Australia were set to begin their only warm-up match ahead of the Tests against Pakistan when they took the field for a two-day game against Derbyshire on Thursday. While the length of the game is not ideal, Australia’s coach Tim Nielsen has said the players would have to do their best to adjust to the longer form after their recent ODI and Twenty20 series.”It is going to have to [do],” Nielsen said. “That is the modern world we live in and we have got what we have got. We just have to make sure that we change our mindsets and adapt our game styles as quickly as we can over these two days to get ready for five-day cricket.”Two days is barely long enough to get used to the red Duke ball but Pakistan are in the same situation, with only a two-day fixture against Leicestershire to prepare for the Lord’s Test. Simon Katich, Marcus North and Usman Khawaja have joined the squad ahead of the Tests, as has the swing bowler Ben Hilfenhaus, who is set to make his return to Test cricket.Hilfenhaus hasn’t played a Test since the three-day win over West Indies at the Gabba in November, after which he was struck down with knee tendonitis. Hilfenhaus made a promising return for Australia A in Queensland last month and collected a five-wicket haul against Sri Lanka A in the four-day encounter. The tour-ending knee injury to Ryan Harris has cleared Hilfenhaus’ path back into the Test line-up for Tuesday’s Lord’s Test. Nielsen said it would be good to reintroduce him in England, after he bowled well during the Ashes last year in the swinging conditions.”He proved he has the physical and mental strength to get through a lot of overs and cope with the pressure, that was one of the great things about the attack,” Nielsen said. “They had their ups and downs but they have all become better bowlers since then.”He has been increasing his program since February, so we feel as though this is the right time. We hope things go well and he gets a couple of Test matches under his belt before we go to India and get as much cricket out of his body as we can before the Ashes in Australia later this year.”

Aston Villa: Konsa eye by Arsenal

Aston Villa have seen many players come and go out of the club since their arrival back in the Premier League at the end of the 2018/19 season.

Some of those players have either joined from or moved to other English sides, such as Jack Grealish who joined Manchester City in the previous summer transfer window in a record-breaking deal.

Looking ahead to the upcoming summer window, it seems as though the Midlands club could be looking to move another one of their players out the door, with another English club reportedly waiting in the wings to pounce.

What’s the news?

According to a recent transfer report from Football Insider, fellow Premier League side Arsenal have set their sights on making a summer transfer move for Villa defender Ezri Konsa.

According to their sources, Villa boss Steven Gerrard has told Konsa’s agent that he is willing to listen to offers for the centre-back this summer.

Fans will be fuming

The Midlands signed the Englishman back in the 2019 summer transfer from Brentford in a deal worth £12m and it would not be a surprise if the Midlands outfit ended up making a profit on him.

Since then, he’s gone on to make 94 appearances for the Villans across all competitions, chipping in with six goals and two assists along the way.

However, that doesn’t necessarily make selling him a good idea. In fact, it would be a rather puzzling one from Gerrard considering comments just three days ago.

He said: “He’s been outstanding for me, obviously the red card [against Leeds] was frustrating for him and us because he is an important player.

“His level of consistency has been really high, whether that be on the training pitch or in a match situation.

“So I’m delighted to have him back and he was a big factor in the clean sheet last week.”

Therefore, the £22.5m-rated figure who has been dubbed “crazy” is clearly enormously important and the very fact he’s featured on 24 occasions and for over 2000 minutes this season says a lot.

Taking all of this into account, if the Villa hierarchy do indeed sell the defender in the summer, it would surely leave supporters rather angry.

Cueva volta e pede desculpas: 'Quem nunca errou, atire a primeira pedra'

O treinador e meus companheiros me deram confiança.

– Gareca sempre me falou o que pensa, sempre conversamos. Mas o São Paulo me deu tudo.

World Cup the focus in leisurely tri-series

Sri Lanka are the only team close to full strength for the tri-series, but New Zealand could benefit the most from the tournament

Siddarth Ravindran in Sri Lanka08-Aug-2010

Dambulla, whose floodlights were scrutinised during the Asia Cup, is set to host another one-day tournament•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

In its dual role as commercial hub of the North Central Province and site of the holy Golden Cave Temple, a UNESCO world heritage monument, Dambulla has long attracted a varied set of visitors. In 2010, the town seems out to add aficionados of the one-day game to that bunch, laying out 14 ODIs for them in fewer than three months, a feast even Sharjah didn’t offer during its salad days as a cricketing venue. The tickets are cheap, the weather is reasonable, and the pitch isn’t one of those featherbeds which make bowlers despair over their choice of career, but bussed-in school kids made up a chunk of the sparse crowd during the Asia Cup in June, and things aren’t likely to be too different for theupcoming tri-series.The players involved won’t be bothered by that, though. The teams will be using the tournament to figure out their combinations for next year’s World Cup in the subcontinent. India and Sri Lanka had talked of building up to cricket’s showpiece tournament during the Asia Cup but could not zero in on a settled batting order. The tri-series will be New Zealand’s first one-day tournament in five months, and gives several of their newcomers a chance to test themselves in conditions alien to those at home. For what it’s worth, the tri-series could also cause a major reshuffling in the one-day rankings. Australia are runaway leaders with a 14-point lead, but the next five teams are separated by only seven points. India are second, but that spot could be taken by either New Zealand (now fourth) or Sri Lanka (now sixth) by the end of the tournament.Teams will find it simpler to capture that second spot if their captains win the toss often. The floodlights at Dambulla are a bit dodgy and, more importantly, the pitch assists bowlers more under lights than in the afternoon, making the toss more vital than it should be. Sri Lanka had been the dominant team in the league phase of the Asia Cup, but they lost the toss and the final partly due to the lavish movement the Indian bowlers extracted from a previously benign track. In a time when three-day gaps between Tests are the norm, even if teams have to travel to a different venue, the tri-series follows a leisurely schedule despite being played entirely in Dambulla. There’s a two-day break between each match, giving teams ample time to visit the many archeologicalheritage sites in Sri Lanka’s famed Cultural Triangle.Sri LankaThe home side is the only one close to full strength and should start as favourites. After looking good for much of their previous two series, Kumar Sangakkara’s team finished poorly in both and were left with only the moderate reward of a shared Test series, something Sri Lanka will want to redress.Their batting order is settled till No. 5, but the Sri Lankan think-tank is still figuring out their best players for the remaining slots. With Thilina Kandamby having fallen out of favour, Thilan Samaraweera, Chamara Kapugedera and the recalled Chamara Silva are battling for two places. The absence of Muttiah Muralitharan means the tournament is a chance for the spinners Suraj Randiv, Ajantha Mendis and Rangana Herath to make cases for a permanent place.IndiaSri Lanka must be among MS Dhoni’s favourite destinations for one-day cricket: his captaincy record in the country is four titles in four tournaments. Adding a fifth could prove difficult, though, because India are without four first-choice players – Sachin Tendulkar, Gautam Gambhir, Harbhajan Singh and Zaheer Khan – which leaves Dhoni with a very young team: 11 members of the squad are 25 years or younger. The good news for him is that most of the youngsters have played plenty of cricket in Sri Lanka and are familiar with the Dambulla pitch as well. The pace attack, which was ineffective during the Tests, is beefed up by the return of Ashish Nehra and Praveen Kumar, but India’s slow-bowling combination will be interesting to watch. Pragyan Ojha had a successful Test at the P Sara Oval, but with Ravindra Jadeja making the XI for his all-round skills, will India go in with two left-arm spinners (in addition to the part-time bowling of Yuvraj) or will offspinner R Ashwin get an extended run?New ZealandNew Zealand Cricket has smartly lined up matches in all three World Cup host nations in the run-up to the 2011 tournament. The absence of match-winners, such as Daniel Vettori, Brendon McCullum and Jesse Ryder, means New Zealand are a long shot for the tri-series title, but with so many players with so little experience of the subcontinent, they could be the team that benefits the most from the tri-series. The other plus for Ross Taylor’s side is that, while the other two teams have only a few days and no matches to switch from Test to one-day mode, New Zealand have tuned up for the tri-series with two convincing warm-up wins in Sri Lanka.

Nottinghamshire fight back in title tussle

Leaders Nottinghamshire produced a valiant fight back against Yorkshire but will still face an uphill task to avoid a defeat that will throw the County Championship Division One title race wide open. After Andre Adams completed his third five-wicket haul in consecutive matches to bowl out Yorkshire for 264, half-centuries from Mark Wagh, Paul Franks and Adam Voges helped the hosts to reach 357 for 6 in their second innings.Makeshift opener Franks combined with Alex Hales to post Nottinghamshire’s first opening wicket partnership of 50 for the season on the way to 79, with Wagh hitting 90, including 14 fours and two sixes before falling to Adil Rashid (2 for 48). Ajmal Shahzad then removed Samit Patel and Ali Brown cheaply and the late wicket of Voges, caught behind off Oliver Hannon-Dalby for 72, could prove crucial, with Nottinghamshire 152 ahead at the close. After 18 wickets had fallen on day one, it only took 13 balls for Adams to wrap up the Yorkshire innings, trapping Hannon-Dalby lbw with the fourth ball of the day and then finding the edge of Moin Ashraf’s bat to be caught at third slip to finish with 6 for 82, leaving Yorkshire skipper Andrew Gale undefeated on 151.That left Nottinghamshire 205 behind but gutsy application from their top order meant they were able to go ahead of the visitors for the loss of only two wickets. While conditions did not offer the prodigious swing of day one, batting was far from easy in the early stages and both Hales and Franks had to dig deep to survive until lunch.Hales was eventually undone by the away-swing of Ashraf, offering a thin edge to wicketkeeper Gerard Brophy for 24. Franks and Wagh then added 131 in 36 overs before the arrival of Rashid’s leg-spin saw Franks caught at slip by Jacques Rudolph just before tea. With the pitch flattening out, Wagh and Voges pushed Nottinghamshire ahead with some excellent shots either side of the wicket until Wagh, in sight of his third hundred of the season, miscued a lofted drive off Rashid to mid-on, much to his disgust.Shahzad then produced a fiery spell to send Patel and Brown back to the pavilion, although both batsmen played loose shots outside off. When Voges fell four overs before the close to the new ball, Nottinghamshire had seen four wickets fall for 51, but Yorkshire may yet rue dropping Read on 7, with Brophy shelling the most straightforward of chances off Shahzad. Read will resume in the morning on 24, with nightwatchman Darren Pattinson on 20.

Everton set for disaster with Michael Keane

Everton have found themselves in a Premier League relegation battle this season with Frank Lampard desperately trying to save them from a drop into the Championship next season, but he could be heading for disaster if reports are to be believed on Michael Keane’s future at the club.

What’s the word?

According to journalist Paul Brown, Everton will keep hold of Keane this summer due to a potential lack of interest in the player and a contract that runs until 2025.

Brown told GIVEMESPORT;

“Michael Keane and Ben Godfrey are both under contract until 2025, so I can’t see that either of those two will be moved.

“There probably wouldn’t be much of a market for Keane anyway; he’s not playing well this season.”

Major Everton nightmare

It is no secret that the Everton centre-back has had an abysmal season, with a number of serious blunders in his performances that have ultimately cost the team crucial points in their pursuit for safety in top flight football.

Keane tops the list for Premier League own goals this season with two instances where the defender has opened up the scoring for his opponents, with one goal scored against Norwich City at Carrow Road in a 2-1 defeat, and then scoring the first goal again a few weeks later for Tottenham Hotspur in the 5-0 thrashing.

The £65k-p/w centre-back, who was dubbed a “liability” by Trevor Sinclair, then proceeded to get red carded against West Ham United which saw Everton concede another defeat, proving that the player has let his team down time and time again this season with extremely poor decision making in the last few months during the most vulnerable time for the club.

If Lampard manages to secure safety for Everton this season there is no doubt that he will need to strengthen his team to ensure that they don’t find themselves in a similar position next season, and with Keane’s aforementioned mistakes hindering the team’s progress, the manager could be sleepwalking into a major nightmare by not encouraging the club to move him on this summer.

With that being said, the former Chelsea boss must do everything he can to either demote the defender to a squad player by signing a replacement or put Keane on the transfer market in an effort to sell ahead of next season as improving the squad should be the top priority this summer.
