CRB vence o Sampaio Corrêa no Rei Pelé

Jadeja routs Deccan Chargers

Ravindra Jadeja grabbed a five-wicket haul after an innings of 48 off 29 deliveries as Super Kings recovered in style from a patchy display in their opening game against Mumbai Indians

He was persisted with for all of India’s eight games in the CB series in Australia, for an average of 16.83 with the bat and 109.00 with the ball. He had an indifferent Asia Cup. Back in the IPL, this time with Chennai Super Kings, this year’s most expensive signing, Ravindra Jadeja, excelled right away in the tournament that had catapulted him into the limelight in 2008. A five-wicket haul followed an innings of 48 off 29 deliveries as Super Kings recovered in style from a patchy display in their opening game against Mumbai Indians. While Jadeja’s name was all over the scorecard, it was Dwayne Bravo’s late blast with the bat that took the game away from Chargers. Bravo blasted five sixes in the last two overs to propel Super Kings to a tall score, which was aided by loose bowling from the Indian component of the Chargers attack. Faf du Plessis provided the boost at the start, Jadeja built on it in the middle and Bravo took Chargers apart at the death.Forty runs came in overs 19 and 20 bowled by TP Sudhindra and Manpreet Gony. A leading edge off Sudhindra carried all the way over the straight boundary for the first six. Bravo wound up and deposited the next delivery, a length ball, over long-on. Gony was wayward in the final over, and Bravo clattered three sixes off an assortment of full tosses and short deliveries.Bravo ended on 43 off 18, with Super Kings taking 72 in the last five overs. Du Plessis had set the tone earlier, hitting Gony for three consecutive boundaries in the fifth over. Gony became too predictable with his shortish length, and du Plessis stayed back to steer for four to third man and pull for six over deep midwicket. Gony became predictable again when he went full with the last ball of the over, and du Plessis lofted him over long-off.Sudhindra had du Plessis holing out to long-on with his first ball, but was to go for 46 in four overs. Suresh Raina and S Badrinath looked in fine touch till Daniel Christian got them. Christian and Dale Steyn were difficult to get away, but Chargers had plenty of weak links in the attack.Jadeja went after fellow left-arm spinner Ankit Sharma, slog-sweeping and lofting him for three boundaries. Christian was taken for consecutive fours. Jadeja even tried to distract Steyn by moving around in his crease but was dismissed hit-wicket when he trod onto his stumps as he tried to nudge a short of a length Steyn delivery. Things weren’t looking as bad for Chargers at that point with the score on 147 in the 18th over, but Bravo’s innings turned a stiff chase into an improbable one.It did not help Chargers that the longest any of their batsmen managed to last was 18 deliveries and the most any of them made was 23. Super Kings’ spin battery smothered Chargers completely. R Ashwin gave 12 runs in his three overs at the start, Shadab Jakati got the important wickets of Cameron White and Christian, and Jadeja did the rest. He is an unspectacular bowler, but is generally accurate.By the time he was brought on in the 11th over, the asking-rate had already crossed 12. Chargers had no option but to go after the bowling. But this was Jadeja’s night, and there was to be no hitting him.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is all set to appoint Richard Pybus as the national head coach after a day of meetings and “fact-finding”. None of the other candidates who were shortlisted – Mick Newell and Mark Greatbatch – are due to be interviewed, and Pybus’ appointment is likely to be confirmed within a week.”There won’t be any more interviews, nobody else is coming. We want one person and I’m sure we will succeed,” BCB president AHM Mustafa Kamal said. “We have spoken to him [Pybus] and we are quite interested to get him. We can get a concrete decision from him in six to seven days.”After arriving late on Thursday night, Pybus spent time with Kamal at his residence. On Friday, he visited the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur to check out the facilities and meet some of the directors. In the evening, he met with some of the senior Bangladesh players in Dhaka. He is due to head back to Cape Town on Saturday afternoon.”This is nothing official nor is it an interview,” Pybus told reporters. “This is a fact-finding mission on my behalf and I am here to meet the president and the support staff. I want to make an informed decision and find out whether I can make a valid contribution.”It is about meeting people and finding a common ground. I have a family back in South Africa and I will go back and tell them whether it is feasible.”The living situation is the only hitch in an otherwise done deal as the BCB chief confirmed that there won’t be any more interviews or meetings with the other candidates.Pybus has seen Bangladesh up close a few times as Pakistan’s coach, most famously when Bangladesh upset Pakistan in the 1999 World Cup in a group game in Northampton. Before heading to Bangladesh, he spoke the wife of the late South Africa allrounder Eddie Barlow, who was Bangladesh’s coach after that World Cup.”Eddie Barlow was a friend of mine in South Africa and before he passed away, he spoke very highly about Bangladesh cricket,” Pybus said. “I spoke to his wife Cally last week and she only had good things to say about the people in Bangladesh.”Pybus will be coaching an international side for the first time since 2003. He was impressed with Bangladesh’s performance of late and said that he has a passion for the top job.”There is a lot of raw talent, and they have started to play some good cricket, build on the work done by Stuart [Law] and the support staff on the progress of the boys. It (Shere Bangla Stadium) is a wonderful, world-class stadium. It is nice to be here and nice to be in a country where the passion is incredible.”There’s never a shortage of hunger there. There’s always a challenge but it is about making a valid contribution. Those are the important things,” he said.Edited by Kanishkaa Balachandran

Réver reprova violência e espera prorrogar momento ruim do Vasco

Vamos buscar a vitória’, disse Réver.

'Mahela may have to lead till 2015' – Dilshan

Tillakaratne Dilshan: “I think Mahela will have to shoulder the burden till the next World Cup”•AFP

Tillakaratne Dilshan, the Sri Lanka batsman, has said the current captain Mahela Jayawardene may have to lead till the 2015 World Cup in order to provide sufficient time for a successor to be groomed.Angelo Mathews, the 25-year-old allrounder, is widely seen as a leading candidate to take over when Jayawardene steps down. Mathews has established himself in all three formats, but has struggled with injuries during his three-year career. Dilshan cautioned against thrusting the leadership on Mathews too soon.”You can’t give someone the captaincy all of a sudden. He (Mathews) has to be groomed under a good captain for two to three years,” Dilshan said after a training session at the R Premadasa Stadium. “Not just on how to handle things on the field, but also off the field. Those are some of the things I learned. It’s not easy, mind you. I hope Angelo will be a good captain, but he has time. He has to work under Mahela.”Kumar [Sangakkara], Mahela and I are nearing our retirement age. After the next World Cup we would be gone. I think Mahela will have to shoulder the burden till the next World Cup.”Dilshan also defended his decision to step down as captain five months ago, following the tour of South Africa. He had never spoken publicly about the main reasons for quitting and said he wanted to remain tight-lipped about it till he gives up the game.”There were many reasons for me to step down. I don’t like to discuss them at this point as I am still involved in the game,” Dilshan said. “But when I retire I will reveal why I quit.”Dilshan took over as captain from Kumar Sangakkara after the 2011 World Cup, led his team on tours to England, the UAE [against Pakistan] and South Africa and at home against Australia. His captaincy came under severe criticism as Sri Lanka lost both the Test and ODI series against all the four countries. His form with the bat also dipped during his captaincy. Dilshan led Sri Lanka in 11 Tests since May 2011, of which his team won one Test and lost five. His own average during his tenure was 33.60, well below his overall average of 40.89. In the same period, he led in 21 ODIs, winning eight and losing 13. His batting suffered even more on the ODI front, as he averaged 20.95 against his overall figure of 34.68.”At that point, with the way things were going, I felt that it’s good to give up the captaincy and concentrate on my game,” Dilshan said. “During that eight-month period I learned a lot of things. That experience taught me who people were. I think it was the right decision to step down.”Dilshan said he was the only realistic choice to captain Sri Lanka after Jayawardene and Sangakkara both had leadership stints. Mathews, who was named vice-captain before the home series against Australia last year, wasn’t seen to be experienced enough to take over the leadership. Dilshan said he accepted the role because of the lack of options. Jayawardene took over for his second stint at the helm early this year before the one-day tour of Australia.”I didn’t want the captaincy and back then no one wanted to take over the captaincy,” Dilshan said. “There was no leader and that prompted me to take over the leadership.”Reflecting on the positives of his captaincy, Dilshan said winning the Durban Test, Sri Lanka’s first Test win in South Africa, gave him tremendous satisfaction.”When I took over as captain, I wanted to give younger players opportunities. Most players made most of those opportunities and I am glad that those players are taking the initiative these days to win us games. That’s my biggest achievement as Sri Lanka captain. The other thing that I look back with fondness is being able to win a Test match in South Africa which no captain has been able to do. Even that ODI series in South Africa we could have won, but we lost unfortunately due to rain.”

Sem Bruno Peres e Everton, Aguirre faz testes no time titular do São Paulo

Rare full-strength squad likely for India

For the first time India have had a significant break between the IPL and their subsequent international series, and all their first-choice players are expected to be available for the Sri Lanka trip when the selectors meets in Mumbai

Abhishek Purohit03-Jul-2012

Both Virender Sehwag and Zaheer Khan are likely to play in Sri Lanka•AFP

For the first time since the IPL was inaugurated, India have had a significant break between the tournament and their subsequent international series. They will have had a break exactly as long as IPL 2012 before they play the first of five ODIs against Sri Lanka on July 21, and this has ensured players like Zaheer Khan and Virender Sehwag, who are prone to injury, have had sufficient time to rest and recover. All India’s first-choice players are expected to be available for the Sri Lanka trip when the selection committee meets in Mumbai on Wednesday.Member of Parliament Sachin Tendulkar’s case has become different from those of the rest in recent years, and having played only two ODI series since 2011 World Cup, he could decide to skip this one as well. Till Tuesday evening though, reports said he hadn’t ruled himself out.If Tendulkar does opt out, it would do away with the controversial rotation policy followed in the CB Series in Australia, when only two of Tendulkar, Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir were chosen in the XI. Sehwag’s absence had taken care of the same during the Asia Cup. If Tendulkar makes the trip, Manoj Tiwary, who has travelled half the world with the side without getting a game, could miss out after a lukewarm A team tour of the West Indies. The India quicks had a disappointing Asia Cup, but the availability of Zaheer and Umesh Yadav makes the weakest link appear far less so. Ashok Dinda could keep his place after a decent show in the West Indies with the A team and in the IPL.Whether the selectors persist with Rahul Sharma as the second specialist spinner, alongside R Ashwin, remains to be seen, given his unspectacular returns in the West Indies and the presence of an army of part-timers. Whether the selectors bring back Harbhajan Singh, who has been sidelined for almost a year and has just signed with England county Essex, also remains to be seen. The county contract, though, sends out a signal that they might have already made up their mind. The contest for the No. 7 spot began afresh in the Asia Cup, with Yusuf Pathan returning even as Ravindra Jadeja continued to retain his place in the squad after a poor CB Series. Yusuf featured in only one game in the series and didn’t get a chance to bat, so it is fair to assume that this round of the battle has only started. Yusuf, though, did have a woeful IPL, even more so than Jadeja. There is also the case for Irfan Pathan, who is nowhere near the bowler he once was, but did better than Jadeja both in the CB Series and in the Asia Cup.Team combinations apart, another thing to watch out for is the choice of vice-captain for this series, after the position was taken from Gambhir and given to Virat Kohli for the Asia Cup.A little over a month separates the Sri Lanka tour and the World Twenty20, which will be played in the same country. Given the disasters the last two editions of that tournament held for India, this series and the experience the combination that is picked gets could prove useful come September.
