Everton: Patrick Boyland drops Gbamin update

The Athletic’s Patrick Boyland has delivered an update on Everton ace Jean-Philippe Gbamin, who recently completed his loan move to Russian giants CSKA Moscow.

What’s the story?

Writing on Twitter, he said: “Everton are hedging their bets with Gbamin’s CSKA loan. No purchase option & Russian club paying sizeable chunk of wages. A chance – perhaps final chance – to show he can return to the levels reached at Mainz.”

Fans will be fuming

Since his big-money from Mainz, it’s been nothing short of a disaster for Gbamin, with injuries completely wrecking his time on Merseyside.

The fact that he has only managed to make eight appearances for the Toffees since his switch way back in 2019 is a sad reflection of how things have gone for the Ivory Coast midfielder.

Shedding some more light in a follow-up piece for The Athletic, Boyland added: “The main driver for this loan is to afford him the opportunity to put a string of games together and attempt to get back to the player he was before he joined Everton.

“The onus would be on him to convince Lampard of his quality ahead of the new season. It very much feels like a last chance for Gbamin at Everton.”

Gbamin’s stock has fallen so far through the roof that even former CSKA defender, Vladimir Ponomarev, said recently: “(President Yevgeni) Giner used to be involved in signing players. Was he removed? It can’t be that he did such a stupid thing! The man played 8 games in 2 years. It was not even worth taking such a player for free.

“Dynamo at one time took 8 Portuguese and nothing came of it. Giner used to make spot purchases. And now they have recruited second-rate players.”
The Toffees simply needed to cut loose on Gbamin and accept that this was a move that just hasn’t panned out, but their inability, or even desire, to not include a buy option/obligation for CSKA at the end of the loan move appears to be prolonging the misery.
Frank Lampard has already signed Dele Alli on a permanent deal, and lured Donny van de Beek in on loan from Manchester United, and no doubt the hope will be that he can add to his midfield ranks in the summer with some further quality additions.
Gbamin just doesn’t fit into this new era that Lampard is building at Goodison Park, and knowing that he will be back in the summer rather than being permanently offloaded seems like a foolish call to make.
It’s a decision that may have Everton fans fuming.
Meanwhile, Lampard could find his own Mason Mount at Everton in this academy star…

ميدو يحذر قطر قبل انطلاق كأس العالم: مدربون كبار يحاولون تشويه المونديال

Aston Villa: Omari Kellyman set to join

Aston Villa are set to sign Derby County forward Omari Kellyman, according to reliable reporter Alan Nixon.

The Lowdown: Kellyman profiled

Transfermarkt classify Kellyman as an out-and-out centre-forward who is left-footed, while The Athletic stated that the youngster can also play in a number 10 role or as a second striker.

The Northern Irish youngster turned 16 last September and is seen as one of the biggest talents in Derby’s youth academy.

The Rams recently lost Luke Plange to Crystal Palace and Dylan Williams to Chelsea, and it seems as if Kellyman will be the latest to depart for a Premier League club.

The Latest: Villa move for Kellyman

According to Nixon, Villa are ‘going to sign’ Kellyman, who he labelled as a ‘real talent’.

The journalist believes that a fee is in the region of £500,000, with The Athletic adding that personal terms are also settled but a deal is not yet finalised.

The Verdict: Another?

Villa are still on the search for the best young talent despite the January window closing, and it seems as if Kellyman is set to make the move to Bodymoor Heath.

He could initially link up with trialist Taylor Clark in Sean Verity’s under-18 side, with Villa running the rule over the Needham Market midfielder. Should Clark impress in the Midlands, then Kellyman could become another young addition alongside the 17-year-old.

Kerr Smith also joined the club’s academy last month from Dundee United, so it’s good to see that Villa are thinking long term as well as bolstering Steven Gerrard’s senior ranks.

Split-innings matches gain mixed reviews

The concept of two-innings one-day cricket, which Cricket Australia will trial next season, has been viewed with cautious optimism by two of the county second XI coaches in England who have had first hand experience this year

The concept of two-innings one-day cricket, which Cricket Australia will trial next season, has been viewed with cautious optimism by two of the county second XI coaches in England who have had first-hand experience this year, but with concern voiced that matches can be decided very early.Leicestershire and Sussex have both reached the semi-final stage of the knockout competition where the split innings are being used in the 40-over matches. Phil Whitticase, who is in charge of Leicestershire’s second team, has experienced both ends of the spectrum in the matches he has been involved in.”I think the jury is still out, in the two games we’ve played I’ve seen both sides of it,” he told Cricinfo. “In the first we had Northamptonshire 76 for 6 after 20 overs and it meant we could play very steady cricket and won the game. I called it second-gear cricket, which isn’t want you want.”But in the second, against Surrey on a very good pitch, we won a good chase off the penultimate ball and it was a close game throughout. It certainly seemed to have more merit after that second game, but the feedback we have got is that some games could be over by three o’clock.”Some of the supporters who watched the Surrey game said it was a bit hard to follow with too much chopping and changing but I think that is something they could get used to.”Mark Davis, the Sussex second XI coach, also said there was a danger of matches being decided very early but believed the format was worth further discussion because of the increased tactical element it involves.”One issue I have had is that if a team performs badly in the first 20 overs the game can be as good as over and it isn’t much of spectacle which can become a bit boring,” he told Cricinfo. “First up people were quite sceptical and negative about it, much like they were at the start of Twenty20 cricket, but the two games we have played have been quite interesting and different to be involved in.””It’s a very tactical format, which makes it a good test for the captains and coaches who have to be able to think on their feet and adjust strategies depending on the situations. It has created a few novel situations.”However, where Davis feels a two-innings set-up could really benefit the game would to even up day-night one-day matches where the toss can have a major influence at grounds affected by dew. Davis remembered his experiences of playing domestic cricket in South Africa where batting under lights can become a hazard.”It would certainly even up the contest under lights,” he said. “I remember playing in South Africa, at places like Centurion and Durban, where you could basically win the toss and win the match because one team had 50 overs when the ball was zipping around all over the place. Split innings would certainly help balance that out.”Whitticase, meanwhile, has experienced what splitting an innings can do for a batsman who is in full flow when the first 20 overs ends. “We had a young guy on 48 in the first game and then he had stop and field for 20 overs,” he said. “He then needed to play himself in again and although he got fifty he said he didn’t feel as though he’d really earned it.”Angus Porter, the chief executive of the Professional Cricketers’ Association, suggested it would be quite a while until the format was considered for first team cricket in England.”I think it’s highly unlikely that the version we are playing in the second XI this year will get transferred across to the first XI competition,” he told the . “Players are enjoying it but what I think they are saying is ‘we’re not quite sure exactly where this particular experiment is taking us’.”The initial feedback from that experiment is that everyone is up for trying new things but that this one doesn’t actually seem to improve the game from a playing or a spectator point of view.”

Australia steal thrilling win in 1st ODI

Half-centuries to Jess Cameron and Shelley Nitschke kept Australia in the series as they snatched a two-wicket win from the final ball of the first ODI

Half-centuries to Jess Cameron and Shelley Nitschke kept Australia in the series as they snatched a two-wicket win from the final ball of the first ODI in Queenstown. Chasing New Zealand’s 228 for 6, Australia were in difficulty a couple of times before the tail-enders Erin Osborne and Julie Hunter were able to seal a thrilling result.Australia’s chase was healthy when Nitschke was in charge, but she departed for 51 as part of a collapse of 3 for 3 that left them at 90 for 5. Sophie Devine (2 for 63) had picked up Sarah Elliott when she forced Nitschke into a catch for the wicketkeeper Rachel Priest. The game seemed over but Cameron turned up and kept the visitors in sight of the total, with them needing 27 off the final four overs. However, Ellyse Perry departed for 27 and Cameron went in the penultimate over for 68 off 81, leaving Osborne and Hunter seeking 16 from nine deliveries. They whittled down the target and wanted four off the last ball, with Hunter finding the boundary off Devine.New Zealand had struggled to 85 for 5 after winning the toss but life became easier once Victoria Lind was joined by Sophie Devine. The pair put on 74 in 15.3 overs before Lind was out for 68 off 100 and then Devine sped forward with Nicola Brown as the innings concluded.Devine, who has been a big problem for the Australians, was unbeaten on 74 off 82, with two sixes, while Brown had 26 off 24. Perry had the best figures with 2 for 44 of 10 while Sarah Andrews, Hunter and Nitschke gained one victim each.New Zealand have ruled the Twenty20s, winning all five at home and away over the past month, but Australia took their recent advantage in the 50-over games to 6-0. New Zealand currently lead the home Rose Bowl series 2-1, following their Twenty20 successes, and the second and third ODIs will be played in Invercargill on Saturday and Sunday.

Everton system change possible

Everton journalist Adam Jones reckons Rafael Benitez could switch to a 4-3-3 formation with Richarlison up front for the visit of Arsenal on Monday night.

The lowdown

Everton are looking to halt a dreadful run of form that has seen them win just one of their last 10 matches.

They’ve taken seven losses in that period, slipping to 16th in the Premier League table.

Benitez has almost always set out his team in a 4-4-1-1 formation since taking over at Goodison Park in the summer.

The Spaniard was criticised for maintaining a midfield two against Liverpool last time out, with one journalist arguing it was a move that ‘gave the game’ to the visitors and an analytics expert confessing himself ‘baffled’.

The latest

The Liverpool Echo’s Jones writes that Benitez ‘could opt’ for a change of system that would see Fabian Delph drafted into the midfield alongside Allan and Abdoulaye Doucoure, while Richarlison would serve as a lone number nine.

He points out that there have already been glimpses of this shape in the games against Wolves and Tottenham Hotspur, and says it seems to be ‘the most effective right now’.

The verdict

Delph may not be the most popular player amongst the Goodison supporters, but he put in a strong performance in that game against Conte’s Spurs, earning a SofaScore rating of 7.3/10.

He won four of his six ground duels and completed eight of the 10 long balls he attempted.

The Press Association’s Carl Markham called his display ‘excellent’, while The Daily Mail’s Dominic King dubbed him the team’s man of the match ‘by some considerable distance’.

Perhaps recalling the £80,000-per-week midfielder, and reinstating the 4-3-3 shape, could be a smart move.

In other news, fans flocked to this news on a possible Benitez replacement.
