Chigumbura suspension a big blow – Masakadza

Zimbabwe stand-in captain Hamilton Masakadza has described the suspension of in-form batsman and captain Elton Chigumbura as a ”big blow” for his team ahead of the second ODI on Friday. He, however, said that this will allow the reserve players to step up and grab their opportunity.Chigumbura was suspended for two ODIs for maintaining a slow-over rate during the first ODI. He scored 117 off 95 balls to give Zimbabwe an outside chance of chasing down Pakistan’s 375, but the visitors lost their way, finishing on 334 for 5. Zimbabwe will also be missing the services of Craig Ervine, who sustained a hamstring injury, and will be out for the remaining two ODIs. Masakadza last captained Zimbabwe in ODIs in 2009 and also in three games on the previous tour to Pakistan in 2008 when the visitors lost all matches.”Obviously it’s a big blow on both fronts, in terms of the way he’s been batting and also in terms of his leadership out there on the field,” Masakadza said. “But what’s being done is done, we have to move on from here and hopefully the guys sitting out step up and fill in his shoes. But still we can give Pakistan a tough time as the guys that are sitting out are waiting to have their chance and go out there, so whoever gets fit can step up and play well.”Zimbabwe, who are yet to win a game on the tour, have tested the Pakistan but haven’t seized the key moments. “Obviously we haven’t played bad cricket, we’ve got into good positions at times, it’s just a matter of working to make sure we get into the same positions but making sure we try and follow through with better results.”The main thing is the wicket has been very good to bat on, it’s been batter-friendly conditions so we expect a lot of high scores, so it’s not a real reflection of our bowling as it’s just the conditions. It has been really warm, but I don’t think the heat has made too much of a difference because both T20s were played at night, so it’s only in the first one-dayer that we fielded during the day which was quite warm, but I don’t think that’s been really the difference, we just haven’t been upto our skills level to finish the games off.”Pakistan, on the other hand are eyeing their first series win in last 17 months after the 3-2 victory over Sri Lanka in December 2013. Captain Azhar Ali stressed on the importance of victory. “Winning the series not only keeps our chances alive in Champions Trophy but also allows us to win a series after long time. So every match is important for many reasons but the Champions Trophy is the target on our minds.”Azhar was not too perturbed on Chigumbura missing out the remaining ODIs and said that Pakistan would stick to their best to beat Zimbabwe. “I think he played a very good innings [in the first ODI] but as opponents we don’t bother whether he plays or not. We have to be at our best. Its unfortunate because he is their main player and is in good form so there will be advantage for us. He was their captain as well so its a big loss for Zimbabwe. Obviously as opponents we wanted a full Zimbabwe side but its an advantage for us and we would like to capitalise on it.”In both the T20s Zimbabwe scored over 170 and came within 41 runs of chasing 375 in the first ODI. Apart from Wahab Riaz, who bowled his 10 overs for 47 runs, the other fast bowlers were expensive – Mohammad Sami conceded 63 in 7 overs while Anwar Ali leaked 81 in 10.”Our batting is doing very well but if you look the pitches are very good for batting so sometimes it gets tough for bowlers,” Azhar said. “We need improvement in bowling. Ball was slipping out of the hands and it was tough to bowl yorkers, because it got wet because of the dew. I think conditions were tough for the bowlers. May be we gave away more runs and needed to get them out for less but conditions were tough for bowlers.”When asked why Sami and Anwar couldn’t emulate Wahab, Azhar said, “It comes to strength, the way Wahab did well with short balls and that suits him. He did well under these conditions and you may feel that other bowlers do not have that ability and that’s why you had a difference.”Sami is on a comeback and has been bowling well in domestic cricket for one or two years so we will have to give him time as we have brought him back. We can’t doubt his ability as he bowled well with the new ball and troubled the batsmen but couldn’t do well in the second spell.”

Glamorgan work to do in push for record

Glamorgan’s push for what would be a record-breaking victory was held up by a combination of determined batting and rain on the third day of the Division Two match against Derbyshire at Chesterfield

Glamorgan’s push for what would be a record-breaking victory was held up by a combination of determined batting and rain on the third day of the Division Two match against Derbyshire at Chesterfield. When the weather closed in with 23 overs still to bowl, Derbyshire were 37 without loss following-on, still 121 runs away from avoiding an innings defeat and with a lot of batting ahead of them to deny Glamorgan five consecutive championship victories for the first time in their history. The home side fell nine short of the follow-on target when they were bowled out for 252 with opener Billy Godleman the only batsmen to pass 50 while seamer Ruaidhri Smith returned career-best figures of three for 23 in 11 overs. The leaden skies at the start of play made conditions good for bowling and Derbyshire were soon in trouble as the ball swung for Graham Wagg and Michael Hogan.Derbyshire needed a substantial stand between Godleman and skipper Wayne Madsen but that was ended in the fourth over of the morning when Hogan found some late movement to have Madsen caught at third slip for 24.Godleman’s resistance ended when Wagg swung one back in and when Wes Durston was squared up in the former Derbyshire all-rounder’s next over, the home side had lost three wickets for seven runs in 17 balls.Shiv Thakor and Alex Hughes added 44 in 17 overs but David Lloyd had Hughes taken at second slip and Thakor should have gone on 17 in the next over from Craig Meschede but Hogan spilled a low chance at third slip.Smith accounted for Harvey Hosein and Tony Palladino and when Thakor skied a sweep at Andrew Salter, Tom Taylor tore into Hogan, pulling and driving him for three sixes before the Australian bowled him on the stroke of tea. With conditions unsettled and still favourable for bowling, Glamorgan immediately enforced the follow on but Godleman and Hamish Rutherford were largely untroubled in the 18 overs before bad light resulted in the sixth and final stoppage of the day.It was a frustrating end for Glamorgan, but skipper Jacques Rudolph said: “I thought the way we bowled in those last 17 overs we deserved one or two wickets. They played really well but I still think the game is wide open and if we start well in the morning we can put them under some real pressure.”Madsen said: “I think with the forecast being fair tomorrow we are going to have to bat most of the day which is possible. We batted for 80 odd overs in the first innings and we will probably have to bat for over 110 and get ahead so the realistic objective for us is to try and bat through the day.”

Victoria roll Queensland for 190 to seize advantage

Victoria steadied in their quest to secure top spot on the Sheffield Shield table and a “home” final by rolling out Queensland cheaply on day one of the match at the Gabba. Having bowled out the Bulls for 190, the Bushrangers lost one wicket in the short passage of play before stumps. The Bushrangers had subsided to an innings defeat at the hands of bottom-placed Tasmania in Hobart last week, but excelled on a Brisbane surface that offered some assistance to the pacers to keep the Bulls from creeping any closer to their perch at the head of the competition table.Scott Boland took a well-deserved four-for for the visitors, and had strong support from Jake Reed, Chris Tremain, Marcus Stoinis, Dan Christian and the wrist spinner Fawad Ahmed. No Bulls batsman did better than Sam Heazlett’s 45, but Matt Renshaw, Charlie Hemphrey and Chris Lynn will all be irritated about squandering starts. Allrounder James Hopes provided some late resistance with a hard-hitting 36 to push the Bulls close to the 200 mark.Left with an awkward session to negotiate before the close, Victoria lost Travis Dean when he shouldered arms to Peter George and was bowled. Nevertheless, they would surely have been the far happier team at stumps.

> VEJA A TABELA DO BRASILEIRÃO

Casou tudo – destaca.

Narine claims he was mocked by Trinidad official for 'pelting'

Sunil Narine has written to the National League Representatives (NLR) after allegedly being mocked by Trinidad & Tobago Cricket Board (TTCB) president Azim Bassarath

Sunil Narine was suspended after being reported by the umpires for throwing during West Indies’ tour of Sri Lanka•AFP

West Indies offspinner Sunil Narine has written to the National League Representatives (NLR) asking for an independent probe into whether an email that mocked him for “pelting” was sent by Trinidad & Tobago Cricket Board (TTCB) president Azim Bassarath.Narine, who was banned from bowling in international cricket on November 29, had undergone biometric testing at Loughborough University after being reported for a suspect action during the third ODI of West Indies’ tour of Sri Lanka earlier that month. In his letter to the six-member NLR, a copy of which has been seen by ESPNcricinfo, Narine claimed that Bassarath’s email had been sent on the very same day as his ban to various TTCB officials, including executive member Baldath Mahabir.”If indeed the letter came from Mr Bassarath and I have to stress the ‘if’ right now, it seems that he must have long believed that my bowling action was illegal,” Narine wrote.”There was such venom and almost joy in my being suspended that was evident in the email which said, “Let him start to Bowl !!!!!! He was not turning much in d first place!!!!! Straight ball and faster one all the time. !!!! PELTING !!!!!!!”But in a TTCB media release sent this week Bassarath strongly denied he had sent the alleged email. Bassarath also stressed that he would take legal recourse if the email was attributed to his name in the local media. In the immediate aftermath of his suspension, Narine claimed to have received a sympathetic email from TTCB chief executive Sooraj Ragoonath, a copy of which was sent to Bassarath, extending the board’s support to the offspinner and, soon afterwards, inviting Narine to play in the Nagico Super 50, the regional ODI tournament in which he had been the leading wicket-taker last year. However on December 18, Ragoonath wrote back, saying the WICB would not allow “any person who is debarred by the ICC” to participate in regional tournaments until cleared and that the TTCB had withdrawn Narine from the one-day squad. Narine was subsequently barred from entering the T&T players’ enclosure by the ground security at Queen’s Park Oval.”It was a time of extreme stress for me and I was grateful when I received an email from Suruj Ragoonath, the CEO of the Trinidad & Tobago Cricket Board, which contained the promise to provide me ‘with all the necessary support’ and invited me to a meeting to discuss how the TTCB could assist me and to get an idea of the support I would require,” Narine wrote.Instead, Narine said that he was taken totally aback on learning that the TTCB was contemplating banning him from bowling in club cricket in T&T. At a TTCB meeting chaired by Bassarath, Narine said, “An attempt was made to change the rules of the national tournament to prevent players suspended by the ICC from participating at the national level.”Responding to Narine’s allegation, Bassarath, through a TTCB release titled ‘Email link denied’, issued by the board’s media manager, stated, “Mr Bassarath wishes to totally disassociate himself from the alleged email currently making the rounds and which is being pronounced upon to suggest that it is authentic.”The president of the TTCB reserves the right to seek legal recourse to clear his name should the alleged email be attributed to him in reports carried in the local media,” the release read.Narine concluded, “Even though I seem to have been denied natural justice by the writer of the email which accused me of “pelting”, I believe that an independent investigation should be undertaken to determine, if it was not Mr Bassarath himself, who indeed was the person who sent the Emails using Mr Bassarath’s known and familiar email address as well as Mr Baldath Mahabir.”The NLR comprises six members elected by the local T&T clubs, and they sit on the TTCB. The members of the NLR are: Dinanath Ramnarine, Daren Ganga, Giles Antoine, Andre Lawrence, Anil Kamal and Clint Pamphille.

Du Plessis wants to keep T20 captaincy

Faf du Plessis has committed to staying on as South Africa’s T20 captain, even though the next World T20 is four years away

Firdose Moonda29-Mar-20163:53

‘SA stars will feel this missed opportunity’

Faf du Plessis has committed to staying on as South Africa’s T20 captain even though the next World T20 is four years away. Du Plessis, who is 31, considers himself “on the right side of 30,” to keep playing international cricket in the foreseeable future.Du Plessis is one of four South African players to have reached 1,000 T20 runs – the others being JP Duminy, AB de Villiers and Hashim Amla – and has led them since February 2013. All four players play in all three formats and are among a group that also includes Dale Steyn and Imran Tahir, who are expected to give up some formats of the game in the near future.”The wrong side of 30 would be over 35. I am 31. That’s the right side of 30 and see myself playing a big role,” du Plessis said. “I haven’t thought of stopping playing T20 cricket. I feel my performances speak for themselves.”Du Plessis fined for dissent

South Africa captain Faf du Plessis has been fined 50 percent of his match fee after he was found guilty of showing dissent at an umpire’s decision. It is his second such offence in 12 months – the first came against India in Chennai in October 2015 – and a third before October 2016 would lead to a suspension.
The incident had occurred during South Africa’s final World T20 match against Sri Lanka, when du Plessis was ruled lbw by umpire S Ravi in the 13th over. Replays later indicated that there was an inside edge before ball hit the pad. An ICC release said Du Plessis showed dissent “by occupying the crease for a period of time before leaving the field while looking at his bat and shaking his head.” After the match, du Plessis admitted to the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by Match referee Jeff Crowe.

After South Africa completed their World T20 campaign with a facile victory over Sri Lanka in Delhi, du Plessis suggested de Villiers was fully committed to all formats but told reporters they would have to ask Steyn himself if he wants to continue. Amla had earlier in the week claimed South Africa’s big names still had more to offer and du Plessis has put his name on the list of those who do.”I love captaining South Africa. I think some of the players, yes, won’t be there in four years,” he said. “But there won’t be a lot of T20 cricket in the next while. So we can look at it in terms of a few younger guys coming through and building for the future. It’s impossible to look four years ahead. It’s an incredibly long time but for now I am loving playing T20 cricket and loving captaining South Africa.”South Africa are not scheduled to play their next T20s until a home series against Sri Lanka in January 2017, which means du Plessis will not have to take on much of a leadership role before then while CSA will also undergo an extensive post-season review. Still, he hopes that the progress the T20 side had made in the last few months – which included series wins over Bangladesh India and England – will not be forgotten and they can use that as a springboard to develop their other formats.”The T20 side has been very successful of late. We didn’t produce at an ICC tournament. The T20 World Cup is a tough one. Your easy game is supposed to be Afghanistan and they are just as good in these conditions,” he said. “Our ODI side has also team has improved a lot. Two years ago we were in a bit of a hole and we rebuilt the side, now the Test side is there.”South Africa have come through one of their least successful periods with defeats in successive Test series and the bubble bursting on the fine limited-overs form they built up. Du Plessis believes the foundations for fixing things are there, they just need some fine-tuning.”In terms of ticking the boxes we had all areas covered. We had great variety in pace bowling. We had different combinations to play. We had great spin options, all round options. Everything was there,” he said. “It was just a case of how to you deliver on the day when the pressure is on and that’s the difference between winning a World Cup and getting knocked out.”

Ao todo, o time sub-20 soma 31 títulos cariocas.
