Four youngsters tipped to leave Leeds

Four youngsters are expected to leave Leeds United in the summer transfer window as they look to push on elsewhere in their careers.

The Lowdown: Leeds look to go up a gear

Marcelo Bielsa’s side secured an impressive ninth-place finish back in the Premier League in 2020/21, standing out as a hugely entertaining team in scoring 62 goals and conceding 54.

Leeds must now push on and look to do even better next season, which may require top-quality new signings being brought into Elland Road.

For the young players at the club, their chances of playing time could become more unlikely if there is a summer influx, and a fresh update has emerged regarding four academy talents.

The Latest: Quartet on the move?

According to Football Insider, Robbie Gotts, Niall Huggins, Jordan Stevens and Bryce Hosannah could all move on this summer.

Leeds are thought to be ‘keen’ on sealing permanent exits for the quartet prior to the September 1 cutoff at the end of the transfer window.

The Verdict: Makes perfect sense

Football at the top level is ruthless, and while it is sad to see talented youngsters being moved on, it may be best for all parties at Leeds.

The Whites have reached a stage where they need readymade top-level players in order to compete in the Premier League, and it is hard to see academy prospects making a real difference to Bielsa’s first team.

If they do leave, Gotts, Huggins, Stevens and Hosannah will all hopefully flourish elsewhere and ultimately prove to Leeds that they were wrong to sell them.

In other news, one club have demanded €35m for a rumoured Leeds target’s services. Find out who it is here.

Serie A expert: Romero & Maguire could work at Manchester United

A centre-back partnership of Harry Maguire and Cristian Romero at Manchester United could be brilliant, says Forza Italian Football’s editor-in-chief Conor Clancy.

Romero, 23, is currently being linked with a move to Manchester United, with Calciomercato (via The Sun) reporting that the Red Devils are ready to do battle with Liverpool for the Atalanta defender.

Maguire has been a mainstay in United’s defence since joining the club back in 2019; however, some feel that the Englishman and Victor Lindelof do not work as a centre-half pairing.

Considering that, Clancy thinks a move for Romero this summer would make sense, suggesting he could work well alongside Maguire.

“I think they could [be a partnership],” the Italian football expert said. “I think for 35 games a season, they’d be brilliant.”

Clancy, however, did have a word of caution. He added: “But they might make a few odd decisions because they probably have the same flaws in that sometimes they do things and you just think, ‘What? Why did that happen?’ ”

Whatever the case, United fans will surely be pleased to see Ole Gunnar Solskjaer trying to improve both the team’s defence and attack after finishing behind rivals Manchester City in the title race.

The Red Devils are, of course, also in for Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho, so this is possibly shaping up to be a good transfer window for the club.

Waugh recently underwentminor foot surgery as well.”Apparently it all went pretty well and I should be on these things[crutches] for a week and then hopefully back in full training in amonth,” Ponting said at Sydney airport.Ponting, who was married on Saturday, said there was more disruption tohis honeymoon than his cricket.“All it means is the honeymoon is put back about a week,” he said.”It had to be done, I’d had pain for about 12 months and had some X-raysin early January that identified a stress fracture.”Ponting said the injury didn’t hamper him when batting but caused himsome pain when fielding. His initial approach was to rest the injury after the South African tourbut it failed to respond.”I was running out of time and I really had to get it done now.”With two months until Australia was scheduled to play one-dayers and aTest series against Pakistan, Ponting admitted he was unsure where thematches would be played. He said his preference was for Australia to host the tour, which won’tbe played in Pakistan due to security concerns.”There’s been a lot of things spoken and a lot of possibilities …Morocco, Sharjah.”It’d be nice to play in Australia but the Pakistanis weren’t all thatkeen on that because they thought it was too much of an advantage to usplaying in Australia.”All that we know is that we will be playing some sort of cricket at thetime of the [scheduled] Pakistan tour, we just don’t know where it’sgoing to be.”

West Brom handed boost over Grant

West Bromwich Albion have been handed a boost to their chances of keeping Karlan Grant at The Hawthorns this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by The Athletic, who claim that the 23-year-old centre-forward has no intention of leaving the Baggies in the upcoming transfer window, despite their relegation from the Premier League.

Fans will be buzzing

While it is undeniable that Grant has not quite lived up to the £15m fee West Brom had to pay Huddersfield Town to secure his services last October, the news that the former England U18 international is happy to remain at The Hawthorns beyond the summer should have fans of the club buzzing.

Indeed, while the £8.1m-rated man’s performances in the Premier League left a lot to be desired, with the forward scoring just one goal over 21 appearances in the top flight last term, his form for the Terriers in the campaign prior would seem to bode extremely well for the Baggies ahead of next season.

In the 2019/20 Championship campaign, Grant bagged 19 goals, provided four assists and created six big chances over his 43 league appearances, as well as taking an average of 2.6 shots and making 1.2 key passes per game, with these returns seeing the £30k-per-week striker earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.87.

As such, if the man Danny Cowley dubbed a “ruthless” finisher can refind this form for West Brom next season, it would appear to massively increase the Baggies’ chances of securing an immediate return to the Premier League.

So, while Grant may have taken a little while to get used to life in the top flight of English football, the 23-year-old could be finally set to flourish in a West Brom shirt next season – an outcome that would undoubtedly delight West Brom fans, as well as the club themselves.

If West Brom want to secure an immediate promotion back to the top flight, they will need somebody to step up and score plenty of goals in the Championship. In Grant, they have a player with a track record of doing exactly that, it’ll be a huge boost if he stays at the club.

Gerrard dealt Mendes Gomes transfer blow

Rangers’ hopes of signing Carlos Mendes Gomes this summer have taken a blow after Morecambe earned promotion to League One on Bank Holiday Monday, which will surely decrease the chances of him joining up with Steven Gerrard at Ibrox ahead of next season.

The Light Blues have been linked with a move for the Spanish winger ahead of the summer after his impressive performances in League Two for the Lancashire side, although a number of English Championship clubs were also said to be interested.

It had initially seemed as if he would be able to join Rangers on a free transfer as his contract is set to expire in the summer, but Morecambe boss Derek Adams confirmed that the club holds an option to extend his contract by another year, which they will surely exercise.

Mendes Gomes was the hero for the Shrimps once again on Monday as his penalty in extra time earned them a 1-0 win against Newport County and ensured that they would be promoted to the third tier of English football for the first time in their history.

This took his tally for the season to 16, whilst he also managed five assists, so he was clearly a key factor in Morecambe’s promotion and one of the standout performers in League Two this season.

Now that they have been promoted, and his contract will likely be extended by another year, it seems unlikely that Mendes Gomes will leave the Mazuma Stadium this summer unless an interested club makes an offer that Morecambe simply cannot refuse.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-rangers-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Rangers transfer rumours and news!”]

It is a shame for Rangers that he seemingly won’t be making the move to Ibrox, as his performances this season have been superb, and he could’ve been an excellent addition to Gerrard’s squad ahead of their return to Champions League football next season.

Given that the “fantastic” Mendes Gomes predominantly features from the left as a right-footed winger who contributes effectively in the final third, he could’ve been the man to step up at Ibrox should Ryan Kent depart this summer.

The former Liverpool winger has unsurprisingly once again been linked with a move to Leeds United after his superb performances in the Premiership, and the prospect of Premier League football might be enough to tempt him away from Ibrox.

Unfortunately, if the 24-year-old does move on, then it seems that Gerrard and Ross Wilson will have to turn their attentions away from Mendes Gomes as his potential replacement.

And, in other news… Rangers handed huge boost with “outstanding” 23 G/A dynamo, Wilson must deliver

Pundit urges Leeds to sign Andrew Ayew from Swansea - Exclusive

Carlton Palmer believes that it could be worth Leeds exploring the possibility of signing free agent Andre Ayew this summer.

Ayew has been one of the standout strikers in the Championship in recent years, scoring 33 league goals across the last two seasons to help Swansea qualify for the play-offs on both occasions.

However, following their recent play-off final defeat to Brentford, the Ghanaian’s departure was confirmed, meaning he’s available to sign for nothing having run his contract down in South Wales.

Celtic are reportedly keening a close eye on the 31-year-old, but Leeds could hold an advantage due to the fact Ayew has previously played under and scored goals under Marcelo Bielsa during their one season together at Marseille in 2014-15.

Leeds already have two strikers in their ranks in Patrick Bamford and Rodrigo, but Palmer thinks that signing a proven goalscorer like Ayew on a free would be impressive business.

He told The Transfer Tavern:

“Swansea have only let him go because they didn’t get promoted and he’s their highest-paid player.

“17 goals in the Championship, 16 goals the season before stands to reason that he will go up and score goals in the Premier League. If he weighs in with 10 or 12 goals for you, and you take him on a free, that could be some good business.”

Webber must sanction Norwich move for Ajer

Daniel Farke’s Norwich City side are interested in a deal to bring Kristoffer Ajer to Carrow Road this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to The Sun, who claim that Farke wants to add a centre-back to his squad ahead of the Canaries’ Premier League campaign next season, with the new addition acting as competition for both Ben Gibson and Grant Hanley.

One player currently on his radar is reported to be Celtic’s Ajer, with Stuart Webber thought to have been personally scouting the 23-year-old in recent weeks.

AC Milan and Newcastle United are also believed to be keen on a move for the defender, for whom an offer of around £8 million should be enough to convince Celtic to sell.

Webber must move

While Celtic have had something of a campaign to forget this season, Ajer has been one of the few bright sparks at Parkhead.

Over his 32 Scottish Premiership appearances so far this term, the 21-capped Norway international has helped his side keep 15 clean sheets, as well as making an average of 1.4 interceptions, 1.3 tackles and 3.4 clearances per game, culminating in an impressive average SofaScore match rating of 7.11.

The £14,000-per-week defender, who is comfortable operating from the middle or right-hand side of defence, has also demonstrated his creativity throughout the season, registering two assists, as well as making an average of 0.6 key passes per league fixture.

And, at just 23-years-old, there is still plenty of time for Ajer to develop as a footballer, although it would appear as if the defender has already proven his ability during his time at Celtic, with his centre-back partner, Christopher Jullien, dubbing him a “unique talent”, while Alex McLeish claimed the 6ft 5 titan is “influential” within his current team.

As such, with Farke currently only having the senior options of Gibson, Hanley and Christoph Zimmermann at centre-back, it would very much seem that greater depth is needed in the position ahead of the Canaries’ Premier League jaunt, with Ajer being an addition who Webber simply must pull out all the stops to secure.
