India's bowlers prevent whitewash

Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
BCCI

Not since the winter of 1983, when Clive Lloyd’s West Indies avenged their loss in the World Cup final, had India been whitewashed in an ODI series at home. Following their third poor batting performance against Pakistan, India were hurtling towards a 0-3 score line in the cold of Delhi, until their bowlers rallied in conditions that offered seam and spin, applying relentless pressure until Misbah-ul-Haq’s team cracked in the dead rubber. As Yuvraj Singh, pursued by team-mates, went off on a celebratory run and slide after catching Mohammad Hafeez in the penultimate over to secure a hard-fought victory, the exuberant celebrations on the field and in the stands at the Kotla were a release of emotion from a country that has had precious little to celebrate in cricket in recent times. An Indian victory, however, had appeared unlikely after their batsmen had crumbled against Pakistan’s versatile attack. A raw seam attack, spearheaded by Bhuvneshwar Kumar and the debutant Shami Ahmed, had only 167 to defend and they went about it manfully. Ahmed began his spell with two maiden overs and continued to bowl with economy. Bhuvneshwar nipped out two early wickets with inswingers and bowled his ten overs on the trot, leaving Pakistan 55 for 2 after 19 overs.

Smart stats

  • The ten-run win is India’s third lowest against Pakistan (in terms of runs) overall and their lowest in home ODIs against Pakistan. The lowest (four runs) was in Quetta in 1978.

  • The run aggregate in the game (324 runs) is the third lowest in an ODI in India in matches where both sides have been bowled out. It is also the second lowest aggregate in an India-Pakistan game, after the 212 runs in Sharjah in 1985.

  • For only the fourth time in India-Pakistan matches overall, and the first time since 1996 in Toronto, there was not a single half-century in the game. It is also the second such instance in Delhi.

  • Saeed Ajmal’s 5 for 24 is the fifth best performance by a Pakistan bowler against India. However, it is the second best by a Pakistan bowler in a defeat against India, after Imran Khan’s 6 for 14 in 1985.

During that period, India’s fielding was at its best, with Ajinkya Rahane and Ravindra Jadeja throwing their bodies around on a chilly evening to cut off fluent flicks and drives. The only easy runs Pakistan got were two leg-side wides from the offspinner R Ashwin that beat MS Dhoni and sped to the boundary.Pakistan rebuilt through Misbah, who batted doggedly for 39 off 82 balls, first with Nasir Jamshed and then with Umar Akmal. Both those stands were ended by Ashwin, and at 113 for 4 in difficult batting conditions, India were gaining ground. They received a lucky break, when Shoaib Malik was adjudged lbw to Ishant Sharma though he was hit outside the line, and Akmal charged Ravindra Jadeja too early and was stumped.Only Hafeez, batting at No. 7 because of an injury while bowling, stood between India and victory and he was dropped by Rahane in the 42nd over, a straightforward chance at leg slip. He dragged his team towards the target and had to refuse singles with the No. 11 Mohammad Irfan, after Pakistan had lost three wickets in eight balls. With 23 runs needed in the last two overs, Hafeez hit two boundaries before holing out to off Ishant.Any immediate anguish Pakistan felt, however, quickly dissipated as their players, heavily jacketed in the misty evening, celebrated a 2-1 series victory. That India had at least 167 to defend was largely down to Dhoni, who was Man of the Match for his captaincy and his 36 off 55 balls, and Jadeja. Having left out Virender Sehwag to give Rahane a run, India lost three early wickets to the pace and swing of Mohammad Irfan and Junaid Khan. And they continued to struggle against Saeed Ajmal, who dismissed Suresh Raina and Ashwin off successive deliveries on his way to a five-wicket haul. India were 111 for 6 in the 29th over. Dhoni immediately carted Hafeez for his third six over deep midwicket and in a later over he inflicted the blow – a flat smash – that forced the Pakistan opener down the order.Dhoni fell in the 35th over and Jadeja, because he was running out of partners, began to attack and score what he could. He hit a towering straight six off Umar Gul, and another off Ajmal over cow corner, but his riposte ended on 27. India were dismissed in the 44th over, but the wasted resources did not cost them the game.

Former Bangladesh umpire Nadir Shah passes away at 57 after battle with illness

Nadir stood in 46 internationals, after a long domestic career playing for some of Bangladesh’s top clubs

Mohammad Isam10-Sep-2021Former international umpire Nadir Shah passed away in Dhaka on Friday, after a prolonged battle with cancer. He was 57. Nadir stood in 40 ODIs and six T20Is, after a long domestic career playing for some of Bangladesh’s top clubs. After a recent bout of illness, Nadir was taken to a hospital last month. He was recovering from respiratory complications, but two days ago, he had to be given life support after his condition deteriorated.Nadir was the youngest of seven brothers, one of whom, Jahangir Shah played five ODIs for Bangladesh. Four other brothers also played league cricket. Nadir moved into umpiring in the mid-1990s, before making his international debut as umpire in 2006.Nadir was known for his obsession with cricket from his youth, right up to the current Bangladesh-New Zealand series when he was in hospital. He was a friendly character who could strike up a conversation with anyone, provided the topic was cricket. During the 1997 ICC Trophy, Nadir helped out the Bangladesh team with scouting other teams in Malaysia.Cricketers knew him as someone who was fair as an umpire, but one who would also give suggestions to batters and bowlers if they were not showing good technique.Bangladesh’s sports minister Md. Zahid Ahsan Russel led the tribute. “Nadir Shah was a renowned face on the cricket field,” he said. “His death is an irreparable loss for the country’s sports arena. The nation will forever remember his unique contribution to the advancement of cricket in the country.”BCB’s chief executive Nizamuddin Chowdhury said that Bangladesh cricket will miss Nadir. “Nadir Shah was a most affable person who was loved and respected by all in the cricket fraternity. He will be missed. He lived for cricket and had always executed his responsibility as an umpire with fairness. We pray for the salvation of his soul,” he said.

Rare full-strength squad likely for India

For the first time India have had a significant break between the IPL and their subsequent international series, and all their first-choice players are expected to be available for the Sri Lanka trip when the selectors meets in Mumbai

For the first time since the IPL was inaugurated, India have had a significant break between the tournament and their subsequent international series. They will have had a break exactly as long as IPL 2012 before they play the first of five ODIs against Sri Lanka on July 21, and this has ensured players like Zaheer Khan and Virender Sehwag, who are prone to injury, have had sufficient time to rest and recover. All India’s first-choice players are expected to be available for the Sri Lanka trip when the selection committee meets in Mumbai on Wednesday.Member of Parliament Sachin Tendulkar’s case has become different from those of the rest in recent years, and having played only two ODI series since 2011 World Cup, he could decide to skip this one as well. Till Tuesday evening though, reports said he hadn’t ruled himself out.If Tendulkar does opt out, it would do away with the controversial rotation policy followed in the CB Series in Australia, when only two of Tendulkar, Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir were chosen in the XI. Sehwag’s absence had taken care of the same during the Asia Cup. If Tendulkar makes the trip, Manoj Tiwary, who has travelled half the world with the side without getting a game, could miss out after a lukewarm A team tour of the West Indies. The India quicks had a disappointing Asia Cup, but the availability of Zaheer and Umesh Yadav makes the weakest link appear far less so. Ashok Dinda could keep his place after a decent show in the West Indies with the A team and in the IPL.Whether the selectors persist with Rahul Sharma as the second specialist spinner, alongside R Ashwin, remains to be seen, given his unspectacular returns in the West Indies and the presence of an army of part-timers. Whether the selectors bring back Harbhajan Singh, who has been sidelined for almost a year and has just signed with England county Essex, also remains to be seen. The county contract, though, sends out a signal that they might have already made up their mind. The contest for the No. 7 spot began afresh in the Asia Cup, with Yusuf Pathan returning even as Ravindra Jadeja continued to retain his place in the squad after a poor CB Series. Yusuf featured in only one game in the series and didn’t get a chance to bat, so it is fair to assume that this round of the battle has only started. Yusuf, though, did have a woeful IPL, even more so than Jadeja. There is also the case for Irfan Pathan, who is nowhere near the bowler he once was, but did better than Jadeja both in the CB Series and in the Asia Cup.Team combinations apart, another thing to watch out for is the choice of vice-captain for this series, after the position was taken from Gambhir and given to Virat Kohli for the Asia Cup.A little over a month separates the Sri Lanka tour and the World Twenty20, which will be played in the same country. Given the disasters the last two editions of that tournament held for India, this series and the experience the combination that is picked gets could prove useful come September.

Nesse período, a equipe marcou 51 gols e sofreu 29.

Butcher laments dropped catches

Alan Butcher, Zimbabwe’s coach, singled out dropped catches as the reason for his team squandering their chance of being competitive in the latter stages of the Test

Alan Butcher, Zimbabwe’s coach, singled out dropped catches as the reason for his team squandering their chance of being competitive in the latter stages of the Test against Pakistan. Zimbabwe dropped six catches in Pakistan’s first innings and conceded a lead of 54 runs, after they had scored an impressive 412 themselves.”Catching probably cost us a chance of winning,” Butcher said. “We had every reason to believe that we would get a first-innings lead.” Mohammad Hafeez, who was Pakistan’s only centurion, was dropped twice, while Misbah-ul-Haq, Younis Khan and Umar Akmal were also put down. The bulk of the missed chances were relatively simple and Brendan Taylor said the team felt a general “frustration” at not taking their opportunities. They were less hard on themselves for the batting collapse in the second innings, which resulted in Pakistan being given a small target to chase. “On this wicket there was always potential for a collapse,” Butcher said. “[Saeed] Ajmal will cause better teams than ours some problems but we were disappointed to lose so many wickets to Hafeez in the second innings, because we thought he didn’t spin it that much.”Hafeez took four middle- and lower-order wickets after Ajmal had bagged three, with Aizaz Cheema chipping in with one. After slumping 69 for 8 on the fourth day, defeat appeared certain for Zimbabwe, but Tatenda Taibu’s stubborn half-century gave them slim hope of posting a defendable total. “We wanted to try and bat a session, bat some time out of the game and then chip away and build a lead,” Taylor said. “We knew anything could happen given their [Pakistan’s] history.”For a change, “anything” did not happen and Pakistan went on to record a routine victory. Zimbabwe lost by a smaller margin than the last time they played Pakistan – a 10-wicket defeat in Bulawayo in 2002 – and instead of dwell on the defeat they are opting to zone in on other aspects of their game as they look to rebuild a reputation in Test cricket.”There are a lot of positives to take out of this,” Taylor said “I wouldn’t say more than the Bangladesh game, but there are definitely positives. It was good to see us bat for 150 overs.” Butcher also lauded the first innings effort, in particular Tino Mawoyo’s maiden Test century. “Having an opening batsman bat through an innings was good.”Ajmal proved the major threat of the match, and tested Zimbabwe right through the first innings, even when the pitch had yet to show cracks. Butcher was pleased with the way Zimbabwe tried to withstand his assault. “We said if he is going to get a lot of wickets, then we will make him bowl a lot of overs for it and we made Ajmal bowl 50 overs to get his four wickets.”The Zimbabwe bowlers had a tough time on an unresponsive strip and Taylor thought, “The spinners worked hard together and showed good character,” while Butcher was impressed that, “having conceded so quickly at the start to have pulled it back was also good.”Zimbabwe’s inexperienced seam attack of Brian Vitori, Kyle Jarvis and Chris Mpofu took a pasting, managing only four wickets between them. Vitori, the nation’s wonderkid after his performances against Bangladesh, did not snag a single victim. “There were high hopes for him after Harare, he is hungry to learn,” Taylor said. “He has a great attitude and he will be back.”Butcher said the unhelpful surface will only aid Vitori’s development. “It took him a lot longer to find his length,” he said. “He has probably been brought back down to earth after his spectacular start but it was always going to happen.” While Vitori was expensive, Jarvis and Mpofu leaked a little less and Taylor said the pair could “hold their heads up high” for a brave showing.

Hampshire, Durham consider deal in rain-ruined match

Durham skipper Phil Mustard will consider trying to do a deal with Hampshire’s acting captain, Jimmy Adams, on the final day of the rain-ruined County Championship match at Chester-le-Street

12-Aug-2011
Scorecard
Durham skipper Phil Mustard will consider trying to do a deal with Hampshire’s acting captain, Jimmy Adams, on the final day of the rain-ruined County Championship match at Chester-le-Street. After only 30 overs were bowled on the first two days, play began at 1pm and Hampshire moved on from 77 for 3 to 230 for 6 before bad light ended play at 4.58pm.”I think they are quite keen to do something,” said Mustard. “We were tempted to try for full bonus points, which would have put us 17 points clear at the top.”But we don’t have time to get them and our rivals have games in hand, so we would like to go for a win if possible. It’s in our favour that we are batting last and we would try to knock off a target.”Despite a fine innings of 90 by Neil McKenzie and a brisk half-century from Dimitri Mascarenhas, Hampshire’s overall run rate is 2.77 runs an over. The one batting point they have gained still leaves them 49 points adrift of safety and if they are to have any hope at all of avoiding relegation they need to win.Hampshire suffered an early setback today when James Vince retired on 19 after trying to soldier on following a back spasm. Sean Ervine made only 3 before pushing the ball into the covers and failing to beat Mark Stoneman’s direct hit.McKenzie began the day by leg glancing the sixth ball from Callum Thorp for four, taking him to 50. It was the third of his nine boundaries to come from that stroke. Vince drove Graham Onions’ first ball to the cover boundary but after surviving a big lbw appeal when a yorker hit him on the foot he was soon in trouble and needed treatment from the physio. When Chris Rushworth replaced Onions his first ball was greeted by a short-arm pull as McKenzie took two fours off his first over. The South African continued to dominate and had made 90 out of a total of 143 when Rushworth moved one away from a perfect length to have him caught behind.Wicketkeeper Michael Bates then dug in to help Mascarenhas add 72. The former England one-day man drove strongly, hitting nine fours in his 64-ball half-century before edging Mitch Claydon to Mustard. Bates reached 28 off 99 balls and needs three more to equal his best score.

Spin coach not essential – Hauritz

The absence of a specialist spin-bowling coach in Australia’s full-time touring setup is not a major problem, according to the offspinner Nathan Hauritz

Brydon Coverdale17-May-2011The absence of a specialist spin-bowling coach in Australia’s full-time touring setup is not a major problem, according to the offspinner Nathan Hauritz. Craig McDermott is Australia’s new bowling coach and his brief, like that of his predecessor Troy Cooley, includes mentoring the slow men as well as the fast bowlers.McDermott took 291 Test wickets off the long run-up and would seem as qualified to help the spinners as he would be to advise the batsmen. But Hauritz said while it was in theory a positive to have a specialist on hand to assist the slow bowlers, the information overload provided by an extra coaching staff member was not necessarily a good thing.”It is good, it gives you someone else to talk to about fields and tactics, but sometimes it can confuse things,” Hauritz told ESPNcricinfo. “You can have too much. It can be a bit overwhelming at the end of the day.”There’s so much technology these days. Any spin coach can watch the footage or you can sit down and have a chat over the net, Skype or anything like that. Craig McDermott’s experience and record speaks for itself. I think he’ll be invaluable for the side. And he’s going to offer different opinions about spin bowling as well. It’s all going to be worth listening to.”Australia typically don’t take a spin coach on tours, although the Centre of Excellence mentor John Davison has travelled with the side, as he did on last year’s Test tour of India. England, on the other hand, use the former Pakistan spinner Mushtaq Ahmed as a specialist coach, and his former team-mate Saqlain Mushtaq has advised the New Zealand spinners.Australia’s spin stocks are not exactly brimming with world-class talent, and an international expert might be of use to give Hauritz and his colleagues a different perspective. He said when bowling in the nets on a tour, it was usually the batsmen to whom he turned for advice, as they had a good view of how he was performing.”They’ve generally got the best idea of how the ball is coming down, whether they’re getting beaten in flight, the lines, what sort of fields you’d set,” Hauritz said. “That’s what I like to work with. When you’re bowling against those guys, if you’re doing the right thing and the ball is arriving in the right way, they can give you the best response. If not, then you can work on it from there.”
