Arsenal back in for Martin Odegaard

Arsenal are eyeing up a fresh transfer move for Real Madrid’s Martin Odegaard as they look to bolster their creative options this summer.

What’s the story?

The Norway international joined Mikel Arteta’s side on loan back in the January transfer window, but it had since been claimed in recent weeks that he would not be returning to the Emirates Stadium, instead looking to fight for his place at the Bernabeu.

However, Football.London have now claimed that the Gunners haven’t given up on making a late move for Odegaard, with a belief that Madrid would be open to offers for him.

Arsenal’s new Ozil

Described as a “phenomenon” by Norwegian football writer Lars Sivertsen, Odegaard is the kind of creative playmaker who appears to be tailor-made to come in and finally replace Mesut Ozil – another creator who came to the club from Real Madrid – at the Emirates.

Spanish football journalist Alvaro Montero said: “He’s very similar to Mesut Ozil, he’s left-footed, he plays extremely well between the lines and between the striker and the midfielders. Maybe he even has more goal threat than Mesut Ozil, but he travels a little less. He’s an amazing player and I think he’ll be an amazing player for Arsenal and for Mikel Arteta.”

Having seen him impress during his loan spell at the Emirates, Arteta himself lauded Odegaard’s ability and leadership, saying: “Well, he’s showing that I think from week one. The way he steps on the pitch, he always wants the ball, the way he commands the pressing. He’s been really influential.

“I think we’ve all been a bit surprised because he looks really shy and humble, but when he steps on that pitch he’s a real character and he loves to play football.”

While the Norwegian didn’t exactly set the world alight in his first few months with the Gunners, he showed more than enough, both with his creativity and off-the-ball work, to suggest that he could become a real star over a longer period.

As per WhoScored, Odegaard averaged 1.4 key passes per game in the Premier League, which was the joint-highest of any Arsenal player last season along with Emile Smith Rowe. His 0.9 dribbles per match put him in the top five, while his impressive 90.9% pass accuracy was good enough to place him second in the Gunners’ entire squad.

The £36m-rated star could finally arrive on a permanent deal and banish any lingering thoughts about Ozil at the Emirates.

Meanwhile, Arsenal could sign their new Vieira in this star…

SPCL 3 – Gosport keep winning but not likely to be enough

Gosport Borough have won all five games they’ve played since late June, but it’s not been quite enough to propel them into the Southern Electric Premier League, Division 3 promotion frame

Mike Vimpany (as published in Daily Echo)01-Sep-2002Gosport Borough have won all five games they’ve played since late June, but it’s not been quite enough to propel them into the Southern Electric Premier League, Division 3 promotion frame.Purbrook and St Cross Symondians went into today’s final round of matches as firm favourites to claim the top two places.Andy Mengham’s side needed ten points from Ventnor’s visit to The Heath to go up as champions, while five bonus points from Havant II would have been enough to secure the probable runners-up spot for St Cross, who just missed out last term. But, after a modest four wins out of eight return from the opening two months of the season, Gosport will probably be well pleased with a probable third spot.Queenslander Nathan Collins, who becomes a naturalised Englishman for the purposes of SPL regulations next season, has once again led the way for the Borough. He’s bagged 38 wickets so far and, unless Alton’s Julian Ballinger picks up eight or more victims at Redlynch & Hale today, is virtually assured the Premier 3 bowling award for the second consecutive season. But Gosport have also done pretty well with the bat – Mike Rees, Stuart Magee and Pete Robson all homing in on a 400-run aggregate before today’s finale with Flamingo.Gosport’s fifth successive win came after a run chase at Ridge Meadow, where they cruised past Hambledon’s 248 (Leigh Burns 65) for the loss of five wickets – Collins showing his batting prowess with a neat 74.Hambledon’s season has been in complete contrast to that of Gosport, who inflicted their fifth successive defeat – a sequence of results which is set to leave them in third from bottom position.Winning or losing five games on the trot seems to be a regular occurrence in Premier 3 these days.Take Alton, for example.Top of the pile with seven wins out of eight at the start of July, their fortunes dipped dramatically with five straight defeats – a run they finally arrested with last weekend’s 62-run win over Portsmouth II.Alton must have thought promotion was theirs for the taking when they bowled over Purbrook and St Cross Symondians in late June. But, just like last season, it all went horribly wrong for Julian Ballinger’s side. They completely lost their way – being skittled for a meagre 50 by Gosport two weeks ago – and went to Redlynch today still searching to finish in a top six slot.Alton’s long overdue eighth win came at the expense of Portsmouth II – Michael Heffernan hitting a maiden century he must have feared was always to elude him.Four times previously the eldest of Paddy’s two cricketing sons had perished in the nervous 90’s, but as Alton ran up 245 against Portsmouth, so Michael notched his maiden 100.And what an appropriate time to do it – with all four members of the Heffernan clan in the Alton side !Rumour has it that Paddy’s wallet took a pounding last Saturday night …..But Heffernan’s celebrations will pale into insignificance alongside those at Purbrook Heath tonight, should Andy Mengham’s side lift the championship.Purbrook took a massive step nearer the title with a thrilling one-run win at Hursley Park – an absorbing match in which South African Willem Prozensky underlined what a talent he has. While partners came and went with regularity, Prozesky struck a quite superb 125 to take his season’s run aggregate to 924, over two-thirds of which (652) have come in boundaries.Purbrook’s 268-8 was trimmed, leaving Hursley Park a target score of 215 – which they almost got on the back of the day’s second splendid century by Paul Edwards, who was run out as the Park finished on 214-9.It was a terrific game that neither side deserved to lose. The win all but wrapped things up for Purbrook, who expect to be accompanied by St Cross into Premier 2 next season.Symondians almost tied things up themselves with an eight-wicket win over Hook & Newnham Basics (171) – Kiwi Mark Parker hitting an unbeaten 75 to ease the visitors home.Havant II pair Simon Greenfield, with an unbeaten 110, and Jon Owen (88) led a 275-2 run spree against severely weakened Flamingo, while a five-wicket spell by Fred Smith (5-21) and punchy 75 from Neil Westhorpe carried Ventnor to an 83-run win over Leckford.New Milton christened their new Fernhill HQ with a low-scoring three-wicket win over Waterlooville, but Redlynch & Hale sank to a hefty 176-run defeat at Hartley Wintney, where the village bowlers took a 280-run pounding.Paultons scored a timely late win, John Robinson hitting 66 in a 226-run total against Bashley-Rydal II, who faded after Steve Latimore’s bright beginnings and dipped to 200-9 at stumps.

Saints eye Tanganga

According to Sky Sports, Southampton are interested in signing Japhet Tanganga on a temporary deal from Tottenham Hotspur this summer.

The Lowdown: Saints looking to boost defensive options

After finishing in a disappointing 15th place in the Premier League last term, the Saints will be looking to improve this coming campaign, particularly at the back.

Indeed, it seems Ralph Hasenhuttl is looking to boost his defensive options – Romain Perraud (southamptonfc.com) and Danyl Simeu (chelseafc.com) have already joined, and the St. Mary’s Stadium outfit are now looking at another defender as well.

The Latest: Saints eye Tanganga

As per this latest report from Sky Sports, the Saints are looking at adding Tanganga to their squad.

Galatasaray are already said to have made an offer for the versatile 22-year-old, with Burnley also believed to be in pursuit.

The two English clubs have an advantage of the Turkish giants, as the young defender would prefer a loan move within the Premier League.

The Verdict: Interesting option

It was clear what Southampton’s weak point was last season. In 38 games in the top flight, they conceded a huge 68 goals – only relegated West Brom shipped more. With the signings of Perraud and Simeu, Hasenhuttl has of course pinpointed the problem as well.

While mainly a centre-back, £7.2m-rated Tanganga has shown his versatility by also appearing at both left-back and right-back (Transfermarkt). Former Spurs manager Jose Mourinho, who gave him his debut, called him “amazing” last year (via The Evening Standard) – he clearly has a bright spell ahead of him.

Hasenhuttl has recently stated that, even though he expects Jannik Vestergaard to stay this term, the club are awaiting offers for the Denmark international (Hampshire Live). If he does depart, Tanganga could be an interesting replacement.

In other news, Southampton fans react to this transfer link.

Vaughan to sit out tour opener

PERTH, Oct 21 AAP – England’s form batsman Michael Vaughan will sit out his team’s tour opener, but insists his knee injury will not stop him playing in the upcoming Ashes series starting next month.

Tom Wald21-Oct-2002PERTH, Oct 21 AAP – England’s form batsman Michael Vaughan will sit out his team’s tour opener, but insists his knee injury will not stop him playing in the upcoming Ashes series starting next month. The Yorkshireman enjoyed a remarkable northern summer in which he registered four Test centuries including scores of 195 and 197 against India. But his right knee, which he had a minor operation on last month, has pulled up sore forcing him out of the match against an ACB Chairman’s XI at Lilac Hill tomorrow. His knee will be of an enormous concern for the England team as it already has some major injury worries in the 16-strong squad. But the 27-year-old said he hoped to be fit in time for the two-day match against Western Australia starting at the WACA ground on Thursday.Allrounder Andrew Flintoff and Darren Gough will also miss the Lilac Hill fixture as they try to recover from respective hernia and knee operations. But Vaughan will arguably be the tourists’ biggest concern as his partnership with Marcus Trescothick at the top of the order is seen as pivotal to England’s hopes of winning an Ashes series for the first time in 16 years.Vaughan has scored 1710 runs in 23 Tests and his average of 47.50 is easily the best in the England team. The only other batsman with an average of more than 40 is Trescothick.”A bit of dehydration from the flight and obviously a little bit of swelling (of the knee) but it has gone really well the past 48 hours,” Vaughan said today. The right-hander is one of the great unknowns for Australia as he missed the 2001 Ashes series also because of a knee injury.Vaughan has only played one match against Australia in a one-day encounter at Old Trafford last year but was bowled first ball by quick Jason Gillespie.”I have played one game so far and only lasted one ball, so things can only get better,” he said. And despite averaging an impressive 90 in six Tests over the northern summer he also conceded he was also dismissed first ball by Australian paceman Glenn McGrath in their only encounter in a county match. However the amiable Vaughan didn’t appear very concerned about his previous efforts against Australia’s pace attack. He said he and Trescothick would try to play in a positive fashion against McGrath who reached the 400 Test wicket mark in Sharjah today.Vaughan said the openers probably wouldn’t follow New Zealand’s tactic against Australia last summer of leaving anything slightly outside of off stump.”If it is there to leave you have got to leave it, but I think the positive approach is the best approach,” he said.”Marcus and I are the type of guys who go out looking to be positive.”But Glenn McGrath is going to have periods of play where he’s bowling very well and leaving the ball might be the best option.”But we’ll have to judge the wicket and the best way to play on the day.”The first Ashes Test starts on November 7 in Brisbane.Meanwhile the ACB Chairman’s XI made one change with West Australian batsman Chris Rogers replacing teammate Scott Meuleman who has a thigh injury. The England team is: Nasser Hussain (c), Mark Butcher, Andrew Caddick, John Crawley, Richard Dawson, Ashley Giles, Matthew Hoggard, Stephen Harmison, Simon Jones, Robert Key, Alec Stewart, Marcus Trescothick, James Foster. The ACB Chairman’s XI is: Michael Hussey (c), Ryan Campbell(v-c), Michael Clark, Kade Harvey, Brad Hogg, Chris Rogers, Matthew Nicholson, Marcus North, Callum Thorp, Paul Wilson, Kim Hughes, David Hookes, Wayne Clark.

Pundit: Rangers star Ryan Kent being linked to Leeds not a shock

Michael Ball is not surprised to see Premier League clubs courting Rangers winger Ryan Kent.

Kent joined the Gers from Liverpool in a £7million switch two years ago and has gone on to become a key member of Steven Gerrard’s side.

The 24-year-old scored 13 goals and contributed 15 assists in 52 appearances as Rangers ended a decade-long wait to reclaim the Scottish Premiership title last season.

Kent also grabbed an assist as Rangers suffered a 2-1 defeat to Malmo in their Champions League third qualifying round first leg earlier this week.

The Oldham-born winger is being tracked by Leeds United, who are also keen on Rangers team-mate Glen Kamara following an impressive Euro 2020 with Finland.

While Kent has maintained he is fully focused on enjoying more success at Ibrox, he has admitted to enjoying being linked to other clubs thanks to his fine form.

Former Rangers left-back Ball concedes speculation Kent could leave the Glasgow club for a return to England has not come as a shock.

Speaking exclusively to The Transfer Tavern, Ball said: “When you start playing for Rangers and put in performances like Ryan does, it’s no surprise that there are suitors down south.

“Week in, week out there are rumours of clubs taking him on.”

Nerves will be tested in knock-out stage

The Friends Provident Trophy has reached the quarter-final stage with all four matches being played on Wednesday. Cricinfo takes a look at the four games and how the sides match up

Durham v Nottinghamshire, Chester-le-Street
The home side are coming off a fine victory against Sussex in the Championship so will be in high spirits as they continue the defence of their title. It was touch-and-go for a while as to whether they would even qualify from the North Division, but they found form at the right time. “This is an important week and we are getting down to the business end of the competition,” said Dale Benkenstein. “Ten days ago we had a mountain to climb but turned things around and now we are two games away from getting back to Lord’s. I think it suits us being at home and I think we are feared at home and playing this quarter-final at Riverside is a big advantage to us.”Nottinghamshire have had a few days off after not playing the last round of four-day games so will be fresh for the challenge. Will Jefferson is back in the squad and they have a deep batting order with Mark Ealham showing age hasn’t wearied him with bat or ball. Darren Pattinson, the Australian import, has been a revelation and is helping cover for the absence of Ryan Sidebottom and Stuart Broad with England.Kent v Somerset, Canterbury
Kent always had the makings of a side that could impress in one-day cricket this season, with so many allrounders that they often bat down to No. 9 or 10. The availability of Justin Kemp after his registration battle was a huge boost and his power-hitting gives the line-up a formidable appearance. In Yasir Arafat and Azhar Mahmood they also possess two of the finest death bowlers on the circuit. However, Somerset have played impressively in recent weeks with Championship wins against Kent and Surrey. The match against Kent went down to the wire as Joe Denly struck 149 before being trapped lbw by Charl Willoughby 21 runs short of victory. Somerset will still be without Andrew Caddick, but Alfonso Thomas has supplemented the attack alongside Willoughby and Steffan Jones. Ian Blackwell, in form with bat and ball, could well be their trump card.Leicestershire v Essex, Grace Road
Paul Grayson, the Essex coach, has backed his side to over the import-boosted Leicestershire side. The number of South Africans at Grace Road has caused plenty of debate in recent weeks, and there could be up to six on the team on Wednesday. “They have some good players and it’s no coincidence that their upturn in fortunes has come with six or seven South Africans in their squad,” Grayson said. “Whether you agree with it or not they have gone down the Kolpak route very heavily, which has led to a good start in the Championship and top place in their FPT group.Essex could field two Kolpaks – Grant Flower and Ryan ten Doeschate – while Danish Kaneria adds some spice to the spin attack. “We know we are a very good one-day side and can outplay anybody on our day. If we can play to our potential and do the basics right we know we’ll beat Leicestershire,” added Grayson.Gloucestershire v Yorkshire, Bristol
Bristol isn’t quite the one-day fortress it used to be, but Gloucestershire are still a tough side to beat on their home patch. Captain Jon Lewis has been named in the squad despite the shoulder problem he suffered against Warwickshire the Championship. The top-order is strong, with the power-hitting of Craig Spearman a potential match-winner, alongside the support of Hamish Marshall and Marcus North.Yorkshire are boosted by the return of Matthew Hoggard from his broken thumb, and it could be a rare one-day outing for him after he admitted he had issues with the white ball earlier in the season. However, Yorkshire have such a list of injuries to their attack that any experience will be welcome. Rana Naved-ul-Hasan is a long-term absentee, but it looks as though Darren Gough will patch himself up again after various “niggles” against Lancashire. Gough is desperate to finish his career with a Lord’s final, but this will be a tough test.
