Pakistan pick four uncapped players for New Zealand ODIs

Mohammad Haris, Mohammad Wasim, Shahnawaz Dahani and Zahid Mahmood are all in line to make their 50-over debuts

ESPNcricinfo staff01-Sep-2021Pakistan have named four uncapped players – Mohammad Haris, Mohammad Wasim, Shahnawaz Dahani and Zahid Mahmood – in their 20-member squad for the three-match home ODI series against New Zealand.Iftikhar Ahmed and Khushdil Shah have been recalled while Salman Ali Agha, Sarfaraz Ahmed and Sohaib Maqsood, who were part of the ODI series against England in July have been dropped. Haris Sohail, who withdrew from that series having sustained a hamstring injury, has also been left out.Related

“The series against New Zealand is extremely important for Pakistan as the matches are part of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 qualification,” chief selector Mohammad Wasim said. “While we have tried to put together a formidable and a balanced unit, we have continued to ensure that we give opportunities to high performing players while looking into the future so that we can develop a strong bench-strength.”Wicketkeeper-batter Haris was impressive in the 50-over domestic Pakistan Cup, where he made 289 runs in nine matches playing for champions Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, at an average of 41.28, making a century and two fifties. Fast bowler Wasim, who made his Pakistan debut in the T20I series against West Indies recently, has now earned a call-up to the ODI squad too. He was particularly impressive in the first T20I where he picked up one wicket in two overs in the rained-out encounter.”Mohammad Rizwan remains the first-choice wicketkeeper, as such, it has been decided to include 20-year-old Mohammad Haris in place of Sarfaraz Ahmed. This is not only to reward Haris for his outstanding domestic performances in the previous season, but also to give him a taste and flair of international cricket along with its rigours and demands and to ensure that we continue to groom young wicketkeepers who are fit and ready to step up when the opportunity presents itself.”ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Legspinner Mahmood has been outstanding in the domestic circuit for Southern Punjab over the last two seasons. In 2020-21, he picked up 52 wickets in 10 matches in the first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy and 19 wickets in 10 matches in the Pakistan Cup. He was called up to the Pakistan squad for the T20Is against South Africa earlier this year, and in the solitary match he played, he picked up three wickets in his four overs.Dahani had a dream debut season in PSL 2021, taking 20 wickets in 11 matches. He seems to have impressed the selectors with his ability to provide breakthroughs in regular intervals, which also made him Multan Sultans’ trump card in the tournament.Meanwhile, Iftikhar returns to the ODI set-up for the first time since the Super Over encounter against Zimbabwe in November 2020 in Rawalpindi. Khushdil’s only ODI appearance was also in the same match.”Middle-order has remained our concern and, as such, after trying a few options, we have decided to give another run to Iftikhar Ahmed and Khushdil Shah,” Wasim said. “The two batters have played sufficient 50-over cricket at the domestic level and boast the required firepower to utilise the slog overs. We are optimistic they will come good in home conditions.”This will be New Zealand first tour of Pakistan in 18 years. The tour starts with three ODIs in Rawalpindi scheduled on September 17, 19 and 21 and culminates with five T20Is in Lahore. Crowds up to 25% capacity will also be allowed in the stadium, which means the ODIs taking place in Rawalpindi will be open to 4500 spectators each.

Jayawardene hails 'confident' Perera

Mahela Jayawardene said the struggles of the debutant Isuru Udana turned out to be a blessing in disguise as his replacement, Thisara Perera, altered the course of the game

Abhishek Purohit in Hambantota24-Jul-2012Isuru Udana, the left-arm fast bowler, had a forgettable ODI debut. His opening over contained five wides and two boundaries and went for 16. It was also the over that was to completely alter the course of the game. With India racing to 31 for 0 in three overs and Udana struggling to cope with the stiff breeze across the ground, Mahela Jayawardene handed the ball to Thisara Perera in the fourth. Perera started with three wicket-maidens taking out Virender Sehwag, Virat Kohli and Suresh Raina in each. Three successive wicket-maidens. Almost unbelievable. He could have had a double-wicket maiden but for a dropped catch. Almost ridiculous. India managed 138.Jayawardene said Udana’s waywardness turned out to be a blessing in disguise for Sri Lanka. “Isuru strayed all over the place in the first over,” Jayawardene said. “I felt he was a bit too nervous trying to fight with the wind. He bowled really well at practice yesterday.”The other experienced bowlers I had were Thisara and Angelo [Mathews] so I just gave him the ball because the other day he bowled well from that end and did the job for us. He’s improved quite a bit in confidence and I think the consistency is the most important thing which he is striving for. He’s been consistent for us in the last six months to one year. Every day he keeps improving and he is putting his hand up to play Test cricket as well.”Increasingly, there is hardly anything that Perera cannot pull off on a cricket field. He slams sixes so effectively that he has already been compared to Lance Klusener and Shahid Afridi, by no less than his coach and captain respectively. Increasingly, defending sides, even if they are ahead, don’t feel a total is safe against Sri Lanka till Perera is dismissed.Increasingly, he is turning out to be that deceptive kind of bowler who can seem innocuous as he runs in, but can easily run through sides. He already has a six-for in ODIs. And he is a big asset in the field. Sehwag fell to the latter quality today, as Perera hung on to an acrobatic return catch. There was not much swing in the air, but Perera bowled a difficult length, got bounce with his height, and managed some seam movement. Just enough to take Kohli’s and Raina’s edges.Perera is having a memorable 2012. He has won games with his batting and bowling, he was Player of the Series in the ODIs against Pakistan and he has shared the new ball in a Test. What has done the trick for him? Tips from Shaun Pollock, the former South Africa fast bowler and Mumbai Indians’ bowling coach.”I think he is a good learner but I will be correct if I say he has worked closely with Shaun Pollock on his action during the IPL time because he wasn’t playing much,” Jayawardene said. “Polly has given him some good tips with his action. Polly is a great bowler to discuss those kinds of things with. I think [it is] a great opportunity for him so with that and with fast-bowling coaches he has been working hard to get his pace, to get his accuracy.”Something that he lacked was accuracy in hitting the seam in that good area. He is a tall boy. If he can hit that good area he is always going to create opportunities so I think that’s been the change and at practices he is with the ball doing something or with the bat, batting nets, throw downs. He wants to learn so good to see young guys doing that.”Perera said Pollock had asked him to be more upright in his delivery stride so that he could put more force into his bowling and hit the seam with more control. As Jayawardene said, “The IPL sometimes does help some of the players.”

Do Delhi have big-match temperament?

ESPNcricinfo previews the IPL qualifier match between Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Daredevils in Chennai

The Preview by Siddarth Ravindran24-May-2012Match factsFriday, May 25, 2012
Start time 2000 (1430 GMT)Mahela Jayawardene will be looking to raise his game for the big occasion•AFPBig PictureVirender Sehwag and Delhi Daredevils are in a familiar position. Like this year, they had utterly dominated the 2009 season, before their mighty batting line-up faltered in the semi-final, much like their flop against Kolkata Knight Riders on Tuesday. This time though, with the changed format, they get a second opportunity. One of Daredevils’ puzzling decisions in the game against Knight Riders was to send in Ross Taylor as low as No. 7, below even teenager Pawan Negi, who is in the side primarily as a left-arm spinner and isn’t known for his batting exploits. TA Sekar, Daredevils’ team mentor, said the team had reassessed its batting order the game; so Taylor can expect to bat at a more customary position on Friday.Chennai Super Kings are also in a familiar position. Once again, they seem to be at their best in the final stages of the tournament. After several days of nervously watching other teams’ results go their way, Super Kings looked unstoppable when they took apart Mumbai Indians on Wednesday. They have always looked like the team with the greatest depth in their batting, and that was amply demonstrated against Mumbai Indians. Even after losing M Vijay and the IPL’s highest run-scorer Suresh Raina as early as the second over, their crisis men Michael Hussey and S Badrinath stabilised the innings, before the flamboyance of MS Dhoni and Dwayne Bravo switched the innings mode from build to blast. Even without using the heavy-hitting of Albie Morkel, even against the bowling of Lasith Malinga, Super Kings ran up 187 and coasted to victory. The trouble for Super Kings is that they need to bring their A game three times in five days, to beat each of other three playoff teams, if they are to make it a hat-trick of titles. They have done it once. Can they do it a second time on Friday?Form guide (most recent first)
Chennai Super Kings: WLWWW
Delhi Daredevils: LWLWLPlayers to watchIn five years of the IPL, Mahela Jayawardene is yet to win a playoff match. He’s only had two chances: once in 2008, when Kings XI Punjab were thrashed by Super Kings, and then the defeat to Knight Riders earlier this week. In addition, his form this season hasn’t matched the high standard expected of him. In successive World Cups, Jayawardene has shown his ability to lift his game for the big occasion, something Daredevils would love him to do over the next three days.Ben Hilfenhaus has taken over from Doug Bollinger as Super Kings’ Australian fast bowler of choice. He’s played seven matches since his arrival from the West Indies, and hasn’t gone wicketless even once. After Dwayne Smith clubbed a succession of boundaries off Hilfenhaus to steal a last-ball victory, Hilfenhaus showed his temperament by bouncing back with consecutive Man-of-the-Match performances. Besides the outswinger which serves him well even in the longer formats, he has a quick bouncer, an accurate yorker and he likes to bowl full and wide to stifle batsmen. He accounted for both Sehwag and David Warner in the last game against Daredevils. Can he do it again?Team combinationSuper Kings don’t like to tinker with their team composition, re-securing their core players even during the re-shuffle before the 2011 season. They have used only 17 players this year, the least by a franchise, showing how much they like a settled side. After Shadab Jakati’s tight spell in the previous game with the new ball, expect him to retain his place. The only question for them is whether to retain M Vijay, or to pick S Anirudha if he is fit.Daredevils will have to ponder whether to play an extra spinner in Chennai, or stick to their preferred pace-heavy attack. Irfan Pathan had injured his hand while attempting a return catch in the game against Knight Riders, but team mentor Sekar said Irfan was fit to play on Friday.Meetings this seasonBoth encounters this season have been one-sided: Daredevils won by eight wickets at the Kotla after four run-outs undermined Super Kings, and less than two weeks ago Hilfenhaus ran through the Daredevils top order to set up a straightforward nine-wicket* victory at Chepauk.Stats and trivia Suresh Raina has scored only 341 runs this season, his lowest tally in any IPL Morne Morkel is three wickets away from equalling Malinga’s record of 28 wickets in an IPL season For stats on Super Kings’ spinners’ struggles at home, click hereQuotes”We have a team that is better suited to the conditions in Chennai. We have seamers who are adequate but not startling.”

“Ross got a 21-ball fifty against Royal Challengers in Bangalore. He showed his class there and I think he is in a good space and I think he should fire tomorrow.”

'Levi set the base for us' – de Villiers

Levi wore his country’s colours for the first time in Christchurch to play a tour match against Canterbury in the name of Earthquake Relief. It was not exactly the big debut he could have got but he made it count with a blistering 63 off 32 balls

Richard Levi’s innings was speedy and sensational•Getty Images

When Richard Levi was first picked in a South African squad he looked likely to play his first match on his home ground, Newlands, against Australia. It would have been a dream debut but it did not happen. Levi occupied a spot in the dug-out for both matches in the series while Graeme Smith kept his place at the top.It seemed a waste of a promising young talent, similar to what Rusty Theron experienced at the World Twenty20 in the West Indies in 2010, when he was included in the squad and did not play a single match. Eventually, Levi got his chance but in an almost entirely different environment.Levi wore his country’s colours for the first time in Christchurch to play a tour match against Canterbury in the name of Earthquake Relief. It was not exactly the big debut he could have got but he made it count with a blistering 63 off 32 balls. That his innings was speedy and sensational was expected, that he would score more runs than the No. 3 to 8 batsmen put together was not. Without Levi’s knock, South Africa would not have come close to AB de Villiers’ target of “at least 160″. Even with it, they fell 10 short but it proved enough to beat the hosts in a competitive warm-up for South Africa’s new-look Twenty20 side.”Richard Levi played unbelievably well,” de Villiers said. “He set the base for us and we didn’t cash in.” Levi drove and smacked the ball square with authority, bringing up his half-century at a strike-rate of over 200. He could have gone on to score many more had he not backed away to the legside before coming in to play a shot and missing completely.Still, the opposition were impressed with Levi’s strength and self-assurance and even offered him a pointer for how teams may target him in future. “He looked like he can hit the ball pretty hard,” Peter Fulton, Canterbury opening batsmen said. “Against New Zealand, in the real stuff, he might get a few round his ears to test him out because didn’t see too much of him off the back foot. But, there’s no doubt he can strike the ball and if you bowl in his areas, he is certainly going to hit you.”The rest of South Africa’s batting did not make that much of an impression as they struggled against disciplined spin bowling from Canterbury. “It’s all about losing wickets. We lost a couple of wickets at the wrong time,” de Villiers said. “The spinners really pulled it back nicely for them and we just couldn’t find a base after that.”Colin Ingram, who has yet to find his feet after being recalled last month, de Villiers and Hashim Amla were all dismissed in the space of three overs, leaving South Africa’s middle order struggling with a familiar softness. “We had to rebuild after that and that took a bit of time. It’s tough to find your feet in this game [Twenty20 cricket], it happens so quickly,” de Villiers said. The bowlers did not suffer from any of the same rustiness. They had Canterbury all but drowned out at 39 for 6 and even power-hitting from Matt McEwan and Matt Henry could not do enough to take them over the line. To have been pushed all the way was something de Villiers was pleased with, saying it allowed South Africa to assess where they are, even though it was only a Twenty20. “It’s a televised game and you don’t want to lose to a domestic team in a televised game, your first game away from home and your first game of the tour,” he said. “We had to do the basics really well. I thought we did it alright, not exceptionally well but it was a good start for us on this trip.”The upcoming series against New Zealand is expected to be a competitive and closely fought one and de Villiers said South Africa are preparing for a tough opposition. “New Zealand are an amazing cricket team. At home they really know their conditions extremely well,” he said. “It’s going to be tough for us to get on top and when we do get on top, the secret is to cash in. That’s going to be key, especially away from home.”

Northamptonshire win after fine recovery

Johan Botha’s best Twenty20 bowling figures helped Northamptonshire to a 40-run win which ended Warwickshire’s unbeaten start

05-Jun-2011
ScorecardJohan Botha’s best Twenty20 bowling figures helped Northamptonshire to a 40-run win which ended Warwickshire’s unbeaten start to their Friends Life t20 campaign at Edgbaston. The South Africa off-spinner took 4 for 16, including two wickets in his first over, as Warwickshire were dismissed for 110, their lowest Twenty20 total.Botha found a slow pitch, on which Warwickshire’s New Zealand off-spinner Jeetan Patel had taken three for 19, to his liking and he stifled Warwickshire’s chase as they tried to keep up with the Duckworth Lewis rate as steady rain threatened to curtail their innings.Botha may have taken the individual honours but the fact that Northamptonshire reached 150 for 8 and had a total to defend in the first place was due to Jack Brooks and David Willey, who shared a Twenty20 world record-equalling ninth-wicket stand of 59.Northamptonshire were in danger of being dismissed for under 100 when they limped to 91 for 8, but Brooks and Willey rode their luck to equal the record stand of Lancashire’s Glen Chapple and Peter Martin at Leicester in 2003.Brooks, who had made only seven runs in the competition before this innings, struck out boldly and lifted Neil Carter for a straight six in his breezy unbeaten 33 from just 19 balls.Left-hander Willey also lifted Carter for six over long on in making 22 from 15 balls which helped Northamptonshire recover after they had struggled against Patel and seamer Steffan Piolet, whose three for 25 constituted competition-best figures. Piolet took two wickets in his first four balls including Alex Wakely, who was lbw working to leg after he had clobbered six fours in his 35.Warwickshire’s response was timid and they ran into trouble against Botha after Carter was run out trying to take two to Chaminda Vaas at short third man. William Porterfield, who made half centuries in the wins over Durham and Yorkshire, carved to point and Warwickshire captain Jim Troughton went lbw in Botha’s first over.Botha then snared Darren Maddy and Varun Chopra playing across the line and Hall ended a mini-revival by bowling Keith Barker and Tim Ambrose, whose seventh-wicket partnership of 23 was the best of the innings, in the space of four balls.

Mills defends Guardiola over Kyle Walker

talkSPORT pundit Danny Mills has backed Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola for his decision to field Kyle Walker in the club’s recent Champions League semi-final.

The Lowdown: Surprise return for Walker

The 31-year-old sustained a serious ankle injury in the Sky Blues’ Champions League quarter-final against Atletico Madrid last month, and it was unknown whether he would be able to feature again before the end of the season.

However, the right-back was deemed fit enough to be involved in the matchday squad against Real Madrid last Wednesday and was even named in the starting XI, where he managed to play through his injury for 72 minutes before being replaced by Oleksandr Zinchenko.

Walker’s withdrawal soon lead to a collapse in the final stages of the game, though, as City crashed out of the competition following a 6-5 aggregate defeat, just going to show how influential he can be.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/man-city-newest-updates/” title=”Man City newest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: Mills defends Guardiola

Speaking to Football Insider, Mills defended Guardiola’s choice to opt for the 65-cap England international despite his recent injury layoff.

The former City right-back said: “Pep had to take that risk with Walker to try and get City into the final.

“And it worked out. They were goals up at that point and cruising. Zinchenko comes on and Real Madrid score two – whether that’s a coincidence, who knows.

“There was nothing wrong with the game plan whatsoever. When you’re two goals up with just injury time left to play – you can’t fault Guardiola and the way Man City played.

“The penalty took all the wind out of the sails in extra time – and that’s when it comes down to fighting spirit and hunger, and Real Madrid just had their tails up and they were able to run down the clock.”

The Verdict: A valuable player to Man City

The £150k-per-week Walker is an absolute rock at the heart of the City defence, currently averaging a pass success rate of 90.3% in the Premier League (via WhoScored), showing his ability and calmness to play out from the back. He has also completed 3.8 long balls per 90 minutes, proving that he can be just as effective in providing service for the strikers at the top end of the pitch.

Walker was once dubbed an “utterly brilliant” player by Match of the Day host Gary Lineker, and it was evident to see the difference in performance levels from before and after he was forced off the field at the Bernabeu last week.

Guardiola will no doubt be hoping that this injury setback isn’t too much of a concern so that he can have the 31-year-old available for selection again sooner rather than later to try and help his team get their hands on the Premier League trophy once more in a couple of weeks’ time.

-Grande jogador.
