Sheffield United interested in Tom Cairney

Sheffield United are interested in a move to bring Tom Cairney to Bramall Lane this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by TEAMtalk, who claim that the Blades’ new manager Slavisa Jokanovi, is keen on a reunion with the Fulham midfielder, who could be available for around £10m in the upcoming transfer window.

However, it is also reported that Fulham will not sanction the sale of the 30-year-old until they have decided whether or not they wish to continue with Scott Parker in charge of the west London side.

Jokanovic must move

While an injury kept Cairney – whom Parker has dubbed an “outstanding” player – sidelined for the majority of Fulham’s Premier League campaign, the Scotland international nevertheless demonstrated his talent for the Cottagers over a limited amount of fixtures this season.

Over his 10 top-flight appearances for Scott Parker’s side, the £8.1m-rated man bagged one goal, provided one assist and created one big chance for his team-mates, as well as taking an average of 1.2 shots and making 1.7 key passes per game.

Cairney’s range of passing was also impressive, with the midfielder completing an average of 54.8 passes per game, in addition to averaging 2.9 successful chipped passes and four successful long balls over each of his league appearances.

These returns saw the 30-year-old earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 7.28, ranking him as the club’s best performer in the Premier League.

Furthermore, the £27,000-per-week Scot also highly impressed in Fulham’s promotion-winning campaign last season, scoring eight goals, registering three assists and creating six big chances over his 39 Championship appearances for the Cottagers, earning a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 7.12.

As such, a move for Cairney should be an absolute priority for Jokanovic this summer, as the midfielder would appear to have the quality to help fire Sheffield United back to the Premier League next season, as well as the potential of helping the Blades remain in the top flight thereafter.

Central demolish Otago to seal semi spot

The State Insurance Central Stags certainly roared at Queen’s Park, Invercargill today when they comprehensively defeated the State Otago Volts by seven wickets in their Shell Cup contest

Warwick Larkins18-Jan-2001The State Insurance Central Stags certainly roared at Queen’s Park, Invercargill today when they comprehensively defeated the State Otago Volts by seven wickets in their Shell Cup contest.Winning the toss and putting Otago into bat on a wicket which although covered had seen three days of wild and wet weather, Central Districts never looked back from ball one and the Otago batsmen began a procession back to the pavilion that looked like a parade of lemmings. At the end of 31.3 overs the Volts had been dismissed for a paltry 67 and truly realised what the value of winning the toss was. But, it is fair to state the the pitch while not at all satisfactory was never venomous and the Otago batsmen never really got into the mode of pushing the ball around and waiting for the bad ones to hit to the boundary.Only Warren McSkimming batting at number eight looked in any way assured, and even then only to a limited effect. Three Otago batsmen in Martyn Croy, Matthew Horne and Lee Germon were dismissed as a result of vagaries in the pitch but that could not be blamed for a total of 67 – the fourth lowest one-day total in New Zealand cricket history. The task of knocking off the 68 runs required was not a difficult chore for the Stags who found the pitch had lost most of its sting and they gleefully the victory target in 15.4 overs. It was not a game that will go down in the annals of one-day cricket memorables but it has given Central Districts a place in the semi-finals of the Shell Cup and Otago yet another exit to near the bottom of the class.

Lampard may raid Chelsea if appointed at Palace

When Frank Lampard was appointed Derby manager, a couple of Chelsea’s youngsters followed him to Pride Park.

And former Crystal Palace striker Marcus Bent believes that if Lampard becomes the new Crystal Palace boss, a similar situation could occur.

On that occasion, Fikayo Tomori and Mason Mount, two players have gone on to become England internationals, joined Lampard at Derby and both played a key role in the Rams reaching the play-offs.

Lampard hadn’t managed Chelsea at that time but having spent 18 months in the dugout in west London, there’s every chance some out of favour players could link-up with him at Selhurst Park, should Steve Parrish decide to hire him.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Tammy Abraham are two of those out of favour at Stamford Bridge and would appear, whilst highly rated midfielder Billy Gilmour is in desperate need of regular first-team football having been handed his senior Blues debut by Lampard.

Bent exclusively told The Transfer Tavern:

“Going to Crystal Palace, because of the finances, there is always a lot of loan deals because there isn’t a lot of finances to go out and buy players.

“If Frank was in there, he would probably bring some young players in on loan, show what they’re about, give them that experience.

“I think that Frank probably has a few things up his sleeve, he could probably talk to Chelsea.”

West Ham eyeing Sam Johnstone swoop

West Ham are leading the race to sign Sam Johnstone this summer, according to emerging reports…

What’s the word?

That’s according to ESPN, who claim that the Irons are the front-runners to land the coveted West Brom goalkeeper due to manager David Moyes previously working with the 28-year-old at Manchester United.

The Red Devils are also said to be interested in bringing him back to the club. with David de Gea’s future in doubt, whilst Spurs are thought to be admirers, too.

Albion are said to value their no.1 shot-stopper at around £18m after an impressive season between the sticks for the Midlands strugglers.

An eye on the future?

It wouldn’t be the biggest surprise to see Moyes sign a new gloveman in the summer as by the time the new season swings around, first-choice goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski will be 36 and his backup, Darren Randolph, will be 34.

Despite his side possessing the worst defensive record in the Premier League, Johnstone has actually been a commanding presence in goal for the Baggies and without him, they’d probably be officially relegated already. At 6 foot 4, he has proven to be one of the division’s best shot-stoppers – hardly a surprise given they face so many attempts each game.

As per FBRef, the £32.5k-per-week Hawthorns star makes 4.27 saves per 90 minutes, the most in the Premier League. And his success-rate of 71.2% ranks slightly ahead of Moyes’ current no.1 (68.5%).

Johnstone has earned high praise throughout the campaign, as a result of his fine performances.

“He’s one of the best [goalkeepers],” explained manager Sam Allardyce to talkSPORT. Whilst Glenn Hoddle told the Evening Standard: “I have seen him four times this year and he has been outstanding.”

He has kept some big names at bay with his imposing stature between the sticks, too – mooted Irons target Danny Ings couldn’t score past him despite two shots, and in that game, Johnstone rated as SofaScore’s top player and similarly, not even Edinson Cavani could find the net either, with the shot-stopper among Albion’s best-performers again.

Recently he was called up to Gareth Southgate’s England squad but did not feature on the pitch, though that is an encouraging sign for him ahead of this summer’s European Championships.

Also lauded as a “diamond” to work with by Steve Bruce, Johnstone would be an interesting candidate to push Fabianski and become Moyes’ next first-choice.

It’s a move that former Hammers man Frank McAvennie would like to see happen too. Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast this week, he said: “I think it would be really good business,” before adding: “It’s right up West Ham’s street.”

GSB, Moyes and the club should absolutely seal a swoop for Johnstone this summer. At £18m, it could prove to be a steal.

Gers fans love Morelos news

Many Glasgow Rangers fans are delighted after a report from The 4th Official claimed that Alfredo Morelos does not want to leave Ibrox this summer.

The 24-year-old was heavily linked with a move away from the 55-time Scottish champions last summer, with AC Milan (Football Insider via Glasgow Live) and Marseille (Le10 Foot) said to be interested, while the Colombia international even said earlier this year that his dream is to move to the Premier League (Radio Caracol). It seemed that the Gers would struggle to keep him at the club beyond this term, given such illustrious transfer interest.

However, this latest report has suggested that the 24-year-old wants to stay at Rangers. By winning the Premiership already this campaign, the Gers have earned themselves a place in the third qualifying round for the Champions League next season – a run in Europe’s premier club competition may be too enticing for Morelos to turn down.

The news was shared on Twitter by The 4th Official’s Twitter account, and it attracted plenty of delight from Gers supporters. These fans took to the social media platform to share their thoughts.

Spurs legend reacts to Bale quotes

Former Tottenham Hotspur captain Gary Mabbutt insists that Gareth Bale has not done anything wrong by claiming that he could return to Real Madrid at the end of the season, telling Football FanCast that he did not say anything wrong.

Bale was at the centre of a media storm last week as he claimed that his current plan was to return to Spain at the end of the season, when his loan spell at Spurs ends.

He said: “‘The original plan was to do a season at Spurs and after the Euros still have a year left at Real Madrid.

“My plan is to go back and that’s as far as I’ve planned, to be honest.”

His agent, Jonathan Barnett, subsequently claimed that the Wales international’s comments had been taken out of context.

It remains to be seen what the future holds for Bale but reports have suggested that Spurs do have the option to extend his stay at the club by another season should they so wish.

Bale has, thus far, somewhat struggled for minutes in the Spurs first-team but he has made 25 appearances in all competitions, scoring 10 goals and laying on three assists.

Mabbutt, though, believes that the media have somewhat twisted Bale’s words, insisting that he simply said what he knew – as it stands, Bale will only be with the club until the summer unless that option is triggered for Spurs to keep him.

Speaking exclusively to FFC, he said: “He’s on a season-long loan from Real Madrid. He’s asked what’s going to happen at the end of the season.

“As far as he’s aware he’s on a season long loan at Spurs, then he’s asked about what could happen. He’s going back to Real Madrid because that is what the current deal is.

“There’s nothing in place to say he’s staying for five years on loan or he’s going to be signing for Spurs.”

Bale struggled for minutes at Real before his move to Spurs, making just 12 starts in La Liga and failing to play in any of their final seven games in La Liga in 2019/20.

Celtic view Favre as Eddie Howe alternative

Two weeks ago it looked as though Roy Keane was set to be presented to the Celtic supporters as the Bhoys’ new manager.

However, after that move fell through, Eddie Howe has been at the height of Dermot Desmond’s agenda.

What’s the word?

The pendulum is swinging once again when it comes to uncovering the new manager of Celtic.

Howe had been the favourite over the last week but news emerged on Wednesday courtesy of his representatives that he wouldn’t be moving into a new job before the summer at the very earliest.

In a big twist to the tale, it was reported on the same day that the Hoops hierarchy have a new name they’d like to think that about; Lucien Favre.

Football Insider claim that Celtic are assessing the Swiss coach in case Howe rejects their offer.

Favre was reportedly interested in discussing the role with the Glaswegian side a few weeks ago but it wasn’t clear what their stance on the former Borussia Dortmund manager was.

Fresh information reveals they are indeed considering him, however.

Howe vs Favre

Howe’s managerial career has been a fairytale story so far. The 43-year-old took the Cherries from the brink of extinction in League Two to a team now full to the brim with Premier League television revenue.

His journey with the south-coast side is like something you’d see in a film, but it’s hard to ignore Favre’s exploits too.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-celtic-manager-and-transfer-news-roy-keane-nicky-butt-jesse-marsch-scott-brown” title=”Latest Celtic manager and transfer news!”]

Indeed, supporters should be drooling over the impact he could potentially have at Parkhead.

He may have been sacked from his role with Borussia Dortmund last December but his win rate is something to marvel at. During his stint in the Rhine, the 63-year-old won 61.82% of his matches.

That’s an eye-catching number for a manager who tasted defeat just 24 times in 110 games as manager.

Defensively well-organised, he also likes his teams to attack. Only Bayern Munich (100) scored more goals than Dortmund (84) in last season’s Bundesliga for instance.

As for Howe, the differences are night and day. He might be pragmatic on the training field but the fact of the matter is that he’s never recorded a win rate over the 50% mark.

He is, of course, still a young coach, but with Celtic going through a transition period the experience of Favre might be preferable.

Favre has also gone deep in continental competition, a further string to his bow that puts him above Howe on the pedestal.

With all that said, the twist that Favre is being assessed by the hierarchy should be music to the ears of supporters.
