A four-wicket haul from Waqas Ahmed and twin fifties from the openers, Raza Ali and Sohail Ahmed, helped Lahore Lions coast to a seven-wicket win against Islamabad Leopards at the Gaddafi Stadium. Put in by the hosts, the Islamabad openers made a solid start, putting on 65. But once both fell identically, caught by Raza off Waqas, the remaining batsmen struggled as they were reduced to 119 for 6. Ashar Zaidi, with his run-a-ball 48 along with Imad Wasim (29) fought bravely with a 45-run partnership as the visitors were bowled out for a disappointing 179 in the 31st over. Raza and Sohail looked completely in charge during the chase, racing away to 104. Both were aggressive as they decimated the bowling. Raza stroked seven boundaries and a six before he finally fell on 54. Sohail remained unbeaten on 87 off 77 balls, hitting ten boundaries en route, as Lahore reached the target in the 29th over. With the win, Lahore displaced Islamabad at the top, with the top three teams all locked on eight points.Peshawar Panthers and Sialkot Stallions had to be content with split points with the the weather playing havoc at the Jinnah Stadium. Sialkot chose to field in the 28-overs-a-side match and were given the perfect start by left-arm paceman Naved Arif who accounted for Peshawar’s top three batsmen. Offspinner Suleman Ali picked up 3 for 26 as the visitors ended on 128. Kamran Younus then turned on the heat during the reply hitting five boundaries and a six during his 17-ball 32. Even Haris Sohail’s 26 off 16 balls was to no avail as only 10 overs could be bowled with Sialkot remaining stuck on 87 for 2.

Group C

Both matches – between Pakistan Customs and Sui Southern Gas Corporation at the Diamond Club Ground and Khan Research Laboratories’ fixture against Zarai Tarqiati Bank Limited at the Khan Research Laboratory Ground – were abandoned without a ball being bowled.

وكان آرسنال قد تعاقد مع البرازيلي جابريل جيسوس من مانشستر سيتي هذا الصيف، حيث انضم صاحب الـ25 عامًا للجانرز مقابل 52 مليون يورو.

وحسب صحيفة “ذا أثيلتيك” البريطانية، فإن آرسنال وجه انتباهه إلى الأوكراني أليكسندر زينشينكو، وذلك بعد فشل النادي في التعاقد مع ليساندرو مارتينيز مدافع أياكس.

وفي نفس السياق ذكر الصحفي الموثوق “فابريزيو رومانو”، أن مانشستر سيتي لا يمانع بيع أليكسندر زينشينكو، خاصًة وأن النادي يقترب من التعاقد مع مارك كوكوريلا من برايتون.

مانشستر سيتي سيتفاوض على بيع زينشينكو مقابل مبلغ مادي مناسب، ولكن إذا لم يصله عرض جيد من قبل آرسنال سوف يُبقى على مدافعه الأوكراني.

Steve Howey has urged Newcastle United to steer clear of signing Everton outcast James Rodriguez.

According to Calcio In Pillole, via Chronicle Live, the Magpies are set to hold talks with the £90,000-a-week Colombia international over a potential switch at boss Steve Bruce’s request.

The interest comes after Rodriguez has been ousted from the first-team picture by new Everton boss Rafa Benitez, with the ex-Real Madrid winger yet to appear in a matchday squad this season.

Rodriguez also infuriated Toffees fans when he admitted on his Twitch account that he did not know who his current employers were playing last weekend.

Having made the move to Goodison Park last September, Rodriguez has seen his Premier League career hampered by a host of injuries and made just 26 appearances last season.

Newcastle boss Bruce is looking to strengthen his squad with the transfer deadline looming, having only signed Joe Willock for £20million from Arsenal so far, but Howey does not want to see Rodriguez heading to St James’ Park.

He exclusively told The Transfer Tavern: “I wouldn’t go for him, if I’m being brutally honest. We’ve seen the trials and tribulations he’s had at Everton and that was under Carlo Ancelotti. He couldn’t get a tune out of him. 

“On his day, he is a very good player and lit the 2014 World Cup up. He is too much of a luxury player for me.

“I know what you’re going to get with him and it’s not a great deal, in my eyes.”

An update has emerged on Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi, regarding Leicester’s interest in his services.

According to Football London, Leicester have made an enquiry over a permanent deal to sign Callum Hudson-Odoi from Chelsea before the window slams shut.

The report claims that Borussia Dortmund are also interested in landing the English forward, but they are looking into a loan deal for the attacker.

Barnes 2.0

Brendan Rodgers could land a Harvey Barnes 2.0 with a deal for Hudson-Odoi on deadline day. Barnes has been a success since breaking into the first-team at the King Power Stadium and has been able to get fans off their seats with his exciting play on the wing.

He has a career average of 2.1 shots, 1.1 chances created and 1.5 dribbles per game, showing that he likes to make things happen in the final third – taking players on and either shooting or setting up a teammate for a shot.

His type of pacey, direct, play out wide could be exactly what Hudson-Odoi is able to offer to Leicester on the opposite flank. The 20-year-old has career averages of 1.0 shots, 1.1 chances created and 1.3 dribbles per game, although it is worth noting that the majority of his appearances for Chelsea have come as a substitute – skewing his per game averages somewhat.

Still, he could offer a similar type of threat on the right-wing to the one that Barnes offers on the left, creating a terrifying a attacking line-up for the Foxes.

Rodgers could have two players on the wings who are able to cut inside or go on the outside and are equally capable of having a shot on goal or creating a chance for their teammates.

Leicester have also reportedly agreed a deal to sign Ademola Lookman from RB Leipzig to further bolster their attacking ranks too, but Hudson-Odoi coming in would add real competition for places in the wide areas. Veteran winger Marc Albrighton could take a step back and be used in emergencies, allowing Barnes, Lookman, Perez and Hudson-Odoi to battle it out for their places.

With the Europa League, Premier League, League Cup and FA Cup in play for Leicester this year, squad depth could be incredibly important to avoid burnout – allowing Rodgers to rest players when needed. This is why Hudson-Odoi, who could be Barnes 2.0, should be brought in on a permanent deal alongside Lookman to complete a stunning deadline day.

Ex-Chelsea player Cesc Fabregas claimed that Hudson-Odoi has the potential to ‘become a terrific player’. This shows that he also has the potential to improve further and Rodgers could enjoy unlocking his talent on the training pitch.

Ricky Ponting is confident that Shaun Tait can make a successful return to Test cricket following his self-imposed exile from the game. Tait is preparing for his first-class comeback with South Australia after appearing in Australia A’s one-day tour of India last month.Tait believes his best chance of again featuring in the international arena will be in ODIs. His decision to walk away from the game in January due to mental and physical exhaustion followed his unsuccessful return to Test cricket and a disappointing run with injuries.”We all want to see him do well for South Australia when he goes back home as well,” Ponting told . “Once he gets some Shield cricket under his belt for South Australia, his opinion on playing Test cricket then might change, but at the moment he’s only played the shorter versions really and lots of positive signs there.”For someone like Shaun that [one-day cricket] would be the easier way back. The rigours on your body and your mental state I guess through a Test match or a tough Test match tour can really wear you down, there’s no doubt about that.”Tait, 25, has proven a destructive force in ODIs and has 33 wickets from 18 games, including an outstanding tally of 23 victims in the 2007 World Cup. His three Tests have been less successful – he has five wickets at 60.40 – but Ponting believes that Tait could still be a useful addition to the Test attack in the future.”I think he can be a match-winner for us in Test cricket,” Ponting said. “If he gets his body right and his mind right then we’ll hope down the track he does want to play five-day stuff with us.”

Steve Bruce has dropped an update on Allan Saint-Maximin’s future between now and the end of the window.

Newcastle manager Steve Bruce has claimed that there is a “100%” chance of the club keeping hold of Allan Saint-Maximin between now and the end of the transfer window.

He told The Mirror:

“You can never say never but absolutely, 100%, I will say that we are keeping him.

“I said when I walked through the door two years ago, and he did too, that the supporters will enjoy watching him.

“Whether you’re a Newcastle fan or not he’s worth his admission fee alone, isn’t he? In terms of his trickery, pace and power, he’s such a natural footballer, the kid.”

This comes after Rafa Benitez was linked with a raid of his former club earlier this summer. Everton are reportedly interested in a deal for the French flyer, but Bruce is confident that he will be going nowhere.

Fans will be buzzing

Newcastle fans will surely be buzzing with this news as it means that they do not need to worry about Saint-Maximin leaving St. James’ Park anytime soon.

The Frenchman’s style of play lends itself to getting fans excited, with his direct dribbling approach superb to watch in full flow. Last season in the Premier League, he averaged an exceptional 3.8 dribbles per game and this shows that he has the technical quality to commit defenders and open up gaps by gliding past players.

Supporters thrive off the jolt of excitement a bursting run down the line provides and that is why Saint-Maximin is someone they enjoy watching. Speaking earlier this year, Bruce hailed the winger as a special talent, who can get fans off their seats. He told The Sun:

“He’s one of them that will get you off your seat, and how many have got that these days?

“He scored a goal in training the other day which was just remarkable. He does that, where we all just have to stand and applaud.

“You can see when he’s playing and injury-free then he’s a special, special talent which inevitably will draw interest.”

This highlights exactly why the fans will be delighted with Bruce’s comments. It appears as though Saint-Maximin will continue to impress the St James’ faithful beyond the end of the transfer window and, hopefully, he will be able to maintain his fitness and play as much of the campaign as possible to give him the best chance of improving his goal contribution numbers after a stop-start 2020/21 campaign.

It was touch-and-go for a while as to whether they would even qualify from the North Division, but they found form at the right time. “This is an important week and we are getting down to the business end of the competition,” said Dale Benkenstein. “Ten days ago we had a mountain to climb but turned things around and now we are two games away from getting back to Lord’s. I think it suits us being at home and I think we are feared at home and playing this quarter-final at Riverside is a big advantage to us.”Nottinghamshire have had a few days off after not playing the last round of four-day games so will be fresh for the challenge. Will Jefferson is back in the squad and they have a deep batting order with Mark Ealham showing age hasn’t wearied him with bat or ball. Darren Pattinson, the Australian import, has been a revelation and is helping cover for the absence of Ryan Sidebottom and Stuart Broad with England.Kent v Somerset, Canterbury
Kent always had the makings of a side that could impress in one-day cricket this season, with so many allrounders that they often bat down to No. 9 or 10. The availability of Justin Kemp after his registration battle was a huge boost and his power-hitting gives the line-up a formidable appearance. In Yasir Arafat and Azhar Mahmood they also possess two of the finest death bowlers on the circuit.However, Somerset have played impressively in recent weeks with Championship wins against Kent and Surrey. The match against Kent went down to the wire as Joe Denly struck 149 before being trapped lbw by Charl Willoughby 21 runs short of victory. Somerset will still be without Andrew Caddick, but Alfonso Thomas has supplemented the attack alongside Willoughby and Steffan Jones. Ian Blackwell, in form with bat and ball, could well be their trump card.Leicestershire v Essex, Grace Road
Paul Grayson, the Essex coach, has backed his side to over the import-boosted Leicestershire side. The number of South Africans at Grace Road has caused plenty of debate in recent weeks, and there could be up to six on the team on Wednesday. “They have some good players and it’s no coincidence that their upturn in fortunes has come with six or seven South Africans in their squad,” Grayson said. “Whether you agree with it or not they have gone down the Kolpak route very heavily, which has led to a good start in the Championship and top place in their FPT group.Essex could field two Kolpaks – Grant Flower and Ryan ten Doeschate – while Danish Kaneria adds some spice to the spin attack. “We know we are a very good one-day side and can outplay anybody on our day. The top-order is strong, with the power-hitting of Craig Spearman a potential match-winner, alongside the support of Hamish Marshall and Marcus North.Yorkshire are boosted by the return of Matthew Hoggard from his broken thumb, and it could be a rare one-day outing for him after he admitted he had issues with the white ball earlier in the season. However, Yorkshire have such a list of injuries to their attack that any experience will be welcome. Rana Naved-ul-Hasan is a long-term absentee, but it looks as though Darren Gough will patch himself up again after various “niggles” against Lancashire. Gough is desperate to finish his career with a Lord’s final, but this will be a tough test.
