Foster blasts five sixes in five balls

James Foster struck Durham legspinner Scott Borthwick for five consecutive sixes off the first five balls of an over as Essex surged to Pro40 victory at Chester-le-Street

Cricinfo staff05-Sep-2009
ScorecardJames Foster sent a message to the England selectors about his hitting power when he struck Durham legspinner Scott Borthwick for five consecutive sixes off the first five balls of an over as Essex surged to a seven-wicket Pro40 victory at Chester-le-Street. He missed out on the chance to finish the match in grand style with a full house of sixes when the sixth ball was fired down the leg side for five wides.Foster, who was discarded from England’s Twenty20 line-up despite impressing with the gloves in the World Twenty20, cut loose when Essex required 33 to win from four overs. All five sixes came over the leg side, with the first two swept before Foster latched onto three pulls as Borthwick, who had bowled well previously, dropped short. Foster ended with a career-best 83 from 38 balls as Essex won with a comfortable 19 balls to spare.Foster’s pyrotechnics overshadowed a second consecutive hundred for Alastair Cook, another player trying to prove his one-day credentials, as he hit an unbeaten 104 from 108 balls to follow his ton against Hampshire earlier in the week. Cook, not a renowned six-hitter, managed two himself but that was nothing compared to his team-mates. Graham Napier didn’t hold back, either, as his 63 came from 49 balls during which he added 117 in 16 overs with Cook to set-up Essex’s chase. It was a thoroughly entertaining, high-scoring contest as boundaries flowed for both sides. If the ECB’s new 40-over competition reproduces these types of matches next season there will be some good entertainment.Phil Mustard began a productive day for discarded England one-day players as he and Ian Blackwell added 100 in 12 overs to propel Durham’s innings. Mustard’s hundred came from 98 balls, but that had faded from the memory by the time the match came to its explosive conclusion.

Liverpool fans fume at Gomez exit rumour

A number of Liverpool supporters are fuming after Joe Gomez was linked with joining Aston Villa on loan in the January transfer window.

The Reds have clicked back into top form since the international break, securing a trio of resounding home wins over Arsenal, Porto and Southampton.

Saturday’s 4-0 victory against Saints saw Jurgen Klopp’s side produce an excellent performance, swatting their opponents aside at Anfield.

It was a third clean sheet in a row for Liverpool, but someone who hasn’t featured in that time is Gomez, who continues to recover from a calf injury.

The 24-year-old title-winning hero of 2019/20 has only featured for 13 minutes in the Premier League so far this season, and according to The Mirror [via LFC Transfer Room on Twitter], Steven Gerrard wants to take him to Villa on loan in January.

Ryan Broad scored a century in a Sheffield Shield match for the third consecutive time as Queensland came within sight of first-innings points against Western Australia. The Bulls finished the third day 48 short of the Warriors’ total with Chris Hartley on 66 and Chris Simpson unbeaten on 57.With only one day remaining, first-innings honours appear to be the only realistic prize and Hartley and Simpson gave Queensland a strong chance with their unbroken 124-run stand. They came together after the loss of Lee Carseldine, who made 80 and set things on the right track with a 104-run partnership with Broad.Broad resumed the day on 56 and went on to reach 103 from 253 balls. Broad finished last summer with centuries in two consecutive Sheffield Shield games and his form at the start of this season has confirmed his place as one of the most promising batsmen in state cricket. But it was slow going from the Bulls, who at one point during the day scored four runs in nine overs. Queensland’s defensive tactics were partially caused by injuries to their fast bowlers Grant Sullivan and Ben Laughlin, who will not bowl again in the match.

Liverpool fans flock to James Pearce claim

Flocking to Twitter, many Liverpool fans have been left worried following an update on their January transfer plans courtesy of reliable reporter James Pearce.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have been imperious in all competitions so far this season, becoming the first-ever English side to win all six games in a Champions League group stage last night with a 2-1 win over AC Milan (Indian Express).

The high-flying Reds are also well in contention for the Premier League title as we approach the festive period, keeping pace with table-toppers Manchester City as they lay just one point and one place behind the champions.

However, given that key players like Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah will be leaving for the Africa Cup of Nations in January, there have been concerns that Liverpool could lose pace as they are urged to make January signings (talkSPORT).

Making a claim on the Reds’ winter window plans, The Athletic reporter Pearce shared what he believes in a Tuesday night Q&A.

Replying to a supporter who asked if he thinks Liverpool will sign anyone next month, the journalist explained: “As things stand I’d be surprised if LFC sign anyone in January. Personally, I’d love to see another attacking option added to the squad.”

Liverpool fans worried…

Flocking to this claim from a reliable source, it’s little wonder so many Reds supporters are concerned given the absence of both Salah and Mane mid-season – the pair have scored 29 goals between them already this term.

Without January additions, this leaves Klopp arguably short of options going forward, with more responsibility placed on alternatives like Divock Origi and Takumi Minamino. Given the strength in depth of title rivals Man City and Chelsea, there is indeed a cause for concern to be held.

Here’s how some Liverpool supporters responded to Pearce’s claim, with many left disenchanted at the prospect of yet another sparse transfer window from the club.

PIA push for second win

A round-up of the latest batch of matches from the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy

Cricinfo staff28-Oct-2009Group APakistan International Airlines dominated the opening day at the National Stadium, dismissing Karachi Whites for 192 and finishing on 60 for 0. No bowler really threatened; rather it was a proper team effort with each of the six bowlers used picking up at least one wicket. Partnerships were never allowed to blossom – 61 for the third wicket was the highest – and most crucial was how PIA took the last seven wickets for 96 runs. In the 16 overs before stumps Khurram Manzoor and Agha Sabir reduced the lead to 132.The right-arm medium-pacer Junaid Nadir led with the ball for Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited, who had Khan Research Laboratories at 250 for 9 by the close in Rawalpindi. Nadir dismissed the opener Saeed Anwar jnr early but did the real damage later on, reducing KRL from 68 for 3 to 110 for 7. KRL needed the experience of former Pakistan batsman Zahoor Elahi, whose unbeaten 98 in a 119-run eight-wicket stand with Nauman Ali proved massive. Nadir picked up his fifth shortly before stumps.Water and Power Development Authority claimed a slight edge over Lahore Shalimar at the Lahore City Cricket Association Ground, closing the opening day needing 74 run to overtake their total with six wickets in hand. The groundwork for an ultimately pleasing day was done by their bowlers, namely Sarfraz Ahmed and Umaid Asif. The pair chipped in to slice through Lahore Shalimar’s line-up; from 40 for 1 they slipped to 148 for 9 before the last wicket managed to add 25. Sarfraz took 4 for 36 and Umaid 4 for 60, while the top score of the innings was Suleman Khan’s 61. Ahmed Said, the wicketkeeper, had six dismissals. Lahore Shalimar hit back with four wickets before stumps. Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited were the better side on day one at the Sheikhupura Stadium, bowling out Sui Southern Gas Corporation for 160 and reducing the deficit to 59 by stumps. Samiullah Khan returned his best figures of the season, 5 for 41, to do the damage for SNGPL . Only the opener Azeem Ghumman (88) managed to cross 32 and there were only two double-digit scores. Mohammad Hafeez, the former Pakistan allrounder, batted his way to 49 before the close as SNGPL finished a dominant day.Group leaders National Bank of Pakistan achieved a pleasing opening day’s performance against Habib Bank Limited at the Gaddafi Stadium. Having been put in to bat, NBP put up 267 for 5 thanks to Fawad Alam (98), Rashid Riaz (60) and Qaiser Abbas (60*) after they had been reduced to 42 for 3.Group BSeventeen wickets fell on the opening day at the Diamond Club Ground, with hosts Islamabad struggling to overcome bottom-ranked Quetta’s first-innings score. Having opted to field, Islamabad did well to keep the opposition to 163, but stumbled in reply. Rauf Akbar (3 for 31), Shehzad Azam (3 for 71), and Nasrullah Khan (4 for 35) grabbed the wickets in the first half of the day, after which Quetta’s attack gave them hopes of a maiden win this season. Each of the four bowlers used chipped in, with former Pakistan offspinner Arshad Khan taking 2 for 3 in two overs before stumps.A maiden first-class century from Hyderabad wicketkeeper Mohammad Awais could yet prove to be more pivotal than it seems as matters unfold in Muridke. Opting to bat first, Hyderabad had difficulty imposing themselves against Peshawar’s pace attack, led by Nauman Habib and Imran Khan. The new-ball pair found early assistance from the conditions and reduced Hyderabad to 77 for 5, and later 113 for 7, with Imran taking 5 for 85. But Awais, batting at No. 7, refused to budge and provided commendable reliability at one end. With Pir Zulfiqar (14) he added 29 for the eighth wicket and 73 for the ninth with Naeem-ur-Rehman (27), after which in the company of the last man Farhan Ayub he put on an unbeaten 61. At stumps, Awais was on 110 off 211 deliveries.Three wickets from the medium-pacer Mohammad Rameez allowed Rawalpindi claim the day’s honours over Karachi Blues at the National Ground. There was just one half-century in Rawalpindi’s innings of 271 (the opener Babar Naeem made 50) but useful contributions from the captain Naved Ashraf (40), Yasim Murtaza (36) and last man Haseeb Azam (32) proved significant at the end of the day. Rameez, taking the new ball, made incisions early to leave Karachi Blues breathing heavily at 41 for 4.Sialkot crawled their way to 200 for 8 thanks largely to the opener Majid Jahangir’s unbeaten 110 at the Abbottabad Cricket Stadium. Having been put in to bat by Abbottabad, Sialkot failed to impose themselves against a tidy seam attack led by Junaid Khan (3 for 41) but will count themselves in a positive situation after Jahangir’s performance. Batting out the day, he faced 268 balls in 341 minutes.Faisalabad closed on 266 for 4 and will look to step on it on day two at the Iqbal Stadium. Ammar Mahmood (70) and the wicketkeeper Mohammad Salman (89) contributed the bulk of that total through their 121 partnership for the third wicket.
