Liverpool fans disappointed Ki-Jana Hoever isn’t in Champions League squad

[ad_pod ]

Liverpool have announced their squad for the Champions League group stages and the omission of Ki-Jana Hoever has puzzled some of the club’s fans.

Young players Harvey Elliott and Sepp van den Berg have been included in ‘List A’, which consists of 22 players who have not come through the club’s academy, whilst Trent Alexander-Arnold and Rhian Brewster are among the players in ‘List B’ – made up of homegrown players.

As a result, there is no space for the young defender, but several supporters of the Merseyside outfit believe Jurgen Klopp has made a mistake.

Hoever made his professional debut at the age of 16 in an FA Cup clash against Wolves, a game in which he gained a lot of plaudits. He is highly-rated by the staff at Liverpool and therefore fans believe it is a shame he has been overlooked in favour of newcomer van den Berg.

The Dutchman’s exclusion from the squad could mean that his young compatriot has overtaken him in the pecking order, and having seen Hoever feature for the first-team some fans are questioning why he has not been picked.

Here are the reactions from some confused Liverpool fans on Twitter.

Alan Shearer names two Newcastle men in his Team of the Week

The first thing to note is that the Match of the Day pundit has finally been able to give credit to his beloved Newcastle United after they beat Tottenham. Paul Dummett gets in at centre-back, while Steve Bruce is named as the manager despite the fact Shearer begged him not to take the job this summer.

Of course, you then have your usual suspects. Mohamed Salah is in after decimating David Luiz, David Silva gets a spot after assisting two strikes against Bournemouth, and Trent Alexander-Arnold is in at right-back after another excellent display from the England starlet.

Sebastien Haller got his first goals in a West Ham shirt, and he’s in the team after netting twice against Watford.

Newcastle fans blast Martin Atkinson appointment for Arsenal clash

[ad_pod ]

Martin Atkinson has been named as the referee for Newcastle United’s opening match of the 2019-20 Premier League season.

Indeed, Atkinson will be the man in the middle when the Magpies welcome Arsenal to St James’ Park on Sunday afternoon.

The experienced official also took charge of Newcastle’s league opener last season, when the Magpies suffered a 2-1 home loss to Tottenham Hotspur.

The 48-year-old also refereed the Community Shield between Manchester City and Liverpool on Sunday, which Pep Guardiola’s side won on penalties.

Atkinson – who will be assisted by the likes of Lee Betts and Constantine Hatzidakis on Tyneside – is a very, very experienced match official.

However, the news that he will be in charge of the clash between Newcastle and Arsenal has not gone down well with Magpies fans.

Indeed, many have taken to social media to blast the decision.

Everton target Nicolas Pepe’s underwhelming AFCON showings slightly concerning

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In Numbers series, which takes a statistical look at performances, season-long form and reported transfer targets…

As reported earlier in the week by The Telegraph, Everton are interested in signing Lille forward Nicolas Pepe.

The Ivory Coast international has spent his summer playing in Egypt at the Africa Cup of Nations with his country, but transfer speculation surrounding his future has gone crazy whilst he’s been away.

Liverpool and Inter Milan are said to be interested in signing the 24-year-old, who hit 22 Ligue 1 goals last term – only Kylian Mbappe scored more.

Check out some amazing tekkers in the video below…

It would reportedly take a club-record sum of £58.5m to lure Pepe to Goodison Park, which would be a real statement of intent from Marco Silva and the Toffees if they managed to get this one over the line.

Whilst his performances last season for Lille do more than enough to justify that price tag, his showings at the Africa Cup of Nations should slightly concern Everton in regards to splashing out such a huge fee for his services.

As you can see, he didn’t do too well for the Elephants at the tournament – and that’s being fairly generous to him.

Along with Sadio Mane, Kalidou Koulibaly, Wilfried Zaha and others, Pepe arrived at the tournament as one of the most exciting players for fans to keep an eye on – he let them down significantly though.

Pepe failed to score a goal or even set one up in his three appearances, all of which were starts.

In the Ivory Coast’s final game, the 6 foot forward was left on the bench as he watched his country crash out in the quarter-finals at the hands of Algeria, and wasn’t even substituted onto the field at any point.

Why he didn’t start remains to be seen, but Herve Renard clearly didn’t think that Pepe could be of use to him in the hugely important quarter-final tie, which tells you everything you need to know about how the Ivorian star fared throughout the tournament.

Of course, you can’t discount his phenomenal 2018/19 campaign with Lille for the sake of three international games, but there is reason for Everton to be slightly concerned by the £58.5m man’s flat performances.

West Ham fans gutted after latest Gomez twist

[ad_pod ]

West Ham United fans have been left gutted after Sky Sports reported that Maxi Gomez would not be joining the Hammers.

The Celta Vigo striker has been a target of the Irons for some time and Football FanCast sources understand that manager Manuel Pellegrini specifically requested the signing of the Uruguay international.

Director of Football Mario Husillos attempted to do a deal but there was a nagging feeling, per those sources, that Gomez wished to remain in Spain.

That has now seemingly been confirmed, with Sky Sports claiming that he will complete a switch to Valencia in the coming days instead of making the move to east London.

The news comes as a significant blow after reports also claimed that Salomon Rondon, who was the subject of a bid from the Irons earlier this summer, would likely be moving to China.

Add to that the fact that Aleksandar Mitrovic, a target at the beginning of the transfer window, has signed a new contract at Fulham and it all adds up to a rather beleaguered picture for Irons fans.

They have been left with just Javier Hernandez and Jordan Hugill as their striking options ahead of the 2019/20 season.

And fans have been quick to vent their displeasure on Twitter after Sky’s latest update, with many aiming their fury towards co-owners David Gold and David Sullivan.

Perfect partners: Roberto Firmino’s most prolific partners at Liverpool

[ad_pod ]

Since he signed for Liverpool in 2015, Roberto Firmino has morphed and evolved into a unique centre-forward, harnessing the responsibility of spearheading one of the most terrifying attacking trios in world football.

The Brazilian has blossomed into an attacker who loves to drop deep to influence the game, and that style has allowed players around him to flourish.

But who has been the striker’s most prolific partner in the Liverpool squad during his time on Merseyside?

Mohamed Salah – 18 goal contributions

It’s unsurprising to see Mohamed Salah as Firmino’s most prolific partner at Liverpool.

After their first game together it became clear that the duo would be two driving forces behind the club’s future success.

The two stars assisted one another in their first game together in a 3-3 draw against Watford, and both have since been essential players in Liverpool’s electric attacking front-three.

James Milner – 14 goal contributions

James Milner has often been an underrated talent since moving to Liverpool, and an unexpected side effect of the midfielder joining the Reds has been his budding relationship with Firmino.

The duo have combined 14 times on the pitch, with goals against Arsenal and Manchester City part of Firmino and Milner’s hit list over the past four seasons.

Sadio Mane – 14 goal contributions

Completing the attacking trio is Sadio Mane, and while the former Southampton man and Firmino have played together longer, they have not been as prolific as the Firmino/Salah dynamic.

The two attackers have combined to score some of the club’s most important goals in the past few seasons, including a vital away goal against Roma in the 2017/18 Champions League semi-final, as well as two goals in a 3-1 win against Arsenal in the 2016/17 Premier League season.

Jordan Henderson – 6 goal contributions

Scoring against your former team can be painful and Firmino experienced it first-hand when the striker scored against Hoffenheim in a Champions League qualifying game, with Jordan Henderson assisting the Brazilian.

The duo have linked up six times during their time together at Liverpool, with their most important contribution of late being Henderson’s goal against Southampton that rallied the club for their late title surge.

Adam Lallana – 5 goal contributions

One quick-fire way to assert yourself as a fan favourite at Anfield is to score against Manchester United, and Firmino did just that with the help of Adam Lallana, who struck up a good relationship with the new recruit during his maiden campaign.

The duo combined four times in Firmino’s debut season in England but only once after that as injuries and a dip in form damaged Lallana’s first-team opportunities.

Arsenal: Samuel Umtiti can be the perfect Koscielny replacement

Laurent Koscielny’s been a great servant to Arsenal, but it’s time he moved on. Indeed, if Unai Emery can sign Samuel Umtiti, he’d transform the Gunners’ defence completely.

The 25-year-old Barcelona centre-back has been linked to Arsenal by L’Equipe (via Sport Witness), who claim Emery is considering bringing the Frenchman to North London. Well, if he came, he’d make Arsenal’s back-line so much more difficult to break down.

This season, the likes of Shkodran Mustafi have made the Gunners’ defence into a laughing stock. They’ve conceded more goals than each of the four teams in front of them and 11 more than arch-rivals Spurs. Frankly, it’s been a woeful season at the back.

Koscielny’s too old now, and it’s time for a younger, stronger central defender to step up. Now, that man can be Umtiti. Indeed, he’s still young too and that means he could be part of a defence that challenges for the title over the next seven or eight years.

He’s played just 15 games this season for Barcelona and hasn’t proved the quality that many thought he’d show over the last three campaigns since signing from Lyon for £22.5m. That’s ideal for Arsenal though, because it could mean they get their chance to unlock his talent instead.

Umtiti is the kind of player who could completely transform the Gunners’ defence, with the ability to keep things tight and play out from the back. He’s built like a brick wall and his pace makes him almost impossible to get past, so bringing him into the Gunners’ weak defence would be huge.

He’s got a contract until 2023 and is valued on Transfermarkt at £63m, so he won’t be cheap. Arsenal will need to splash the cash if they’re to secure their man, but it’ll be worth it if he can plug the leaky defence and be their long-term Koscielny replacement.

Arsenal may have found their man, but whether the board will allow Emery to chase him or not remains to be seen.

"What exactly are these positives?" – Arsenal fans fume at hollow words

[ad_pod ]

Arsenal fans have been left angered and appalled by the club’s powerbrokers after Managing Director Vinai Vekatesham and Director of Football Raul Sanllehi sent out a rallying cry to the Gunners’ staff in the wake of the demoralising defeat to Chelsea in the Europa League final.

Unable to halt the effervescent Eden Hazard, Arsenal were torn asunder as the Belgian added a brace to second-half strikes from Olivier Giroud and Pedro to complete the crushing 4-1 defeat in Baku.

The final disappointment comes after a brutally cataclysmic last few weeks of the season derailed an otherwise positive debut campaign for Unai Emery in north London.

The Gunners won just one of their last five Premier League matches to miss out on a top-four finish while defeat to Chelsea ensured that the club will be playing Europa League football next season.

With expensive flops eating valuable funds, a minuscule transfer budget and a lack of Champions League football, Arsenal supporters are not feeling very excited about the club’s future and many took great offence at the email which claimed there is “much to be positive about.”

Transfer Focus: Sheffield Wednesday’s pursuit of Macauley Bonne shows a new policy

[ad_pod ]

According to talkSPORT, Sheffield Wednesday are interested in bringing Macauley Bonne to the club this summer.

The 23-year-old has enjoyed a fantastic season at Leyton Orient netting 23 goals in the National League, and his arrival at Hillsborough could signify a new policy at the Owls.

Bonne’s season

The Zimbabwe international has proven over the last two years that he is one of the most potent attackers outside of the EFL.

This season he found the back of the net more than 20 times for the second season running, so he clearly knows where the net is.

Of course, it is a big step up from the fifth tier of English football to the Championship, but it has been proven in recent years that it can be done.

Andre Gray and Jamie Vardy have both been top scorers in Non-League in recent years, and multiple other Championship level strikers have come through the lower divisions.

The likes of Lee Gregory, Jack Marriot and Dwight Gayle have all cut their teeth outside of the EFL before making big impacts in the higher divisions, and Bonne could be next on that list.

A new approach

Sheffield Wednesday have had problems with their strikers over the past few years. Big-money and experienced signings Jordan Rhodes, Gary Hooper and Steven Fletcher have all failed to meet lofty expectations, so it appears they are testing a new approach.

The Yorkshire club have wasted boatloads of money on these ‘tried and tested’ Championship hitmen who have failed to score regularly for the Owls, and it seems as if they are moving towards a new system where they try to create new stars rather than buying from their rivals at inflated fees.

Who would make a combined Sheffield XI? Ingood Nick makes his picks in the video below…

Bonne could be the first player the Yorkshire club test this new system on. With Hooper already leaving and Rhodes seemingly having one foot out the door, there is a gap for a new striker, and Bonne could be the man to step in.
