All-round McDonald keeps Leicestershire on track

Andrew McDonald produced a Man-of-the-Match display to steer Leicestershire to an eight-wicket win over Yorkshire

29-Jun-2011
Scorecard
Andrew McDonald produced a Man-of-the-Match display to steer Leicestershire to an eight-wicket win over Yorkshire and keep them on course for a place in the Friends Life t20 quarter-finals for the first time in five years. The allrounder took 3 for 18 as the visitors were bowled out for 144 at Grace Road and then hit a superb unbeaten 59 to guide the hosts to a crushing win with 22 balls to spare. McDonald and Josh Cobb shared an opening stand of 74 in eight overs and then, following the dismissal of Will Jefferson, James Taylor joined the Australian in an unbroken match-winning third-wicket partnership of 63 off 41 balls.Yorkshire, having been put into bat, made a good start and were 73 for 1 by the ninth over. Captain Andrew Gale led by example with an excellent half-century. But he had little support and his side were unable to maintain the early momentum, losing the last nine wickets for 71 runs in the final 12 overs.Gale was the only batsman to offer any real resistance to the home attack, making 67 off 56 balls with six boundaries before being eighth out when he was caught at deep midwicket off Harry Gurney. The left-arm seamer finished with 3 for 26, claiming all his three wickets in his final over. But it was McDonald who created the biggest problems for Yorkshire, picking up the vital wickets of Adam Lyth, Jonny Bairstow and Gary Ballance. After Gale the next highest scorer for Carnegie was Ajmal Shahzad, who slammed 20 off 11 balls including a massive six off Cobb.On a good pitch Yorkshire’s total never looked enough and Cobb and McDonald gave the Foxes just the start they needed to set up victory. Cobb continued his splendid form at the top of the order, making 46 off 25 balls with six boundaries and two sixes off Shahzad. The Yorkshire paceman went for 43 runs off his three overs and the only successes for the visitors were the two wickets of Cobb and Jefferson – both snared by Richard Pyrah. But McDonald and Taylor ensured victory for the Foxes with a splendid partnership, McDonald finishing unbeaten on 59 off 47 balls while Taylor showed his class with a bright and breezy 33 off 22 balls. It was Leicestershire’s fifth win of the season and they remained second in the north group table.

Uganda, Nigeria end group stage with wins

A round-up of the sixth day of matches in the ICC Africa Region Division One Twenty20 2011

ESPNcricinfo staff14-Jul-2011Uganda crushed Kenya by eight wickets at the Kyambogo Cricket Ground, registering their sixth win of the ICC Africa Division One Twenty20 2011, to set up a final with table-toppers Namibia. Choosing to bat, Kenya limped to 74 for 9 in their 20 overs – just three of their batsmen managed to get into double figures with Kennedy Ochieng top scoring with 26. Deusdedit Muhumuza and Davis Arinaitwe picked up two wickets each, and three run-outs were effected in the innings.Despite losing opener Arthur Kyobe off the second ball of the chase, Uganda faced no real threat, with Abdulah Lubega and Arthur Ziraba putting on 69 for the second wicket and effectively sealing the match. The winning runs came in the 15th over with Lubega unbeaten on 36.Nigeria beat Ghana by a convincing six-wicket margin at the Lugogo Cricket Oval, to finish third in the points table. Choosing to bat, Ghana were off to an impressive start with a 44-run opening partnership, but the rest of the line-up failed to capitalise. Francis Bakiweyem fell soon after reaching his half-century, edging Kunle Adegbola to the keeper, but his knock was key to Ghana reaching 127 for 9 in their 20.Nigeria were solid in their reply. There were handy contributions from four of their top five batsmen with No. 4 Ramit Gill top-scoring with a run-a-ball 35. Adegbola, who had picked up three wickets, was unbeaten on 28 off 25 balls, as Nigeria finished the game with 15 balls to spare. While Ghana’s one win from eight games puts them at the bottom of the table, Nigeria have qualified for Friday’s third-place playoff in which they will play Kenya.

30-Jul-2011ScorecardDawid Malan scored a career-best 143 and his first Championship hundred ofthe summer to move Middlesex into the driving seat at Lord’s against DivisionTwo rivals Derbyshire. The left-hander batted just over five hours in helping thehost side reach 397 for 9 at the mid-point of the game for an overall lead of145, with one first-innings wicket remaining.Poor form and a niggling hamstring injury caused Malan to suffer an horrendousfirst half to the campaign in which he mustered only 234 runs in nine startswith a dismal season’s best of 45. But, in sultry conditions, Malan showed improved levels of patience and composure to crack 18 boundaries in a 262-ball stay which also helped his sidegarner four batting bonus points.Derbyshire used eight bowlers – with Greg Smith and Jonathan Clare the pickwith three wickets apiece – and toiled hard throughout to pick up nine wicketson the day, including that of Malan four overs from the close.Malan featured in a useful stands with Sam Robson, who contributed his thirdscore of 94 of the summer, and Tim Murtagh as the hosts successfully chased downa fourth batting bonus point with six balls to spare. All this came after a disappointing start for the home side who, having posted 119 for the first wicket, began to lose wickets at steady intervals.Opening batsman Scott Newman perished for 59 when his late decision to pad upto a Clare off-cutter saw him go lbw and, eight overs later, Chris Rogers wentfor 11 against his former side when chasing a wide drive – only to edge towicketkeeper Luke Sutton.Soon after lunch Robson, having looked in little or no trouble for 184 balls, went after another wide delivery from Ross Whiteley to slice a drive into thehands of gully. Home skipper Neil Dexter found a leading edge to give Smith a comfortablereturn catch and Jamie Dalrymple clipped a leg-stump half-volley straight tomidwicket to make it 262 for 5.Malan teamed up with John Simpson to post the Middlesex 300 before Simpsonfeathered a good ball from Mark Turner to Sutton, then Tom Smith was cleanbowled after pushing outside the line of namesake Greg’s arm-ball.Malan and Murtagh (19) regrouped but, late in the day, Murtagh chipped backanother return catch to Greg Smith and Malan, having beaten his career-best byone, flat-batted a Clare Long hop straight to Wayne Madsen at backward point anddeparted to a rousing reception.

Butcher laments dropped catches

Alan Butcher, Zimbabwe’s coach, singled out dropped catches as the reason for his team squandering their chance of being competitive in the latter stages of the Test

Zimbabwe’s slender chances disappeared as Tatenda Taibu fell in the first over of the final day•Associated Press

Alan Butcher, Zimbabwe’s coach, singled out dropped catches as the reason for his team squandering their chance of being competitive in the latter stages of the Test against Pakistan. Zimbabwe dropped six catches in Pakistan’s first innings and conceded a lead of 54 runs, after they had scored an impressive 412 themselves.”Catching probably cost us a chance of winning,” Butcher said. “We had every reason to believe that we would get a first-innings lead.” Mohammad Hafeez, who was Pakistan’s only centurion, was dropped twice, while Misbah-ul-Haq, Younis Khan and Umar Akmal were also put down. The bulk of the missed chances were relatively simple and Brendan Taylor said the team felt a general “frustration” at not taking their opportunities. They were less hard on themselves for the batting collapse in the second innings, which resulted in Pakistan being given a small target to chase. “On this wicket there was always potential for a collapse,” Butcher said. “[Saeed] Ajmal will cause better teams than ours some problems but we were disappointed to lose so many wickets to Hafeez in the second innings, because we thought he didn’t spin it that much.”Hafeez took four middle- and lower-order wickets after Ajmal had bagged three, with Aizaz Cheema chipping in with one. After slumping 69 for 8 on the fourth day, defeat appeared certain for Zimbabwe, but Tatenda Taibu’s stubborn half-century gave them slim hope of posting a defendable total. “We wanted to try and bat a session, bat some time out of the game and then chip away and build a lead,” Taylor said. “We knew anything could happen given their [Pakistan’s] history.”For a change, “anything” did not happen and Pakistan went on to record a routine victory. Zimbabwe lost by a smaller margin than the last time they played Pakistan – a 10-wicket defeat in Bulawayo in 2002 – and instead of dwell on the defeat they are opting to zone in on other aspects of their game as they look to rebuild a reputation in Test cricket.”There are a lot of positives to take out of this,” Taylor said “I wouldn’t say more than the Bangladesh game, but there are definitely positives. It was good to see us bat for 150 overs.” Butcher also lauded the first innings effort, in particular Tino Mawoyo’s maiden Test century. “Having an opening batsman bat through an innings was good.”Ajmal proved the major threat of the match, and tested Zimbabwe right through the first innings, even when the pitch had yet to show cracks. Butcher was pleased with the way Zimbabwe tried to withstand his assault. “We said if he is going to get a lot of wickets, then we will make him bowl a lot of overs for it and we made Ajmal bowl 50 overs to get his four wickets.”The Zimbabwe bowlers had a tough time on an unresponsive strip and Taylor thought, “The spinners worked hard together and showed good character,” while Butcher was impressed that, “having conceded so quickly at the start to have pulled it back was also good.”Zimbabwe’s inexperienced seam attack of Brian Vitori, Kyle Jarvis and Chris Mpofu took a pasting, managing only four wickets between them. Vitori, the nation’s wonderkid after his performances against Bangladesh, did not snag a single victim. “There were high hopes for him after Harare, he is hungry to learn,” Taylor said. “He has a great attitude and he will be back.”Butcher said the unhelpful surface will only aid Vitori’s development. “It took him a lot longer to find his length,” he said. “He has probably been brought back down to earth after his spectacular start but it was always going to happen.” While Vitori was expensive, Jarvis and Mpofu leaked a little less and Taylor said the pair could “hold their heads up high” for a brave showing.
