A real connection: Rotherham fans pleased to see former player Rob Scott given key role

[ad_pod ]

Matters on the pitch at Rotherham may not be too great at the moment, but there is finally some positive news for the Millers with the announcement of a new Head of Recruitment.

The role has been given to former player Rob Scott who will now primarily be tasked with bringing in new players to the New York Stadium.

Reacting to the news on Twitter, Millers fans were pleased with the appointment their club had made as one supporter described the move as very positive. Another was delighted that someone with a connection to the club had been given a backroom role.

Other fans focused on the club’s budgets, with one tweeter hoping he was given the correct amount of money to work with.

The 45-year-old made his name at Rotherham as a player, featuring for them between 1998 and 2005.

Since hanging up his boots he’s gone on to manage Ilkeston Town, Boston United and Grimsby, all alongside Paul Hurst.

Here’s what Rotherham supporters have been saying about him.

The engine of Liverpool: Firmino hailed by Merseyside club’s supporters

[ad_pod ]On the face of it, 12 Premier League goals for the centre-forward in a team chasing the title is not that impressive. Those are Roberto Firmino’s numbers this season, but the Brazil international brings so much more than goals to Jurgen Klopp’s side.Indeed, another selfless performance against Southampton on Friday night helped the Merseyside outfit record a 3-1 win, returning to the top of the Premier League table in the process.Alongside Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah, Firmino performs a hugely important role for a Liverpool team looking for success in both the Premier League and Champions League in the final weeks of the campaign. It would be fair to say that the Liverpool supporters loved what they saw from the 29-time Brazil international during the victory over Southampton at St Mary’s.Mo Salah has been brutally mocked for his recent diving antics in a new video by 442oons. Check it out below…And a number took to Twitter after the match to lavish praise on the 27-year-old – a selection of which can be seen below:

Arsenal eyeing Liverpool flop Suso

[ad_pod ]

According to Italian outlet Tuttomercatoweb, Arsenal are currently scouting AC Milan attacker Suso.

What’s the story?

The Gunners have apparently sent officials to watch the Milan man, meaning that a summer swoop from the north London club could be on the cards.

The 25-year-old winger has been in fine form this season, regularly impressing with his work rate and creativity at the San Siro. According to Transfermarkt’s stats, the wide man has racked up five goals and eight assists in 22 Serie A outings so far this season. The same site also afford the Spaniard an estimated evaluation of £45 million.

Such a figure could easily put Suso out of Arsenal’s reach, especially if reports that Unai Emery will only have £40 million to spend in the upcoming transfer window are to be believed.

Better options out there

Even if Arsenal were able to stump up the cash and acquire Suso’s services for a fair price, signing the attacking midfielder would still represent a significant gamble. While he has played Premier League football before, spending three years on the books at Liverpool between 2012 and 2015, he was a huge flop at Anfield and never managed to impress in English football.

Suso has certainly improved as a player since then, and the north London outfit are right to be targeting a new winger, but it could simply be that the 4-cap Spain international isn’t cut out for the Premier League. In any case, there are surely better options on the market for Arsenal to bring to the Emirates Stadium than the 25-year-old.

Moussa Dembele enjoys 800% market rise in under 2 years

Brendan Rodgers’ time at Celtic ended sourly, but it is worth remembering the amount of good things he achieved in Glasgow.

His move to Leicester City halfway during the previous campaign certainly didn’t go down well with supporters, but he had taken the Bhoys to a double-treble, and his good work allowed Neil Lennon to take over the mantle and secure the third trio of trophies in a row.

His signing of Moussa Dembele also deserves credit, purely for his foresight. The former France U21 international was signed on a free transfer from Fulham in 2016, and his performances for Celtic convinced Lyon to part with £19.7m for his services just two years later.

In August of 2018, he was worth just £6.3m as per Transfermarkt. Following his most recent valuation update earlier this month, though, his value now stands at a huge £45m – that represents a rise of over 800% in less than 24 months.

Here, we look at three reasons behind that increase…

Lyon move

Dembele’s form during his time in Scotland made him one of the bargains of the century north of the border. In 94 matches, he scored 51 goals, also providing 18 assists along the way. His goal scoring exploits weren’t restricted to the Scottish Premiership either – he scored six goals in 18 Champions League matches, not a bad return at all.

There is only so far you can go at Celtic though – those who want to reach the very top must depart to realise the full extent of their potential.

His move to Lyon meant that he would be playing in front of a far bigger worldwide audience, with his name becoming more well-known.

That, in turn, has only increased his market value.

2019/20 campaign

The 23-year-old’s first year with Les Gones was solid – he scored 20 goals in 46 games in all competitions, but it is this season that has really seen him set his homeland alight. In 42 matches, he already has 22 goals, including 16 in the French top tier – only Kylian Mbappe (18) and Wissam Ben Yedder (18) have managed more.

In such a short amount of time, he has shown that he has the ability to adapt to one of Europe’s top five leagues, and that only pushed his value up.

Man United and Chelsea interest

Whilst Lyon are a big name in France, they lack power on the continent compared to the likes of PSG, for example. As such, their star players will be linked with other sides in the biggest leagues, and Dembele is no different.

Both Manchester United and Chelsea are said to have been interested in him in the past few weeks and months. The latter were said to have made a move for him in January, but their offer was rejected, whilst the former is said to be a dream destination for the striker.

According to Sky Sports, though, Lyon’s sporting director Jean-Michel Aulas wants €100m (£92.3m) for his services – that is some way above his current Transfermarkt valuation.

Newcastle fans rave about Matt Ritchie

Matt Ritchie continued his recovery from an ankle operation by featuring against Rochdale in the FA Cup on Tuesday night.

The Scotland international has been restricted to just six appearances for Newcastle United during the 2019/20 campaign due to his injury problems.

Having been on the bench against Wolverhampton Wanderers at the weekend, he was named in the starting XI as the Magpies booked their spot in the fourth round of the cup.

Ritchie provided an assist in Tuesday’s 4-1 win over Rochdale, and it would be fair to say that a lot of the club’s fans were impressed with his performance.

And a number of the supporters are delighted that Ritchie is now available for selection.

Who the heck is that?! Can you name all 25 of these obscure Newcastle signings…

The Scot has a record of 22 goals and 26 assists in 131 appearances for the Magpies and could now be in line to start Saturday’s Premier League clash with Chelsea.

Indeed, after the FA Cup win many fans expressed their general admiration for Ritchie…

Ritchie has missed a lot of football this season, but the fact that he has undergone two operations since August and is back on the field at the start of 2020 is impressive.

Bruce will surely be keen to take it easy when it comes to the versatile 5 foot 8 veteran, although it would not be a surprise to see him feature in the XI against Frank Lampard’s Chelsea on Saturday.

Meanwhile, another player at St James’ Park is currently being strongly linked with a move to Serie A during the current transfer window.

Harry Winks was Tottenham’s unsung hero in stunning victory over Everton

Tottenham supporters have been in fine voice in the last few hours after seeing their side record a fourth successive Premier League victory on Sunday.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men went into their encounter with Everton off the back of beating Southampton, Leicester City, and Burnley in their previous three league games, and thus seeking a fourth straight win in the league for the second time this season, having done so between September and October. And Spurs managed to do just that in emphatic fashion at Goodison Park, as braces from Harry Kane and Son Heung-min alongside strikes from Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen inspired the visitors to a 6-2 success on Merseyside, leaving them in third place in the Premier League table at Christmas.

Thus, there have been many thrilled Tottenham fans up and down the country in recent times, several of whom are likely to be heaping praise on the exploits of messrs Kane and Son, who proved to be an absolute handful for the Everton backline on Sunday.

South Korea international Son was well managed by Pochettino upon return from the Asian Games at the start of the season, and Spurs are now reaping the rewards from the Argentine’s management given the 26-year-old has scored five goals in his last six league matches, while England international Kane continues to deliver by netting his tenth and 11th league goals on Sunday.

And while those two in particular caused Marco Silva’s men no end of problems at Goodison Park, it was the display of midfielder Harry Winks which suggested that he was indeed the real hero behind Spurs’ stunning victory on Sunday.

The England international has benefited greatly from the midfield issues at the North London club to become a regular under Pochettino this season, with Sunday his 15th appearance of the campaign, 11 of which have come in Tottenham’s last 12 league matches.

And they’ll be plenty more to follow if he maintains the level of performance seen on Sunday, as the 22-year-old did a stellar job on the ball in helping Spurs transition from defence into attack, and indeed off it in thwarting Everton’s advances through the middle of the pitch.

The Englishman, capped three times by his country in recent years, finished with the best pass success rate of anybody in a Tottenham shirt by completing an astonishing 63 of the 66 passes he attempted (as per WhoScored), while his tally of 77 touches was only bettered by Eriksen (84) and right back Kieran Trippier (103).

Thus, Winks was clearly heavily involved on the ball in helping Pochettino’s side move up the pitch, but he also did his fair share of work off it as well by winning all three of the aerial duels he contested, and succeeding with one of the three tackles he attempted as well.

Add in an interception and three blocks, and it’s clear just how vital the 22-year-old was in inspiring Spurs to all three points – he is slowly but surely becoming the main man in the heart of the Tottenham midfield which, with Mousa Dembele likely to leave in 2019, can only be good news for manager Pochettino.

As such, while it was the front men, specifically Kane and Son, who had a field-day in front of goal on Sunday, it was the efforts of £13.5 million-rated Winks (as per Transfermarkt) just behind them which means he was the real hero in Tottenham’s 14th Premier League win of the season at Goodison Park.

Tottenham fans… what do you think? Let us know!

Sunderland given hope of keeping hold of young talent

According to The Evening Chronicle, Sunderland striker Josh Maja has revealed he is happy at the club ahead of contract negotiations.

The teenager is in the final year of his contract at The Stadium of Light, and this is massive news to manager Jack Ross and fans at Wearside, as it would be devastating to lose their star man.

The 19-year-old has already scored seven goals in nine games to help The Black Cats to third place in League One. He is joint top scorer in the league and Ross will be desperate to keep hold him, as the new manager plans to rebuild the club after successive relegations.

The striker is a man that the former St Mirren boss can build his squad around, someone that can spearhead the attack and get the vital goals to carry the club forward, as he has done so far this season.

While no one at Sunderland would want to lose Maja (valued at £225k on Transfermarkt.co.uk), they will certainly not want to see him go on a free transfer at the end of his contract. That is why it is imperative that he signs a new deal, and his recent confession looks very promising for everyone in the northeast. If Sunderland have realistic aims of returning to the top of English football, they must keep hold of their young talent for now.

The Black Cats travel to Coventry on Saturday, hoping to keep the pressure on early season league leaders Portsmouth and Peterborough.

Jay Rodriguez return would make so much sense for Southampton

Southampton have already added Stuart Armstrong, Mohamed Elyounoussi and most recently Angus Gunn to the squad, but manager Mark Hughes is not finished in the transfer market yet.

According to Sky Sports, central defender Jannik Vestergaard is expected to arrive at St. Mary’s at the start of next week after Southampton agreed a £18m fee with Borussia Monchengladbach for the 25-year-old’s services.

And once that is finally wrapped up, the Saints are likely to try their luck with bringing in a new centre-forward.

Guido Carrillo’s loan move to La Liga side Leganes and the different dilemmas that surround his other strikers means Hughes will be desperate to add a new No.9 to the squad.

Considering the above, West Brom and former Southampton man Jay Rodriguez could be a good option for Hughes.

Rodriguez, who is valued at £10.8m by Transfermarkt, netted seven times in 37 Premier League appearances for the Baggies last season and looks to have put his injuries behind him after featuring in all but one of his side’s league fixtures.

At Southampton, a team that plays more brave and expansive than West Brom, Rodriguez could hit double figures again as he did during his first spell at St. Mary’s.

Rodriguez scored 15 goals in the Saints’ 2013/14 Premier League campaign and, with West Brom condemned to the Championship, the 28-year-old could be available for transfer at the right price.
