LFC fans lament Oxlade-Chamberlain rumour

Southampton are rumoured to be keen on signing Liverpool midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain on loan, according to talkSPORT.

The 27-year-old was restricted to just 17 appearances in all competitions last term for the Reds in what was a frustrating campaign disrupted with injury problems. The midfielder has been troubled with various injury concerns in his time at Anfield, having signed for the Reds back in 2017 from Premier League rivals Arsenal.

He would be no stranger to his surroundings if he were to pursue a move to Southampton, having spent his youth career at St Mary’s before breaking into their first-team in 2010.

Southampton finished 15th in the Premier League last season under the management of Ralph Hasenhüttl, and they’re clearly keen to strengthen their midfield options before the summer transfer window reaches a conclusion.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp previously labelled Oxlade-Chamberlain as ‘outstanding’, and the 27-year-old will be hoping he can find regular game-time at Anfield during the 2021/22 campaign.

Plenty of Reds fans took to social media to react to Southampton’s rumoured interest in re-signing the England international this summer. Take a look at some of the reaction from Anfield Watch on Twitter, with some Kopites begging the club to avoid making the “stupid decision” of letting him go out on loan.

Can’t afford to let him go. Before his injury he was looking good. On his day can provide goals from midfield. Would only be able to replace him with a “home grown” player. Who?”

Gerrard should unleash Scott Wright v Malmo

Rangers begin their Champions League qualifying campaign with an away game against Malmo on Tuesday evening, and Steven Gerrard should hand a start Scott Wright.

The Gers travel to Sweden to take on Jon Dahl Tomasson’s side, with just two ties separating the Gers from the Champions League group stage.

It was confirmed earlier this week that the winner of this tie will take on either Ludogorets or  Olympiacos in the play-off round, but Malmo will be far from easy for Gerrard’s side, with the Swedish side responsible for Rangers’ exit the last time they appeared in the Champions League qualifiers in 2011.

Therefore, Rangers will need to be at their best if they are to pick up a positive result at the Eleda Stadium on Tuesday night, and Wright deserves a start after his impressive performance against Livingston at the weekend.

Why should Wright start vs Livingston?

The former Aberdeen man replaced the injury-stricken Ianis Hagi early on and later scored Rangers’ second goal with a superb volleyed finish inside the area. His performance earned him a 7.6 SofaScore rating, the joint-second highest of anyone who featured at Ibrox.

Following the game, Gerrard was full of praise for the 23-year-old’s display and his attitude in pre-season, saying: “Scott could have started today. His performances in pre-season have been outstanding. We’re working on him a lot.

“He’s quick and got his rewards from another strong performance. He’s really in my thinking for Tuesday night.”

The 41-year-old admitted that Hagi might not be fit to start against the Swedish champions, but even if the Romanian does return, Rangers might be best served by starting the Scottish winger on the right-hand side.

The 23-year-old offers the pace and direct running which Hagi doesn’t, and on a night where Rangers might find themselves on the back foot as the away team, speed on the counterattack could be key to Gerrard’s side bringing a positive result back to Ibrox for next week.

Although Malmo only scraped past HJK Helsinki and Riga to earn their place in this stage of the Champions League qualifiers, they have won their last three league games with a cumulative score of 11-0, so will be in a confident mood as they welcome Rangers. However, if Wright gets a start and produces a similar display to Saturday’s win at Ibrox, then he could prove to be Gerrard’s difference-maker in Sweden tonight.

AMIDST confusion over the impasse between the players and the International Cricket Council (ICC) over contracts for next month’s Champions Trophy in Sri Lanka, West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) chief executive Gregory Shillingford confirmed last

Tony Cozier23-Aug-2002AMIDST confusion over the impasse between the players and the International Cricket Council (ICC) over contracts for next month’s Champions Trophy in Sri Lanka, West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) chief executive Gregory Shillingford confirmed last night that not one of the 14 West Indians chosen for the tournament had yet signed."We’ve sent the forms to our representatives in St Lucia and Jamaica (where the players are currently engaged in the Red Stripe Bowl) but none has been signed," Shillingford said. But Shillingford said it was too early to say whether replacements would have to be picked for the 12-team tournament, the so-called mini World Cup that is scheduled to start September 12."The board’s position is that we will give the situation a little more time to sort itself out," he said.Trevor Phillips, president of the St Lucia Cricket Association, who is acting on behalf of the WICB, said he had presented the contracts to the relevant players on the Antigua, Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago Bowl teams but none had been returned."I handed it first to Merv Dillon and he told me that neither he nor the other players would be signing," Phillips said. The contracts were distributed to theplayers in Jamaica by Brian Breese, secretary of the Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA). But Shillingford said none had been returned.Dinanath Ramnarine, the Trinidad and Tobago and West Indies leg-spinner, who is the recently elected president of the West Indies Players Association (WIPA), is also in St Lucia. All efforts to contact him yesterday proved futile.WIPA secretary Roland Holder said in Barbados his body had advised the players against signing the contract on the advice of the Federation of International Cricketers’ Associations (FICA).This is in keeping with the general position of international players upset by the clause preventing them from promoting existing individual sponsors that rival the ICC’s official sponsors for the Champions Trophy and next year’s World Cup in South Africa.Conflicting reportsThere were conflicting reports yesterday on the latest developments in the impasse. The Indian Express newspaper reported that the ICC "admitted it had backed down on the controversial agreement" and confirmed that it would be valid only for the Champions’ Trophy".It quoted an unnamed ICC spokesman in London as stating that it had agreed to the Indian board’s proposal to limit the agreement to the Sri Lanka tournament instead of all ICC events until the 2007 World Cup in the West Indies as originally envisaged."ICC will draw up a fresh agreement for the World Cup in South Africa next year," the spokesman said.At the same time, ICC chief executive Malcolm Speed told reporters in Mumbai, where he was on separate ICC business, that the Indian players "should retract from their stubborn stand for the sake of the game and participate in full strength".Several leading Indian players, among them Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid and Virender Sehwag, have personal agreements with companies that clash with those which have paid huge sums for the rights to the Champions’ Trophy. No player from any country other than India is immediately affected but those from Australia, England, Pakistan and the West Indies have all stood behind the Indians on a matter of principle. The Indian selectors yesterday picked 25 players from whom it would name replacements if it comes to that.In Brisbane, Australian Cricket Board (ACB) chief executive James Sutherland said he was unable to guarantee a full strength team for the Champions’ Trophy. He met with the players and chief executive of the players’ association, Tim May, to discuss the issue last night. May is also joint head of FICA.May said it was impossible to speculate on what the Australian players might decide."We haven’t put any deadlines on them," he said. "They’ve got a lot of new information tonight about what we’ve been negotiating over the last week or so and we want the players to have the appropriate time to consider and digest this information."

Leeds on the verge of signing Amari Miller

Leeds United are on the verge of signing exciting Birmingham City youngster Amari Miller following an update from journalist Mike McGrath.

The Lowdown: Miller linked with Leeds move

Marcelo Bielsa may well be looking to sign experienced players who can immediately become key figures in the team this summer, but he will also hopefully be looking to the years ahead.

While Leeds’ current rise is hugely exciting for supporters, it is vital that the club plan well into the future, ensuring their upward curve doesn’t end abruptly.

Miller, who fits the bill in that respect, has been linked with a move to Elland Road numerous times recently, having shone at Birmingham and made five first team appearances at St Andrew’s.

The Latest: Deal edges closer

According to The Daily Telegraph’s McGrath on Twitter, the 18-year-old has not travelled with his Birmingham teammates for their pre-season trip to Scotland.

It is noted that that is because of Miller’s impending move to Leeds, even though Tottenham, Everton and Southampton have also shown an interest in signing him.

The Verdict: Hugely exciting prospect

Snapping up emerging homegrown talent is generally a positive development and it will be fascinating to see how Miller fares working under Bielsa.

Birmingham boss Lee Bowyer has claimed of the teenager that ‘senior players love him’, so it looks as though the Whites may have a gem on their hands if they can get this transfer over the line.

Assuming the deal goes through, a loan move elsewhere could be likely next season, but hopefully it may not be too long before Leeds fans get to see what all the fuss is about.

Pundit can see Anthony Martial joining Tottenham

Former Premier League striker Dean Windass has told Football FanCast in an exclusive interview that he can see Manchester United’s Anthony Martial joining Tottenham this summer.

Martial’s game time is in danger following the arrival of another attacker in Jadon Sancho, with United confirming on Thursday that they had reached an agreement with Borussia Dortmund to sign the England star.

It leaves someone like Martial, who was not always an automatic starter under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer last season, sweating on his place. And Windass can now imagine the Frenchman at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Speaking exclusively to FFC about the possibility of Martial joining Spurs this summer, the ex-Hull City forward said:

“I could see that happening. They probably know [Harry] Kane’s gone now anyway. That’s probably a done deal with whoever it’s with.

“Martial will be a great fit, bit less pressure on Martial I think. Listen, great player, by the way. I just think his days are numbered at Man United.

“I think he’d be a great fit for Tottenham – bit less pressure on the kid. He’ll probably want to go and enjoy his football.”

Last season was not Martial’s best in front of goal, with the 25-year-old scoring just four times in the Premier League.

But in the words of compatriot Kylian Mbappe, he is still a “talented” player. The France international averaged 1.6 dribbles per league game in the 2020/21 campaign, one of the highest averages in United’s squad (via WhoScored).

ZCO editorial, volume 3 issue 25

Who would have imagined that our national side would be leading the one-day series – against India in India, of all places – by two victories to one? It seems almost unbelievable, and their victory in the third match of the series was most convincing. It must be admitted that India were without their best batsman and bowler, in Sachin Tendulkar and Anil Kumble, respectively, as both are nursing niggling injuries in the effort to get fully fit for their coming tour of West Indies. Their absence would certainly have given Zimbabwe a great psychological boost, and we may well not have won the first match, at least, had either or both been present. It also appeared that India in this series have at times been suffering from overconfidence and have not played with the necessary discipline.Having said that, our most recent victory was won without Andy Flower, resting a thigh injury – the first official international match we have won without him since we beat Australia in the World Cup of 1983, if we want to check the records! The series has also come at a time when we would expect the team to feel distracted by the controversial elections going on back home, where their families were. In view of the results announced by the government, several of the players may well be thinking over their futures. And we did play with the discipline that India lacked, if we overlook the 14 wides bowled in the third match. We can now begin to suspect, with guarded optimism, that Geoff Marsh’s influence is beginning to pay off and the revival of spirit on a more regular basis is returning. One victory in the next two matches would see us win the series, an almost inconceivable thought, and on past experience that pressure may well be too much for our players to handle easily. But even if they are up to it mentally, the odds are still against them, because India have vast resources of talent and they will take the last two matches very, very seriously. Unless, in fact, their nerve has been broken, which would be a surprising state of affairs. It was great also to see two newcomers to the side play such a significant part in our victory. Pommie Mbangwa was playing his first international match for well over a year, and as usual bowled his accurate medium-paced line and length, a style which is at its most effective when the opening bowlers have made an initial breakthrough. And this had indeed been the case, the hero and Man of the Match being Douglas Hondo.Douggie has played one Test and one one-day international before, but on both occasions looked totally unready for it, pushed into international cricket by over-enthusiastic selectors. He had the talent, but it was still too raw. He has spent most of the past season playing club cricket in Australia, and we have published a couple of good reports in ZCO about his progress. On Wednesday’s showing he looked an unrecognizably better bowler. We have had players in the past who have surprised us with a remarkably good performance and then lapsed into anonymity again, but a first time always shows that the ability really is there and gives rise for hope.In this issue we are able to include some more articles by Trishna Bose on Zimbabwe in India, and also the updating of records. We have the new set of records for Zimbabwe v India in Test cricket and also the detailed Test career records of all the Zimbabwean players who took part in the recent Test series.Included also are biographies for three of the Academy players: Andre Hoffman, Innocent Chinyoka and Jordane Nicolle.

Cook to sanction Downes sale

A major update has emerged on Paul Cook’s transfer plans this summer, regarding defensive midfielder Flynn Downes.

What’s the talk?

According to Football Insider, Championship side Barnsley are interested in a deal to sign Ipswich midfielder Flynn Downes this summer. Barnsley are said to be preparing an offer for the Englishman after being impressed with his displays for the Blues in League One.

The report claims that Ipswich manager Paul Cook is willing to cash in on Downes and would not stand in his way if a reasonable bid came in for his services. Downes is heading into the final year of his contract at Portman Road and Barnsley are looking to pounce on the 22-year-old.

Back in 2019, former Ipswich midfielder Matt Holland hailed the “outstanding” midfielder for his performances for the club under Paul Lambert. He told Ipswich’s website, as relayed by the EADT:

“Flynn is a player I’ve known for quite a long time because my son did a bit of training with the academy and I did a bit of coaching here as well.

“Straight away he was one who caught my eye and he was only 10 or 11 years old. I thought he had the temperament and character to go a long way, as well as the ability and talent of course.

“He’s proving that again this season and I think he’s been absolutely outstanding – a key player for Paul Lambert.”

Fans will be livid

Ipswich fans will be livid at this news for several reasons.

Downes is a long-time servant to Ipswich and has been at the club since he was seven, joining the academy in 2006 and making his first-team debut in 2017 against Birmingham in the Championship. T

his means that Cook could be about to let one of the club’s academy products go, which could anger fans who are attached to local players more than those who come in from other clubs in England or from abroad.

Downes has also been a shining light on the pitch for Ipswich. The 22-year-old averaged an excellent WhoScored rating of 6.98 in 10 starts as a defensive midfielder in League One. He averaged 2.8 tackles and interceptions per game for Ipswich, which is skewed by seven substitute appearances lowering his numbers.

That shows that he is adept at winning the ball back for his side. Therefore, he is a quality defensive midfield option at this level and could be a key player for Cook next season if he remains in Suffolk.

The £2.3k-per-week beast has plenty of room to improve at such a young age. Downes turned 22 in January and could be a player with more scope for development, but Ipswich fans will not be able to watch that happen at Portman Road if Cook sells him this summer.

They could miss out on potentially watching him flourish as a player and that could leave Ipswich fans livid at this sale if it goes through as reported, which is why Cook is headed for a disaster with this decision.

AND in other news, Ashton facing disaster with “flourishing” £1.9k-p/w ace, Ipswich fans will be gutted…
