Romano gives key update on LFC target Gavi

Rumoured Liverpool transfer target Gavi looks set to commit his long-term future to Barcelona, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

The Lowdown: Gavi linked with Reds move

The 17-year-old has burst onto the scene and looks like the next great player to have emerged from Barca’s ranks, making his Spain debut already and winning three caps.

Liverpool were linked with a move for Gavi last month in what was an exciting rumour, considering the potential that the midfielder appears to have.

With Blaugrana legend Xavi taking charge at the Nou Camp, however, the situation surrounding the teenager’s future now looks more clear.

The Latest: Romano shuts down transfer

According to Romano on Twitter, a long-term contract offer is on the table for Gavi, with the player himself wanting to stay put at Barcelona. The journalist posted:

“Barcelona are prepared to enter in the final stages of Gavi’s new contract negotiation. The long-term proposal [salary increasing from year to year] will be on the table soon… and Gavi wants to stay.

“Xavi also approved Barça board plan to keep Gavi for the next years.”

The Verdict: Always unlikely

While the idea of Gavi trading Barca for Liverpool was an exciting one, there was always a feeling that he would end up remaining at the club where he has come through the ranks.

At 17, it would have been a shock if the Spaniard had upped sticks and moved on so soon. However, should the Catalan giants continue to struggle as they have been this season, his mindset could change eventually.

Football legend Lionel Messi has hailed Gavi as ‘very good’, which speaks volumes about the teenager’s potential, and it will be intriguing to see if the Reds keep an eye on his progress.

Everton handed Yerry Mina injury boost

Everton saw out a 0-0 draw against Tottenham Hotspur in their latest Premier League game at Goodison Park at the weekend, placing them in 11th place in the league table with 15 points alongside Crystal Palace and Leicester City who also have 15 points on the board heading into the latest international break.

With a two week interval before the Toffees take on Manchester City away from home in their next league fixture, it seems as though Everton could be welcoming back one of their key players just in time to take on Pep Guardiola’s side, which we feel will leave a lot of fans buzzing.

What’s the news?

Speaking after the draw against Antonio Conte’s side, Everton manager Rafa Benitez revealed he is “optimistic” that defender Yerry Mina will be able to return to training in the next few days.

The Spaniard suggested that he is “very close” to a return to action after missing their last three Premier League matches because of a hamstring problem.

Not only will it be good to have Mina back available for selection against City, but it seems as though his return will be coming at the best time. Mason Holgate will be banned for the game against the Manchester club after he was red-carded in the late stages of the match against Tottenham so a replacement will evidently be required.

Since joining the Merseyside club from Barcelona back in the 2018 summer transfer window in a deal worth a reported fee of £28.5m, the 27-year-old, who is currently valued at £18m according to Transfermarkt, has made 83 appearances for the Toffees across all competitions, chipping in with six goals in the process.

In the six Premier League games he’s played in for Everton so far this season, Mina has managed to rack up an average of four clearances per game, 1.5 interceptions per game and one tackle per game, highlighting just how much of a defensive unit he can be for the Toffees.

This also says to us that Mina could well be a vital figure for Everton when their match against City comes around. They have managed to score 22 goals so far this season in the league and have made more passes than any other top-flight team with 7095 made across 11 games.

With this in mind, if the defender does manage to get back to training in the next few days and use his time to fully recover and prepare himself for the City game, his presence will give Everton a great chance of securing a positive result against the reigning league champions. That’s something that will undoubtedly leave supporters delighted.

Rangers: Fans react to GVB report

Rangers fans on Twitter have been reacting to a report from The 4th Official that the appointment of Giovanni van Bronckhorst as manager is now imminent.

The outlet claimed ‘really really positive’ talks were held between the Dutchman and the club on Saturday.

As of Monday evening, an announcement within 24-48 hours seemed very possible, according to their sources.

GVB a fan favourite

Van Bronckhorst has emerged as supporters’ ‘clear’ no. 1 choice for the role in the days following the departure of Steven Gerrard, according to The Daily Record.

He spent three years at Rangers as a player, joining from Feyenoord in 1998 in a £6.75million deal. And during that time, he helped the Gers to win back-to-back Scottish titles.

Later in his career, the left-back would lift the Premier League, Champions League and La Liga trophies.

If indeed Van Bronckhorst is to be appointed, his first game in charge is set to be Sunday’s Scottish League Cup semifinal against Hibernian at Hampden Park.

Winning could set-up a potential showpiece against arch-rivals Celtic, who face St Johnstone in the other semi.

Newcastle in talks with Overmars

An update has emerged on Ajax chief Marc Overmars, regarding Newcastle’s interest in bringing him back to England.

What’s the talk?

According to The Mirror, the Saudi Arabian consortium PIF are in talks with the Dutchman over a deal to become the director of football at St. James’ Park as they look to make a major decision behind the scenes.

The report claims that the former Arsenal player is interested in the role as he would be given funds to work with in the transfer window. He is also said to be keen on bringing Erik ten Hag along with him from Amsterdam to be Steve Bruce’s replacement.

Ecstatic

Newcastle fans will surely be left feeling ecstatic with this news for various reasons.

For starters, it shows that PIF are keen to immediately bring in a footballing figure to run the club behind the scenes. Overmars enjoyed a terrific career as a player, playing well over 400 competitive games for Arsenal, Ajax and Barcelona combined, showing that he has a strong footballing background.

He has taken his expertise and applied it to his job at Ajax. The Dutch giants have sold £600m worth of talent during his time at the club, with the likes of Hakim Ziyech, Frenkie de Jong and Matthijs de Ligt all coming through before being sold on for profit under Overmars’ watch. He has shown that he can oversee a successful recruitment system whilst still achieving results on the pitch, with Ajax reaching the quarter-finals and the semi-finals of the Champions League in that time.

The Magpies fans would also be delighted to see ten Hag arrive alongside Overmars. He has won five trophies in four years at the club, winning 2.34 points per game on average across 184 matches in charge of Ajax. This is along with his aforementioned achievements in the Champions League and the long list of talents, including de Jong and de Ligt, taken out of his squad throughout his time there.

The Dutch manager has shown that he can achieve success without spending huge amounts of money or retaining his best talent, which proves that he is an excellent coach who can get the best out of what he has at his disposal. That is why Newcastle fans would love to see him on Tyneside along with Overmars, as he could help them to avoid relegation before pushing on next season.

Newcastle transfer news on Insigne

Newcastle United are now reportedly targeting a potential move for Lorenzo Insigne.

The Lowdown: Contract breakdown

As per Il Mattino (via Sport Witness), talks have been ‘difficult’ between Insigne and Napoli over a renewal of his contract, which expires next summer.

It means that he will be able to talk to other clubs in the January transfer window, ahead of a potential free transfer.

The Latest: Insigne targeted

According to Il Mattino (via Sport Witness), the St. James’ Park faithful have now ‘targeted’ Insigne ahead of a potential swoop, but there has been no official contact yet.

Teams in the MLS are also being considered in terms of securing his signature, but it feels ‘unlikely’ that he will leave his native Italy at the moment.

The Verdict: Bargain

Given that he is currently rated at £43.2m by Transfermarkt, signing Insigne on a free transfer would be an absolute bargain.

The Napoli captain would offer leadership to the squad off of the pitch, and lead by example on it, with no fewer than 111 goals and a further 88 assists in 406 games in total over all competitions for the Naples side (Transfermarkt).

Rafa Benitez, once of the Magpies and having recently being linked with a return to the North East from Everton, sung the praises of Insigne when he was manager at Napoli back in 2015, and for both of them to arrive on Tyneside could well be a match made in heaven.

Buoyant after their win yesterday, Bangladesh Under-19 continued strongly to take a 2-1 lead in the five-match encounter. A quick fifty from Saikat Ali coupled with another superb bowling display from Sabbir Rahman saw them assert their supremacy yet again at the Shamsul Huda Stadium.Choosing to bat first, Bangladesh U-19 were lifted by Saikat’s confident strokeplay. His 76-ball innings comprised nine fours and three sixes, and the fourth-wicket stand of 50 with captain Mahmudul Hasan set a solid platform for the hosts. Chathura Peiris took three wickets to keep Bangladesh U-19 in check but Tasamul Haque (42) and Noor Hossain took the hosts past 250.Even as Sri Lanka U-19 lost wickets regularly, captain Dinesh Chandimal led from the front with a well-compiled half-century. Together with Kushal Janith Perera, they added 88 for the fourth wicket as the visitors looked to be well on course. But Sabbir had other plans, dismissing both batsmen, triggering off a panic that resulted the tail surrendering meekly by the 43rd over.

Lahore Lions win throws Group B wide open

Group B

A four-wicket haul from Waqas Ahmed and twin fifties from the openers, Raza Ali and Sohail Ahmed, helped Lahore Lions coast to a seven-wicket win against Islamabad Leopards at the Gaddafi Stadium. Put in by the hosts, the Islamabad openers made a solid start, putting on 65. But once both fell identically, caught by Raza off Waqas, the remaining batsmen struggled as they were reduced to 119 for 6. Ashar Zaidi, with his run-a-ball 48 along with Imad Wasim (29) fought bravely with a 45-run partnership as the visitors were bowled out for a disappointing 179 in the 31st over. Raza and Sohail looked completely in charge during the chase, racing away to 104. Both were aggressive as they decimated the bowling. Raza stroked seven boundaries and a six before he finally fell on 54. Sohail remained unbeaten on 87 off 77 balls, hitting ten boundaries en route, as Lahore reached the target in the 29th over. With the win, Lahore displaced Islamabad at the top, with the top three teams all locked on eight points.Peshawar Panthers and Sialkot Stallions had to be content with split points with the the weather playing havoc at the Jinnah Stadium. Sialkot chose to field in the 28-overs-a-side match and were given the perfect start by left-arm paceman Naved Arif who accounted for Peshawar’s top three batsmen. Offspinner Suleman Ali picked up 3 for 26 as the visitors ended on 128. Kamran Younus then turned on the heat during the reply hitting five boundaries and a six during his 17-ball 32. Even Haris Sohail’s 26 off 16 balls was to no avail as only 10 overs could be bowled with Sialkot remaining stuck on 87 for 2.

Group C

Both matches – between Pakistan Customs and Sui Southern Gas Corporation at the Diamond Club Ground and Khan Research Laboratories’ fixture against Zarai Tarqiati Bank Limited at the Khan Research Laboratory Ground – were abandoned without a ball being bowled.
