Leeds could sign a new Pablo Hernandez in Sibley

Leeds United could potentially sign their next Pablo Hernandez in Derby County play-maker Louie Sibley.

What’s the story?

Reports back in January earlier this year had suggested Marcelo Bielsa’s side were interested in signing the 20-year-old, but a deal failed to materialise before the deadline.

Now, with Derby having recently entered into administration, Kevin Phillips has suggested that Leeds could well go back in for Sibley.

He said: “There is an opportunity now for clubs to sign the good players Derby have got for next to nothing. There will probably be some daft offers going in. Derby will need the money unless they find a buyer by then.

“It’s another opportunity for Leeds to sign Louie Sibley. I know very well and let me tell you he’d be a brilliant signing for them.”

Shades of Pablo Hernandez

Able to play just behind the striker, slightly deeper or even out wide, the versatility that Sibley brings to the table is something similar to Hernandez.

According to Football Talent Scout on Twitter, his main strengths are: pace, passing, vision, dribbling, technique, ball control, long shots – exactly the kind of profile you need to play as a number ten.

And, after watching him score a sensational hat-trick against Leeds, Derby’s U23s head coach Pat Lyons, raved: “I’m delighted for him to get the hat-trick. He was outstanding all night. His driving with the ball is unbelievable, the way he goes past players and the way he makes things happen. It was a great achievement for him tonight.”

That ability to go past players like they aren’t there, but also have the end product to boot too, is exactly what Hernandez brought to the table when he was on song at Elland Road.

At just 20, Sibley has still got plenty of time to develop and progress under someone like Bielsa, and would fit in with the kind of younger profile of signings that Leeds have made in the summer transfer window.

Orta could well sign Leeds’ dream long-term heir to Hernandez in Sibley.

Meanwhile, Victor Orta can fix his biggest Leeds howler with this star…

Joachim Andersen was poor against Leicester

Crystal Palace staged a dramatic second-half fightback to secure a point against Leicester City in their Premier League clash at Selhurst Park on Sunday.

The visitors raced into a two-goal lead going into halftime thanks to strikes from Kelechi Iheanacho and Jamie Vardy, but Patrick Vieira’s substitutes proved pivotal, with Michael Olise and Jeffrey Schlupp coming off the bench to rescue a 2-2 draw.

Palace largely dominated proceedings in the opening half an hour, yet a mistake from one of their usually more reliable stars turned the game on its head.

Summer signing Joachim Andersen took a heavy touch when receiving a pass from centre-back partner Marc Guehi under no pressure, allowing Leicester forward Iheanacho to capitalise on his mistake and put the Foxes ahead.

The 25-year-old was then unable to cut out Harvey Barnes’ pass to Vardy for the second, compounding a tricky six-minute spell for the Denmark international.

As per SofaScore, Andersen received a measly match rating of just 5.8 out of 10 for his underwhelming showing, the lowest total awarded to any player on the pitch over the weekend.

It was an out-of-character display from the former Lyon ace who usually bullies his opponents, with Andersen losing three of his seven duels and failing to make a single tackle during the 90 minutes.

But he was especially sloppy when in possession. He lost the ball on a whopping 22 occasions and completed just six of his 17 attempted long balls, leading to an overall pass completion of only 77%.

Andersen proved to be a liability for Palace as he let Vieira down in south London. However, his previous displays for the capital club have been full of promise, meaning the former Nice boss should keep faith with his £20m acquisition following the international break.

And, in other news…Forget Schlupp: Palace beast who won 75% of his duels was Vieira’s real hero

Fresh faces come to the party

With an Ashes tour coming up during the Australian winter, now is the perfect time for the likes of North, Hughes, Hilfenhaus and McDonald to completeirresistible auditions

As Australia neared victory on the final afternoon at the Wanderers,Ricky Ponting stood at second slip and surveyed the men closest to him. The cordon was made up of Ponting, the debutants Marcus North and Phillip Hughes, and also Andrew McDonald, who was playing his second Test. Even the wicketkeeper Brad Haddin was less than a year into hisTest career. For anyone who hadn’t fully comprehended the magnitude of change inAustralian cricket over the past few months, it was a telling image.Barely a year ago, the same positions would have been occupied by AdamGilchrist and Matthew Hayden, and going back a further 12 months,Shane Warne and Justin Langer. Also scattered around the field were the debutant fast bowler BenHilfenhaus and Peter Siddle, who was in his fifth Test. When MitchellJohnson fired in a full one that bowled Dale Steyn, Ponting collectedthe stumps and distributed them among his new colleagues. Each of themdeserved a reward. Whereas Ponting spoke of the team’s “passengers”during the series in Australia, every player contributed inJohannesburg.Of the debutants, North’s 117 in the first innings was the standout.Hughes’ fighting 75 in the second innings was also important andHilfenhaus did what he was asked to do – he ran in hard all day, swungthe ball and collected three wickets for the game, including the keybreakthroughs of Graeme Smith and Mark Boucher in the second innings. Each of their efforts pleased Ponting but none shocked him.”I’m not surprised that Hilfenhaus came in and bowled well because Iknow what he’s capable of,” Ponting said. “I’m not surprised thatHughes came in and made runs because he’s been making runs for thelast couple of years in domestic cricket in Australia. I’m notsurprised that North did because he’s an experienced player that hasfaced his own challenges in a very high domestic competition inAustralia.”I’m not surprised by what they’ve achieved. Now it’s a matter ofthose guys being able to do it again next week. That’s what Testcricket is all about. You don’t get the luxury of having a couple ofweeks between games to get yourself prepared again. It’s aboutbouncing back in a couple of days.”There are several men back in Australia who will be watching withinterest to see how the fresh faces respond after their opening win.Stuart Clark, Brett Lee, Andrew Symonds and Shane Watson would allhave been in the starting line-up in Johannesburg had they been fit.If the new boys can continue to thrive at the highest level, there isno guarantee that there will be places for the more experienced menlater this year.

Clark is a must-pick but Australia will learn more over the next fewweeks about how much they really need the out-of-form Lee, theill-disciplined Symonds and the injury-prone Watson. With an Ashestour coming up during the Australian winter, now is the perfect timefor the likes of North, Hughes, Hilfenhaus and McDonald to completeirresistible auditions. But for all the hype the Ashes will bring, the past four Tests haveshown just how highly South Africa-Australia contests deserve to berated. For the second time in successive Tests these sides have takenthe match into the final session of the fifth day and ended with aresult. The Perth and Melbourne Tests that came before weren’t overbefore lunch on the last day.The battles have been so tight and unpredictable that with a day toplay in Johannesburg, few onlookers were prepared to confidently tip awinner. At a time when Tests in the West Indies and Pakistan havefeatured such high totals that draws appear inevitable, the SouthAfrica-Australia bouts have been immeasurably valuable for a five-dayformat that is trying to hold its place as the game’s pre-eminentstyle.One of the reasons Test cricket may have lost some popularity over thepast decade was the fact that Australia dominated so comprehensively.Since the days of Mark Taylor’s captaincy they have been underdogs asoften as the Harlem Globetrotters. That they flew into South Africa afortnight ago without being favourites was a major shift in the game’sfoundations. That they won the opening Test with one of their least experiencedteams in 20 years is good for cricket. Fierce and even competitionbetween the world’s top teams can only be positive for the game. Thechallenge for Australia’s young squad now is to prove that theirdisplay was not a one-off.

'I've probably never been fitter' – Hayden

Hayden now finds himself preparing to return to a game with which he is still making his peace, and a league that contributed to his premature departure from the Australian team

These are strange days for Matthew Hayden. Three months removed from calling time on his international career – an announcement he had hoped to stave off until after the 2009 Ashes, but expedited due to an extended scoring trough – Hayden now finds himself preparing to return to a game with which he is still making his peace, and a league that contributed to his premature departure from the Australian team.Hayden speaks glowingly of his experiences in the inaugural IPL, despite the Achilles injury that marked the beginning of the end of his international career. It was that ailment, sustained during a training session with the Chennai Super Kings, that sidelined him from the ensuing tour of the West Indies, and stymied the momentum he had built since The Oval Test of 2005. Upon his eventual return, Hayden averaged just 23.93 in his nine Tests. Retirement, in the circumstances, was the most noble course of action.Hayden has said a thousand goodbyes and completed many a lap of honour in the intervening period, only to find himself poised for a return to the middle. The pain of his departure from international cricket might not have entirely subsided – “It’s hard to watch a game you still want to be involved in” – but he is nonetheless buoyant at the prospect of again turning out for the Super Kings, for whom he bludgeoned 189 runs at 63.00 last year.”The players really feel they are part of a revolution in cricket – the way that it is played, the way it’s packaged, and the spectators who are watching it,” Hayden told Cricinfo. “For someone like me, who has been in the game a long time, it blows me away what Twenty20 cricket has done, and is doing, to the sport.”[Last season] was unfortunate. I picked up that [Achilles] injury doing a running session because I wanted to be spot on for that West Indies tour. I came back [from the IPL] on a real high, not realising how bad the injury was. It didn’t feel all that serious, and I wasn’t expecting to miss any games let alone an entire Test series, so it wasn’t until later that I realised what I was actually dealing with. But I don’t look back on [the inaugural IPL] as a negative. If anything I found that really reinvigorated me and revived my enthusiasm, because you could feel you were a part of taking cricket to another level.”Had the Super Kings management harboured concerns for Hayden’s physical condition post-retirement, they were placated within moments of the 37-year-old’s arrival in India for a pre-IPL training camp. Hayden has spent much of the past three months immersed in one of his favourite training pursuits – surfing – and believes he is in better physical condition than at most stages of his international career.KwaZulu-Natal beachgoers have been treated this week to the sight of a trim and toned Hayden surfing the Durban breaks with his one-time opponent, Jonty Rhodes. But the Australian batsman has also found plenty time to hit the nets, where he has discovered that the months away from the game have done little to erode the technique forged over a 103-Test career.”Skills-wise, I’ve had a week and a half in India and hit a million balls, so in that regard I’m up and running,” Hayden said. “But in terms of actually playing, I haven’t picked up a bat since my final Test in Sydney, so it will be interesting to be back out there competing again. It has felt quite good so far.”I’ve probably never been fitter. I’ve done a stack of surfing in the last few months and, as ridiculous as it sounds, it’s probably the best kind of fitness work a batsman can do. It’s all about core strength, balance and stability. Fitness was probably the one thing you couldn’t get to all that much when you were playing all the time. It was sort of game-recover-travel, game-recover-travel.”Had Twenty20 cricket arrived on the scene earlier in his career, Hayden is certain he would have taken the David Warner route and tailored his game to meet the format’s specific demands. Indeed, Hayden took with him a “Twenty20 mindset” into the 2007 World Cup – a tournament he dominated to the tune of 659 runs at 73.22 – and was brutal during his four game stint for Chennai last season. It is a format, he says, to which he is well suited, even at an advanced age.”The World Cup for me was pretty much as good as it got, and that was about me basically going out there and striking the ball; trying to thump it as you would in a 20-over game,” he said. “I wasn’t so much worried about building innings or protecting my wicket. I was looking for boundaries, and it really took my game to another level. It’s something I see in Warner. He turned the cricketing nation on its ear because he could strike a serious ball. He had everyone talking, and shows just how the game is changing.”It’s amazing to see the momentum of Twenty20. At first, it was considered quite a light-hearted thing and even now, in Australia, it’s presented in a way where players are miked up and it’s more about the entertainment. But I think it’s changing elsewhere. Players are working more on how to develop their skills to be successful in Twenty20 cricket, which is the ultimate spectacle, and leaving the singing and jazzing about to others.”

Romano drops Ramsey update for West Ham

Sharing an update on the future of West Ham United target Aaron Ramsey, reliable reporter Fabrizio Romano has revealed what the player is planning to do in December and January.

The Lowdown: West Ham eye Ramsey move…

As per reports from Italy, the Hammers and new recruitment chief Rob Newman have their eyes on the Juventus midfielder.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-updates-2/” title=”West Ham updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Calciomercato (via Sport Witness) claim that West Ham have set their sights on Ramsey and tentative contact has already been made over a potential move.

The Old Lady are apparently eager to offload in January whilst making as much profit as possible and getting his sky high €7 million-per-year (£5.9m) salary off the books.

Now, Romano has shared an update on the player’s situation.

The Latest: Ramsey set for crunch winter call…

As per the reliable transfer journalist, Ramsey is set for a crunch ‘December/January’ transfer call over his future.

“There were no approaches from Newcastle new board for Aaron Ramsey or Mauro Icardi as things stand now,” the Italian explained on Twitter.

“Icardi is not planning to leave Paris Saint-Germain in the next few months. Ramsey will decide his future in December/January.”

The Verdict: West Ham set for wait…

As Newman and West Ham allegedly target the 30-year-old, the question remains as to whether he can indeed improve David Moyes’ options.

Dubbed ‘world class’ by international teammate Joe Allen, Ramsey clearly still has some ability in his locker going by his showings for Wales at Euro 2020.

He is also experienced in the Premier League, having notched 65 goals and 65 assists in 371 appearances for Arsenal before leaving north London.

The only object may be his wages and whether or not Moyes will want that aspect of his transfer potentially splitting the dressing room.

In other news: West Ham now plotting big money bid to sign 115-goal striker who Moyes personally wants, find out more here.
