Antes disso, o time ainda recebe o Tricordiano neste domingo, no Independência.

Spurs fans discuss their interest in Marash Kumbulla

Having conceded 40 goals in the Premier League this season – the joint-most of anyone in the top ten – it’s no surprise to hear Tottenham being interested in making some defensive reinforcements this summer.

The latest player to be linked with a switch to north London? Hellas Verona’s Marash Kumbulla.

According to Italian publication Gazzetta dello Sport (via Sport Witness), Spurs have earmarked the centre-back as a potential option to replace Belgium international Jan Vertonghen, who reports claim is set to leave on a free transfer when his contract comes to an end.

The Greatest Bargains in Premier League history – How much did they cost?

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

The report adds that Spurs could face intense competition from Premier League rivals Everton, and Serie A giants Inter.

After hearing about the links to the 20-year-old, Spurs fans took to Twitter to voice their thoughts on their rumoured transfer target.

One Spurs fan in particular however, raised some concerns about potentially signing Kumbulla, wondering whether he could be another Vlad Chiriches.

At just 20-years-old, Kumbulla could well be the future of Spurs’ defence.

If Vertonghen does indeed leave north London this summer, then going after someone who is considerably younger may be the way to go, particularly with the financial impact of the current situation set to take effect for the next couple of seasons at least.

Kumbulla may be the answer for Spurs.

Arsenal’s Unai Emery’s willingness to make peace with Granit Xhaka another failure

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

When Granit Xhaka impetuously threw a temper tantrum following his substitution against Crystal Palace, it really felt like the beginning of the end for his Arsenal career. The reasons behind him blowing up at the Emirates faithful was somewhat understandable, with the Switzerland international suggesting that his emotions were bubbling up after streams of abuse at both himself and his family.

But his ‘statement’ was simply that. An explanation. It wasn’t a direct apology, attempting to excuse his actions. If Arsenal fans inside the stadium at that infamous moment were partly to blame, then Xhaka too must assume responsibility for a portion of it. Instead, the 27-year-old side-stepped it, and left Unai Emery to handle the fall-out. And boy has the Gunners boss fluffed his lines.

In what no doubt was a tricky situation, the Spaniard immediately after the game insisted his then captain was in the wrong. To him, that was undeniable. Emery even publicly urged the midfielder to make an immediate apology. Xhaka’s response would come several days later. Fast forward a few weeks, and the Swiss ace has been nowhere to be seen, with the Arsenal manager admitting that he has left him out of match-day squads in recent games because the time wasn’t right.

Over the international break, Xhaka has arguably undone all the goodwill that he may have built up with the Arsenal fan-base with some strong words. He expressed that he is keen to sort things out with the club because he “can’t accept what’s happened with me”. Not exactly the kind of words you would associate with someone who is feeling genuine remorse for his mistake.

So what does Emery do? Reveal that the midfielder is in his plans to make his first appearance for the club since the Palace debacle against Southampton on Saturday. Recent reports have suggested the Gunners are happy to let Xhaka walk away in January, so for the manager to publicly suggest he is keen to reintegrate him into the squad smacks of poor judgement.

It’s the latest in a series of baffling decisions and comments that have only served to crank up the pressure on the manager. You only have to look to after the north London side’s 1-1 draw with Wolves earlier this month, when Emery insisted “tactically it worked how we wanted” –  as per Sofascore, they had 10 total shots compared to the visitors’ 24.

With reports claiming that the Spaniard has just a month to save his job, his stance on Xhaka may be the final big call he makes as an Arsenal manager. And judging by how this season has gone, it already looks like another failure on his part.

Sheffield Wednesday fans slam Adam Reach for having a ‘stinker’

Sheffield Wednesday’s poor run of form continued on Wednesday evening as they slumped to a fifth straight game without victory.

At least for once, they weren’t rueing a late goal, but instead, fans were left absolutely reeling from the performance of one player in particular.

Birmingham City opened the scoring soon after halftime when he arrived at the near post to turn in a low cross before Garry Monk needed heroics from Kadeem Harris nine minutes from time as his 20-yard effort somehow found its way past the visiting goalkeeper.

Adam Reach’s performance clearly left a lot to be desired as several members of the Hillsborough crowd launched a tirade of comments at him on social media.

One supporter labelled the 26-year-old as an ‘absolute waste of space’ while another brandished him a ‘headless chicken.’

Other fans hoped to see the back of the winger in January with a further Owls man joking that Reach should be made the kit man instead.

Here’s the best of the reaction:

Newcastle’s move for Granit Xhaka would be a risk but could work out well

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Granit Xhaka could leave Arsenal in January, and according to The Times Newcastle are interested in taking him off their hands.

What’s the word?

Xhaka’s unhappiness at the Gunners is now no secret thanks to his extraordinary outburst in the home match against Crystal Palace a few weeks ago, where his display to the fans was rather unfriendly.

His antics have cost him his captaincy, and he has subsequently missed the two matches since, with a possibility that he could remain sidelined for the foreseeable future.

The Times suggest that if that was to happen, he would request a January move – and Newcastle could be his destination, with Steve Bruce thought to be a big admirer of the Switzerland captain.

However, due to his £100,000-a-week salary a permanent departure may be out of the question, but since the Magpies would be able to offer him Premier League football and perhaps a key role in the team, the 27-year-old could be open to a short-term switch, with Euro 2020 not far away.

Worth the risk?

Much of the hostility that exists between Xhaka, who cost £35m im 2016, and the Arsenal faithful has come about due to their belief that the midfielder has underperformed.

That, along with his poor attitude, could be of concern to Newcastle, particularly as they will probably have to spend a lot of money on his wages.

Also, the Magpies are not in urgent need of a midfield addition, with the Longstaff brothers along with Jonjo Shelvey and Isaac Hayden all capable of fulfilling a first-team role.

However, none of them can match Xhaka’s 87% pass accuracy or 61 average passes per game, and in new surroundings away from all the vitriol at the Emirates he could begin to find his best form once more.

After all, he is the skipper of a national team, and will be determined to impress after the recent fall-out, as his place in the European Championships could come under threat.

As a result, he would probably be a useful addition to the Newcastle squad, and if on a short-term basis it could be hugely beneficial to all parties.

Exclusive: Steve Bruce will given be until January, says John Hartson

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, John Hartson has suggested Steve Bruce will be given until January to turn things around at Newcastle.

Since taking over from Rafa Benitez in the summer, Bruce has had an almighty job in trying to lift spirits at St James’ Park. Before the clash against Manchester United last weekend, the Magpies found themselves with just five points from their opening seven Premier League games.

However, a famous 1-0 victory over the Red Devils helped them climb out of the relegation zone, and Hartson has revealed the next few months could prove crucial in deciding the manager’s future at the club.

He told Football FanCast: “I know Steve, he’s a really really top bloke, says it like it is, doesn’t make excuses, he’s honest, he just needs his players now to step up and to give it everything.

“I think Bruce will get a bit more time, another three or four months until January. If Newcastle are rock bottom or in the bottom three then Mike Ashley might decide to do something and panic.

“But he’ll get the next three or four months to try and get Newcastle on some sort of run.”

Make no mistake about it, the victory over United felt like a hugely pivotal moment in the context of Newcastle’s season and Bruce’s future. The 5-0 humiliation the Magpies suffered at the hands of Leicester the week before had simply added to the ill-feeling and resentment surrounding the club, but the nature of the win against the Red Devils could prove to be a turning point.

Matty Longstaff’s heroics and his partnership in midfield with his older brother, Sean, could galvanise the fans, whilst the side’s return to a more tried-and-trusted tactical set-up bore great rewards too. If Bruce can tap into that over the coming months, then he may just be able to completely turn things around.

Aston Villa’s Wesley can build on recent goalscoring exploits, says Alan Hutton

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Former Aston Villa defender Alan Hutton has claimed that club-record signing Wesley can build on his goalscoring performance last time out.

What’s he said?

Just before the international break, Aston Villa managed to pick up only their second win of this Premier League campaign with a dominant 5-1 victory over Norwich City.

Wesley doubled his tally for the season by scoring a first-half brace, but it could have easily been a hat-trick as the 22-year-old saw his penalty saved by the Canaries’ goalkeeper.

This has led to Hutton claiming he could do better, but he also believes Wesley is able to do precisely that with momentum now on his side.

Speaking to Football Insider, the 34-year-old said:

“He’s come from a different league into the Premier League and it’s arguably the toughest division in the world, so it’s going to take him time to settle down.

“He’s scored a few goals now, I think in the game against Norwich, he did well, in spells, he got a few goals, obviously he could do better, but he’s there to score goals and that’s what he has done.

“Hopefully his confidence will be high and he can build on that and enjoy his football.”

Patience

Wesley was always going to be put under the microscope after costing the west Midlands club £22m, but it would be unfair to judge him this early, considering it is only October.

As Hutton says, it is the first time he has played in a country and league as good as the Premier League, so the 6 foot 3 colossus understandably needed a little patience to help ease him into his new surroundings.

It’s not been helped by the lack of options supporting him as he’s been the only fit senior striker for the most part.

However, four goals in eight games is pretty good going – and as highlighted here, he’s doing a lot better than some of the other new arrivals to the English top-flight.

He’s now netted three goals in as many matches, so maybe that has set a foundation for him to kick on for the rest of the season.

Aston Villa boss Dean Smith should try this alternative starting XI

[ad_pod ]

Aston Villa have endured a torrid time in the Premier League so far this season and it doesn’t get any easier with trips to both Arsenal and Manchester City rapidly approaching.

They have managed to pick up just one victory in the league from a possible five and Monday night’s 0-0 stalemate with West Ham United only highlighted the problems Dean Smith has to deal with.

Villa still struggled to take a strong grip on the match when Arthur Masuaku was sent off with 23 minutes remaining.

The biggest problem has to be in attack considering the west Midlands club are tied first for the highest number of clean sheets so far this season with two.

Their wingers are yet to really get off the mark, picking up just a single goal and assist between the three of them, so maybe it is time to ditch them altogether.

Here’s an alternative look at how Smith should line up this season, removing the width and instead focusing on a narrow solution.

The most significant change is the difference in formation, but the back five should remain as it is – with the addition of Matt Targett once he has recovered from injury.

A lack of width could well become a problem, but not if the full-backs get up the pitch and the likes of Jota and Jack Grealish are given a free role in attacking midfield, which would allow them to drift wide if need be.

We’ve previously highlighted why Marvelous Nakamba is the ideal man to anchor the midfield and his performance against the Hammers further strengthened that claim, earning a WhoScored rating of 7.35 after recording a 100% tackle success rate and dribble rate.

Conor Hourihane could come back into the starting lineup having done no wrong against Tottenham Hotspur recording a rating of 7.06, and he’s able to sit deeper if John McGinn wanted to join the attack too.

Wesley is the only decent striking option until January at the very least so he will have to suffice for the time being.

Something needs to change at Villa as the current system clearly isn’t working in the Premier League.
