Dhoni's Chennai seek victory for one last time

The Warriors are hungry for success but standing between them and Champions League glory is a Chennai team that is determined to triumph for one last time

Big PictureIt’s tempting to bill the final as the clash of captains: Davy Jacobs v MS Dhoni. It makes sense too. Jacobs is an interesting character. He’s extremely driven and has always wanted captaincy. He thinks it’s his destiny to lead this Warriors side. They hadn’t won a thing for 18 years until he came along. It’s team. It’s his passion, his life. And he is a fiercely ambitious young man.Jacobs hasn’t played a game for South Africa yet but, when asked what his plans are, he said he would like to be the vice-captain to Johan Botha in the Twenty20 international team. And there was no trace of arrogance. He said it as though it was a given and, in his mind, it is. A couple of days ago South Africa’s Test, ODI and Twenty20 sides were selected for the home series against Zimbabwe and the tour of the UAE. Jacobs wasn’t in them. Rest assured, he won’t stop busting his gut till he gets in. He’s that kind of a man.Tonight, after the successful semi-final, he said: “The team that wants it more will win tomorrow.” This is where this gets complicated. If this was just another final, it would not be far-fetched to say that Jacobs desires victory more than Dhoni does. But it’s not just another final. It’s the last time that this group of players will play together for Chennai and Dhoni has said he wants a perfect farewell. “Emotionally we are quite attached but unfortunately we won’t be able to retain the same team. We want to do well as this is the last tournament. The way we have gelled in the last three years [is great].”Dhoni’s leadership has its share of admirers. He tries to ensure that he appears calm in the middle, he knows his teams’ weaknesses, he definitely knows its strengths and, like most successful captains, he gets his share of luck.It will perhaps come down to the pitch then. Jacobs said the Wanderers track will offer pace and bounce and he expects Makhaya Ntini to fire on the big day. But things even out. Dhoni has Doug Bollinger and Albie Morkel, who returned from injury and produced an excellent spell against Royal Challengers Bangalore. The edge in the seam attack will be with Chennai if Morkel can reprise that semi-final performance. He has often failed to be consistent in the Twenty20 format. Chennai’s spin attack comprises Muttiah Muralitharan and R Ashwin, Warriors have Nicky Boje and Johan Botha. Advantage Chennai? And so we come to the batting. Chennai didn’t have to face the pace of Dale Steyn in the last game and ended up with a massive total. Can Ntini and co strike fear in their camp? But Chennai do bat deep, at least deeper than Warriors. It’s difficult to pick a winner.
Team newsBoth teams don’t have any injury problems and are likely to go with unchanged sides.Chennai(probable): 1 M Vijay, 2 Michael Hussey, 3 Suresh Raina, 4 S Badrinath, 5 MS Dhoni (capt & wk), 6 S Anirudha, 7 Albie Morkel, 8 Doug Bollinger, 9 R Ashwin, 10 Muttiah Muralitharan, 11 L BalajiWarriors (probable): 1 Davy Jacobs (capt), 2 Ashwell Prince, 3 Colin Ingram, 4 Justin Kreusch, 5 Mark Boucher (wk), 6 Craig Thyssen, 7 Johan Botha, 8 Nicky Boje, 9 Rusty Theron, 10 Makhaya Ntini, 11 Lonwabo Tsotsobe.Watch out for …Ashwell Prince has been almost anonymous but he can be the guy who turns it on for Warriors in the final. He is the man who walked up his coach last year and said he wanted to open. He starred in the final of both the Pro20 and Pro-40 tournaments. While the attention will be on the explosive Jacobs, it might be Prince who performs the jailbreak against Chennai. His coach Russell Domingo says he has not seen a more determined cricketer than Prince. “He is calm and brings so much stability to this youthful team.”
Albie Morkel can make or break the game tomorrow. He bowled a fast spell in the last game during which he troubled Bangalore with seam movement and bounce. But Morkel’s game can also disintegrate quickly. He is far from consistent and his contest with the Warriors’ openers could decide the game.Quotes”Nicky Boje has a couple of ODI tons as an opener. And Botha can bat. So I am not worried that Botha is at No 6. It has worked for us so far.”

Liverpool suffer Roberto Firmino

Liverpool have been dealt a huge blow ahead of the Merseyside derby with Everton after Roberto Firmino missed training and is a huge doubt for the clash.

He was the only absentee at training yesterday according to This is Anfield, with the Reds fielding a strong squad at their Kirkby complex. The Brazilian also missed his side’s comfortable victory over rivals Manchester United in the week, following a foot injury he sustained in the FA Cup semi-final last weekend.

Manager Jurgen Klopp said the situation was still uncertain heading into the game and that “he’s getting better” but “it’s uncomfortable and painful” for him.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-liverpool-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-salah-gnabry-isak-romano” title= “Read the latest Liverpool news!”]

The 30-year old has had a smaller but still as crucial role in Liverpool’s success this campaign appearing 31 times and being directly involved in 15 goals. His availability against Everton would have provided Klopp with the perfect chance to rotate and rest players ahead of the important Champions League semi-final first leg on Wednesday.

Liverpool and Everton are further apart in terms of their form this season than they have been in a very long time. The Reds are battling for the Premier League title whilst their neighbours are fighting to avoid relegation.

Frank Lampard’s side desperately need the points so might prove tougher than what their league placing suggests, the local rivalry here is also huge so that surely adds extra motivation.

Firmino hasn’t scored in any of the 11 games he has played against the Toffees but does have two assists to his name. He was, however, involved in the league game last year where Everton defeated Liverpool for the first time in over a decade.

If he misses out today then we potentially could see him play in the game against Villarreal. If Liverpool are to be successful on all fronts this season then they’ll have to use the squad.

As for his future, it remains to be seen whether or not he is content with being more of a squad player. His contract expires next summer so Liverpool could cash in this year to avoid losing him on a free transfer.

Former England international Kevin Phillips said in an interview last month that he believes Firmino “is likely to move on” and that “he will want a new challenge”.

Even if that ends up happening, there’s no doubting his overall ability with him producing many great performances in a Liverpool shirt.

Iwobi let Everton down against Liverpool

Everton have conceded their 19th Premier League defeat of the season, and the third in their last five following a chaotic clash with their Merseyside rivals, Liverpool.

Despite managing to hold off the title challengers from scoring in the first half, Everton only managed a shocking 17% possession, one shot on target and made only 93 accurate passes compared to their opponent’s 699, which will surely be a huge disappointment for Frank Lampard.

The game was ultimately a tale of two halves, with Richarlison and Anthony Gordon running riot throughout the first 45 minutes of the game, causing all sorts of problems for Liverpool’s defence, but were unable to connect and complete anything worthwhile to really impose a critical threat.

In the second half, the Toffees managed to keep a stalemate until Jurgen Klopp decided to make two game-changing substitutions in the 60th minute when Divock Origi and Luis Diaz were introduced into the game, leading the pair to build play on the edges of the box for Mo Salah to set up Andy Robertson with the first goal of the game just two minutes later.

At this point, Everton struggled to get back into the game and were even further dejected when the second goal was netted by Origi in the 85th minute killing the game and sending the away team home with another away defeat.

One player who was a complete passenger throughout the game was Alex Iwobi, who failed to impose himself or take any of the chances to break down Liverpool’s defence this afternoon.

Iwobi who was once dubbed “stupid” by Alan Shearer made just ten accurate passes, lost 100% of his aerial duels, the majority of his ground duels (2/3) and was unsuccessful in the majority of his dribbles (2/3), as well as squandering the opportunity to score on more than one occasions.

The Nigerian winger cost Everton £40m and is one of the many products of Moshiri’s reckless spending over the last six years, scoring just seven goals in 91 appearances since joining the club in 2019, and if Lampard’s inclusion of the player in his team is to put him in the shop window ahead of the summer transfer window, the club should look for the opportunity to cash in.

Everton are now firmly inside the relegation zone alongside Watford and Norwich, following Burnley’s three-point win over Wolverhampton Wanderers earlier today and now Lampard must focus on capitalising on Chelsea’s inconsistent form as he will host his former club at Goodison Park this time next week.
