Raul Jimenez: Wolves can find ideal heir in Gaetan Laborde

When Raul Jimenez suffered a fractured skull against Arsenal last month, everyone at Wolves feared the worst.

Their star man was now out injured for a prolonged period of time and the player they had to rely on instead was just 18 years of age.

What’s the word?

The transfer window has come just at the right time for Wolves who are searching for reinforcements in the market, namely in attacking positions.

According to Eurosport FR (via Get Football News France) Jeff Shi and his recruitment team are eyeing up a move for Montpellier forward Gaetan Laborde.

They face competition from two unnamed Bundesliga clubs in a bid to sign him. Per Transfermarkt, the 26-year-old is valued at around £11.7m. Thus, a sizable fee seems unlikely.

His wages are also far from astronomical. Laborde earns £23k-per-week in Ligue 1, so this shouldn’t be a deal that sets Wolves back very much.

Ideal for Nuno

Laborde is far from a household name, particularly in English football, but he’d be an exceptional investment for a side who need cover for Jimenez.

When you look at the Frenchman, he plays in a very similar way to Wolves’ number 9 and that’s not just in terms of his goals.

The 6-foot striker – who stands just three inches smaller than Jimenez – is a commanding force in the air and has won a mammoth 70 aerial duels this season – 3.9 a match. Considering he’s of lesser stature than the Mexican, he’s actually more dominant in that part of the game. For context, Jimenez has only won 1.5 battles in the air a game.

That isn’t the only thing Laborde offers though. Like his potential new teammate, he is adept at bringing others into play and has five assists to go with his six goals in Ligue 1 this term.

A big part of Jimenez’s game is that he can hold the ball up and utilise others well, something that Laborde does to near perfection.

A cut-price option in January, the Montpellier forward looks like a handy player and would undoubtedly add valuable depth to Wolves’ frontline.

Jarrod Bowen: West Ham winger key to David Moyes beating Aston Villa

Jarrod Bowen will be key to David Moyes guiding West Ham United to victory over Aston Villa in Monday night’s Premier League clash at the London Stadium.

Moyes has called on Bowen to start all nine of the Hammers’ top-flight fixtures thus far this season, but is yet to see the 23-year-old strike home his fourth goal having now gone five games without finding the back of the net.

The Leominster-born winger hasn’t registered his first assist of the campaign, either, despite providing a creative masterclass in victory over Sheffield United last time out with a joint-game high three key passes.

Bowen is among West Ham’s most important forward men this term thanks to his unbroken involvement in their Premier League fixtures, with the former Hull City ace signed in January for £22million ranking joint with Tomas Soucek for most shots taken (20) by an Irons player, per WhoScored.

Yet Bowen only ranks fifth for efforts directed on target with just five to his name and ranks seventh for key passes with six recorded to date. Defender Arthur Masuaku (21) and midfielder Declan Rice (11) even have a higher number of successful dribbles than the £96,154-per-week attacker (8).

Moyes will certainly need to see Bowen match the level of his performance against Sheffield United, rather than his previous displays, when West Ham host Aston Villa on Monday night. But the Scot will need to see the 5 ft 8 maestro offer more than just creativity.

Bowen, who Hull boss Grant McCann lauds as an “exceptional talent” who is “unplayable” on his day, will have his work cut out should he start against Aston Villa, as Dean Smith’s outfit are among the Premier League’s most one-sided outfits.

The Villans average 42% of their attacking moves on the left-hand side of the field, sacrificing central play (25%) to spread the ball wide to the likes of influential captain Jack Grealish and their overlapping full-back, Matt Targett.

Villa’s preference to focus their advances to one side of the field has also aided Smith’s men in becoming one of the top-flight’s most dominant attacks, with 33% of their actions registered in the opposition’s defensive third.

Bowen has not proven himself adept in aiding Vladimir Coufal defensively this term with just 0.9 tackles, 0.3 interceptions and 0.2 clearances per league game, while winning possession 0.7 times and being dribbled past 0.8 times, per SofaScore.

But Moyes will need to see the 23-year-old add another side to his game if West Ham are to beat Aston Villa on Monday, regardless of whether or not Michail Antonio makes his return from a hamstring injury.

AND in other news, a pundit has exclusively claimed a 26-year-old ace would have been a “very good” West Ham signing.

Forget Grealish: Wolves should be more worried about Villa star Ollie Watkins

After falling to a heavy defeat last time out, Wolves no doubt will be itching to put things right when they take on Aston Villa in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side were thrashed 4-0 at Anfield, and it was a far cry from the superb win they had pulled off against Arsenal at the Emirates almost a week earlier.

And whilst Villa appear to have hit a brick wall in recent weeks, tasting back-to-back defeats, Wolves shouldn’t be taking things for granted when they take them on at Molineux.

Hilariously obscure Premier League players – Can you name them all?

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

Jack Grealish will surely be the main topic of conversation in Nuno’s pre-match briefings to his players, and rightly so given the England international’s exploits this season – he’s managed an impressive five goals and six assists in just nine Premier League games.

But whilst the Villa talisman will need to be kept in check by the home side’s defence, there’s one man who they can’t afford to take their eye off either: Ollie Watkins.

Since arriving from Brentford in the summer, the £27m-rated ace has been in fine form for his new side, bagging eight goals in 12 games in total.

Described as someone who had “real superpowers” as a teenager, Watkins has blossomed into a fine central striker, and has the kind of work ethic and energy that Wolves fans will no doubt appreciate given their own Raul Jimenez.

The programme director at his former club Brentford, Chris Deacon, told The Athletic: “Ollie transformed himself into a physical specimen. We’d call him a machine because it looked like he would set himself into third gear and then cruise along at the front while everyone else was blowing.”

If Wolves are to take home all three points on Saturday, then they will have to be disciplined and tight at the back, and keep Watkins in check for the entire 90 minutes.

Meanwhile, Wolves could ease their Raul Jimenez woes with a swoop for this exciting talent.

Jannik Vestergaard comments on Southampton duo should excite fans

The Southampton union was split up last night as Denmark and England locked horns in their latest international performances. Jannik Vestergaard came off the bench for the Danes, who enjoyed a slim 1-0 victory over an unsteady looking Gareth Southgate side.

The Three Lions picked up a startling two red cards as Harry Maguire and Reece James were given their marching orders. Saints stars Danny Ings and James Ward-Prowse didn’t make it off the bench for England, despite the game crying out for some creative play.

However, their skills haven’t gone unnoticed and Vestergaard has lauded his south coast teammates for their influence on the club. Speaking to Goal.com, the centre-back praised Ings’ huge goal tally from last season – finishing just one goal shy of Jamie Vardy’s Golden Boot winning amount.

A winning formula for Southampton

“I am always madly impressed by his nose for goals – he can sniff them up out of nothing,” Vestergaard said. “He is an amazing player to have in your team and a fantastic person as well.”

Indeed, the former Liverpool man has been a dream signing for Ralph Hasenhuttl. Ings bagged 22 goals in 38 Premier League appearances last season and has already burst out of the blocks this term, netting three goals in four (via Transfermarkt).

Similarly, Ward-Prowse was hailed for his work ethic, with Vestergaard boldly tipping him to have unmatched free-kick skills. “What an engine Ward-Prowse has got! It just never runs out of fuel during games – he is so hard-working for the team,” the 28-year-old said before going on to state that he sees his teammates as close friends of his.

This clear tight-knit chemistry Hasenhuttl’s team has could be key for driving Southampton up the table this season. The duo – both valued at £18million by Transfermarkt – may play a huge part in ensuring the Saints secure a top ten finish at the end of this campaign.

In other news, Theo Walcott comments could see exciting partnership between him and Kyle Walker-Peters…

Glasgow Rangers: Gers set to miss out on Terem Moffi

According to Football Insider, Glasgow Rangers are set to lose out on Terem Moffi as Lorient have had a bid accepted for the striker.

The Gers were linked to the 21-year-old (Score Nigeria via The Boot Room), who only made the move to current club KV Kortijk for £135,000 in January, but it looks as though French side Lorient will now be his next destination.

They have reportedly had a bid of £7.3m accepted for the Nigerian, who is also said to have agreed personal terms.

Moffi has been in terrific form ever since he moved to FK Riteriai in Lithuania. He managed 20 goals in 31 games there before making the move to Belgium, and he has five in 11 so far with his current club, with him having scored once in two matches this term.

At the moment, the striker situation at Ibrox remains unclear. Alfredo Morelos is still at the club as the transfer deadline approaches, but there is still time for him to depart, whilst Kemar Roofe is currently injured, something that has been a problem in recent years. The Gers could arguably do with another striker just to be safe, but it looks like Moffi will not be that man.

Back to the drawing board for Steven Gerrard and Ross Wilson, it seems.

Aston Villa: Fans react as Said Benrahma transfer links re-emerge

Many Aston Villa fans have reacted to a further transfer report linking Brentford’s Said Benrahma with a move to Villa Park.

Claret and Blue manager Dean Smith has made some improvements to his squad this summer which include the signing of Ollie Watkins from the Bees.

Raiding his former club with the view to improve his attacking setup, Smith is also said to be interested in sealing a deal to sign Benrahma, who largely impressed last term.

The 24-year-old Algerian was one of the most prolific attackers in English football in the 2019/20 season, contributing with 17 goals and nine assists in his 43 appearances.

Villa’s interest was recently discussed by a report which also claimed that Brentford were due to make a decision on the winger’s future, and that has now been followed up by a similar report which calls on Smith to make a move.

Reacting to the continuing transfer story, these Villa fans gave their opinions on the potential arrival of Benrahma…
