Need to take pressure off Clarke – Wade

Matthew Wade has said batsmen need to find the right balance between patience and aggression if they are to give Michael Clarke the support he needs

Australia’s wicketkeeper Matthew Wade has said the batsmen need to find the right balance between patience and aggression if they are to give Michael Clarke the support he needs to turn the Test tour of India around. Clarke has scored more than twice as many runs as any other member of Australia’s top six during the first two Tests and will move up the order from No.5 for the third Test in Mohali in an effort to exert greater influence on Australia’s batting innings.More than a quarter of Australia’s runs in the series have come off the bat of Clarke but only two batsmen have accompanied him for meaningful partnerships, Moises Henriques, in a 151-run stand in Chennai, and Wade for a 145-run partnership in Hyderabad. That ended when Wade cut a catch to backward point off Harbhajan Singh for 62, the ball after a missed stumping, and Wade said he knew he had thrown away a chance to really influence the game.”Michael has had to score a truckload of runs for us,” Wade said. “I felt very disappointed when I got out in this Test match. We’d put on nearly 150 runs and we were both really going. If I could have hung around with him, it could have been endless. Individually we’d like to stick around with him and help him out a little bit more and take the pressure off him. But I’m sure he’s going to keep scoring runs no matter what.”For most of Australia’s batsmen getting starts has not been the problem, but rather finding a way to stay at the crease long and push through to a much longer innings. In some cases they have fallen trying to force some runs to relieve pressure, while in other instances they have found themselves too tentative. Achieving the right balance is a fine art that the Indian batsmen have mastered in this series.”Getting a boundary away or playing a scoring shot relieves the pressure a little bit,” Wade said. “It’s hard work to try to stay mentally in your game plan and not go away from that when the spinners are bowling really well. One thing that I definitely saw in the first innings [in Hyderabad] is when you do get on top, things start to happen a lot quicker. You can go from 20 to 50 quickly in these conditions.”We might have to be a little bit more aggressive at times to get India to do something different because if they get into a rhythm and just bowl dot after dot, the game’s not going anywhere for us. We’re just sitting ducks. We’ve got to try to be a little bit more aggressive and put the pressure back on their bowlers.”However, in some cases when the Australians have tried to do just that it has cost them their wickets. Two Tests in to the series, the batsmen are starting to realise just how difficult the Indian conditions can be in Test cricket, which is a new experience for all but Clarke and Shane Watson among the batting group. Wade said the first two Tests had “definitely” been a wake-up call for the batsmen, who had a centre-wicket practice session on the Hyderabad pitch on what should have been day five of the Test.”The West Indies [2012 tour] was similar to these kinds of conditions, big-spinning wickets, hard to score, good spinners, good quicks bowling reverse,” Wade said. “Coming from Australian conditions to these conditions is a massive difference and it has taken a little bit of time to adapt. But that’s no excuse. We had two trials games where our batters got good innings and our bowlers had a good bowl.”We were a little bit flat [after the loss] but training has helped the mood, to get out there and start honing our skills again. Going to a ground day five when you were supposed to be playing, it’s not a great result when you are there training, but everyone was pretty focused individually on how to get better. The bigger thing is that as a team we need to get better so as the training session went on people got a little more relaxed and came out of their shell.”

Rob Walter resigns as South Africa white-ball coach

It is understood that the pressure he faced and continuous travel from New Zealand, where he lives, were taking a toll

Firdose Moonda01-Apr-2025Rob Walter, South Africa’s white-ball coach, has resigned two years into his four-year contract. Walter was initially due to take South Africa to the 2027 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.CSA cited personal reasons for Walter’s stepping down while ESPNcricinfo understands that the pressure Walter faced over his bilateral record, as well as the continuous travel from New Zealand, where Walter lives, were starting to take a toll.”Coaching the Proteas has been an incredible honour, and I am immensely proud of what we have achieved together,” Walter said in a release. “The players, support staff, and the South African cricketing community have been fantastic throughout this journey. While it’s time for me to step away, I have no doubt that the team will continue to grow and reach even greater heights.”Under Walter, South Africa qualified for their first men’s World Cup final, at the T20 World Cup in 2024, and the semi-finals of the 2023 ODI World Cup and last month’s Champions Trophy. But bilaterally, his record has been poor. In his tenure, South Africa played seven bilateral ODI series and lost three, including their first whitewash to Pakistan. They also played eight T20I series and won just one.Walter always offered the caveat that he very rarely had full-strength sides available to him in bilateral cricket as players were rested, given permission to play in franchise leagues or prioritised for other formats but the context was often lost against the backdrop of bad results.South Africa made it to the semi-finals of each of the last three ICC events.•DP World

Walter also faced criticism over his transformation record, in particular the selection of a squad with one black African player, Kagiso Rabada, at the T20 World Cup. Director of Cricket Enoch Nkwe backed Walter’s selection (South Africa do not have a selection panel and leave those decisions to the coach) and also commended the work Walter did in awarding new caps. Across two years, Walter awarded 14 new ODI caps including Gerald Coetzee, Tristan Stubbs and Ryan Rickelton, and 13 T20I caps of which Kwena Maphaka was one, and has helped identify a talent pool for South Africa to work with.”It is also important to recognise Rob’s commitment to expanding the talent pool across both formats. While in charge, he ensured that emerging players had the opportunity to develop and make their mark at the highest level, which will be critical for the future of the Proteas,” Nkwe said, and confirmed Walter’s successor will take South Africa to the 2027 tournament. “We have a busy period of white-ball cricket over the next two years as we build towards the Cricket World Cup on home soil. His successor will continue to work towards that 50-over World Cup campaign, along with next year’s T20 World Cup.”There are no clear contenders for the job but the conversation could include former South Africa spin bowler Robin Peterson, who successfully led MI Cape Town to the SA20 title earlier this year and coaches the Warriors franchise (though they were recently docked points for failing to meet transformation targets). Nkwe has previously coached South Africa and could reintroduce himself in some capacity or ask red-ball coach Shukri Conrad to step in, as he did in January 2023, when South Africa hosted England.Conrad has taken the team to the World Test Championship final, which is South Africa’s next assignment in June, and if the team opts for a consolidated role, he may also be given responsibility of the white-ball teams. The ODI and T20I sides will play against Zimbabwe in July before tours to Australia and England and five home T20Is against West Indies ahead of next year’s T20 World Cup.

Mandeep ton puts Punjab in strong position

ScorecardMandeep Singh scored a century after being offered several lives•Fotocorp

The Mumbai slip cordon failed to support the good work of their bowlers, dropping plenty of catches to let Punjab gain the upper hand on the opening day of the Ranji Trophy Group A tie at the Wankhede Stadium.Riding on an unbeaten century by stylish batsman Mandeep Singh, who was given three reprieves, and his 128-run stand for the third wicket with Ravi Inder Singh, Punjab ended the first day at a strong 288 for four. Had the Mumbai fielders grabbed five chances, three of them offered by Mandeep in the last session, the 39-time champions could have had the better of their opponents, who are the only team to have qualified for the knockouts so far. With the Wankhede pitch wearing a different look to the one used for the Test match a fortnight ago, captain Ajit Agarkar’s decision to bowl first wasn’t a surprise. While Agarkar and Dhawal Kulkarni kept it tight, the in-form Punjab openers Jiwanjot Singh and Karan Goel saw off the first hour without much trouble. However, sensing that the Pavilion End was offering more assistance for the quicks, Agarkar changed ends after bowling four overs from the Tata End and the move worked. He managed to extract additional bounce and Goel, who had hit a sweetly-timed boundary off Balwinder Singh Sandhu in the previous over, edged it to Ajinkya Rahane at second slip. While Jiwanjot, who has been piling on runs in his maiden first-class season, was cautious, Ravi Inder Singh didn’t take time to get going, thanks to a flurry of edges that flew off his bat to the vacant third-man boundary. With medium pacer Sandhu, playing his first match of the season, and offspinner Ramesh Powar looking lacklustre, Agarkar introduced allrounder Abhishek Nayar in the first session itself. And Nayar, who had bowled a dream spell of 19-12-13-6 against Bengal four days ago, created a chance immediately. Nayar forced a nick off Jiwanjot but wicketkeeper Aditya Tare’s diving attempt went in vain. After being given a life and with lunch approaching, Jiwanjot went into a shell. Left-arm spinner Ankeet Chavan, introduced in the 32nd over, got an edge off the batsman off the first ball he bowled. But Rohit Sharma failed to latch on to the edge while diving to his right. After surviving chances on 39 and 41, Jiwanjot went in to the break having added 51 runs with Ravi Inder, with Punjab at 108 for one.But the two chances didn’t prove costly for Mumbai as Jiwanjot prodded at one from Kulkarni soon after lunch and provided a catch to Hiken Shah. The rest of the session was dominated by Ravi Inder and Manpreet, who displayed all the strokes in their array at will. While Ravi Inder preferred to score boundaries in a gentle fashion, Mandeep, who led Punjab in the last three games in Harbhajan Singh’s absence, adopted a more aggressive approach.Mandeep waged an intentional attack on Chavan, who was bowling a tight line and length. In the 47th over, he slog-swept the lanky spinner for a boundary twice, and then danced down the pitch to hoick him over the long-on boundary. Perhaps the young batsman was relishing being relieved of his captaincy duties as he continued to pile on runs at will.In the last session though, Mandeep seemed to have repeated lapses of concentration, but the Mumbai fielders repeatedly came to his rescue, dropping him on 67, 73 and 93 in the slips. With so much help from the opposition, Mandeep did not falter in converting his maiden fifty of the season into his fifth first-class century. The milestone came with an elegant flick off Kulkarni that raced to the midwicket fence.Mumbai, however, managed to have the last laugh on the day when Uday Kaul became the third left-hand batsman to have been caught behind with just two balls remaining in the day’s play. Though Kulkarni gave the hosts the much-needed breakthrough, they would be aware that the job is far from being done. And if the fielders – all of them specialist batsmen – don’t back their bowlers, the line-up, without Wasim Jaffer who had to leave for Lucknow due to a close relative’s death, will have to work doubly hard with the bat.

No clássico contra o Corinthians, a mesma empresa atou no operacional do jogo e teve o trabalho elogiado.

Australian attack could become world's best – Arthur

Glenn McGrath on the pace attack

  • Peter Siddle has got great attitude. Aggressive bowler, comes in, doesn’t give anything away. Bowls in good areas.

  • Ben Hilfenhaus swings the ball and bowled up in the 140s. Good pace, good control.

  • James Pattinson has got all the attributes to be a great fast bowler. He is tall. He is strong. He hits good areas at good pace. Fair bit of aggression there.

Australia’s attack could become the best in the world, according to the coach Mickey Arthur. The Australians arrived in Sydney on Saturday ahead of the second Test against India, which starts on January 3 at the SCG, and they go into the game with a 1-0 lead following the strong performance of their three fast bowlers in Melbourne.James Pattinson was Man of the Match for the second time in his three-Test career, Ben Hilfenhaus showed how much he has improved over the past year, and Peter Siddle’s aggression and skill helped him dismiss Sachin Tendulkar in both innings. Australia are expected to retain the attack, which also includes the offspinner Nathan Lyon, in Sydney. However, Ryan Harris has also joined the squad after recovering from his injuries, and as a proven Test performer will be ready should any member of the incumbent trio falter. The 18-year-old Pat Cummins, who made a remarkable debut in Johannesburg in November, will also be in the mix whenever he recovers fully from his foot problem.Over the past few months, Australia have also used Mitchell Starc and Trent Copeland, while Shane Watson’s medium pace will also be important when he returns to the side. Arthur said he was impressed by the depth in the pace stocks.”I thought we had 15 players that can play international cricket at any given time,” Arthur told reporters on Saturday. “Hopefully by the end of the summer we might have 22 guys that can do that because we need to build up our strength in depth, which we are doing now. But I do think this pace attack has the potential to become the best in the world.”Between them, the fast men took 19 of India’s wickets at the MCG, the only exception being the final dismissal of the match, when Umesh Yadav lofted Lyon to long-on. However, Arthur did not expect a four-man pace attack to be on the cards at the SCG, despite the presence of Harris in the squad.”I’m pretty loath to go into any Test match without a spinner,” Arthur said. “Obviously conditions will determine that, but the SCG has normally got a history of favouring spin down the line.”There is absolutely no doubt that they [India] will try and go after him [Lyon],” Arthur said. “But Nathan is a pretty skilful offspinner and I reckon that will develop into a very interesting contest. I think we’ll get a lot of overs out of Nathan if it’s a typical SCG wicket and I’ve got full confidence in his ability.”Arthur was also confident that Australia’s top order could do the job against India, including Shaun Marsh, who was out to poor strokes in both innings in Melbourne. Together with David Warner and Ed Cowan, Marsh is part of an inexperienced top three, but Arthur believes they can become a strong group.”I think we just need to give them time, especially our younger players at one, two and three,” Arthur said. “David Warner is going to be a great player in all three forms of the game, same with Shaun Marsh. I think Ed Cowan gave us that stability that we were looking for, especially in the first innings.”The Australians will train at the SCG on Sunday morning.

Hoje fui glorificado.

Uganda, Nigeria end group stage with wins

A round-up of the sixth day of matches in the ICC Africa Region Division One Twenty20 2011

ESPNcricinfo staff14-Jul-2011Uganda crushed Kenya by eight wickets at the Kyambogo Cricket Ground, registering their sixth win of the ICC Africa Division One Twenty20 2011, to set up a final with table-toppers Namibia. Choosing to bat, Kenya limped to 74 for 9 in their 20 overs – just three of their batsmen managed to get into double figures with Kennedy Ochieng top scoring with 26. Deusdedit Muhumuza and Davis Arinaitwe picked up two wickets each, and three run-outs were effected in the innings.Despite losing opener Arthur Kyobe off the second ball of the chase, Uganda faced no real threat, with Abdulah Lubega and Arthur Ziraba putting on 69 for the second wicket and effectively sealing the match. The winning runs came in the 15th over with Lubega unbeaten on 36.Nigeria beat Ghana by a convincing six-wicket margin at the Lugogo Cricket Oval, to finish third in the points table. Choosing to bat, Ghana were off to an impressive start with a 44-run opening partnership, but the rest of the line-up failed to capitalise. Francis Bakiweyem fell soon after reaching his half-century, edging Kunle Adegbola to the keeper, but his knock was key to Ghana reaching 127 for 9 in their 20.Nigeria were solid in their reply. There were handy contributions from four of their top five batsmen with No. 4 Ramit Gill top-scoring with a run-a-ball 35. Adegbola, who had picked up three wickets, was unbeaten on 28 off 25 balls, as Nigeria finished the game with 15 balls to spare. While Ghana’s one win from eight games puts them at the bottom of the table, Nigeria have qualified for Friday’s third-place playoff in which they will play Kenya.

Craig McDermott pipped his old pace rival Allan Donald to be the man charged with shepherding Australia’s pace bowlers after they slipped to innocuous depths during the Ashes. The appointment of Troy Cooley’s replacement was announced in Brisbane on Thursday after Michael Brown, Cricket Australia’s head of cricket operations, had completed his final round of interviews.”It’s great to be back as part of the Australian team set-up again and I can’t wait to get started working with the bowlers and the rest of the team,” McDermott said. “We’ve got some challenging tours ahead in the coming months but I’m excited at the opportunity to be part of the group that helps get Australia back to number one in all forms of cricket.”McDermott wasted little time identifying the potentially explosive but more often wayward Mitchell Johnson as a key to the Australian team’s fortunes. Johnson maintained a very close relationship with Cooley, but the countless hours they spent together did not always result in fruitful spells on the field.”I thought Mitchell had his head in a really good space in Bangladesh,” McDermott said. “If he can get it together he’s like no other bowler we’ve got in the country. His arm speed is phenomenal and when he gets it right, he’s unplayable. He was working on a couple of things in Bangladesh and if he gets it right he will bowl well and he’ll be around for a long time.”In the 15 years since his retirement from international cricket in 1996, McDermott has tried various pursuits, not all of them successful. But in recent times he had worked as a pace bowling coach at the Centre of Excellence in Brisbane, and was taken to Bangladesh as interim pace bowling coach for Australia’s short tour in April, where he gelled successfully with the players.”Not everything is a quick fix. It’s a long-term thing. Certainly I’d like to put an emphasis on that part of our bowling,” McDermott said of encouraging Australia’s bowlers to pursue a fuller length. “If you pitch it up you’re a much better chance of getting lbws, caught behinds and clean bowleds.”We’ve got more than enough (bowling) depth for Australia to be top in all three forms of the game. It’s a challenging time but I enjoy a challenge.”McDermott was chosen out of an initial field that included Jason Gillespie and Andy Bichel in addition to Donald and the little-known Allister de Winter, with his previous involvement in the Australian system a major selling point. A long and successful Test career, in which he took 291 wickets across 71 matches and excelled in a wide variety of conditions, also helped.”His impressive record as an international player, during which he successfully overcame a number of setbacks, combined with his recent record at the Cricket Australia Centre of Excellence and with the Australia team in Bangladesh, all impressed us that he was the outstanding candidate for this role,” said Brown. “He will provide valuable support to the new Test Captain, Michael Clarke, coach Tim Nielsen, and the playing group.”Justin Langer, retained as batting coach the same day McDermott was appointed, quantified the Queenslander’s value.”He had an unbelievable work ethic when he played,” Langer told . “He played in an era with some great players and also a tough era. He went through the AB times and the Bobby Simpson times. That experience will be invaluable.”I think he’ll also bring quite a worldliness to the group, because he obviously went away from the cricket scene for some time and had varying degrees of fortune in his business life. He’ll bring that worldliness to the group, which I think is pretty invaluable in this day and age.”Often young professionals now, they gain this change-room existence where they come in and they become professional cricketers and all they really get to know is the change-room and their team-mates. I think any outside sources or influences who can talk to them about life after cricket and about being a good person off the field, or the different challenges that come with being a professional cricketer and the rewards that come with that, will be valuable.”Donald is now likely to remain with New Zealand where he had begun a fruitful relationship with the national side during the World Cup, while de Winter will go back to preparing the Tasmanian pace attack for their tilt at defending the Sheffield Shield title.
