Milner was Liverpool’s hero v Newcastle

Liverpool returned to the Premier League summit for a few hours at least following a hard-fought 1-0 victory over a reinvigorated Newcastle this afternoon.

The Reds’ hopes for an unprecedented quadruple are still alive, and Klopp and his side will surely be dreaming of holding all four trophies come the season’s end.

The 54-year-old rested Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold following their European exploits in midweek as Newcastle started off at a hectic pace.

Naby Keita grabbed the only goal of the match in the 19th minute after some nice build-up play between him and Diogo Jota before rounding the Newcastle goalkeeper to finish.

The Portugal forward came close before half-time with a header, and he had further chances to extend Liverpool’s advantage in the second half. Nonetheless, a win will do, and one of Klopp’s selection gambles paid off.

Jota was bright throughout the game on Tyneside, but perhaps the real hero for the Reds was James Milner.

Milner was Liverpool’s hero

The veteran Englishman was excellent and received a rating of 8.4 on SofaScore, the highest of any Liverpool player, with Jota second on 7.6.

The 36-year-old won 70% of his duels during the contest to keep his team in with a chance of scraping the victory and played a joint-high four key passes, proving to be vital in both an attacking and defensive sense for the Reds.

The £150k-p/w hero also completed 86% of his passes, making one clearance and four tackles, and he was arguably Klopp’s key performer as they continue to go toe-to-toe with Manchester City in a fascinating title race.

It may well be Milner’s final season at Anfield, with his contract expiring at the end of the campaign, but whenever he is called upon, he does an excellent job, as he very much illustrated today.

His professionalism shines through and he has been an incredibly valuable servant for the club since joining from Manchester City in 2015. Performances like this will serve only to cement his hero status among Kopites everywhere.

Thompson named as new Surrey chairman

Richard Thompson was named on Tuesday as the new chairman of Surrey County Cricket Club.

ESPNcricinfo staff27-Oct-2010Richard Thompson was named on Tuesday as the new chairman of Surrey County Cricket Club. Thompson, 43, becomes the youngest chairman in the country and also the youngest in the club’s history. He replaces the outgoing chairman David Stewart, who led Surrey for seven years.Speaking after his confirmation, Mr. Thompson said: “I am honoured to become chairman of Surrey County Cricket Club. David Stewart will be a tough act to follow and Surrey owes him a great deal of thanks for the contribution he has made in the past seven years as Chairman and further seven as Honorary Treasurer before that.”Surrey is a unique and great club. Despite a period without trophies, I am confident that with the players coming through, the foundations are in place for a period of success in the future. Our members and supporters have been patient and supportive over the past few seasons. I hope with a policy of growing and developing our own talent wherever possible, that any success Surrey CCC may enjoy will be built on firm foundations with Surrey grown talent at the core.”Cricket is going through a period of great change. I will do all I can, to help steer Surrey through those challenges and be a stronger club as a result.”David Stewart added: “It has been most enjoyable and a real privilege to have steered the Club through such exciting and challenging times these last seven years. I am convinced that Richard is the right person to lead the club through the next chapter in its rich history.”

Man City can land next Gundogan with De Jong

Manchester City have seen numerous players join the club since Pep Guardiola was appointed as their manager back in 2016.

One of Guardiola’s earliest recruits for the Manchester club was midfielder Ilkay Gundogan, who joined the side from Borussia Dortmund for a fee of £20m in the summer of 2016.

Since then, the German has gone on to make 249 appearances in a City shirt across all competitions.

In those appearances, the midfielder has scored 47 goals and delivered 33 assists along the way.

To further highlight how prominent the World Cup winner has been for City over the past few years, only Raheem Sterling (288) and Kevin De Bruyne (260) have made more appearances for the club under Guardiola than Gundogan (248).

With the 31-year-old’s current contract at the Etihad Stadium set to expire in the summer of 2023, the midfielder has already spoken about his potential next career step, with a move to America or Turkey in mind.

Taking this into account, the upcoming summer transfer window could give the Citizens an ideal opportunity to bring in a potential long-term replacement for their German midfield star.

Having been recently linked with a move for Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong, he could well be the right figure to come in and fill Gundogan’s boots once he calls time on his spell with City.

Since joining the Spanish club back in 2019 from Ajax for a fee of £65m, the Dutchman has gone on to make 137 appearances, scoring 13 goals and delivering 17 assists in the process.

Labelled as a “dynamic” player in the past by his current manager Xavi, the La Liga giants have reportedly put a price tag of £58m on their midfield talent.

To compare him with Gundogan from their individual domestic seasons, while De Jong may not have as many attempts on goal as the City star, he has a higher percentage of shots on target (41.2%) than him (31.9%), meaning he is more clinical in front of goal.

In terms of his passing, the Dutchman also trumps Gundogan with a higher percentage of passes completed.

While De Jong has five more league games under his belt than the German, from a defensive point of view, he’s made more tackles, pressures, blocks, interceptions and clearances this term.

Taking all of this into account, not only could City and Guardiola find their ideal heir for Gundogan with the 24-year-old, but they may also blow the Etihad faithful away by securing the Barcelona star’s signature this summer.

Wellington overcome Aaron Redmond for winning start

Wellington overcame a sparkling effort from Aaron Redmond, and a late collapse while chasing, to outlast Otago at Basin Reserve and make a winning start to their HRV Cup campaign

ESPNcricinfo staff04-Dec-2010Wellington overcame a sparkling effort from Aaron Redmond, and a late collapse while chasing, to outlast Otago at Basin Reserve and make a winning start to their HRV Cup campaign. Jeetan Patel won the toss for the hosts and Damien Wright got them off to a strong start, removing Hamish Rutherford early. Redmond, however, was in a zone of his own and attacked from the outset. Neil Broom supported him with 23 in a partnership of 94 off 65 balls. Left-arm spinner Luke Woodcock’s double-strike pegged the innings back, before Redmond attacked again along with Darren Stevens, who made a quick 23. Redmond struck six fours and four sixes in his 82 that came off 54 balls, but Wellington removed both batsmen in the end overs to come back into the game. Wright finished with figures of 2 for 10 in his four overs as Otago reached 153 for 6 in their 20.Neal Parlane’s early exit without scoring set up Otago for a fight, but Michael Pollard took the game away with a fearsome attack. He smashed four sixes in 32 off 15 balls to give the chase early momentum before falling off the last ball of the Poweplay, with the score 52. Stewart Rhodes anchored the innings thereafter, calmly working his way to 49 off 54 balls, while Luke Wright and Chris Nevin accelerated at the other end. At 124 for 3 in the 15th over, Wellington were on course for an easy win, but Otago had some more tricks up their sleeve. Three wickets went down for the addition of no runs in the space of five balls, as Neil Wagner raised hopes of a back-door entry for his side. Rhodes, however, batted through the slump to take his side to safety before Wright and Dewayne Bowden finished things with two balls to spare.

-Grande jogador.

Clarke quits Twenty20, Cameron White new captain

Michael Clarke’s reign as Test captain might just be starting but his timeas Twenty20 leader has ended

Michael Clarke’s reign as Test captain might just be starting but his time as Twenty20 leader has ended. Clarke announced after the Ashes loss at the SCG that he would stand down from the role and will not play Twenty20, instead preferring to concentrate on regaining form in the five- and one-day arenas.Cameron White has been named as Australia’s captain for the two Twenty20 games against England next week, with Tim Paine confirmed as his deputy. The squad also includes Brett Lee, who will represent Australia for the first time since October 2009, as well as the uncapped Aaron Finch and James Pattinson.Clarke struggled to keep pace with the demands of the shortest gamebecause his technically correct batting was more suited to the longerformats. In 32 T20 internationals he had a strike-rate of 103, or slightlybetter than a run a ball, well below the output expected of a top-orderplayer.”I’m retiring from international Twenty20 cricket,” Clarke said. “I guess, looking back on this series, my Test cricket isn’t where I want it at the moment. This gives me the opportunity to focus wholly and solely on Test cricket and one-day and to use that time to play more domestic or first-class cricket for New South Wales and become a better Test player.”For me, I’ve always said Test cricket is the ultimate for me. This gives me that opportunity. In saying that, obviously my T20 performances haven’t been that great, which made the decision that much easier.”He captained the side in 18 matches and won 12 times, with the highlightbeing taking Australia to the final of the World Twenty20 in the WestIndies in May. England beat Australia on that occasion too.Clarke replaced Ponting asTest captain for the final game of this Ashes series, but will have towait until August to learn if he will be the full-time leader. However, he will captain Australia in the upcoming one-day series against England, as Ponting continues to recover from his finger injury. The two Twenty20s will be played next Wednesday and Friday, followed by seven ODIs beginning at the MCG on January 16. The chairman of selectors, Andrew Hilditch, said White was ready for the leadership of Australia’s Twenty20 side and the selectors were keen to play Paine more often to help him prepare for when he eventually takes over from Haddin permanently.”Cameron White has been named as captain of the Twenty20 team and Tim Paine vice-captain,” Hilditch said. “We are confident that they will provide outstanding leadership for what is a very exciting Twenty20 team.”Brad hasn’t been picked in the side, he’s obviously disappointed, but the reality is we need to take opportunites from time to time to look at other players. We think Tim has big future, we’re keen to give him leadshership experience as well, which we’re doing in the Prime Minister’s XI game and this Twenty20 squad. Brad is still our No. 1 keeper in all forms of the game, but at this particular moment the right thing is to look at Tim Paine.”The national selection panel is taking the opportunity to look at some of our exciting young talent in this form of the game. Aaron Finch has been in outstanding form for Victoria and the NSP looks forward to watching him play at the highest level in this form of the game.”James Pattinson is one of a crop of young fast bowlers with great potential and he impressed with his stint with the Australian side in India. We’re sure he’s ready for the challenge of international cricket. The squad also sees the return of Brett Lee and Shaun Tait. Both at their best are explosive bowlers and should add greatly to the team.”Australia squad David Warner, Shane Watson, Cameron White (capt), David Hussey, Aaron Finch, Steven Smith, Tim Paine (wk), Steve O’Keefe, Mitchell Johnson, Brett Lee, James Pattinson, Shaun Tait.

Wright calls for disciplined batting

John Wright, the New Zealand coach, has asked for more discipline from his misfiring batsmen ahead of the second and final Test against Pakistan

John Wright, the New Zealand coach, has asked for more discipline from his misfiring batsmen ahead of the second and final Test against Pakistan which starts on Saturday. New Zealand had folded for 110 in the second innings of the first Test in Hamilton and lost by ten wickets.”We’ve got to try and get that top order functioning better,” Wright said. “Whatever we plan, and they’re pretty simple plans, we’ve got to be disciplined enough to get the job done.”There’s no excuses. We don’t need any explanations, if you’re picked as a batter your job is to get runs. It’s about occupying the crease and not giving your wicket away, it’s not rocket science.”New Zealand’s batting flopped on an almost subcontinental track in the first Test at Seddon Park, which was slow with not much bounce on offer. They will now have to get their act together on a Basin Reserve pitch that is expected to assist the seamers. “It looks pretty grassy,” Wright said of the pitch for the second Test. “We wouldn’t mind more sideways and bounce, it’s good for us.”One change New Zealand are contemplating is bringing in allrounder James Franklin for opener Tim McIntosh, who has six single-digit scores in his previous eight Test innings. “I think whenever you get a player like James in terms of the all-round package it’s a real advantage so you always try to fit that type of player in the team,” the New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori said. “With the likes of Jesse Ryder not bowling and Kane (Williamson) not bowling as well as we would have liked in the last test, then the addition of an allrounder could be beneficial, but we will find out later on.”Franklin hasn’t played a Test in nearly two years but has turned in strong performances on the domestic circuit and in limited-overs for New Zealand.
