Conte wants Stefan de Vrij at Tottenham

Antonio Conte has already named one player he’d like to sign at Tottenham Hotspur, according to emerging reports…

What’s the word?

Football Insider claimed that the 51-year-old has suggested his former Inter Milan defender Stefan de Vrij during negotiations to become Spurs’ next manager.

It is thought that the north London outfit are becoming increasingly confident of sealing the former Chelsea boss, and with a centre-back said to be among the top priorities, Conte has put his weight behind a player he knows well.

The Serie A champions have big financial problems, which is part of the reason why the Italian departed having only just won the league title, so they could be forced to sell some big stars, including the 29-year-old mainstay.

De Vrij is believed to be rated around £45m, with two years still remaining on his contract at the San Siro.

Get it done, Levy

Conte has a big task at his hands as Spurs’ squad is in drastic need of a major overhaul, especially defensively, where the root of all their problems seems to lie.

As explained perfectly by The Athletic and football.london during Jose Mourinho’s tenure, individual mistakes and a clear lack of cohesion in the backline were the woefully defining theme of their disappointing campaign.

It’s no wonder that Football Insider claim that the likes of Davinson Sanchez could be sold in order to raise funds this summer. He and Eric Dier were deemed “one of the worst partnerships in the Premier League” by former Spurs midfielder turned talkSPORT pundit Jamie O’Hara back in February.

It’s interesting that Conte is said to rate De Vrij higher than long-term Steve Hitchen target Milan Skriniar, who came close to joining the north Londoners last summer and again in January.

If chairman Daniel Levy wants to take Spurs onto the next level, merely appointing a nine-time trophy winner isn’t going to be enough. He needs solid backing in the transfer market, especially when it comes to defensive additions.

Conte, as per the report, wants to sign his former Dutch colossus, and Levy must deliver him as he’d be a clear upgrade at centre-back.

The 44-cap beast was a regular in his Inter side that romped to the Serie A title with a whopping 12-point cushion. No side conceded fewer goals than his defence, either. He started 39 matches in all competitions and rated out as one of Conte’s best ball-playing options (93.8% pass success).

ESPN columnist David Amoyal waxed lyrical about the 6 foot 2 powerhouse only two months ago, claiming he was “one of the most underrated players in Serie A and even on his own team” and that he was the “anchor of [Inter’s defensive] unit.”

De Vrij was also dubbed a “monster” during his time at Lazio by their former defender Mauricio. He said to ESPN (via Football Italia): “Stefan is a great defender and deserves to be at a big club. He’s very tall, he’s strong and fast, he runs a lot – he’s a monster! He also has excellent technique and knows how to play the ball like few others, and that’s the difference between him and other players. He’s a calm defender who never gets agitated.”

Evidently, the Inter star would be a fine addition to Spurs, and if Conte truly does want him, that should be enough for Levy to pull the trigger. He must sanction this deal once the 51-year-old walks through the door.

It’s the sort of double swoop which could put the north Londoners back on the map.

AND in other news, Levy could rock Spurs’ squad by appointing 51 y/o “genius” whose “words assault you”…

Pundit unhappy with treatment of Leeds hero

Marcelo Bielsa’s decision to leave out Illan Meslier at the end of the season was ‘really harsh’, according to former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan.

The Lowdown: Meslier left out by Bielsa

The Whites goalkeeper was one of his side’s outstanding players in 2020/21, starting 35 Premier League games and playing a key role in them finishing in ninth place.

Meslier was axed for Leeds’ final two matches of 2020/21, however, with Kiko Casilla starting against both Southampton and West Brom.

The Latest: Whelan unhappy with decision

It seemed a slightly baffling decision by Bielsa, considering what a consistent player the Frenchman has been throughout the campaign, and someone who wasn’t impressed was Whelan.

He told Football Insider that it felt needless on the manager’s part:

“Meslier deserved to play, there is absolutely no doubt about that in my mind. It is really harsh on him to not get to play in front of the fans after the season he has had. He’s been brilliant.

“Bielsa will have sat down and spoken to him regarding the decision before the game. He is a level-headed player so I think he will have taken it on the chin and moved on.

“I hope he understood Bielsa’s reasoning for leaving him out, whatever they were.”

The Verdict: Water under the bridge

There is unlikely to be any great issue between Bielsa and Meslier, so this is more than likely something that has been blown out of proportion.

That being said, it made little sense to take out such a key player at the end of the campaign, especially when European football wasn’t completely out of the question.

Leeds won both games, of course, so Bielsa will feel vindicated in his decision, but the greater worry may be the exit links that have emerged for the young Frenchman in the past few months, which are bound to intensify with the summer window now looming.

West Ham fans flock to Pereira claim

According to a report by the Express, via West Ham Central, GSB and the club have identified West Bromwich Albion ace Matheus Pereira as a possible target this summer if they don’t manage to secure Jesse Lingard on a permanent deal.

Lingard has been in sensational form for the Irons since signing on loan from Old Trafford in January, scoring nine goals and assisting three others in 13 Premier League starts (WhoScored).

This has resulted in West Ham desiring to make his move a permanent one with it said to be a major priority for the club this summer.

However, as an alternative target should they fail to make an agreement, GSB and co could move for West Brom attacker Pereira – with the Irons seemingly identifying a possible coup thanks to his side’s relegation.

By comparison, the 25-year-old has bagged 10 goals and five assists for the Baggies as a real shining light in their team.

Será o quarto confronto do ano.

Leeds should move for Rangers star Glen Kamara

Leeds have been backed to make a summer move for Rangers star Glen Kamara amid reports linking Marcelo Bielsa’s side with a move.

What’s the story?

Reports in recent weeks and months have suggested that the Finland international is on the radar of the Premier League side, and now, former Leeds man Noel Whelan has thrown his backing behind a potential summer move.

He said: “He brings quality, Steven Gerrard recognises how important he is to Rangers. That’s why he wants to tie him down on a new contract. Good players will always be looked at and that’s the problem.

“What he’ll bring is energy, aggression, quality passing and Marcelo Bielsa likes players with energy, players who can get around the field. He would bring those fitness levels and also quality and competition to that midfield position.”

Shrewd signing for Bielsa

After coming through the academy at Arsenal, Kamara has developed into a fine central midfielder at Rangers, really shining in his time in Scottish football.

His former manager at Dundee, Neil McCann, said: “He looks small but he’s strong and he’s a playmaker. When Rangers signed Glen, I sat there thinking he would smash it. Glen will end up back in the English Premier League. I’ve no doubts about that.”

“He isn’t a big, physical lad but he’s made of iron and really strong. I knew immediately that he could handle the ball under pressure and not give it away, so he was perfect. He’s a special talent. He’s lightning-quick but he doesn’t show it. He’s a player who takes instruction well.”

With his ability to play as a holding midfielder or someone slightly further forward, Kamara has got all the tools in his locker to be a superb foil alongside Kalvin Phillips.

Whether Bielsa decides to partner the two together as a more defensive presence, or give one of the two the licence to roam further forward, Leeds could be onto a real shrewd midfield partnership by signing Kamara this summer.

Meanwhile, Leeds are interested in signing this “Rolls-Royce of a player”…

Predicted WBA XI v LCFC - team, injury news

West Brom will be looking to continue their rich vein of form as they aim to close the gap towards Premier League safety when they head to nearby rivals Leicester City this evening.

The Baggies have now won back-to-back games in an emphatic nature, dispatching Europe-chasing Chelsea 5-2 before dismantling Southampton with another three goals last time out.

Sam Allardyce’s side have had well over a week to recover from that too, so should be fresher than the Foxes, who too come into this on the back of a win over the Saints, knocking them out of the FA Cup semi-finals on Sunday.

So, will the 66-year-old be tempted to tinker a winning formula? Well, here’s our predicted XI along with the latest team and injury news from the Hawthorns camp…

Despite a run of form that has seen the Baggies lose just once in their last four matches, Big Sam could be tempted into two changes from last week’s win.

Following the match, there were injury concerns over skipper Kyle Bartley and Arsenal loanee Ainsley Maitland-Niles, though it appears that both have come through training unscathed this week.

However, with a crucial run-in, it would not be surprised to see the latter given an extra game of rest – or at least from the off – especially as Allardyce has Conor Gallagher at his disposal too.

The Chelsea starlet could slot right in alongside Okay Yokuslu at the base of midfield, with Matheus Pereira playing slightly more advanced.

Bartley, as captain, is likely to start and he could partner Semi Ajayi at the back.

The 27-year-old was an unfortunate casualty of his system change against the Saints. They may be deployed in a back four, so there’s a big call to make on Dara O’Shea. He also doesn’t warrant an absence from the starting XI.

The versatile Irishman may slot across to right-back at the expense of Darnell Furlong whilst Conor Townsend continues on the other side.

Further up the pitch on the wings, we’re expecting the in-form Callum Robinson, who has found the net three times in the last two games, and Matty Phillips to keep their place despite the likes of Karlan Grant and Grady Diangana eager for game time.

Mbaye Diagne should continue to lead the line, too.

Rangers: Fans react to club update

Fans of Glasgow Rangers have been reacting to a post on Twitter, in which the Gers relayed news regarding their upcoming clash at Ibrox.

With Rangers having already wrapped up the Scottish Premiership title this season, should the Gers overcome their bitter rivals in the fourth round of the Scottish Cup, Gerrard’s side will undoubtedly be favourites to go on and win the competition, which would see the club secure a memorable double.

Gers fans gutted at Patterson news

Glasgow Rangers fans are gutted after Steven Gerrard revealed Nathan Patterson is a doubt for this weekend’s Old Firm Derby.

The Gers will travel to Parkhead on Sunday to face their fierce rivals Celtic. While they have already won the Premiership title, the Ibrox outfit are still on course to go the season unbeaten (BBC), so they will still be eager to get a positive result especially after their Europa League defeat on Thursday.

However, Gerrard has provided an injury blow ahead of the clash. He has revealed Patterson is a doubt for the match, and they therefore may be without him. The 19-year-old started the game against Slavia Prague in midweek, but he was taken off after 78 minutes to be replaced by Jack Simpson.

With James Tavernier already out injured, no Patterson would leave Gerrard dangerously short at right-back. The news was shared on the Gers official Twitter account, and the fans took to the social media platform to share their displeasure.
