West Indies labour in huge chase

England’s batsmen took their turn to set up an emphatic victory as the home side wrapped up the one-day series with a thumping 58-run success at Edgbaston

England’s batsmen took their turn to set up an emphatic victory as the home side wrapped up the one-day series with a thumping 58-run success at Edgbaston. Matt Prior’s career-best 87, and a 149-run stand with Owais Shah who made 75, powered England to an imposing 328 and once Chris Gayle fell early there was never any chance of West Indies getting near. This latest hammering completes a forgettable and depressing tour for West Indies, whose performances showed that they never wanted to be here despite the hefty tour fee they have earned. Despite pre-match talk from Gayle of turning the tour around it was their early effort in the field that spoke loudest, with sloppy groundwork and woeful bowling. Then they showed little desire to make a decent fist of the chase, typified by Shivnarine Chanderpaul who pottered to his fifty off 96 balls when the asking-rate was in double figures.England can’t be blamed for making it a one-sided contest and a one-sided series. They have done all that could have been asked of them in the opening weeks of the season, following up their convincing Test wins with efficient displays of one-day cricket. In terms of developing a team that can win from different positions, batting first was a useful experience as it meant they had to pace the innings and assess what a decent target would be.In the end 328, which was the highest ODI total at Edgbaston, and their sixth-highest of all time, was well above-par on a sluggish surface. They were rarely under pressure after Andrew Strauss, in his last international outing before the Ashes, and Ravi Bopara opened with a stand of 81. England’s use of the batting Powerplay has often come under scrutiny, but here they made full use of it by adding 55 in five overs as Prior and Shah cut loose and clean late striking meant 98 off the last 10.They were aided by a poor bowling display as the visiting attack failed to offer any control while the fielding hadn’t improved from the lazy standard that has characterised the trip. Fidel Edwards, recalled after surprisingly missing the Bristol game, was introduced for the tenth over and nearly removed Strauss, on 16 at the time, with his third ball, but Kieron Pollard spilled a tough chance at point. He’d made good ground to reach the ball, but couldn’t hold on as his elbows hit the turf.Bopara began moving through the gears with consecutive boundaries off Edwards’ next over before being undone by the lack of pace in the surface, chopping into his stumps against Dwayne Bravo. However, West Indies couldn’t take the opportunity to apply pressure as Edwards gave Prior early width for his favourite cut shot. Prior and Strauss ran well between the wickets and the England captain even brought out the reverse sweep against Sulieman Benn.Since his return to the one-day team in West Indies, Strauss has shown an innovation to his limited-overs batting that wasn’t there before. His half-century was brought up with another deft sweep against Benn, but off the next delivery he faced the ball beat the outside edge, Strauss was slow in sliding his foot back behind the line and Denesh Ramdin noticed the slow reactions and completed the stumping.Prior and Shah consolidated briefly, but didn’t have to work too hard to increase the run-rate as Gayle kept his field deeply set. Prior’s fifty came off 53 balls and as usual was especially strong through the off side. He had been told to play like a proper batsman, as he does in the Test arena, and this was the ideal innings for the situation. With two players set it was the signal for the batting Powerplay and Shah immediately tore into Edwards with a thumping pull that barely slowed down despite striking Ramaresh Sarwan painfully on the wrist at midwicket. Shah’s display was much more reminiscent of the free-flowing batsman Middlesex fans know so well, rather than the nervous, tense version that failed to cement a Test place this winter. He twice cleared the midwicket boundary with huge blows before being caught on the rope attempting another to end a stand of 149 in 20 overs. If they were to have any realistic hope of chasing down 329, West Indies needed a big innings from their captain, but after two early boundaries Gayle fell in the third over when he spooned an attempted pull to mid-on. After a brief shower, Sarwan opened his account with consecutive fours off Stuart Broad only to fall in the next over when he miscued a drive to cover where Strauss held a smart one-handed catch jumping to his left.Runako Morton was run out after a communication breakdown when he turned for a second and saw Chanderpaul rooted to his crease. It was the sort of mistake that has appeared throughout West Indies cricket in recent weeks, but also highlighted the sharpness in England’s play.Bravo at least provided a momentary spark with two sixes off Dimitri Mascarenhas, but his fun ended when the deserving Tim Bresnan trapped him on the back foot. From there the game drifted towards a soporific finish, a suitable climax to a tour that won’t linger long in the memory. It must be hoped that the ICC World Twenty20 can spark the summer into life.

Spurs in advanced Kessie talks

As per a report in the paper edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport (via Get Italian Football News), a major Tottenham Hotspur transfer claim has emerged involving Franck Kessie.

The Lowdown: Spurs eye Kessie swoop…

Even before the mass transfer hysteria brought on by Antonio Conte’s arrival at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Lilywhites managing director Fabio Paratici has long been linked with a move for the AC Milan star.

Calciomercato lifted the lid on an approach from Spurs all the way back in mid-September, with the Italian source believing that they had even submitted an offer to the player and his entourage to sign him as a free agent next summer.

Kessie’s current deal at the San Siro expires in 2022 akin to a few of Tottenham’s other reported targets from continent, like Alessio Romagnoli for instance, which makes sense given Paratici’s reputation for grabbing bargain deals and loans.

Spurs could snag these big Serie A names for nothing as Paratici seemingly eyes a plethora of bargain free deals at N17, and now a major update has emerged involving Kessie which could excite Spurs fans.

The Latest: Very advanced talks; Conte involved

As per La Gazzetta, as relayed by Get Italian Football News, Tottenham are now in ‘very advanced talks’ to sign Kessie on a free deal next summer from Milan.

Indeed, negotiations between the player’s representatives and Spurs are apparently at a crucial stage and the 24-year-old is eyeing a move away from Italy on a free transfer.

It is also believed that Spurs and Paratici can now meet the Ivorian’s €8 million per season (£6.7m) wage demands and Conte himself is expected to personally try and convince Kessie to make the move.

The Verdict: Exciting claim…

Given Kessie’s obvious quality, this rumour that Spurs talks to sign their target are now at a ‘very advanced’ stage should come as a breath of fresh air.

Arguably the second-best piece of news this week after Conte’s confirmed arrival, the Ivory Coast star would undoubtedly strengthen Conte’s midfield and provide real depth alongside the likes of Oliver Skipp and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

Lauded as an ‘extraordinary’ player by sports writer and broadcaster Nicky Bandini to ESPN, landing the £49.5 million-rated player on a free deal would be Paratici’s biggest transfer coup yet given that valuation.

A well-rounded defensive midfield monster, Kessie scored an impressive 13 goals whilst assisting four of his teammates last season (WhoScored), all the while managing 1.4 tackles and 1.2 interceptions per game in Serie A.

Bagging two strikes so far this campaign in seven Serie A starts, he has continued that proficiency in front of goal whilst averaging an impressive 90.% pass accuracy – more than any Tottenham regular this season (WhoScored).

Making Kessie the first signing of the Conte era would be some show of ambition from the Lilywhites.

Cooley gives Aussies a taste of 2005

Troy Cooley on Australia’s pacemen for the 2005 Ashes

Troy Cooley believes the diversity of Australia’s fast bowling line-up parallels England’s revered attack of four years ago. Cooley’s role in guiding England to Ashes glory in 2005 has been well documented, and the bowling coach, who has since joined the Australian staff, is hopeful of reaching similar heights this summer with his country of origin.England’s attack of 2005 has been rated by many as Test cricket’s finest fast bowling quartet since the West Indians of the 1980s. The reverse swing of Simon Jones, the conventional swing of Matthew Hoggard, the bounce and seam movement of Steve Harmison and the complete package offered by Andrew Flintoff afforded Australia’s quality batting line-up little respite, and set the platform for a famous 2-1 series win.The Australians have yet to finalise their pace attack for the first Test in Cardiff, but appear to be leaning towards a line-up of Mitchell Johnson, Peter Siddle, Brett Lee and Stuart Clark. All four offer vastly different skill-sets – from the left-arm pace and swing of Johnson to the height, accuracy and seam movement of the right-arm Clark – imbuing Cooley with confidence that his line-up is capable of adapting to all conditions.Asked whether he noticed similarities in the flexibility of his current attack and that of England four years ago, Cooley was emphatic. “Exactly,” he said. “If you get all those fast bowlers putting the ball in the right area, you have got a really good mix, and that’s what we are trying to do now. We are working constantly on all that sort of stuff, they are getting up their skills and they are doing pretty well at the moment.”As talented as Australia’s pace line-up is, Cooley is under no illusions as to the difficulty of the task ahead this summer. His two most experienced pacemen, Lee and Clark, are returning from surgery and yet to rediscover the rhythm that, barely 12 months ago, saw them rated among the best new-ball combinations in international cricket. Siddle and Ben Hilfenhaus, meanwhile, are just beginning their international careers and have limited experience in English conditions. At least one, and possibly two, of the aforementioned foursome will miss selection in Cardiff, and managing bruised egos could prove as important a coaching assignment as guiding those in the starting XI.”Of course it’s going to be hard,” Cooley said. “Everyone wants to play but you can only get eleven out on the park. There is a really good feel in this group, they get on really well together. Sure the ones that miss out will be disappointed, but they will be patting the next one on the back to go out and do the job. They will be working extra hard to try and get in the team if there is an opportunity available.”For me it’s all about getting every bowler up and ready. It’s quite exciting to have them all back and … giving the selectors a bit of a hard time in choosing which ones to start on July 8.”The recent spell of hot and dry weather in England has prompted Kevin Pietersen to predict that reverse swing could prove as important a factor this season as it did four years ago. Cooley’s work in grooming Jones and Flintoff into an old-ball force was lauded at the time, and the bowling coach is confident his current crop Australian quicks will prove adept at reversing the ball when conditions suit.”It’s not rocket science,” he said. “You have to get the seam in the right spot, and if you have got an arm action that does that and you have got the speed and the ball condition, you’re laughing. They know that. It’s just a matter of them being able to execute that and practice it. They have got the know-how, they have just got to make sure they work it and get the best out of themselves to be able to produce reverse when its available.”Lee, for one, believes Cooley’s input has been instrumental in improving Australia’s reverse swing capabilities. “It will be a massive weapon for us,” Lee said. “I’ve been watching replays of 2005 and picking Cooley’s brain. It’s important as a bowler – whether you’ve played for 10 years or not – to keep experimenting”In 2005, the ball was swinging back in and we couldn’t get the ball swinging as effectively as the England bowlers did. Now we prepare with the brand new ball, and older balls as well. Troy is with us now, and he was instrumental in 2005.”

Doa a quem doer.

Everton handed Yerry Mina injury boost

Everton saw out a 0-0 draw against Tottenham Hotspur in their latest Premier League game at Goodison Park at the weekend, placing them in 11th place in the league table with 15 points alongside Crystal Palace and Leicester City who also have 15 points on the board heading into the latest international break.

With a two week interval before the Toffees take on Manchester City away from home in their next league fixture, it seems as though Everton could be welcoming back one of their key players just in time to take on Pep Guardiola’s side, which we feel will leave a lot of fans buzzing.

What’s the news?

Speaking after the draw against Antonio Conte’s side, Everton manager Rafa Benitez revealed he is “optimistic” that defender Yerry Mina will be able to return to training in the next few days.

The Spaniard suggested that he is “very close” to a return to action after missing their last three Premier League matches because of a hamstring problem.

Not only will it be good to have Mina back available for selection against City, but it seems as though his return will be coming at the best time. Mason Holgate will be banned for the game against the Manchester club after he was red-carded in the late stages of the match against Tottenham so a replacement will evidently be required.

Since joining the Merseyside club from Barcelona back in the 2018 summer transfer window in a deal worth a reported fee of £28.5m, the 27-year-old, who is currently valued at £18m according to Transfermarkt, has made 83 appearances for the Toffees across all competitions, chipping in with six goals in the process.

In the six Premier League games he’s played in for Everton so far this season, Mina has managed to rack up an average of four clearances per game, 1.5 interceptions per game and one tackle per game, highlighting just how much of a defensive unit he can be for the Toffees.

This also says to us that Mina could well be a vital figure for Everton when their match against City comes around. They have managed to score 22 goals so far this season in the league and have made more passes than any other top-flight team with 7095 made across 11 games.

With this in mind, if the defender does manage to get back to training in the next few days and use his time to fully recover and prepare himself for the City game, his presence will give Everton a great chance of securing a positive result against the reigning league champions. That’s something that will undoubtedly leave supporters delighted.

Ponting ponders spin options

Ricky Ponting has said the soggy conditions at Edgbaston had given them plenty to think about regarding the position of the spinner Nathan Hauritz

Mitchell Johnson’s chances of playing at Edgbaston may have firmed but Australia’s captain Ricky Ponting said the soggy conditions had given them plenty to think about regarding the position of the spinner Nathan Hauritz. As the selectors ponder whether Stuart Clark can squeeze into the line-up, Ponting said Australia’s research into Edgbaston didn’t make for happy reading for the spinners.”We’ve checked the stats for county games this season and spinners are averaging about 60 or 70 per wicket,” Ponting told the . “The numbers aren’t compelling and with all this weather around, the curator claims it will be a typical English seamer.”Hauritz would be unlucky to miss out, having picked up nine wickets in the first two Tests, and he would be a valuable man in Australia’s armoury if they bowl last. Ponting said it was unlikely he would choose to send England in after he did that at Edgbaston in 2005 and England scored 407 on the first day and won the match.”You can get a bit carried away and look into things too deeply,” Ponting said. “There aren’t many pitches you don’t want to bat first on, and if that’s the case you’re bowling last and you want a spinner. We just have to make sure we get our thinking right.”The beauty of our team is that whatever we do we’ve got plenty of options, with Michael Clarke, Simon Katich and Marcus North all able to bowl part-time spin. Marcus North showed he is more than capable of stepping up, with a good, long spell at Lord’s when Nathan Hauritz was injured.”However, North hasn’t picked up a Test wicket this series and it would be a gamble to rely on him as the leading spinner. He has also struggled to turn the ball as sharply as Hauritz, who is aiming to string together three consecutive Test appearances for the first time in his career.
