Celtic: Expert thinks Jota could be out for seven weeks

Injury expert Ben Dinnery thinks Celtic attacker Jota could be out for a total of seven weeks with his hamstring issue, Football Insider report.

The Lowdown: Jota’s absence

Celtic are expected to sign the 22-year-old on a permanent deal before the end of the season in a £6.5m transfer.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-18/” title=”Celtic updates!!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Portuguese winger has been involved in 14 goals in 18 appearances, however, he’s missed the last two games with a hamstring issue.

Ange Postecoglou has ruled Jota out of the League Cup final against Hibernian later this month, as shared by Sky Sports, and it seems as if he could miss the entire festive period and New Year.

The Latest: Dinnery’s comments

Injury expert Dinnery was talking to Football Insider regarding Jota’s timeframe on the sidelines.

This is what he had to say in reply, believing Jota, labelled as ‘explosive’ by Alan Hutton, could return following the winter break, meaning he’d have missed seven weeks of action after he picked up the problem on December 2 against Hearts.

“Look, it’s very much touch and go. It depends on the player’s response to treatment.

“We talk about external factors maybe influencing a possible return to play. Should Celtic go on a run and they keep winning games, then the pressures to maybe throw Jota back in the team lessens almost.

“You’re making that decision. Why take any chances? Why throw anybody in there?

“Two or three weeks? Yeah, but I think those decisions will be probably taken game week to game week. There will always be context to those decisions.

“If a player is returning and he does decide to sort of throw him back in, then you could be looking at maybe just minutes from the bench.

“With a return to maybe like a full, proper training during that winter break.”

The Verdict: Not ideal…

Should Dinnery’s prediction on Jota prove accurate, it could prove to be a blow, but possibly the correct decision.

Giorgos Giakoumakis has struggled to get his Parkhead career going, whereas Albian Ajeti and Kyogo Furuhashi went off on Thursday against Real Betis, also with hamstring issues.

That means Postecoglou’s attacking options could be extremely limited ahead of the winter break with some crucial games before then.

The only good news to come from Jota’s time on the sidelines could be the possibility of making his move permanent, with Dinnery thinking he could be without Jota for a total of seven weeks.

Rangers fans slam James Tavernier v Sparta

Many Glasgow Rangers fans have been slamming the performance of James Tavernier despite their 2-0 win at home to Sparta Prague on Thursday night.

Two goals from Alfredo Morelos were enough to give Giovanni van Bronckhorst his first win as manager at Ibrox, a result which means that they will definitely finish second in the group and go into the next knockout round due to their superior head-to-head record against the Czech side.

However, while there were some good performances for the hosts, captain Tavernier would not have been hugely pleased with his efforts.

The right-back failed to record a single dribble, blocked shot, key pass or accurate cross in the match, while he was also guilty of losing possession of the ball on 27 separate occasions, the most by far out of any player on the pitch (SofaScore).

Predicted WBA starting XI v Huddersfield

With the latest international break now out of the way, West Brom’s next Championship test sees them take on Huddersfield Town away from home on Saturday afternoon.

Speaking ahead of the match in his latest press conference, Baggies manager Valerien Ismael revealed that only Dara O’Shea, Kean Bryan and Kenneth Zohore will be unavailable for the match against the Terriers through injury.

With this in mind, here’s how we feel West Brom will line up for the match and what changes Ismael could make from their 1-1 draw against Middlesbrough before the break. We expect three alterations from that line-up.

In goal, it would be hard to see Sam Johnstone not start for the Baggies after playing in all but one of their league games so far this season.

For the back three, we think Ismael will put Clarke back into the side after recovering from the head injury which forced him off the pitch in the early stages of the clash against Middlesbrough. He starts alongside Kyle Bartley, who replaced him in that game, and Cedric Kipre.

We can see Conor Townsend and Darnell Furlong occupying the wing-back positions, with Adam Reach dropping out after he had a mixed display in a left-wing back role against Middlesbrough.

In midfield, now that both Alex Mowatt and club captain Jake Livermore are back fit again, we imagine that Ismael would want to get them both back on the pitch ahead of Jayson Molumby and Robert Snodgrass, who is currently earning a weekly wage of £24k-per-week according to Salary Sport, dropping down to the substitutes’ bench.

At the top of the pitch, we think Ismael will stick with the same front three which started against Middlesbrough. with Karlan Grant and Grady Diangana, who scored in the 1-1 draw, on either side of Callum Robinson in the middle, who netted in Ireland’s recent 3-0 win over Luxembourg.

Mohamed Elyounoussi struggled vs Watford

Southampton secured a vital victory on Saturday with a 1-0 win over Watford thanks to a goal from Che Adams that secured all three points for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side, taking them up to 14th place in the Premier League table with 11 points prior to Sunday’s fixtures.

Despite the positive result, one player that we feel didn’t have a good game against the Hornets was Saints winger Mohamed Elyounoussi.

The winger, who started the match at Vicarage Road but was taken off after 70 minutes to be replaced by Stuart Armstrong, managed to have just 30 touches of the ball and completed 11 out of the 20 passes at a success rate of just 55%.

He didn’t attempt one cross, failed to accurately complete any of his five long balls and then didn’t even manage a shot at goal.

On top of that, he lost possession ten times which ultimately earned him an overall match rating of 6.7/10, making him the lowest-rated Saints player that started the match according to SofaScore.

Taking this into account, it’s safe to say Elyounoussi was not at the same level as his teammates on the day and let Hasenhuttl down with his performance.

So far this season, the 27-year-old, who is currently valued at £10.8m according to Transfermarkt, has started all but one of Southampton’s eight previous Premier League games, in which he has managed to score just one goal which came during the club’s 2-2 draw against Newcastle United in Elyounoussi’s first league appearance of the season.

Since joining the Saints back in the 2018 summer transfer window from FC Basel for a reported fee of £16m, the winger has gone on to make 28 appearances for the club, scoring four goals and providing two assists across all competitions.

Moving forward, we feel that it could be beneficial for the team if Hasenhuttl wielded the axe and took Elyounoussi out of the team for their next few fixtures to give Armstrong a shot from the start after recovering from a calf injury to see if he can have more of a significant impact on the team.

Everton transfer news on Diaz

It has now been revealed how close Everton were to signing Luis Diaz in the summer transfer window, ahead of another potential move in January.

The Lowdown: Talks

The Goodison Park faithful had reportedly held initial talks with Luiz over a potential move to the Merseyside club.

However, those discussions stalled very late on in the window, and in the end he stayed at FC Porto.

The Latest: Offer made

As per A Bola (via Sport Witness), Rafa Benitez’s side ‘really got ahead’ with an offer of €30m (£25.8m) plus James Rodriguez on loan to sign Diaz, but the former Real Madrid star was ‘turned down’ by Porto manager Sergio Conceicao and the board.

They were ‘pressed’ by their need to raise some cash, but considered that his market value would grow in the future, and so did not feel that it was the right time to sell.

The Verdict: Return in January

With Rodriguez now set to join Al Rayyan, he would not be able to be included in any part of a deal for Diaz in January.

However, providing that enough finances are available, that should not stop the Toffees from returning with another offer, as it seems he was a top target for Benitez and co if they were willing to stump up close to £30m.

The Colombia international has been on fire so far this season with five goals and an assist in six games in the Portuguese top flight (Transfermarkt), and is a player that is very capable of replacing Rodriguez in the team.

At 24 years of age, he will only get better too, and now is certainly the best time to buy given his likely increase in market value.

Vermeulen back in Zimbabwe squad

Mark Vermeulen: back in favour with Zimbabwe Cricket © AFP

Mark Vermeulen’s rehabilitation is almost complete. A little over a year ago he was in court facing up to 25 years in prison after an arson attack which destroyed Zimbabwe’s cricket academy. But he was acquitted of that charge on the grounds of mental illness, and today he was named in the Zimbabwe A squad to tour Namibia next month.Vermeulen, who turns 30 on March 2, played the last of his eight Tests and 32 ODIs in December 2004, but could yet add to that tally if this comeback proves a success. He has been named alongside other players who have had a taste of senior cricket such as Charles Coventry, Tafadzwa Kamungozi, Shingi Masakadza, and Regis Chakabva for the tour that runs from March 10-16 in Windhoek. After their first training session at the CFX Academy on Monday, Zimbabwe A coach Steven Mangongo told the ZC website that he is happy with the enthusiasm displayed by the players during the work-out and hopes to pick the right players for the tour of Namibia.”We had our first proper session with the squad in the morning and tomorrow [Tuesday] we are playing the national team and that should give us some points as to where we stand. It is during such practice matches that we hope to be finalizing on the 14 players and three reserves for the tour,” said Mangongo.Aside from his highly publicised misadventure, Vermeulen has a reputation as a difficult character, a trait that stems in part from a sickening head injury he sustained while batting against Irfan Pathan during Zimbabwe’s VB Series campaign in Australia in January 2004. But Magongo said that he was impressed so far by his attitude in training, and hoped that he would sustain the same commitment and hard work.”Mark is a good player whom I am working with to give the side what we believe he can offer,” said Magongo. “His fitness is fine and we are working with getting him the right technique so that he starts scoring runs for the side, something we believe he can do. If that happens, then our reconstruction on his career would be on the right path.”The team leaves on March 10 and will play three ODIs and one Twenty20 during the tour. Mangongo reckons that the level of the national league is low and that eats into the quality of the players produced, so playing associate nations gives them the opportunity to grow.”The best way of judging our strength is, as a Test nation, our A sides should be able to beat the national teams of associate nations such as Namibia. I believe there is no reason our A side should lose to Namibia as it is the only yardstick we can measure our progress with. We are going to Namibia to win and if that does not happen it means we are not doing enough with our A squads,” said Mangongo, who expects to settle on the final 14 players and reserves by Thursday.Zimbabwe A E Chauluka, M Vermuelen, R Chakabva, B Mlambo, T Ngulube, M Mabuza, P Moore, B Chapungu, T Chimbambo, M Waller, C Coventry, R Chinyengetere, S Masakadza, T Garwe, A Manyumwa, P Charumbira, T Maruma, T Kamungozi, N Mushangwe, T Chisoro.
