Durham close in on victory despite fightback

Half-centuries by Vikram Solanki and Moeen Ali kept Durham waiting for victory in the County Championship clash with Division One strugglers Worcestershire at New Road

20-May-2011ScorecardHalf-centuries by Vikram Solanki and Moeen Ali kept Durham waiting for victory in the County Championship clash with Division One strugglers Worcestershire at New Road. Following on 370 behind after losing their last four first-innings wickets before lunch, the home side showed more application as they took the game into a fourth day by making 271 for 5 at the second attempt.Steve Harmison claimed 4 for 67 in Worcestershire’s initial dismissal for 217, but Durham were careful to use the former England fast bowler sparingly in his first match since breaking an arm in the season’s opening fixture against Hampshire at the Rose Bowl. His morning stint was a shade costly as he bowled to attacking field settings and his one success came when Gareth Andrew gave a leg-side catch to wicketkeeper Phil Mustard after hitting six fours in a brisk 27. It was left to Ben Stokes and Ruel Braithwaite to clear up lingering resistance from Ben Scott (37) and Damien Wright (27), who clouted 13 boundaries between them and took only seven overs to put on 51.Overnight batsman Adrian Shankar was forced to retire after a mishap during Worcestershire’s early-morning fielding drills. Reaching down to pick up a ball, the former Lancashire Second XI batsman collapsed in pain with a knee injury. He was carried off on a stretcher and he went to hospital for x-rays and will be sent for a scan on Monday.Worcestershire made better progress in their second innings, negotiating three overs from Harmison before lunch and then pressing on when he was rested throughout out the afternoon session. New opening pair James Cameron (20) and Matt Pardoe (38) completed their second half-century stand in four innings and then fell to Ian Blackwell during a prolonged spell by the left-arm spinner. Both were caught close to the wicket but Michael Di Venuto, having held a chance from Cameron, later dropped Solanki at second slip when the former England one-day opener had made only 12. It proved to a costly miss as Solanki found his best form with 10 boundaries in making 58 from 78 balls – his third half-century in the championship since giving up the captaincy last August. The appearance of Harmison after tea secured the breakthrough that Durham needed when he hit the stumps twice in a seven-over spell. His ninth delivery zipped past another flashing drive by Solanki and Alexei Kervezee was also trying to force the pace when he played on.Moeen played equally well with a dozen fours in a stylish 63 but all of the front-line batting had gone when he was caught behind the wicket off Stokes. Any danger of a defeat in three days was averted when Andrew (33 not out) and Scott (30 not out) held up Durham for a second time with an unbroken partnership of 55.

Zaheer strike turned match – Dhoni

MS Dhoni, the India captain, identified Zaheer Khan’s dismissal of Devon Smith in the first over of his second spell as the turning point of the match at Chepauk. Zaheer had only bowled two overs in his first spell and was, presumably, being saved for when the ball got a bit older and reverse-swing came into play. He struck with the older ball, in the 31st over, with a slower ball that bowled Smith, who had anchored West Indies’ chase with a well-compiled 81.”The game really changed once Zaheer gave us the breakthrough; until then Devon was batting really well,” Dhoni said at the post-match presentation. “After that we could apply pressure from both ends, and eventually we got more wickets than we needed and we seized the game in the end.”Prior to Zaheer’s strike, West Indies had eased their way to 154 for 2 with first Darren Bravo and then Ramnaresh Sarwan building fifty partnerships with Smith. The game seemed to be slipping away from India, but the fall of Smith’s wicket allowed Dhoni to attack – at one point he had three close-in fielders for Harbhajan Singh – and West Indies crumbled under the pressure.India’s performance with the bat had been reminiscent of the performance against South Africa in Nagpur. This time it was Yuvraj Singh’s turn to score a century, only to see the position he had brought India to squandered by a late collapse. India lost their last seven wickets for 50 runs, with four falling for just 28 after Yuvraj’s dismissal in the 45th over.Against South Africa, the collapse had been 9 for 29, and Dhoni recognised that losing wickets in a flurry at the end of the innings was becoming a problem for India, particularly because it wasn’t allowing them to take advantage of the batting Powerplay.”It [losing wickets] is a concern. But there is a gradual improvement and I am sure we will be at our best in the quarters. That’s the positive I will take out of this.”India’s 80-run win set up a quarter-final with Australia, to be played in Ahmedabad on March 24. They have lost to Australia in nine out of 15 matches played in India during the last five years, and Dhoni was aware of the challenge ahead of his team.”Australia are a very strong side and very expressive on the field. But it’s about how we prepare. Preparation is very important and we are just thinking about that particular day and match rather than thinking about the result. Being in the present is a better option than thinking of the past or worrying about the future.”

Tottenham eye major Osimhen move

Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte has set his sights on Napoli star Victor Osimhen as he makes a big transfer request behind-closed-doors, according to reports.

The Lowdown: Lilywhites linked…

The marquee Nigeria international, currently at the centre of interest from Spurs’ north London rivals Arsenal, has also been turning the heads of Lilywhites chiefs.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-newest-updates/” title=”Tottenham newest updates…” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Football Insider recently claimed that transfer chief Fabio Paratici is plotting a Premier League move for Osimhen after Spurs originally made an enquiry during the January window.

This comes as Conte reportedly earmarks the signing of a new striker to partner or provide back up to star man Harry Kane, with news from a Spanish source now emerging this week on their pursuit of Napoli’s sensation.

The Latest: Tottenham ‘expected’ to move…

According to the report from the Spanish press, alongside the signings of José María Giménez, Milan Skriniar, Denzel Dumfries and a permanent deal for Dejan Kulusevski, Spurs are ‘also expected’ to make ‘more additions to the rotation’.

This includes Osimhen with Conte making a big ‘request’ behind-the-scenes to ‘put together a world class team’ – but it may also hinder on the club’s ability to offload players.

The Verdict: Audacious…

An agreement for the 23-year-old starlet is unlikely at best given his huge price tag and Tottenham’s issues filling their homegrown quota, with The Telegraph claiming they may have to sell one of Steven Bergwijn or Lucas Moura just to sign an overseas forward.

It is believed that Napoli value Osimhen at around €120 million (£101m) and won’t sell for less as president Aurelio De Laurentiis aims to charge big money for his in-form striker.

Former Cagliari boss Walter Mazzari raved over the ‘phenomenal’ forward earlier this season and he has since gone to live up to that tag, scoring a brilliant 17 goals in 29 appearances across his Europa League and Serie A appearances (WhoScored).

His rising stock will also see Tottenham faced with a mounting challenge to land their audacious alleged target.

Afghanistan to get first national women's team

Afghanistan are set to get their first women’s national team, to participate in an international Twenty20 tournament organised by the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) next year. Women have increasingly taken up careers in sport since the overthrow of the Taliban regime in 2001, and the tournament in Kuwait next year marks another step forward for Afghanistan cricket.More than 100 women play the game in Kabul and several have attended umpiring courses, and the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) plans to organise a local competition to shortlist players for the tournament. The team uniform will reportedly include a headscarf or hijab, as per Islamic tradition.”Women’s cricket provides an opportunity for Afghan young women to be fit and have healthier and more active lives,” Hamid Shinwari, the ACB chief executive, said. “The ACB has a strong commitment to developing the game for women in a way that is good for them and, at the same time, respects our Islamic and Afghan values.”Women’s cricket will build self-esteem, leadership and positive values for young women in our country, just as it is doing for young men.””This development is so exciting for our young women cricketers and their families and supporters,” Diana, the women’s cricket development officer at the ACB, said in a statement. “We love our country and hope to support it through our sport. Seeing a women’s cricket team in the Asian Cup will do so much to raise the hopes of many women here.”The men’s national team has made rapid strides, having qualifyied for the World Twenty20 in 2010 and gained ODI status.

Hibs hit by double blow ahead of Celtic

Celtic have been given an injury boost on the double ahead of their next Premiership clash, with Sunday’s opponents deprived of two more players.

The lowdown

Fourth-placed Hibernian are due to welcome the Premiership leaders to Easter Road on Sunday lunchtime, but they will be without James Scott and Elias Melkersen, who have both joined an extensive injury list for the Edinburgh club.

Hibs already knew they would be without Paul Hanlon, Paul McGinn, Joe Newell, Demetri Mitchell, Harry Clarke and Kyle Magennis against Ange Postecoglou’s side.

Celtic have won all three meetings between the teams so far this season, prevailing 3-1 away from home in October before winning 2-0 at Parkhead last month in the Premiership. They also defeated tomorrow’s opponents in the Scottish League Cup final just before Christmas.

The latest

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Hibs boss Shaun Maloney confirmed the fresh double blow, fearing that his side will miss the ‘speed’ and ruthlessness of Scott in particular.

As quoted by The Scotsman, he said: “Unfortunately, the same six players are still out, and they are senior players. We’ve also lost Elias and James through illness, which is a shame.

“It’s a shame because Elias was progressing, and James Scott brings something to us that I see as a coach. In certain moments in matches he brings that speed and that power to finish games.”

The verdict

Valued at £360,000 by Transfermarkt, Melkersen has yet to make his debut for Hibs following his January move from Bodo/Glimt, who knocked Celtic out of the Europa Conference League this week.

The absence of the £450,000-rated Scott is more significant given that he had featured in four of the last eight games, and Maloney seems to view the Hull City loanee as a potential game-changer off the bench.

In truth, a severely depleted Hibs, who have only picked up five points from their last seven matches, may be dreading this clash with the league leaders, particularly with two more players added to their extensive missing list.

Nielsen hopeful of smooth switch to Test mode

Australia’s coach Tim Nielsen has said the players would have to do their best to adjust to the longer form after their recent ODI and Twenty20 series

Australia were set to begin their only warm-up match ahead of the Tests against Pakistan when they took the field for a two-day game against Derbyshire on Thursday. While the length of the game is not ideal, Australia’s coach Tim Nielsen has said the players would have to do their best to adjust to the longer form after their recent ODI and Twenty20 series.”It is going to have to [do],” Nielsen said. “That is the modern world we live in and we have got what we have got. We just have to make sure that we change our mindsets and adapt our game styles as quickly as we can over these two days to get ready for five-day cricket.”Two days is barely long enough to get used to the red Duke ball but Pakistan are in the same situation, with only a two-day fixture against Leicestershire to prepare for the Lord’s Test. Simon Katich, Marcus North and Usman Khawaja have joined the squad ahead of the Tests, as has the swing bowler Ben Hilfenhaus, who is set to make his return to Test cricket.Hilfenhaus hasn’t played a Test since the three-day win over West Indies at the Gabba in November, after which he was struck down with knee tendonitis. Hilfenhaus made a promising return for Australia A in Queensland last month and collected a five-wicket haul against Sri Lanka A in the four-day encounter. The tour-ending knee injury to Ryan Harris has cleared Hilfenhaus’ path back into the Test line-up for Tuesday’s Lord’s Test. Nielsen said it would be good to reintroduce him in England, after he bowled well during the Ashes last year in the swinging conditions.”He proved he has the physical and mental strength to get through a lot of overs and cope with the pressure, that was one of the great things about the attack,” Nielsen said. “They had their ups and downs but they have all become better bowlers since then.”He has been increasing his program since February, so we feel as though this is the right time. We hope things go well and he gets a couple of Test matches under his belt before we go to India and get as much cricket out of his body as we can before the Ashes in Australia later this year.”

Netherlands falter in massive chase

Zimbabwe XI continued to maintain a firm hold on their Intercontinental Cup match against Netherlands in Amstelveen

Stuart Matsikenyeri was one of four Zimbabwe batsmen to make a half-century in the second innings•International Cricket CouncilZimbabwe XI continued to maintain a firm hold on their Intercontinental Cup match against Netherlands in Amstelveen. A string of half-centuries helped them expand their lead to 417 before their bowlers nipped out four wickets as the home side attempted to pull off a huge chase.Resuming on 79 for 2, Zimbabwe’s overnight batsmen Stuart Matsikenyeri and Vusi Sibanda pushed the score to 119 before Matsikenyeri was bowled by Maurits Jonkman for 68. Charles Coventry was also dismissed soon after, but a couple of big partnerships followed which put the visitors in a virtually unbeatable position. Sibanda added 84 with Craig Ervine for the fifth wicket before falling for 88. His exit didn’t slow Zimbabwe though, as Regis Chakabva blasted a 33-ball 54 to dominate an 86-run stand with Ervine.Netherland’s chase got off to a poor start, losing two wickets by the eighth over. Their first innings rescuer, Wesley Barresi, then put on 67 with opener Eric Szwarczynski before becoming Ed Rainsford’s second victim. Netherlands slipped to 109 for 4 with the run-out of Wifred Diepeveen, and though Szwarczynski was unbeaten on 60, they faced a tough battle to save the game.

Former India players dish out harsh criticism

According to Ravi Shastri, MS Dhoni was not at his tactical best in the World Twenty20•AFP

“The IPL is a domestic tournament and the standard is much lower than a world event where you are up against quality batsmen and bowlers. You don’t expect to go to World Cup semi-finals if you play the way the team has played in the Caribbean. Yuvraj has to look at his game. If he doesn’t perform for long periods, the selectors will not play him just on the basis of his reputation. Some of the players have got a lot of opportunities, but have not delivered. They have been around for quite a while and the entire country wants performances from them.”
“India’s lack of adaptability has been a disappointment. What is baffling is that even though most batsmen showed a distinct sense of discomfort against the short ball during the World Twenty20 in England last year, they were picked again for an event on even bouncier pitches in the Caribbean. All other teams remember what happened last year and the tactics employed by them against the Indians prove this.”
“It’s hard to put a finger on the exact reason [for the defeat] but of all the tournaments MS Dhoni has led India in, this is the most disappointing. At times you can be stubborn and stick to your ideas but he might want to be a little more flexible in future. Only 73 runs were scored in the last 10 overs despite having nine wickets in hand. There is no explanation for that. Tactically Yusuf Pathan should have come up in the batting order. Selectors will have to look for Twenty20 players who can play in all kind of conditions.”
“Obviously if you stay up the whole night, it would affect you. Players should be responsible enough. The game is more important than the parties. Excuses like these cannot be given after you lose. For a player, cricket should come first and everything else is secondary.”
“I don’t think that [attending IPL parties] is a reason. Who was forcing them to attend these parties? They could have said no. I don’t think they should say all this. These are silly excuses. Fact is they had gone there to win the World Cup and they just weren’t good enough.”
