable with other rivals slipping on a weekly basis.

Title contenders? Not based on this result, while a squad thin enough to leave LVG with a back four of Paddy McNair, Daley Blind, Guillermo Varela and Cameron Borthwick-Jackson despite having spent over £250m is an issue…

Harry Maguire makes Man Utd transfer admission ahead of January window as former Red Devils captain won’t ‘play once a month’

Harry Maguire has suggested that he could leave Manchester United in January, with the out-of-favour defender not prepared to “play once a month”.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The England international centre-half has slipped down the pecking order at Old Trafford, with the club captaincy being taken off him in the process. Maguire has taken in just 116 minutes of Premier League football this season, with Erik ten Hag not convinced by what the 30-year-old has to offer.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Maguire saw a transfer speculated on over the summer and admits that he may have to seek a move in the next window. He has said while away on England duty: “I am not going to sit here all my life and play once a month and if it carries on, I am sure myself and the club will sit down and have a chat. I want to play minutes, I want to play football.”

  • WHAT THEY SAID

While being overlooked by Ten Hag on a regular basis, Maguire claims his record under the Dutch coach is deserving of more opportunities. He added: “If you look back on my last 15-20 starts for club and country, I would be happy to sit here and say I’m really happy with my performances. My record under this manager (Ten Hag) speaks for itself. I haven’t started as many games as I would like but my win percentage when I’ve played is ridiculously high. Of course there are times when I could do more and times when I could improve and help the team. I can only do what I’ve been doing when I’ve come into the team … bringing positive performances. But I’m just wanting to help the team, I’m wanting to help the team get out of this position we’re in at the moment.”

    WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

United have made an inconsistent start to the 2023-24 campaign as a collective, with a 12-point haul from eight games leaving them 10th in the Premier League table. The Red Devils have also suffered back-to-back defeats against Bayern Munich and Galatasaray in the Champions League.

'Erling Haaland eats like a bear!' – Cow hearts, 'magic potion' milk and the diet and lifestyle secrets fuelling Man City's goal machine

As the Norwegian looks to fire City to Champions League glory against Inter, GOAL takes a look at his quest for physical perfection

Hundreds of cars line the car park at Manchester City's training ground and one sticks out in particular – a Rolls Royce. It belongs to Erling Haaland. There is nothing unusual about top footballers owning luxury cars, but Haaland's motor is different to most – according to legend, it contains a cooking stove.

Even when he is on the move, Haaland wants to be able to eat top-quality food. His love for cooking was plain to see when, during City's Premier League title celebrations last month at a high-end restaurant in the centre of Manchester, the striker, wearing silk pyjamas, went into the kitchen to grill his own steaks, leaving the chefs with their jaws on the floor.

Haaland has been described as a freak of nature, but while he is blessed with the ideal genetics – a footballer father and a heptathlete mother – his phenomenal physical condition is not down to chance.

From his diet to his sleep pattern through to his post-match massage routine, Haaland's daily regime is meticulously planned and a key reason why he has scored a stunning 52 goals this season in 52 games, firing City to the Premier League title, the FA Cup and the Champions League final.

Getty'He eats like a bear'

Haaland has experienced a huge growth spurt in recent years, fuelled by his insatiable eating habits. The striker says he consumes around 6,000 calories a day (adult men are supposed to consume around 2,500) and eating is a huge part of his life.

Norway team-mate Josh King said he had never seen anyone consume as much food as Haaland, remarking: "He just eats like a bear". And there is something animalistic about the striker's eating habits. While vegan diets have been become common among modern footballers, Haaland is an unashamed lover of meat.

That might have something to do with growing up in a rural community in Bryne, Norway, where he would help out his grandfather, a potato and pig farmer. But the type of meat he eats is unusual. As well as liking steak, Haaland eats cow's hearts and livers. Even Dwayne Johnson, better known as The Rock, expressed surprise when he learned of Haaland's diet.

The striker explained his eating habits in the documentary . "Eating quality food that is as local as possible is the most important," he said. "People say meat is bad for you, but which? The meat you get at McDonald's, or the local cow eating grass right there?"

AdvertisementGetty ImagesNo booze – but plenty of filtered water

Haaland also indulges in pasta, a former favourite dish of footballers but which has fallen out of fashion in recent times. His father, Alfie, cooks him lasagne the day before each home game, which helped him score back-to-back hat-tricks against Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest. And he is a regular at Italian eateries in Manchester, with one restaurant opening specially for him so he can eat in private, away from the public glare.

While a fair few City players indulge in nightlife – Guardiola remarked that his side "drunk all the alcohol in Manchester" after winning the title – Haaland is not known for drinking much booze.

"He is the best professional I have ever seen" said Jack Grealish of the Norwegian. "His mindset is something you won't see again. He does everything. Recovers; in the gym; 10 hours of treatment a day; ice baths; diet. That's why he is what he is. But I swear, I couldn't be like that!

"We have a great friendship, but he will point at me after a game and say: 'Hey. Don't you go out tonight partying'. I just tell him to shut up and go and sit in his ice bath."

But Haaland still takes a big interest in what he drinks. He insists on drinking filtered water, while also drinking kale-infused milk, calling it his "magic potion".

Getty Taking sleep seriously

As well as taking his diet seriously, Haaland is passionate about getting a good night's sleep, calling it "perhaps the most important thing in life". Cristiano Ronaldo, for example, has taken a huge interest in sleep patterns, talking of the benefits of taking regular naps. Haaland is more traditional, preferring to get to sleep by 10.30pm and turning off his technological devices long before he climbs into bed. But he also uses modern technology to help him get the rest he needs.

He puts on orange, blue-light glasses before going to bed which hide natural light, and wears an Oura ring on his finger to measure the quality of his sleep and his heart rate.

GettyLate-night massages to stay injury-free

Sleep and diet are crucial to any elite player's performance, but injury can derail the most promising of seasons and even wreck a career. Haaland had a checkered injury history before arriving at City, missing 16 matches for Borussia Dortmund last season, mostly with muscle injuries.

But he and the club have worked hard to keep him fit and relatively injury-free. Guardiola has talked openly about the club's concerns about his injury history and credited the medical staff and physios for keeping him in shape.

Haaland has been unavailable for only three games this season, recovering quickly from each setback. The club asked sports therapist Mario Pafundi to accompany him on international duty with Norway to ensure he kept the same routine.

Haaland also takes his own initiative to stay injury-free. After the Champions League quarter-final first leg victory against Bayern Munich, he headed straight to the training ground – conveniently located opposite the road from the Etihad Stadium – for an hour-long massage.
