Celtic: Fraser Forster update emerges

Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster is set to leave for free next summer in what has been described by Hampshire Live as a massive boost to Celtic.

The Lowdown: Forster links

The Hoops have bolstered their goalkeeping ranks this summer with the signing of Joe Hart for just over £1m.

He’s played every minute under Ange Postecoglou since arriving from Tottenham, however, before his arrival, Celtic were linked with a move for Forster.

Reports last month suggested that Forster wouldn’t be allowed to depart St Mary’s, but that has all changed going forward.

The Latest: Free transfer

Hampshire Live shared a story on Wednesday, claiming Forster is set to leave next summer on a free transfer when his contract expired.

The report labels it as a massive boost to Celtic, with Forster, described as ‘unbelievable’ by Scott Bain, a long-term target for the Hoops.

The Verdict: Avoid

Even though Dominic McKay will now have the chance in January to tie up a pre-contract agreement for Forster ahead of a free transfer the following summer, Celtic should avoid any deal.

They already have Hart, Bain, Vasilis Barkas and Conor Hazard on the books, so don’t need to add a fifth shot-stopper on £70,000-a-week.

If they hadn’t secured Hart and Ange Postecoglou had the same troubles as Neil Lennon did deciding between Bain, Barkas or Hazard, then perhaps a New Year swoop for Forster could have been a shrewd call, but not now.

It appears as if Celtic may still be keeping tabs on Forster, though, with Hampshire Live continuing to link Forster with another return to Parkhead, so it could be one to keep an eye on over the course of the season.

Newcastle United eyeing Man Utd’s Phil Jones

Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce is eyeing a late transfer window swoop for Manchester United defender Phil Jones.

What’s the story?

The Magpies have had a quiet summer thus far in terms of incomings, with Joe Willock being the only notable arrival after seeing his move from Arsenal turned into a permanent one for around £25m.

Now, according to The Daily Mail, Bruce is keen to bring in players with Premier League experience, and has got his eye on England’s Jones.

He’s a “waste of time”

If Newcastle are seriously contemplating making a move for Jones – who himself has had numerous injury problems in recent years and has missed a staggering 204 games for United since joining them – then they really need to have a strong, hard look at themselves.

Even if you didn’t include the injury issues he’s had, his performances on the pitch have left a lot to be desired too, with former Arsenal defender Martin Keown admitting he’s somewhat of a liability.

He said: “I don’t like to see someone be a figure of ridicule. But sometimes he looks like he’s on roller-skates, sometimes he looks like the stunt-man of the team.

“He’s just got to be calm and somebody has got to help him. I don’t know how much help he’s getting, but he needs it. If they haven’t got a defensive coach they need to get one, get in his ear and help him. There’s got to be a decent player in there still, but somebody has got to help him. He’s at a crossroads in his career.”

The last time Jones stepped foot on the pitch in the Premier League, he finished the campaign averaging more fouls per game than he did successful tackles or interceptions, and averaged a shocking 6.39 match rating as per Whoscored.

The fact Jones has remained at Old Trafford rather than trying to find a new club much sooner is something his former teammate Rio Ferdinand has openly questioned, leading to some very scathing criticism indeed – a question of attitude that should have the Magpies running away too.

He said: “If I was in a squad with someone like that, I’m not talking to them. They’re a waste of time. Why am I chatting to you and giving you any energy? Taking that away from my other teammates who are here to play and go into battle for 90 minutes every week.”

Earning a reported £75k-a-week, Newcastle would just be heading for a disaster both on and off the pitch with the kind of player they would be getting, and the money that they would have to pay him as well.

It’s a move that, put simply, is a “waste of time”.

Groenewald leaves Edgbaston for Derby

Tim Groenewald has left Warwickshire to bolster Derbyshire’s squad for the 2009 season

Cricinfo staff15-Oct-2008Tim Groenewald has left Warwickshire to bolster Derbyshire’s squad for the 2009 season.Groenewald, 24 – a South African who is England-qualified – left Warwickshire by mutual consent, and his addition to the Derbyshire squad was met with excited anticipation by their head of cricket, John Morris.”I am delighted to have added to our squad with a talented cricketer who, like Garry Park, is of a good age with plenty of improvement left in him,” Morris said. “Tim is an ambitious cricketer who adds depth to our seam attack as well as being a dynamic talent with the bat. He is an excellent addition to our squad as we look forward to the 2009 season.”A big-hitting batsman and fast-medium bowler, Groenewald posted a career-best first-class score of 78 against Bangladesh A in July and his best bowling performance to date (5 for 24) came against Cambridge in May.”We fully understand that Tim is keen to make his mark in the game and he has been disappointed not to get more first-team cricket so it would be wrong of us to stand in his way at this stage of his career if he can get greater opportunities elsewhere,” said Ashley Giles, Warwickshire’s director of cricket. “We all join in wishing him well for his future with Derbyshire and a successful cricket career.”

E multou. Desgraçadamente cheguei tarde novamente naquela mesma semana.

Liverpool dealt James Milner injury blow

Liverpool have been dealt an injury blow ahead of their upcoming Premier League clash at Anfield on Saturday.

What’s the latest?

In recent comments cited by the Liverpool website, Jurgen Klopp revealed that James Milner looks set to miss the visit of Chelsea this weekend, as the midfielder has not recovered from the injury which ruled him out of the victory over Burnley last weekend.

Speaking about the current state of his squad, Klopp said: “Millie will not be ready – I think that’s it pretty much.

“All the rest trained and looked good and sharp – we should better be because, obviously, Chelsea is a tough one as well. That’s already kind of like the Champions League, just in the Premier League!”

Klopp will be gutted

While Milner is no longer a bonafide starter in the Liverpool team, having been picked in the starting XI just 20 times over the club’s 2019/20 and 2020/21 league campaigns, the absence of the 35-year-old on Saturday will nevertheless leave Klopp gutted, as the midfielder’s versatility and experience would have been invaluable in a fixture against a side as impressive as Chelsea.

Indeed, having been deployed at left-back, right-back, defensive midfield, left-midfield, central midfield and right-midfield during his time at Anfield, Milner is the archetypal utility man who can be deployed to nullify a particularly dangerous opposition player – of which Chelsea have many.

Furthermore, Milner is a player whom Klopp often brings on to see a game out having taken the lead – something that clearly works, considering the £2.7m-rated man’s average of 2.12 points per game since his move to Liverpool back in 2015.

However, the German coach will have to make do without the England international against Thomas Tuchel’s side on Saturday, a game in which at least one of Liverpool’s or Chelsea’s 100% record so far in the Premier League will have to give.

Big PictureAhmedabad Rockets will need more than home support to earn points against table-toppers Royal Bengal Tigers in game No. 15 of the ICL 20-20 Indian Championship. Bengal are unbeaten in the tournament so far but, with the tournament entering its middle stages, Ahmedabad cannot afford to drop many more points after losing their previous match to Lahore Badshahs.Apart from a resounding nine-wicket win against Mumbai, Ahmedabad’s form has been erratic in the tournament. They have had to chase in all four matches but have lost all the three games in which they chose to field. Standalone performances from Reetinder Singh Sodhi against Delhi, and from captain Damien Martyn against Chennai weren’t enough and their batsmen failed to chase Lahore’s 136 on Sunday.Bengal are, so far at least, the favourites for the title. Their new signing Hamish Marshall has been a revelation, their captain Craig McMillan has also runs, and their batting line-up looks formidable with players such as Lance Klusener, Abhishek Jhunjhunwala and Andre Adams. Another key factor for them has been their bowlers, notably Upul Chandana and Abu Nechim, who derailed Mumbai with his 3 for 22.Players to watchJason Gillespie has only four wickets from four matches in the tournament so far and will be keen to make a greater impact with the new-ball for Ahmedabad.Ryan Campbell is an explosive wicket-keeper batsmen who opens the batting for Ahmedabad. However, he’s had three misses out of four innings and will be keen to repeat his innings against Mumbai, when he struck 92 of 57 balls. Hamish Marshall has had an immediate impact for Bengal, scoring two quick half-centuries in the first three matches. He’s not an explosive hitter but has been able to successfully adapt his orthodox technique to the demands of Twenty20 cricket.Craig McMillan has scored 111 runs at a strike-rate of 150 in the tournament so far and has led his team superbly to three wins out of three matches. He’ll be gunning for the fourth tomorrow.Quotes”As a senior player with handy international experience I am here to help the Indian players who could later go on and represent their country”
“Despite being the first year, we completed in the semifinals of all three tournaments last time. We are hoping to pull it off this year”

Gerrard has big McCrorie decision to make

When Rangers resume after the international break, Steven Gerrard has a big decision to make when it comes to selecting a goalkeeper.

After both Allan McGregor and Jon McLaughlin were ruled out after testing positive for covid, Gerrard was forced to select McCrorie in between the sticks for the games against Alashkert and Celtic.

The 23-year-old shot-stopper, who had never played for Rangers’ senior side before, impressively kept clean sheets as Rangers drew 0-0 and 1-0 in those respective games, which should surely give Gerrard something to think about ahead of their game against St Johnstone next weekend.

A graduate of the Rangers academy, McCrorie has spent each of the last four seasons out on loan, progressing through the leagues with spells at Berwick Rangers, Greenock Morton, Queen of the South and Livingston.

[freshpress-quiz id=“593776”]

Last season saw the ‘keeper make 26 appearances for the Lions, in which he conceded 46 goals and kept four clean sheets, and whilst this isn’t the greatest record, it gave him some much-needed experience in the top-flight, which definitely will have helped him through the recent fixtures.

After he made his debut in the draw against Alashkert, which secured Rangers’ spot in the Europa League group stages, assistant manager Gary McAllister was full of praise for the young goalkeeper, saying:

“We have loads of belief in Robby and he didn’t let us down.”

“I thought he dealt with the ball well and the one awkward shot that came in low and bounced in front of him, I thought he handled that well.

“So it is a very good debut.”

McCrorie is reaching the age where he needs to be playing senior football regularly and although Gerrard has alternated between McLaughlin and McGregor so far this season, they are 33 and 39 respectively, so the 41-year-old manager should definitely consider giving the 23-year-old more first-team opportunities after he proved himself in those aforementioned displays.
