Fisher, Atkinson give Surrey the edge in de facto season showdown

Fast bowlers confirm readiness for roles in Australia this winter as champions showcase strength in depth

Vithushan Ehantharajah15-Sep-2025, are more amenable to a reduction, though their members seem minded to disagree. The folly of it all is that this final also serves as a reminder of the wrangle for sporting integrity. This is the first time Surrey and Nottinghamshire have met this season, the pitfall of squaring a 10-team top division into 14 fixtures. Should they both end the season in the top-two spots, it would be the fourth season in a row that county champions and runners-up have squared up just the once.It is a quirk of circumstance given the previous three runners-up have all been different (Lancashire 2022, Essex 2023, Hampshire 2024). And a reflection of Surrey’s dominance and robust squad depth that they’ve prevailed in each of those previous seasons – traits which are no less apparent coming into the final eight days of this summer.Gus Atkinson, now England’s more than Surrey’s, was typically incisive for his 4 for 41. He is likely to be utilised as a load-bearing bowler for the winter’s Ashes, and got the ball rolling with the early removal of Nottinghamshire skipper Haseeb Hameed. But it was Matthew Fisher, brought in to cover for Atkinson’s international duties (and, as it turned out, absences through injury) who ended up leading the line with 5 for 61, his first five-wicket haul for Surrey after four previous such hauls for Yorkshire.Gus Atkinson made the breakthrough in the morning session•Getty Images for Surrey CCCFisher’s move down from Headingley to south London was a familiar story – a player hoping a new challenge will reignite a career that had looks to have struck a ceiling. By and large, it has, even if the numbers do not quite tell that story. It took nine innings for Fisher to reach double-figures for his new club, at the end of June, despite stitching together some good spells in that period. His efforts spoke of the promise that had brought about his one and only Test cap, on an unforgiving Bridgetown pitch and in even more unforgiving circumstances, given that he featured on that trip as a (premature) replacement for Stuart Broad and James Anderson. Now that that pair have finally left the scene, the likes of Atkinson and Nottinghamshire quick Josh Tongue have shunted Fisher down the pecking order, to the extent his winter remains free. Could a Lions spot on this winter’s tour of Australia be in the offing? As England look for insurance with their quicks, and with Brendon McCullum confirming that that trip will play a key back-up role for the Ashes, it would make a lot of sense.Fisher was undoubtedly Surrey’s best with the Kookaburra ball – more so than South Australian Dan Worrall who was reared on them – and has added consistency and endurance to his naturally hard length and knack of challenging both edges of the bat.He was originally introduced after 20 overs as the fifth bowler used, by which point Nottinghamshire had made it to 51 for 1. After a five-over spell from the Vauxhall End, he switched to the Micky Stewart Pavillion End and earned a much-needed breakthrough ten balls later.Profitting from extra juice from that end, Fisher went wide on the crease from around the wicket, angling into Freddie McCann then leaving him, clipping the edge on the way. A second leftie was sent back soon after when Ben Slater, composed for his 50 from 95 deliveries, fell victim to a better version of the McCann delivery; fuller, straighter, leaving Slater powerless while doing the needful of protecting his off stump just in case. Those dismissals were the first two of the final eight to fall for just 142, but the collapse felt avoidable. Joe Clarke had played engagingly for 29 before needlessly chasing a wide delivery from Atkinson with an angled bat. Brett Hutton’s unbeaten 30, while motivated by an imminent end to Nottinghamshire’s first innings, demonstrated that the surface still rewarded application, having last been used against Somerset at the end of April.South African keeper-batter Kyle Verreynne was slowly compiling before Fisher, tighter to the stumps, nipped one into middle from an initial line outside off, for a plumb lbw. Though he did receive a bit of tap as Nottinghamshire swung from the hip in pursuit of bonus points – Hutton deposited him over square leg for the innings’ only six – rewards duly came. Tongue’s booming drive brought a fifth catch for Ben Foakes, before Pennington’s wild hack left his front shin unguarded for a second leg-before.Fisher barely celebrated, jarring his right knee as he turned sharply to appeal to the umpire. He soon shook that off, leading the team back into the dressing room, ball aloft. Whatever is to come in the County Championship, both this season and next, Fisher’s present and immediate future looks far more assured.

Asia Cup 2025 in UAE starting September 9; India vs Pakistan on September 14

India and Pakistan are pitted against each other in Group A at the 2025 men’s Asia Cup, set to be held in the UAE from September 9 to September 28. Their group-stage meeting will be on September 14 in Dubai*, with two more potential games between them should both reach the final. Dubai, where the final will also be played, will host 11 games while Abu Dhabi will host eight fixtures.Last week, the dates for the 17th edition of the tournament were announced by Asian Cricket Council (ACC) president and PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi. Keeping in mind the T20 World Cup, the tournament will be played in the T20I format and, for the very first time, will feature eight teams, a bump of two from the previous edition.

Key group-stage matches

Ban v SL, Sept 13, Abu Dhabi
Ind v Pak, Sept 14, Dubai
Ban v Afg, Sept 16, Abu Dhabi
SL vs Afg, Sept 18, Abu Dhabi

Apart from India and Pakistan, Group A includes Oman and hosts UAE. Group B has Afghanistan and Hong Kong, who kickstart the tournament in Abu Dhabi on September 9, alongside Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. The top two teams from each group will move on to another four-team group for the second stage, with the top two teams of that group proceeding to the final on September 28.The venue and dates for the tournament were finalised at the ACC’s annual general meeting in Dhaka last Thursday, where the Asia Cup was one of the key points on the members’ agenda. The fate of the tournament had briefly been thrown into uncertainty following the India-Pakistan military skirmish in May. After the AGM in Dhaka, Naqvi had addressed a press conference about the imminent notification of the Asia Cup dates, though he had stopped short of confirming specific details at the time. The India-Pakistan fixture is, by far, the most financially lucrative fixture in the Asia Cup. The format of the tournament and the placement in the same group make at least two India-Pakistan matches likely, the second on September 21 – also in Dubai – if it happens. It also leaves open the possibility of a third meeting in the final in Dubai on September 28. There has, however, never been an India-Pakistan final in the Asia Cup.India are the official hosts of the tournament, but, after an agreement between the BCCI and the PCB earlier this year, tournaments held in India or Pakistan will see a neutral venue provided for the other side for a three-year period. The agreement came about ahead of the Champions Trophy held in Pakistan earlier this year. India played all their games, including the one against hosts Pakistan, in Dubai. The final, which India qualified for and won, was also held in Dubai.India are the defending champions, having beaten Sri Lanka in the final of the previous edition in 2023. Sri Lanka won the previous T20I edition, beating Pakistan in the final in 2022.*1700 GMT, Aug 2: The news story was updated after the ACC released the detailed schedule

Rounding the Bases: MLB Straight Up Picks for Every Game Today (Seth Lugo's Cy Young Case Takes Center Stage)

All Major League Baseball teams are in action on Tuesday, making for a high volume day.

The game that has my attention is the AL Central battle between the Royals and Guardians with Kansas City sending out potential American League Cy Young contender Seth Lugo in hopes of closing the gap in the division.

Keep reading for more on that game as well as the 14 other games on the Major League Baseball slate!

Odds courtesy of FanDuel Sportsbook

Rays vs. Marlins Prediction and Pick

Pick: Marlins (+100)

Jesus Luzardo continues to thrive for the Marlins despite the team failing to compete this season. He draws a favorable matchup against the Rays, who are bottom 10 in the big leagues in terms of OPS against lefty pitchers.

With a low total of 7.5, I’m inclined to take the home underdog.

Dodgers vs. Pirates Prediction and Pick

Pick: Dodgers (-185)

Pirates rookie starter Jared Jones is trending in the wrong way, seeing his velocity and strikeout numbers dwindle as the season goes on. After posting an ERA of 2.86 in April, that number jumped to 3.99 in May.

He now faces a Dodgers team that is second i OPS on the year and is tied for fifth in runs scored. The team simply has a ceiling that the Pirates lack, and the Dodgers will have its best pitcher in Tyler Glasnow (3.04 ERA) on the mound.

I’ll grab Los Angeles at a reasonable price.

Royals vs. Guardians Prediction and Pick

Pick: Royals (+105)

Two of the most impressive teams in the big leagues this season meet in Cleveland, and I’m going to take the underdog Royals, who have one of the best pitchers in the sport on the mound.

Seth Lugo has thrived in Kansas City this season, posting a 1.72 ERA with excellent command (sub-six percent) and allowing a ton of soft contact (38%). The Guardians are an elite hitting team, but the Royals out-pace the AL Central leaders, ranking eighth in OPS against while Cleveland is 11th.

There’s not much separation between the two teams so I’ll take the underdogs.

Brewers vs. Phillies Prediction and Pick

Pick: Phillies (-170)

I don’t trust Brewers starter Colin Rea, who has some ghastly underlying metrics, including an xERA that is a 5.48, far higher than his actual ERA of 3.77.

A lot of his looming regression is due to the fact that Rea has a strikeout rate of just 16% this season, so balls are being put in play, making it more likely that a hit is generated.

Against a Phillies team that is top five in OPS, I’ll trust the team to generate enough contact to plate enough runs and win at home.

Mets vs. Nationals Prediction and Pick

Pick: Mets (-115)

David Peterson made his first start of the season last week against the Dodgers, so there’s not much of a sample size to go off of, but I like him in this matchup for him against the Nationals, who are 27th in OPS against left handed pitching.

I’ll buy low on Peterson with a limited sample and for him to win in a coin flip matchup against the Nats.

Twins vs. Yankees Prediction and Pick

Pick: Yankees (-185)

Luis Gil is the AL Rookie of the Year favorite, and pitching like a Cy Young for that matter.

Gil is striking out 31% of batters, in the 92nd percentile per MLBStatcast, and has a 1.99 ERA. Batters haven’t been able to catch up to the rookie just yet, and he is backed by arguably the best lineup in baseball with the scorching Aaron Judge in the middle of the lineup.

The former AL MVP is hitting .391 with 14 home runs and 27 RBI’s in the last 25 games for the Bronx Bombers.

Orioles vs. Jays Prediction and Pick

Pick: Orioles (-170)

Baltimore is a worthwhile bet as road favorites with AL Cy Young favorite Corbin Burnes toeing the rubber.

The former Brewers ace is on a roll in his first season with the Orioles, pitching to a 2.35 ERA through 12 starts in which the O’s are 8-4 in those starts.

Toronto is simply ill equipped to keep up with innings eater Bowden Francis on the mound and an offense that is 25th in OPS over the last week.

Braves vs. Red Sox Prediction and Pick

Pick: Braves (-170)

Max Fried has found his form, fresh off a May in which he had a 2.04 ERA across 35.1 innings pitched, tossing seven or more innings in four of five starts.

He draws a limited Red Sox lineup that will be at a disadvantage on the mound as well. While Kutter Crawford has been solid this season, he is due for a drop-off as he has an ERA of 3.29 and an xERA of 3.71.

I’ll trust the more reliable product to get it done in Fried and the Braves.

Tigers vs. Rangers Prediction and Pick

Pick: Rangers (+100)

Dane Dunning has some whacky numbers, including a career worst walk rate of 11% due to his increased focus on striking batters out (career high 27%), but the TIgers won’t challenge him with the team’s lack of discipline at the dish.

Detroit is bottom 10 in walks drawn this season and 23rd in on-base percentage, so I believe Dunning’s ability to generate swings and misses, he is in the 88th percentile in whiff percentage, will be able to be the difference in this one.

White Sox vs. Cubs Prediction and Pick

Pick: White Sox (+240)

The White Sox can’t hit lefties well at all, this is the worst hitting team in the big leagues against southpaws, but I can’t back the Cubs at this big of a number, even with NL Rookie of the Year favorite Shota Imanaga on the mound.

I can’t trust Chicago with the team hitting this poor of late. Over the last 15 days, the Cubs are hitting only .217 as a unit and have dropped nine of 12 games in that stretch.

The Cubs lineup doesn’t justify this price tag.

Cardinals vs. Astros Prediction and Pick

Pick: Astros (-150)

Can Houston turn a corner? The team is still seven games under .500, but is hoping it can find its form in June, and the same can be said for its rookie right hander Spencer Arrighetti, who has a 5.98 ERA through nine starts.

However, the rookie has an xERA of 4.29, indicating that some better results should be coming for him. Further, the Cardinals walk at about a league average rate, which can be impactful for Arrighetti, who has an 11% walk rate.

Reds vs. Rockies Prediction and Pick

Pick: Rockies (+115)

The Reds can’t hit lefty pitching, full stop. The team is 23rd in batting average against southpaws, which negates some of its edge in a hitter friendly Coors Field against the Rockies.

Padres vs. Angels Prediction and Pick

Pick: Padres (-115)

I’ll bet on Adam Mazur of the Padres in his big league debut on Tuesday against the sliding Angels, who have dropped four straight.

While San Diego struggles to hit lefty pitching, 25th in OPS, that is priced in and I’ll play on the upside of Mazur, who has limited his walks to about 4% in Triple-A this season.

Giants vs. Diamondbacks Prediction and Pick

Pick: Diamondbacks (-120)

In a battle of left handed pitchers, I’ll side with the Diamondbacks at home, who are far better at the plate against southpaws.

Arizona is the fourth best hitting team against lefties while the Giants check in 11th.

Both teams are bottom five in bullpen ERA so this game can be full of twists and turns, but I’ll trust Arizona at home at a small price.

Mariners vs. Athletics Prediction and Pick

Pick: Athletics (+135)

Rookie Mitch Spence has done a little bit of everything for the A’s pitching staff this season, starting in three of 14 appearances on the year, but he has been promising nonetheless.

Spence has posted a 3.52 ERA and should have even better results in the future with a 3.17 xERA with a great ability to limit hard contact, ranking in the 64th percentile in hard-hit percentage, per MLBStatcast.

I’ll take a flier on the Athletics to knock off the Mariners.

45 y/o Mourinho alternative is serious option to replace Martin at Rangers

With his job seemingly hanging by a threat, one managerial candidate is now reportedly a serious candidate to replace Russell Martin at Rangers.

Russell Martin Rangers sack update

Without a win in the Scottish Premiership in five attempts, the pressure is mounting on Martin at Ibrox. Reports have insisted that he still has the backing of the 49ers, but Martin admitted that there were a number of fans who didn’t want him at the club in the first place.

It has reached a stage where even attempts to enjoy a team bonding session at Loch Lomond have received a fair share of criticism. Simply put, Martin can currently do no right in Scotland.

Other reports have claimed that it will be game over if Martin fail to defeat Hibernian in the Scottish League Cup quarter-final this weekend. Defeat would make it six straight games without a win in all competitions and it would be hard to argue a case that the former Southampton manager should still be in charge.

Once worth £30m, Rangers flop now looks like he's worth less than Tavernier

This Glasgow Rangers flop who was once valued at £30m now looks worth even less than James Tavernier.

ByDan Emery Sep 17, 2025

For the 49ers, it would be back to square one if they chose to sack the manager that they had so much faith in at the start of the summer. Whether one particular name would take the job would be the big question in the face of such a decision.

Gerrard now a serious option to replace Martin

In an unexpected turn of events, it could be out with the new and in with the old at Ibrox. According to TeamTalk, Steven Gerrard is now a serious option to replace Martin now that he is free from previous contractual issues from his time at Al-Ettifaq.

The emergence of the former Rangers boss comes after the news that Jose Mourinho is set to return to Benfica, rather than remain a candidate to join the Gers. The so-called ‘Special One’ was considered an option, but Rangers’ ability to reach his wage demands have often been questioned whenever those rumours have emerged.

So, the attention has gone back towards Gerrard. The 45-year-old remains the last Rangers manager to win a Scottish Premiership title, sealing victory in 2020/21, but will have some making up to do after ditching the club for Aston Villa midway through the campaign that followed.

That said, if the 49ers are looking for someone who knows how to transform Rangers into winners, then Gerrard is arguably their man ahead of the likes of Sean Dyche and Danny Rohl.

Rangers could axe Martin to hire manager who McCoist thinks is "remarkable"

Glasgow Rangers suffered their joint-worst defeat in a European match on Wednesday night when they were hammered 6-0 by Club Brugge in their Champions League qualifier.

“Rangers fans deserve a lot better” are the words that left Ally McCoist’s mouth in his post-game analysis on TNT Sports’ coverage of the match, and it was a fair comment to make.

Russell Martin has only won three, drawing four and losing three, of his ten matches in charge of the Ibrox giants he was appointed as the new head coach in the summer.

Why Rangers should sack Russell Martin

The Light Blues have conceded 17 goals, failed to win any of their Scottish Premiership matches, and been knocked out of the Champions League within the first month of the 2025/26 campaign.

Rangers managerRussellMartinapplauds fans after the match

However you want to spin it, whatever mitigation there is to add with signings or red cards, it has not been good enough, and the supporters, as Ally said, deserve better.

The Scottish Sun reports that a section, at least, of supporters were chanting in favour of Martin losing his job. Anyone who tuned in to watch the match or was there in the flesh would have heard some of the choice words that came from the travelling fans.

Manager Focus

Who are the greatest coaches in the land? Football FanCast’s Manager Focus series aims to reveal all.

There is no getting away from how disastrous the start to the season has been and, with a clash with Celtic at Ibrox on the horizon, the board should make the decision to brutally part ways with him.

The manager Rangers should replace Russell Martin with

Back in April, prior to Rangers appointing Martin, McCoist backed the Scottish giants to pursue a deal for Sean Dyche, who is currently out of a job.

Everton managerSeanDychebefore the match

He said: “I’d take Sean [Dyche at Rangers] all day. I think Sean Dyche is an excellent manager, excellent. His work at Burnley was nothing short of remarkable.”

With this in mind, the board should consider parting ways with Martin to pursue a deal for Dyche, who could solve the woeful defensive shortcomings that have been seen on the pitch this season.

The English tactician has clear principles in place for how he wants his side to be compact and defend spaces in a 4-4-2 formation, as explained in the video above.

A 4-4-2 system that can easily pivot to a 4-4-1-1 out of possession or a 4-2-3-1 in possession provides tactical flexibility without giving up numbers defensively or leaving the team overexposed in transition, as has been the case with Martin’s system.

As you can see in the table above, Dyche has enjoyed a very respectable career in the Premier League with Burnley and Everton, which also speaks to his defensive coaching because he has largely steered his teams clear of relegation with his hard-to-beat set-ups.

However, the out-of-work boss also coached a winning team with Burnley in the past when he racked up 93 points to win the title in the Championship in the 2015/16 campaign, his last season outside of the Premier League.

Everton manager Sean Dyche

Having a manager who has a blend of experience in coaching a winning side, as Rangers need to be in the Premiership, as well as knowing how to organise and structure a defence effectively, could be exactly what is needed at Ibrox.

Therefore, Dyche, despite maybe not being an exciting appointment on paper, could be the silver bullet that the 49ers need to turn to after this horrendous start under Martin, if they decide to sack him.

Mandhana on RCB's disappointing season: 'Midway we just lost somewhere'

The defending champions started WPL 2025 with two wins, but five straight losses cost them a knockout spot

Vishal Dikshit12-Mar-2025

Smriti Mandhana had a rough WPL 2025 as batter and captain•BCCI

Smriti Mandhana had a poor WPL 2025, both as captain of a team that didn’t make the knockouts and as a batter with mediocre returns. WPL winners in 2024, RCB finished second-last this time, just above UP Warriorz, and that too on net run-rate.Mandhana’s demeanour at her final press conference of this season after an 11-run win against against Mumbai Indians, however, gave us a wise and pragmatic captain who had ended on a high, and not a sullen leader after a disappointing season. She became slightly philosophical, too, almost summoning the cricketing gods as she rued her team’s failure to clinched some of the crucial moments.”Yeah, we were just having a joke post the match that we started the season on a high, ended it on a high and midway we just lost somewhere,” Mandhana said after the game on Tuesday. “Pretty much that sums up our season. But yeah, having lost a lot of players from last season post the auction, definitely we had our thinking shoes on in between the auction and the season. But the way we started, I really thought that we are in it.”Related

Mandhana, Wareham, Rana breach Brabourne fortress to deny MI top spot

The defending champions started with two wins before stuttering to five straight losses that cost them a knockout spot.Injuries to Asha Sobhana, Shreyanka Patil and Sophie Molineux, and Sophie Devine opting for a break didn’t help, and the big setback was that RCB didn’t win even one out of their four home games, in stark contrast to 2024 when they won three out of five in Bengaluru. What hurt them further was that at home, where local fans again filled the stands, RCB lost two matches by agonisingly close margins: by four wickets with one ball to spare to MI and then the Super Over loss to Warriorz.”I think in Bangalore, a lot of things didn’t go our way,” Mandhana said. “But I am really proud of the way the team showed the character. Losing a lot of close matches is not easy on a team and I think we lost first two to three matches, which were pretty close. But everyone was really positive, which is something I am really pleased [about] as a captain. You win or lose. Sometimes in franchise cricket, these things go your way, and you win it. But when it doesn’t go your way, and the team sticks together, that is a team for me.”5:25

Mel Jones: ‘Phenomenal’ Perry played a different sort of innings

What also didn’t work for RCB at home was the toss. Teams opted to chase as the league moved from Vadodara to Bengaluru to Lucknow to finally Mumbai, and with the lack of dew and big totals in the first innings, chasing teams won most matches.RCB, in their home leg, lost all four tosses and were inserted by oppositions. At their home stretch also came Mandhana’s own lean patch, which meant the team largely relied on No. 3 Ellyse Perry for the bulk of the runs. But their totals were never enough.Perry’s prolific run placed her second among the run-scorers this season and on top in the WPL overall.”Sometimes, there’s something called cricketing god, which I believe a lot in,” Mandhana said. “You do a lot of things right and in the last two or three overs, things don’t go your way. We won [the title] last year by winning those moments. And this year, in the first two matches in Bangalore, we couldn’t make those moments ours, which is, I feel, a turning point for us, especially the first two matches.”Looking back, I wouldn’t want to throw anyone under the bus saying that would have changed it. We all, together as a team, could have contributed a lot more. Me as a batter in the mid phase, I was not able to score a lot of runs.”I think especially the Bangalore leg, losing the toss, not many teams could actually put up more than 160, but we could do that only because the way she [Perry] batted out there. Just really good to have her around the team, around all the Indians as well, because [there’s] a lot to take from her, lot to learn from her. And I am sure a lot of people in the team watch her and try and take a lot of things from her. And I hope that it only goes well for Indian cricket because people like that make you work really hard.”Richa Ghosh struck at 175.57 in WPL 2025•BCCI

The other positive for RCB was the big hitting of Richa Ghosh, whose strike rate of 175.57 was the best in the team (minimum 30 balls faced). She smashed 13 sixes and 25 fours on her way to 230 runs off 131 balls. She ended the RCB campaign also in style, particularly when going after Shabnim Ismail. Ghosh scooped and reverse scooped Ismail and reverse swept Hayley Matthews for boundaries on her way to 36 off 22 on Tuesday.”She is just amazing to watch,” Mandhana said of Ghosh. “I have seen her grow throughout the last three seasons of WPL and with the Indian team. The way she can change the game single-handedly is a sight to watch. When she is out there, the other dugout can’t sit peacefully, and no equation is less or more for her.”I mean, for us to chase 223-odd runs [against Warriorz] and just losing by ten runs and the way she batted… For batters like us, we see the smaller side [of the boundary], but for batters like Richa, they just see the ball and hit with their power.”The variety of shots is something she has really worked on. People always just relate Richa with a lot of power, but the cuts, the reverse sweeps today, which she switch hit. A lot of things have gone in, a lot of work, and her work ethics have been really good for the past year. [I am] really happy for her, and I hope she keeps going because [Ghosh] batting like that is amazing signs for Indian cricket.”

Grealish-esque signing: Everton ready late move for "special" £50m star

What a sensational start it was for Jack Grealish as an Everton player. The Toffees’ first professional game at their state-of-the-art new ground, the Hill Dickinson Stadium, was memorable thanks to a 2-0 win over Brighton and Hove Albion.

Grealish made all the difference for David Moyes’ side, assisting both of the goals to help secure the three points for his new club, including a fizzing left-footed cross to pick out Illiman Ndiaye for the opener.

Grealish could prove to be one of Everton’s best pieces of business in the transfer market this summer, and more signings might yet join him.

Everton plotting late move for £50m addition

The Toffees were able to secure the signing of Tyler Dibling from Southampton in the last couple of days. The Saints academy graduate made the move to Merseyside for a fee in the region of £40m, including add-ons.

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

However, he might not be the last addition made by Moyes this summer. According to a report from TBR Football, Everton are one of the sides in the race to sign Atletico Madrid midfielder Conor Gallagher.

They are said to be one of the sides who could ‘make a late attempt’ to bring the former Chelsea star to the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

However, this will not be a straightforward battle. Gallagher is wanted by five other Premier League clubs, including Crystal Palace, where he was once on loan, and Manchester United.

As for a price if he was to make a permanent move, it was revealed in July that the England star is available for £50m.

Why Gallagher would be a good signing

If the Toffees were to acquire the services of Gallagher before Monday’s deadline, they would be bringing a “special” midfielder to the club, as Statman Dave described him. He has played in the top flight for Chelsea, his boyhood club, as well as loan spells at Palace and West Brom.

Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher

At just 25 years of age, Gallagher is an incredibly experienced player. He has played 136 times in the top flight of England, scoring 18 times and assisting 13. He has also shown great versatility, playing mainly as an eight but also as a defensive midfielder, attacking midfielder and out wide on the right.

Of course, the Cobham graduate has spent the past 12 months in Spain playing for Diego Simeone’s Atleti. He made 52 appearances last term for the club, chipping in with ten goals and assists. That included a strike against Real Madrid in the Champions League.

This potential Everton move for Gallagher is certainly Grealish-esque, in a couple of ways. Firstly, the former Aston Villa star is an England international just like Gallagher, with the pair having played together five times for the Three Lions, as per Transfermarkt.

On top of that, they have both departed some of Europe’s biggest clubs. Grealish switched to Merseyside from Manchester City on a loan deal that could turn permanent, and, of course, Gallagher will be departing the Spanish capital and Atleti to join Moyes’ side.

If Gallagher can have anything like the sort of impact Grealish has already had for Everton, he will be well on his way to becoming a successful addition.

As per Sofascore, Grealish created three chances and won six duels on his home debut, setting up both his side’s goals.

Gallagher will bring tenacity off the ball and a goal threat in possession. The stats from his two Premier League seasons with Chelsea highlight just that, with the defender averaging 3.8 and 3.6 tackles and interceptions per 90 minutes in each of the respective seasons, and had an expected goal involvement tally of 0.23xGI and 0.22xGI each game, respectively.

It is easy to see how this move could be similar to that of Grealish. The 25-year-old would also be leaving one of Europe’s biggest clubs for the Blue half of Merseyside, and is looking to secure his England place in a World Cup year.

For both club and player, this could be a fantastic move ahead of Monday’s transfer deadline.
