Next coach must be from Pakistan – Waqar

Waqar Younis, who quit as Pakistan coach after their tour of Zimbabwe in September, has said his successor should be someone from within the country. Opinion has been divided on whether Pakistan should look for a Pakistani coach or a foreign one; the PCB committee in charge of appointing the permanent coach received applications from foreign coaches as well as local ones. Waqar said they should choose from among the latter because someone from within the country would understand the system better.”I think it is ideal to have a local coach for many reasons,” Waqar told ESPNcricinfo. “A Pakistani coach actually understands the nature and mental approach of the players, and has a stronger understanding of the system. If I had a successful stint with Pakistan it was only because I came up through the system and hence understand it quite well.”The PCB is yet to appoint a permanent replacement for Waqar with Mohsin Khan being appointed interim coach for the series against Sri Lanka in the UAE. They have drawn up a shortlist of five names but are yet to make a final decision.Waqar coached Pakistan through a difficult period, with the spot-fixing scandal during the England tour in 2010 being followed by Zulqarnain Haider’s abrupt departure on the eve of a one-day match due to threats from bookies. However, despite the shock those events sent through Pakistan, results remained fairly consistent: Pakistan drew a Test series against South Africa before winning one in New Zealand, and then reached the semi-finals of the World Cup. Waqar announced his resignation just before the Zimbabwe tour citing health reasons and has since joined the commentary team for the ongoing Test series in the UAE.He said he was undergoing treatment which prevented him from doing rigorous physical activity. “I am undergoing a treatment that comes with a precaution to avoid pressure and exhausting field work, which I would have been doing as coach. It’s working fine so far and I hope things will be better in near future.”After Pakistan’s tour of the West Indies earlier this year, it was revealed that there had been friction between Waqar and then one-day captain Shahid Afridi during the trip. Afridi was subsequently sacked as captain and he announced a conditional retirement, saying he would only play for Pakistan if there were changes in the board and management. After Waqar’s departure and the replacement of PCB chairman Ijaz Butt by Zaka Ashraf, Afridi said he wanted to return to the national team. Waqar said he did not think it was right of Afridi to have quit international cricket temporarily and said he should only be allowed back if he could prove he deserved it.”I never had a personal problem with Afridi but I believe it wasn’t fair to Pakistan cricket the way he acted, but these are his decisions and his way of handling things. It [his conditional retirement] actually left a negative impact on the minds of the young players in the country and is not a good example for the upcoming players.”There must be sufficient criteria for his return to the national setup. It should be ensured that he has played enough cricket recently and has done enough to be recalled.”Waqar said he was impressed with the way Pakistan had played for most of the first Test against Sri Lanka, and saw them continuing to do well. However, he said it was important that the new coach was given a selection role for the team to progress.”What’s the definition of coach for a national team? The coach must have a role in selecting the best team to work with and hand over to the captain in the field. Pakistan needs to have a clear selection role for their coach. After all, you need to have someone responsible for results and interestingly it’s always the coach who gets sacked if results are not good.”Pakistan are headed in the right direction. They are doing a wonderful job and they could have won the first Test but failed to finish well. You can’t just criticise them for that because they had dominated the opponent for most of the game.”

Hafeez to undergo surgery on cyst

Mohammad Hafeez, Pakistan’s opening batsman, has been ruled out of the domestic Faysal Bank T20 competition, due to a cyst on the chest that requires surgery

Umar Farooq29-Sep-2011Mohammad Hafeez, Pakistan’s opening batsman, has been ruled out of the domestic Faysal Bank T20 competition because of a cyst on his chest that requires surgery. The timing of the surgery has been decided with an eye on Pakistan’s upcoming international commitments.”It’s a minor surgery, nothing serious, but he [Hafeez] opted to skip the Twenty20 championship as precaution,” a PCB spokesman told ESPNCricinfo. “He has very less time ahead of the Sri Lanka series [the first Test begins on October 18 in Abu Dhabi], which is followed by Bangladesh and England series. So it’s the ideal time for him to undergo surgery.”He needs to go through a recuperation process after surgery and, since the commitments of the national team obviously have priority, ensure his availability for Pakistan.”Hafeez, 30, is a key member of the Faisalabad Wolves, who kicked off their Faysal Bank campaign with a convincing 54-run win against Multan Tigers in Karachi. He was in prime form during Pakistan’s recent tour of Zimbabwe, scoring 467 runs and taking 13 wickets across formats, with four Man-of-the-Match awards and two centuries.

Spurs: Gold drops Conte update

Alasdair Gold has dropped an update on the future of Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte.

What’s the talk?

In a recent video posted on YouTube, the football.london journalist revealed that, despite recent reports claiming that Conte would be interested in taking over from Mauricio Pochettino at Paris Saint-Germain this summer, people close to the 52-year-old have claimed that there is nothing to these rumours.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-spurs-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-levy-conte-paratici-thfc” title= “Read the latest Spurs news!”]

Regarding the Italian’s future at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Gold said: “We should also talk about Conte and PSG. Reports coming out from one French outlet say that Conte dreams of managing PSG. Look, I’ve spoken to a few people around Conte, and they say it’s not true… his people claim there is nothing to it.”

Supporters will be buzzing

Considering the extremely impressive job Conte has done since taking over from Nuno Espirito Santo in the Tottenham dugout back in November, the news that the 52-year-old is not currently planning on leaving the club for PSG this summer is sure to have left the Spurs faithful buzzing.

Indeed, while there have been a number of Premier League fixtures against Southampton and Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in February – it is undeniable that Conte has improved Spurs’ performances on the pitch.

Indeed, having won 13, drawn four and lost six of his eighth in the top flight standings to fifth – just two points behind Arsenal, who currently occupy the last Champions League spot in fourth.

And, with Fabio Paratici and Daniel Levy having already committed the best part of £60m on the signings of Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur in the January transfer window – both of whom are very much Conte-type players – it would appear likely that the former Inter Milan boss will receive the backing of the Spurs hierarchy once again this summer.

As such, it is clear to see that Gold’s suggestion the club can plan for 2022/23 with the Italian overseeing operations is undoubtedly fantastic news for all involved with Tottenham, as the prospect of Conte having a summer transfer window and a full pre-season to work with his Spurs side would appear to bode extremely well for the club’s chances of success next time out.

West Ham insider shares ‘£30m’ update

As per West Ham United insider Claret & Hugh, coming after the club’s historic 3-0 victory at Lyon in their Europa League quarter-final second leg, things just get better and better as they share a ‘£30 million’ update.

The Lowdown: Hammers make history…

David Moyes’ side made history on Thursday night by impressively cruising past Lyon into the Europa League semi-finals – where they will take on Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-newest-updates/” title=”West Ham newest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Goals from Craig Dawson, Declan Rice and Jarrod Bowen sealed a brilliant win for the Hammers who have made history with their run in Europe so far.

Off the field, this could pay dividends for West Ham and club owners GSB, with C&H sharing the latest financial developments after mid-week.

The Latest: C&H make ‘£30m’ claim…

According to their information, the club have been gifted a major windfall as West Ham’s finances ‘grow and grow’.

They claim, when adding up the competition’s prize money, London Stadium ticket sales and TV revenue, the Irons have earned ‘over £30m so far’ due to their run in the Europa League.

The Verdict: Major boost…

It is unclear whether this money, or even a portion of it, will be allocated to Moyes and head of recruitment Rob Newman’s transfer kitty, but this £30 million boost comes as a fantastic side-effect of West Ham’s dream semi-final push.

If they can get past Frankfurt, or even go on to win the Europa League, it would represent a seismic achievement for West Ham and surely cement Moyes as one of the club’s greatest ever figures.

Standing to make even more if West Ham go further, this is a very exciting time both on and off the field for supporters.

Hildreth's sixth drives Somerset

ScorecardJames Hildreth’s sixth ton of the season put Somerset on top at Taunton•Getty Images

Few batsman can have been monitored for so long without drawing conclusive judgement as James Hildreth, who has been tracked by England’s selectorial radar for the full seven years of his professional career yet still remains neither selected nor discarded. His only senior representative cricket so far has been an England Lions tour to India in 2008, when he played five innings against regional teams and top scored with a modest 43. Others have done better and subsequently disappeared but not so Hildreth, whose description by Justin Langer, his former Somerset captain, as being possessed of “an extraordinary talent” was not made lightly. Then again, Langer is not the only respected judge to hold that view. Ever since, six years ago, in only his second first-class match, Hildreth made a century against a Durham attack containing Shoaib Akhtar at somewhere near his peak, he has been carrying a substantial weight of expectation and the faith of his admirers in his capacity to fulfil his potential has not wavered. All that has been lacking is consistency but now perhaps that nut has been cracked. On a glorious afternoon here, in wonderful contrast to the depressing drizzle of the day before, he made an unbeaten 128, his sixth Championship hundred of the season and his fifth in the last seven matches. The frustration of last year, when he scored a triple-hundred in the opening match but failed to make his 1,000 for the season, has been banished. It is a run that might persuade the England selectors that he should be in discussions at least when the shape of the Ashes squads are debated. In the top division, only Adam Lyth has more runs and he has more hundreds now than Michael Carberry, who led the way previously.Hildreth was the driving force here as Somerset set about the difficult task of trying to engineer a result from a match hit by the weather. Hampshire, who had a threadbare attack weakened further as Dominic Cork and Sean Ervine struggled with back injuries, are not likely to offer them a target, so it is down to Somerset to give themselves a decent lead and time for their bowlers to take 10 wickets. With that in mind, they will look most towards Murali Kartik, their in-form left-arm spinner.Hildreth paced his innings in accordance with this plan, scoring 50 off 77 balls, 100 off 143. By the close, Somerset’s lead was 108. Should they be able to add to that quickly on the final morning, they may still have scope to force a win that, really, is essential if they are to remain live contenders for the title. At first, Hampshire looked to be gaining the upper hand, however. The left-armer James Tomlinson, to whom much of the seamers’ workload fell, added to the wicket of Marcus Trescothick late on Tuesday by dismissing nightwatchman Alfonso Thomas and opener Arul Suppiah via catches in the slips, at which point Somerset were 60 for 3.They missed a major opportunity, however, when Craig Kieswetter was dropped by James Vince at first slip off Ervine, before he had scored a run. Kieswetter made Hampshire pay for the mistake, helping Zander de Bruyn add 65 of their 68-run partnership before he drove Tomlinson, who ended with 5 for 78, to Michael Lumb at extra cover for 43. Lumb had been in the wars himself, taking a blow on the foot when fielding at silly point, and Hampshire face an anxious couple of days ahead of Twenty20 finals day before they know who is fit to be considered.De Bruyn found his rhythm during a stand of 155 with Hildreth but he missed out on a hundred, attempting to reverse sweep left-arm spinner Danny Briggs on 95 only to be bowled. Briggs might have landed another blow had Michael Bates, the rookie Hampshire wicketkeeper, not spurned a chance to stump Hildreth in the 90s.So stretched were Hampshire’s resources that their physio, Craig DeWeymarn, had to spend the final session on the field as a second substitute fielder, confusing the public by wearing Cork’s shirt. The real Cork had to withdraw after bowling one ball after lunch. Ervine also disappeared into the dressing rooms, although with Dan Christian wearing his sweater his absence also might have eluded spectators. Hampshire supporters will not want imposters in their place on Saturday.

Jones: Winks could be on for Saints move

Tottenham midfielder Harry Winks would be interested in a move to Southampton this summer, transfer insider Dean Jones has claimed.

The Lowdown: Winks’ playing time

Since the arrival of Rodrigo Bentancur at the end of January, the former England international’s playing time with Spurs has decreased significantly. In the Lilywhites’ last five Premier League games, the 26-year-old has played just 17 minutes of football.

As a result, reports have claimed that both Crystal Palace and Southampton are keen on signing the midfielder in the summer transfer window.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/southampton-latest-developments/” title=”Southampton latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: Jones’ claim on Winks

Jones believes that a move to St Mary’s would be the best option for Winks, who could jump at the chance to join the Saints.

Speaking with GiveMeSport, the journalist claimed: “If everything comes together for them, I think he would be interested in it, so I think Southampton are on the right path.”

The Verdict: Lack of midfield options

Southampton have a limited number of options in the midfield department. Whilst James Ward-Prowse and Oriol Romeu have been leading the charge, the only other senior option in the engine room is youngster Ibrahima Diallo.

Therefore, a player with Winks’ experience in the top flight (124 Premier League appearances) would surely be of great use to this Saints side, as it would allow for more frequent rotation.

Having described a number of the 26-year-old’s performances as “amazing”, former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino once compared the player to the likes of Andres Iniesta and Xavi in the midfield, illustrating his calm presence on the ball.

Therefore, with limited game-time expected under Antonio Conte, a move to Southampton could be the best option for Winks’ career, and Jones seems to think it is very much viable.
