John Inverarity is confident he has kept close enough ties with the game to make a success of his new role as Australia’s national selector. Inverarity, 67, was a surprise appointment to the newly-created full-time job, with Rod Marsh and Trevor Hohns previously considered front-runners for what will be one of the most important positions in Cricket Australia’s new structure.A former allrounder who played six Tests for Australia, Inverarity was more prominent in Sheffield Shield cricket and was considered a great thinker and captain during his 23-year first-class career for South Australia and Western Australia. Since his retirement from cricket, he was headmaster of a prestigious boys’ high school in Perth, and more recently served as head of St George’s College at the University of Western Australia. However, Inverarity has also kept his hand in cricket coaching, first at Kent in 2001 and then during a three-year stint as head coach of Warwickshire, which ended in 2005. Cricket Australia’s chief executive, James Sutherland, said Inverarity’s varied experience made him the outstanding candidate to succeed Andrew Hilditch, the current part-time chairman, as the head of the revamped selection panel.”There’s no concern at our end,” Sutherland said of Inverarity’s age. “One of the things that we’ve worked through in the interview process and got absolute satisfaction on is the fact that John Inverarity is ready to do this job. In many ways, this is his time to be involved in cricket.”He’s pursued another career, he has continued to have an involvement and an interest in cricket through that time, but he’s pursued another career. As I see it, it’s a career that is very much complementary to what this role as national selector is. In terms of any questions about his age, I just don’t think that’s an issue.”Inverarity will begin his new role after the tour of South Africa, with Hilditch and the interim panel set to continue choosing the teams during that trip. Cricket Australia’s attention will now turn to finding two independent part-time selectors to join Inverarity and the captain Michael Clarke on the panel, which will also include the yet-to-be-chosen head coach.Their challenge over the next few seasons – Inverarity has been signed to a three-year contract – is to manage the development of a host of young players, while also steering the side through a transition phase with older men such as Ricky Ponting and Michael Hussey nearing the end of their careers. Inverarity said he was confident he had not been out of the game too long to handle the responsibilities.”I’m 67 but I feel very young at heart,” Inverarity said. “I’d like to think that over those 67 years I’ve had a lot of experiences from which I have benefited. The key thing in this is exercising judgment. I have followed the game very closely. I think in my life outside of cricket, particularly in education and being the headmaster of a school and warden of a university college, your experiences and exercising judgments and dealing with young people [will help].”All my life I have sought challenges. I have sought challenges of trying to be in the area where I can influence a leadership or management role and trying to get a group performing at its best. Whether that’s been in a cricket team or club, or in a school or in a university college, that’s what motivates me. That’s what I really enjoy doing. I feel that over the years I’ve had some success in doing so.”Inverarity is the second key appointment to stem from the Argus review, after the former rugby international Pat Howard was named Cricket Australia’s general manager of team performance earlier this month. His appointment also came on the same day that his former Western Australia team-mate, Wally Edwards, was elected chairman of Cricket Australia. However, while Inverarity has a firm three-year deal to shape the future of Australian cricket, Edwards is less certain about the length of his tenure. The review into Cricket Australia’s governance is expected to be tabled later this year and could recommended the existing board being replaced by an independent commission.

'No fear of Australia at all' – Bracewell

New Zealand seamer Doug Bracewell has said his team has the “mongrel” to topple Australia on their own turf, ahead of the two-Test series that gets underway at the Gabba from December 1

New Zealand seamer Doug Bracewell has said his team has the “mongrel” to topple Australia on their own turf, ahead of the two-Test series that gets underway at the Gabba from December 1. Bracewell, now in his second tour with the national team, said New Zealand are capable of playing a tougher brand of cricket.”There’s definitely no fear of Australia at all,” Bracewell told the . “We’ve spoken about being more ruthless and having more mongrel as a team. Whether that’s guys sledging or however they go about their business, we just want to be a tougher, more consistent team.”New Zealand haven’t beaten their trans-Tasman rivals in a Test since 1993, and have not won in Australia for 26 years. However, the current Australian line-up they’re up against at the Gabba is already depleted with the loss of Mitchell Johnson, Shane Watson, Patrick Cummins, Ryan Harris and Shaun Marsh. The bowling attack features three rookie fast bowlers, with Peter Siddle leading the attack.Despite Australia’s early setback with injuries to key players, Bracewell called his side the “underdogs” who have nothing to fear.”Before we came over we said we want to be more aggressive and ruthless, especially playing the Aussies,” Bracewell said. “They like to think they’re the best team in the world and what not. We are the underdogs so it gives us that mongrel to go out and show that we’re better than them – that we can beat them. We’ll be looking to take it to them and show no fear.”New Zealand are coming off a short series in Zimbabwe, where they sneaked a Test win despite a spirited fightback by the home side. Bracewell said certain senior players and the coach John Wright are responsible for shaping the team’s self-belief.”It’s mainly come from the coach and the likes of Rossco [captain Ross Taylor], [Daniel] Vettori and [Brendon] McCullum,” Bracewell said.He said a win in Australia is long overdue. “We owe it to the New Zealand public to try to get a win over here,” Bracewell said. “I know our followers will respect us a lot more if we beat Australia over here. We’re thinking about that. It’s something to get inspired about.”Bracewell, who took a five-wicket haul in his debut Test in Zimbabwe, was in good form in the drawn tour match against Australia A, scoring an unbeaten 73 and taking four wickets.

Não se esqueça de mim! Lei do ex funciona e São Paulo vence Cruzeiro

Pollard, spinners star in massive T&T win

A round-up of matches from the Caribbean T20 on January 11

ESPNcricinfo staff12-Jan-2012Trinidad & Tobago put in an impressive all-round performance in North Sound, Antigua, to dole out a 167-run defeat – the second-largest ever in Twenty20 cricket – to Leeward Islands. Kieron Pollard, who blitzed an unbeaten 56 off 15 balls that included five sixes in an over, was named Player of the Match. His knock helped lift T&T’s total to an imposing 211 for 3, following which the spinners, Samuel Badree and Sunil Narine, polished off Leeward for 44 – the second-lowest team total in Twenty20s.T&T’s new captain, Denesh Ramdin, chose to bat and the decision paid off as the top order clicked. Lendl Simmons and Adrian Barath, the openers, laid the platform with a solid century stand, before Darren Bravo and Pollard exploded. Leeward were behind from the outset of the chase, when Badree had Austin Richards caught behind first ball. He also got the other opener, Kieran Powell, for a duck and that set the tone for the innings. Badree finished with three wickets, while Narine ran through lower order with four scalps in one over. Ravi Rampaul and Bravo provided adequate support, claiming the remaining three wickets between them in very tight spells.”There is more to come. 56 off 15 balls, not bad! The best is yet to come,” Pollard said about his knock. “Everyone is fully aware that I’m not at full fitness but I had a job to do for Trinidad and Tobago. I’m able to bat but I can’t run around in the field and dive around and obviously I can’t bowl as yet either. I’m still working to try to get up to 75 percent (fitness level). When I do there will be more to come. The best is yet to come.”We got such a great start from Adrian and Lendl and it was a simple matter of me coming down in the middle and finishing off the job for the team at that point in time. After hitting the first four balls for six the thought went through my mind about hitting all six for sixes.”It didn’t happen but I hit the last one for another six and more important we got 30 in the over and that pushed us to 200. It was good that we were able to get a huge score and then bowl and field so well to bowl them out. We are a happy team.”In the second match of the day, Windward Islands eased to a nine-wicket win against Canada, with 21 balls to spare. Canada chose to bat, but could not get any momentum going in their innings. No one could make more than Ruvindu Gunasekera’s 38, and only Gunasekera and Zubin Surkari, who was out for 5, scored at quicker than a run a ball. As a result, Canada finished with a rather meagre 111 for 7 in their 20.Canada had a glimmer of a chance early in the chase, when Henry Osinde had Miles Bascombe cheaply, but thereafter Windward cruised. Opener Johnson hit an unbeaten 61, while Andre Fletcher made 38 not out to carry Windward home in the 17th over.

Chulapa esboça time do Santos e será o técnico da equipe neste domingo

Warne back in business as Stars win

A record crowd at the Gabba for a domestic Twenty20 undoubtedly came to see Shane Warne.

A record crowd at the Gabba for a domestic T20 undoubtedly came to see Shane Warne. They got their monies-worth as Warne and his team delivered in the most entertaining match of the BBL so far.Melbourne Stars, the side with as much star-power as any in this competition, beat Brisbane Heat by eight runs in a match that featured highlights with bat and ball and a virtuoso performance from Warne in front of 29,241 people.Rob Quiney’s match winning 97 from 60 balls set up an imposing total of 7 for 177 on a pristine Gabba surface, before Clint McKay’s 3 for 22 was statistically the pick of the bowlers in the Stars defensive effort. But in reality, both men were overshadowed by night’s star attraction: Shane Warne.Brisbane were on track at 2 for 70 after seven overs of their run chase. Matthew Hayden clubbed four fours in the second over of the innings from England international Jade Dernbach. Hayden smashed his tenth ball straight to mid off to fall for an entertaining 22 but Brendan McCullum picked up the slack cruising to 26 from 16 balls before Warne entered. McCullum had got off the mark with a six over long on in the first over but he was far more respectful of Warne first up.Two balls at McCullum and four at Peter Forrest in Warne’s first over were all delivered with artistry and precision. He conceded four runs, as well extracting some turn and bounce from a wicket he adores.McCullum attacked Warne in his second over. The New Zealander charged, Warne tossed high and wide, McCullum miscued a spooned drive, high, but safely beyond cover-point. Warne picked him up two balls later, bowling him around his legs as he attempted to sweep.Dan Christian was the only player to get a piece of Warne, clubbing him for six over long on. But Warne’s other 23 balls cost just 16.Outside of Warne and McKay the Stars other three bowlers conceded more than nine-an-over. But they did enough to curtail Brisbane, who simply could not construct a partnership. Their largest was 55 unbroken stand between Michael Neser and Ryan Harris but it came too late as it began in the 15th over with the score at 7 for 114.Earlier the Stars had set-up their total on the back of a 105-run stand between Quiney and David Hussey. Melbourne were 2 for 31 when the pair came together after Nathan Hauritz opened the bowling with great success snaring Matthew Wade and George Bailey early. But Quiney found the pace of the Gabba wicket to his liking as he smashed six sixes and five fours in a 60-ball knock that ended three short of a well-deserved century. Outside of Hauritz, who showed the value of a slow bowler at the Gabba by taking 3 for 18 from four quality overs, Brisbane were exposed for a lack of variety.Quiney’s high grip and Gilchrist-like swinging arc took full toll of all the medium pacers’ length offerings. Hussey was a valuable contributor as well. His 45 from 32 showcased his wonderful skill as a T20 cricketer.Brisbane slumped to their second loss of the tournament, whilst the Stars squared the ledger with a win and a loss.
