Gerrard can quickly solve Nakamba headache

Steven Gerrard has been consistently linked to making moves in the transfer window on many of his former players at Rangers since joining Premier League side, Aston Villa in November.

What’s the story?

Villa have suffered a devastating injury blow in their midfield with Marvelous Nakamba being sidelined for at least two months with a serious knee injury.

This will give the Villans boss a headache, as Nakamba has been a revelation under his new manager.

During Gerrard’s first game in charge against Brighton, he completed an impressive 94.2% of his passes and has consistently performed at that level all the way into his last home game at Villa Park before he got injured, completing 93% of his passes in the 2-1 victory over Leicester.

However, the Villa manager may have already identified his Nakamba replacement in a player he used to manage at Rangers.

Glen Kamara has been tearing it up at Ibrox over the last few years, playing an integral part in the SPFL Champion’s invincible season under Gerrard, with the midfielder adding two goals and two assists to the side’s success.

He has continued to be influential under his new manager, Gio van Bronckhorst, with 25 appearances, one goal and four assists for the title-challenging side from his defensive midfield role.

Gerrard has a clear vision for his Aston Villa future and will be looking to add players who fit his vision, with 90min reporting that Kamara is the prime target for the former Rangers boss.

Kamara was hailed a “special talent” by his former manager at Dundee, Neil McCann, who was full of praise for the 26-year-old in an interview with The Athletic.

There is no doubt that Kamara thrives under Gerrard’s management and coaching, so it would seem like a very easy transition for the midfielder to come to the Premier League and join his former boss at Villa Park.

The 41-year-old manager will be looking for a quick fix solution to the hole that Nakamba will leave in the midfield, especially with his aforementioned pass completion statistics that will surely be missed in builds of play coming from the middle of the pitch.

Kamara could be a great solution with his experience working under Gerrard successfully, and at a great price as the £21k-per-week earner could be reportedly available for Villa to move in with a good offer, relieving Gerrard of the worries and pressure over Nakamba’s return from injury. Based on that, it would ensure Villa start the January transfer window with a bang.

Australia's captaincy contenders

The favourite to take over from Ricky Ponting, Australia have won 11 out of 14 ODIs under Michael Clarke’s captaincy•Getty Images

Michael Clarke, 28, New South WalesCricket Australia’s kingmakers nailed their colours to the mast two years ago by announcing Clarke as Ponting’s successor, but recent developments have called into question whether the baton change will be so clear-cut. A mainstay of Australia’s Test middle-order, Clarke has made less of an impact in the limited overs formats, where his modest strike-rates (67.31 and 80.91 in one-dayers and Twenty20s respectively since the beginning of 2008) have placed significant pressure on his teammates to lift the tempo. That said, Australia have won 11 out of 14 ODIs under Clarke’s captaincy, and the right-hander has averaged 97 in his two matches as Australia’s Twenty20 skipper. He remains the favourite to succeed Ponting.Cameron White, 26, VictoriaWhite has played a leading role in guiding the Bushrangers to all four domestic Big Bash finals – three of them victoriously – and is considered one of the most tactically astute Twenty20 minds in the country. Though omitted from Australia’s original squad for the World Twenty20 in England this year, he was eventually called in to replace the Andrew Symonds and retained his position for the series in England. White possesses a presence not dissimilar to Symonds in the Australian middle order – he has averaged 41.40 at the eye-catching strike-rate of 150 in eight Twenty20 internationals – and also offers an occasional wrist-spinning option. With Symonds out of the picture, White will presumably be a permanent fixture in the Australian Twenty20 side henceforth.Brad Haddin, 31, New South WalesSelectors have twice called upon Haddin to lead Australia in Twenty20 internationals against New Zealand (home) and Pakistan (away) during rest periods for Ponting and Clarke. Previously, he earned a reputation as an aggressive and adventurous leader at NSW, but has made way for Simon Katich at domestic level in recent seasons. A compact and aggressive batsman, Haddin has been used everywhere from opener to the middle-order in his ODI and Twenty20 career and remains a competent wicketkeeper. Australia’s selections panel might baulk at adding to his already heavy workload, however.Michael Hussey, 34, Western AustraliaHussey is an unlikely option given his advanced age and 0-4 win-loss record as national ODI captain, but has emerged as perhaps the most important batsman in Australia’s limited overs sides. Despite modest recent returns in the Test arena, Hussey has played a Michael Bevan-esque role in recent ODI campaigns and was the only Australian nominated for the ICC’s one-day player of the year crown.Callum Ferguson, 24, South AustraliaAustralia have lost their past five Twenty20 internationals – including both pool games in a shambolic World Twenty20 campaign – prompting CA to announce a major review of selection and tactics. Ferguson would represent the ultimate in clean slates, although an elevation to the captaincy would seem most improbable given his dearth of leadership experience with the Redbacks. He nonetheless remains Australia’s brightest batting prospect and could feasibly play the game at the highest level for another decade.

Konate must start for LFC vs Arsenal

With their 3-2 defeat against West Ham United now behind them, Liverpool’s next Premier League clash sees them take on another tough opponent in Arsenal who are not only one place and two points behind Jurgen Klopp’s side in the league table, but they are also unbeaten in the league since August.

On the chalkboard

With this in mind and the fact that Mikel Arteta’s side have managed to score eight goals in their previous four league games, one player that should be in consideration to be in Klopp’s starting XI on this occasion is centre-back Ibrahima Konate.

Despite only playing in four games for the Merseyside club so far this season after arriving at Anfield during the previous summer transfer window from German club RB Leipzig in a deal worth a reported fee of £35m, Konate has managed to keep a clean sheet in three of those games, including their 5-0 win over Manchester United, keeping Cristiano Ronaldo quiet in the process.

This performance, in particular, not only earned the Frenchman an overall match rating of 7.2/10 from SofaScore but also heavy praise from Reds captain Jordan Henderson who described Konate’s performance against the Manchester club as “outstanding” after Konate made eight clearances, one tackle and won three of the four duels he was involved in.

[snack-amp-story url = “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/check-out-the-latest-liverpool-news” title=”Check out the latest Liverpool news!”]

Despite this, Konate, who is currently earning a weekly wage of £70k-per-week according to Spotrac, didn’t manage to have a similar sort of impact during their 2-2 draw against Brighton & Hove Albion where the Liverpool Echo said that he was “a little slack on occasion” in terms of his distribution and decision-making.

However, with Joel Matip racking up a fairly disappointing overall match rating of 6.4/10 for his performance against West Ham from SofaScore, this could be a good time for Klopp to give Konate his chance back in the team again and put his shaky display against Brighton behind him.

Looking ahead to the Arsenal match, Konate has definitely shown during his time with the Reds that he has what it takes to step up to the plate in big fixtures such as the match at Old Trafford and dominate opposition attacking players, which he could well do against the Gunners.

Aston Villa coach Michael Beale is "phenomenal"

While much of the excitement at Aston Villa at the moment will naturally surround Steven Gerrard and how he can get the club firing again, NSWE will be absolutely delighted at securing the services of another man: Michael Beale.

The 41-year-old arrived at Villa Park as Gerrard’s first-team coach from his time at Rangers, and has been widely hailed by numerous people for the role he has played.

Indeed, Gerrard himself told The Robbie Fowler Podcast: “What I’ll never do is try to do someone else’s job when they are better than me at doing it It would take me 15 to 20 years to become as good as Michael Beale as an on-pitch coach, delivering sessions on a daily basis, so I let Mick be Mick because he’s the expert.”

That sentiment is echoed by journalist Stuart Hodge who exclusively revealed to GIVEMESPORT the kind of role Beale has played, and will play at Villa Park over the coming months and years.

Hodge said: “Beale is the man behind him that’s doing things and looking at things from a different perspective. He’ll be the one doing a lot of the drills on the training pitch.”

He added: “Gerrard is the manager and Beale’s the coach, essentially. Beale is the brains behind the operation, whereas Gerrard is very much the face and the front of it.”

Having that respected coach who can really dig into the finer details on the training ground and really improve players will be particularly key for a young Villa side brimming with exciting talents coming through the academy – not least the likes of Carney Chukwuemeka and Cameron Archer.

And, speaking to BBC Scotland, former Gers star Peter Lovenkrands outlined just how Beale goes about things with individual players: “What he does with the players on the pitch is phenomenal. I remember he was giving me sessions to take down because I was doing the reserves; he wanted us to copy it. I was loving it. I actually wanted to take part in the training.

“He’s so on the ball. He’s so good at what he does. The players love it. His preparation for each game is fantastic to watch, and Gerrard is very lucky to have him.”

While Villa fans will surely be very pleased with appointing Gerrard, the arrival of the 41-year-old Beale in tandem could be the real masterstroke that really ignites things behind-the-scenes.

Meanwhile, Ashley Preece has revealed what Gerrard has “transformed” at Villa Park…

van Jaarsveld lifts Kent from danger

A round-up from the latest County Championship matches

Cricinfo staff01-May-2009Division Two3rd dayKent’s captain, Martin van Jaarsveld, lifted his side clear of danger on the penultimate day at Chelmsford, cracking his second century in as many matches to secure a first-innings lead of 226 against Essex. Van Jaarsveld came to the crease with his side in some danger at 113 for 2, still trailing by 52 after being asked to follow on, but a third-wicket stand of 124 with James Tredwell (79) ensured against any further damage. Darren Stevens then set his side up for a draw by reaching the close on 74 not out in a total of 391 for 5. Danish Kaneria was the most successful of Essex’s bowlers with 2 for 109.4th dayJon Lewis and Steve Kirby shared three wickets apiece as Gloucestershire saw off a determined run-chase from Northamptonshire to win by 44 runs on the final day at Wantage Road. Set a daunting 371 for victory, Northants were handily placed overnight on 200 for 5, with Andrew Hall and David Willey unbeaten in a sixth-wicket stand of 98. That partnership was soon ended when Willey fell to Vikram Banerjee for 47, and though Hall fell nine runs short of his century when Alex Gidman pinned him lbw, Steven Crook ensured the chase went on by marshalling the tail with 55 from 82 balls. The end, however, came quickly, as Kirby and Lewis returned with the new ball, and extracted the last three wickets for four runs.England’s Under-19 batsman James Taylor guided Leicestershire to safety with the first first-class hundred of his fledgling career, as Middlesex were thwarted in their victory push at Southgate. After being asked to follow on midway through the third day, Leicestershire were handily placed on 177 for 2 when play resumed, and though Tim Murtagh gave them some early jitters with three wickets for nine runs, including Boeta Dippenaar for 93, Taylor didn’t let their position slide away in a determined 197 ball innings. He received stoic support from the tail, with Paul Nixon making a virtually strokeless 31 in almost three and a half hours, before Wayne White and Carl Crowe flung the bat with more abandon as the match petered out in the closing overs. After losing an entire day to rain, Glamorgan and Derbyshire managed just 5.3 overs on the final day at Cardiff as their match finished as a very soggy draw. In the time available, Robert Croft claimed Daniel Redfern for his third wicket of the innings, but it was all academic.Division One3rd dayNottinghamshire cemented their overnight advantage against Lancashire on a curtailed third day at Old Trafford, as they extended their first innings from 263 for 6 to 367 for 9 declared, a lead of 178. The mainstays of their day were the captain Chris Read, who was run out for 63, and Paul Franks, who made 51 from 86 balls in his first first-class outing of the season. Lancashire were left with a solitary over before an early, which was negotiated without alarm.Matt Prior responded to his omission from England’s Twenty20 squad with a bruising unbeaten century, as Sussex fought back after an early collapse against Hampshire at The Rose Bowl. After losing the second day to the weather, Hampshire declared after 5.5 overs on 350 for 8, whereupon Dominic Cork continued his penchant for early breakthroughs by claiming the wickets of Michael Yardy and Ed Joyce. Chris Nash fell to James Tomlinson for 33, and when Murray Goodwin was run out for 7, Sussex were staring down the barrel at 97 for 4. But Prior sprung to the rescue with his first century of the season, as he dominated a fifth-wicket stand of 74 with Andy Hodd, who made 25 before become Cork’s third wicket of the innings.4th dayFor a full report from the final day between Somerset and Durham at Taunton click here. For a full report from the final day between Yorkshire and Worcestershire at Headingley click here.

Joachim Andersen was poor against Leicester

Crystal Palace staged a dramatic second-half fightback to secure a point against Leicester City in their Premier League clash at Selhurst Park on Sunday.

The visitors raced into a two-goal lead going into halftime thanks to strikes from Kelechi Iheanacho and Jamie Vardy, but Patrick Vieira’s substitutes proved pivotal, with Michael Olise and Jeffrey Schlupp coming off the bench to rescue a 2-2 draw.

Palace largely dominated proceedings in the opening half an hour, yet a mistake from one of their usually more reliable stars turned the game on its head.

Summer signing Joachim Andersen took a heavy touch when receiving a pass from centre-back partner Marc Guehi under no pressure, allowing Leicester forward Iheanacho to capitalise on his mistake and put the Foxes ahead.

The 25-year-old was then unable to cut out Harvey Barnes’ pass to Vardy for the second, compounding a tricky six-minute spell for the Denmark international.

As per SofaScore, Andersen received a measly match rating of just 5.8 out of 10 for his underwhelming showing, the lowest total awarded to any player on the pitch over the weekend.

It was an out-of-character display from the former Lyon ace who usually bullies his opponents, with Andersen losing three of his seven duels and failing to make a single tackle during the 90 minutes.

But he was especially sloppy when in possession. He lost the ball on a whopping 22 occasions and completed just six of his 17 attempted long balls, leading to an overall pass completion of only 77%.

Andersen proved to be a liability for Palace as he let Vieira down in south London. However, his previous displays for the capital club have been full of promise, meaning the former Nice boss should keep faith with his £20m acquisition following the international break.

And, in other news…Forget Schlupp: Palace beast who won 75% of his duels was Vieira’s real hero

Simmons slams 282 as England toil

Lendl Simmons made good his promise to push for a double-century, and ended up recording a massive career-best 282, as England’s bowlers were given far more of a work-out than they had bargained for on the second day of their final warm-up match against West Indies A at Basseterre.Simmons, the nephew of former West Indies opener Phil, cracked eight sixes and 26 fours eventually declared on 574 for 8, shortly after tea on the second day. He even picked up a rare seven in one slapstick moment, as Steve Harmison’s shy from the covers was fumbled by the keeper, Matt Prior, only for James Anderson’s follow-up throw to clatter off the stumps and away to the boundary. After the declaration, England’s day got worse before it got better, as Alastair Cook was dismissed by Kevin McClean for a first-ball duck, but Andrew Strauss continued his good form with an unbeaten 59, as he and Ian Bell added 114 runs for the second wicket. Bell, however, once again gave his wicket away when well set. Having been dropped on 49, he was bowled around his legs by the spinner, Gavin Wallace, for 52, five overs before the close. The day, however, belonged to Simmons. Having resumed on 171 overnight, he quickly laid into the spinner, Graeme Swann, cracking a flat six straight back down the ground after scorching a drive through the covers. A single off Paul Collingwood took him to his 200, which equalled his career-best, and two further sixes in the same Kevin Pietersen over showed he had no intention of slowing down.England were visibly deflated in the field, although they did put up an early wicket when Sewnarine Chattergoon edged James Anderson to Matt Prior for 37. Steve Harmison then boosted his hopes of playing at Sabina Park next Wednesday with two quick breakthroughs after lunch – Leon Johnson was undone by extra bounce before the captain Darren Sammy was unluckily adjudged lbw for 14.Simmons’ masterclass eventually came to an end when Ryan Sidebottom trapped him lbw from around the wicket after more than nine-and-a-half hours at the crease – it was Sidebottom’s first first-class wicket for six months. West Indies A went to tea on 561 for 6 and continued batting after the break, although Harmison worked up a good head of steam to claim two late wickets to finish with the hard-earned figures of 4 for 101.Amid the toil, the one genuine piece of good news for England was the sight of Andrew Flintoff appearing as a substitute fielder. He had earlier tested his side strain with a gentle warm-up in the nets.

Gul, Rafatullah set up easy win

Three wickets from Umar Gul and a comfortable fifty from Rafatullah Mohmand eased NWFP to an easy six-wicket win over Baluchistan Bears at the National Stadium in Karachi. Their first win also kept alive their hopes of reaching the final, to be played against the Punjab Stallions. If Sind lose to Punjab tomorrow and NWFP can get past the Federal Areas the day after, they will face Punjab in the final on December 24.Unseasonal rains over the last two days had forced the abandonment of one game and weather conditions in the port city meant Gul had an easy decision to make on winning the toss: field first. This he duly did and then played a huge role himself in dismantling Baluchistan.Under partially overcast skies, as the ball nipped around. Gul and Samiullah Khan Niazi both put together an exemplary opening, stifling Baluchistan’s start and sending back both openers. That settled the tone for the innings. Baluchistan could only scrape together runs, against a committed seam attack. When they did fight back, through the in-form Saeed Bin Nasir and captain Misbah-ul-Haq, left-arm spinner Mohammad Aslam Qureshi popped in for a tight spell. He dismissed both in swift succession, leaving Gul to do one of the things he does best: mop up the tail. The target of 153 was barely a challenge, less so as the sun came out. Yasir Hameed helped Mohmand along against an unthreatening attack. There was time enough for Mohmand – once close to Pakistan selection when Inzamam-ul-Haq was captain – to unveil a few strokes and his unbeaten 75 led them home with 98 balls remaining. It also kept their hopes alive for another day.
