Nathan Coulter-Nile bowled Western Australia to an innings win over Victoria at the WACA, their first outright victory of the Sheffield Shield summer, as the Bushrangers fell 38 runs short of making the Warriors bat a second time.Although former Victoria captain Cameron White scored his first hundred of the Shield summer, his 131 was not enough after the twin tons from Marcus North and Shaun Marsh in Western Australia’s hefty first innings. Victoria started the final day on 5 for 272 and their already slim prospects of salvaging a draw slipped further when White was bowled trying to lap sweep North, having added 21 to his overnight score.It was Coulter-Nile who then caused problems when he had Daniel Christian (40) and Clint McKay (0) caught behind with the space of three deliveries, and in his next over he added the wicket of Jake Haberfield. Coulter-Nile picked up 4 for 53 for the innings and finished the match with eight victims, but it was first-innings centurion North who completed the victory when he had John Hastings lbw for 19.After the match, Cricket Australia announced that Western Australia’s Ashton Agar was fined 25% of his match fee for breaching the CA Code of Behaviour. Agar was reported by the umpires for showing dissent at an umpire’s decision while he was bowling in Victoria’s second innings. Agar accepted the fine, meaning a hearing was not required.

The Karnataka pacers rattled the Mumbai batting order to register their first-ever outright win against the Ranji heavyweights in 22 attempts, and their fourth consecutive this season. Set a target of 282 in 83 overs, Mumbai were skittled for 122 as Vinay Kumar, Abhimanyu Mithun and HS Sharath ran through the visitors’ line-up sharing eight wickets among them.No Mumbai batsman could cross 30, falling for either incoming deliveries or handing easy catches. This was Mumbai’s first Ranji loss in six years, since the setback against Hyderabad in December 2006.Karnataka, meanwhile, stretched their lead at the top of Group A after bagging six points while Mumbai slipped to the third place behind Gujarat and level with Punjab, after leading the table earlier in the season.Despite hurting their ankles in the last two days, Vinay and Mithun exploited the new ball and rocked Mumbai’s top order. Whatever happens over the next five days, they will leave these shores without the urn and without any real idea of how to fix their problems.Graeme Swann has retired mid-tour, the vice-captain Matt Prior has been dropped, Jonathan Trott has spent most of the series at home, their only centurion has been the new boy Ben Stokes, they don’t have a batsman in the top five series run scorers, they have only one bowler averaging under 30. They’re a rabble, and even if they avoid a 5-0 defeat this result should hurt more than the 2006-07 clean sweep, for that was against champions like Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath and Adam Gilchrist.This Australian outfit has been cobbled together after a period of retirements, experiments and abandonments. Clarrie Grimmett’s all-time Australian record of 44 wickets in a series is probably safe, but the way Johnson is going, nothing is certain.Last week, Scott Borthwick was getting ready to head off to Sri Lanka with England Lions after his stint with the Sydney grade side Northern District. Sri Lanka will anticipate stiffer resistance from Bangladesh in Chittagong, despite the feebleness of their Mirpur loss, batsman Kumar Sangakkara said. The hosts had failed to exert pressure on Sri Lanka for significant periods in the first Test, and were bowled out cheaply in both innings as they continued to offer rash strokes. The Bangladesh bowlers had only dismissed six Sri Lanka batsmen – one of them a nightwatchman who was slated to come in at No. 11 – as the visitors amassed 730.Bangladesh had been more spirited in the two-match Test series the teams had played in Sri Lanka last year, drawing one match and stringing together impressive periods in the second, which they eventually lost.”We are pretty much used to Bangladesh putting up a pretty good fight usually,” Sangakkara said. “They pushed us in the Test series over there, and we walked away 1-1 in the one-day series. More often than not, they are more competitive in the one-day version of the game, so in the shorter formats of the game, we know we’re in for the fight. We won’t expect anything less than that from them here. The earlier game was easier than we thought it would be, but we expect it to be different here.”Whether we are complacent or not can only be seen when we start playing.
