6,0
WENDEL

5,5
MARCOS CALAZANS
Pareceu um pouco desligado, perdendo lances fáceis. Trocou o meio pela lateral no segundo tempo. Tem qualidade e evoluirá aos poucos.

5,5
GUSTAVO SCARPA

Last pair gets Tasmania a slim lead

Tasmania picked up first-innings points thanks to a 66-run tenth-wicket partnership between Gerard Denton and Ben Hilfenhaus after South Australia’s debutant fast bowler Peter George troubled the middle order

Cricinfo staff04-Nov-2008
ScorecardTasmania picked up first-innings points thanks to a 66-run tenth-wicket partnership between Gerard Denton and Ben Hilfenhaus after South Australia’s debutant fast bowler Peter George troubled the middle order. George collected three wickets in three overs as the Tigers wobbled to 9 for 186, still 46 short of South Australia’s total. But Hilfenhaus and Denton showed impressive resolve to hang on and secure a 20-run advantage, which was finalised when Hilfenhaus was bowled for 31. The pair made the biggest partnership of the innings and at stumps Hilfenhaus joked that he had had a point to prove. “I’ve just been dropped from 10 to 11,” Hilfenhaus said, “so I had something to prove there I reckon.”The openers Dane Anderson and Rhett Lockyear each made starts before falling in the 20s and Travis Birt hung around for a handy 42. Shaun Tait continued to struggle for impact in the four-day format – he collected 1 for 66 in 15 overs and his only wicket was the No. 10 Tim Macdonald. But George, the 202-centimetre fast man, kept South Australia on track with 4 for 56, which was the best first-innings return from a South Australian debutant in ten years. However, it wasn’t enough to earn a lead for his team and at stumps Tasmania had carried some of their momentum into the field.Brett Geeves and Macdonald reduced South Australia to 2 for 33 in the 14th over and Younis Khan failed again and was bowled by Denton for 24. At stumps, South Australia were 3 for 92 with Daniel Harris on 37 and Callum Ferguson on 19.

Haddin arrives with 169 as Australia rule

Brad Haddin found himself as a Test player during an entertaining 169 that swept the match from New Zealand and confirmed his international future

The wicketkeeper Brad Haddin found himself as a Test player and allowed himself to relax during an entertaining 169 that swept the match from New Zealand and confirmed his international future. Haddin, playing his ninth game as Adam Gilchrist’s replacement, was the aggressor throughout the day and comfortably outscored the more considered Michael Clarke, who posted 110.Australia were dismissed for an imposing 535 late on the third day and the total left them as the only side that can win the fixture and the series, which they lead 1-0. At stumps the visitors, who started with a deficit of 265, were 0 for 35 from nine overs.Arriving with Australia at 5 for 247 after two wickets in the third over of the morning, Haddin gave Clarke a start of 48 but reached three figures two overs after the vice-captain registered his third century in consecutive matches at the ground. Haddin continued to score freely after Clarke departed and showed, finally, that he is a long-term prospect. As the breakthrough innings wound down Haddin maintained his tempo, striking two sixes off the legspin of Aaron Redmond, and finished with 24 fours during his 222-ball occupation. On a day of firsts – he did not own a Test half-century when he walked out – he brought up his 150 with a sweep from out of the rough and was charging in the manner of his predecessor. When he was ninth-out, having been caught by Peter Fulton on the midwicket boundary, the spectators rose to applaud their new hero.Clarke kissed his helmet after hesitating over the single that earned his 10th Test hundred, but his celebration was nothing compared to Haddin’s when he raised three figures. He swung his arms and lifted them high towards the dressing room and the players who understood his battles of the past two months.Haddin, a new father, struggled during the tour of India and had plenty of moments of danger in Adelaide, but survived to unleash some fabulous boundaries along with a few streaky ones. The innings was addictive from the moment he arrived with a tentative fend, a skewed drive and a caught-behind appeal that convinced the New Zealanders but not the umpire. He gets so nervous before batting that at times he verges on being physically sick, and it was not until the lead-up to lunch that Haddin started to look secure. By then he had already reached fifty. After the break Daniel Flynn missed a simple chance at mid-on – it just brushed his right thumb before hitting his chest on the way to the ground – when Haddin was on 72. Soon Haddin was exploding through the nineties in eight deliveries.Clarke’s hundred came from the first ball of Ryder’s over, then Haddin square-drove a boundary, thumped one straight and lifted another over mid-off to leap to 97 before the bowler had finished. When Tim Southee’s offering on Haddin’s pads was clipped in front of square it sealed the milestone and his position in the side. The risk-for-reward approach had been successful.More fortune arrived on 102 when he brushed a close-in catch to short leg off Daniel Vettori but was given not out. Vettori had been lifted for four clever leg-side boundaries by Haddin, and had employed a defensive over-the-wicket line for much of the day. He also added to his team’s problems by dropping a caught-and-bowled off Brett Lee ten minutes before tea.Lee (19) punished Vettori after the interval before the first slip Ross Taylor took a leaping one-handed catch off Iain O’Brien, who had – bravely or stupidly – peppered Lee with short ones. Vettori started the day with a limp but did not let it affect him and operated for 30 overs straight before lunch till after tea.In 59.4 overs in the innings Vettori had only the wickets of Simon Katich and the No. 10 Nathan Hauritz next to 124 runs. Sometimes the game isn’t fair. Redmond captured two victims, the same number as Chris Martin, while O’Brien was the most successful with 3 for 111.Clarke was a comforting influence on Haddin, whose batting can flap on the border between aggressive and irresponsible, and they added 181 runs for the sixth wicket. The No. 5 Clarke was much more controlled as he struggled for fluency at times and excelled at others.Clarke’s hundred arrived from his 218th delivery, showing his patience, and he was more content clipping the ball around than trying to mirror the attack of his New South Wales team-mate. The innings was important for the team and also made up for his near-miss in the first Test in Brisbane when he was bowled by Jesse Ryder for 98. Ryder was involved in Clarke’s dismissal again when he flayed a drive to him in the gully off O’Brien.Australia started the day at 3 for 241 and New Zealand experienced some false hope when Martin removed Michael Hussey on 70 to a misguided pull and then benefitted from a caught-behind decision against Andrew Symonds. Haddin and Clarke quickly shut down the brief revival.

Gerrard provides Helander update

Steven Gerrard has provided an update on Rangers centre-back Filip Helander following his injury against St Johnstone.

What’s the latest?

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has admitted that Filip Helander’s injury is a concerning one after he was stretchered off against St Johnstone on Saturday, although he does not know the full extent of the blow at this moment in time.

He told The Scotsman:

“I’m concerned. He’s with the doctors now. He’s got ice on it and is bandaged up. It doesn’t look good.

“But until we scan it and assess it in the next 24-48 hours time, we’re not too sure.”

Gerrard will be gutted

Gerrard will surely be gutted by Helander’s injury as it could be a major blow to the club in the short term, with a Europa League clash coming up against Lyon on Thursday.

Whilst there is no definitive timeline on his injury, the fact that he was stretchered off with a knee injury and that the manager said that “it doesn’t look good” are not signs which suggest he’ll be back in action any time soon.

Therefore, the reality of the situation is that Rangers could now be without Helander for an extended period of time, which will weaken the club in the Europa League and the Scottish Premiership.

The Swedish international has proven himself to be a solid defender for the Gers in recent years, particularly impressing in the 2020/21 campaign.

Last season, Helander averaged an excellent SofaScore rating of 7.10 in 22 appearances. He won an eye-catching 68% of his duels over the entire campaign, whilst helping Rangers keep 13 clean sheets in his 22 games.

Gerrard once hailed the £14k-per-week beast as a leader and praised the experience he brings to the side when he is on the pitch. He said:

“I think he has shown great leadership. He had a little bit of an ankle issue before the international break and never played for Sweden.

“I decided to go with Katic at Hearts for the real physicality of Ikpeazu and then use Fil’s experience and leadership away to Porto, which I knew was going to be more of a technical game. One that needed experience.”

This is why the ex-Liverpool midfielder will be gutted that he could now be without the 28-year-old for the foreseeable future. He looks set to lose a quality, proven, option at centre-back and will now need other players to step up and show that they can produce equally solid displays in defence.

Nuno must axe Spurs disaster vs Rennes

Tottenham Hotspur kickstart the inaugural UEFA Europa Conference League group stages with a trip to France to face Stade Rennes later this evening and manager Nuno Santo has plenty to ponder in terms of team selection.

The north London outfit head saw their unbeaten start to the new Premier League season come to a crashing end after they were defeated 3-0 by Crystal Palace, so the Portuguese coach will be looking for a reaction in a competition that they are amongst the favourites to win.

Spurs are facing plenty of injury and availability problems.

South American trio Davinson Sanchez, Cristian Romero and Giovani Lo Celso are not back in the country just yet, whilst this game may come too soon for the likes of Heung-min Son, Steven Bergwijn and Eric Dier.

One of the biggest takeaways from Saturday’s disappointing result was that the midfield Nuno deployed just doesn’t work, though there is an easy solution to that problem.

He opted for Harry Winks to partner Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Oliver Skipp in the engine room but that turned out to be very one-dimensional and not balanced whatsoever.

In fact, the 25-year-old Englishman was hooked after just an hour, which should be rather damning on his chances of starting over in Rennes this evening, especially with the more creative and technically gifted Tanguy Ndombele back in the squad.

It was only four years ago that Winks ran the show during Spurs’ shock win over Real Madrid, where he outshone former Spurs midfielder Luka Modric in the Champions League.

Soon after, Mauricio Pochettino lauded him as the “perfect” midfielder, comparing him to Barcelona duo Xavi and Andres Iniesta.

But after his lacklustre display against Palace this weekend, The Times’ Gary Jacob described the £18m-rated Hotspur Way youth product as ‘stale’, whilst club legend Gary Roberts dubbed him an “average player” back in June.

Although Winks made 91% of his passes, these were mainly sideways and behind, without much effort to get forward. By comparison, the Eagles’ loan star Conor Gallagher made himself available all over the pitch and would’ve been the perfect option to have in there alongside Hojbjerg and Skipp.

Credit: The Times

Nuno must look to bounce back and kickstart Spurs’ quest for glory in Europe with a positive performance in France, and that just won’t happen if Winks is starting in midfield.

It’s time for him to be ruthless and axe him from the XI later this evening.

Gul, Rafatullah set up easy win

Three wickets from Umar Gul and a comfortable fifty from Rafatullah Mohmand eased NWFP to an easy six-wicket win over Baluchistan Bears at the National Stadium in Karachi

Three wickets from Umar Gul and a comfortable fifty from Rafatullah Mohmand eased NWFP to an easy six-wicket win over Baluchistan Bears at the National Stadium in Karachi. Their first win also kept alive their hopes of reaching the final, to be played against the Punjab Stallions. If Sind lose to Punjab tomorrow and NWFP can get past the Federal Areas the day after, they will face Punjab in the final on December 24.Unseasonal rains over the last two days had forced the abandonment of one game and weather conditions in the port city meant Gul had an easy decision to make on winning the toss: field first. This he duly did and then played a huge role himself in dismantling Baluchistan.Under partially overcast skies, as the ball nipped around. Gul and Samiullah Khan Niazi both put together an exemplary opening, stifling Baluchistan’s start and sending back both openers. That settled the tone for the innings. Baluchistan could only scrape together runs, against a committed seam attack. When they did fight back, through the in-form Saeed Bin Nasir and captain Misbah-ul-Haq, left-arm spinner Mohammad Aslam Qureshi popped in for a tight spell. He dismissed both in swift succession, leaving Gul to do one of the things he does best: mop up the tail. The target of 153 was barely a challenge, less so as the sun came out. Yasir Hameed helped Mohmand along against an unthreatening attack. There was time enough for Mohmand – once close to Pakistan selection when Inzamam-ul-Haq was captain – to unveil a few strokes and his unbeaten 75 led them home with 98 balls remaining. It also kept their hopes alive for another day.
