Leeds: Whites eyeing move for Jens Cajuste

Leeds United are reportedly interested in a deal to sign FC Midtjylland defensive midfielder Jens Cajuste, according to Swedish media outlet Expressen.

The lowdown: ‘The future of Swedish football’

Cajuste has been with Danish side FC Midtjylland since 2018, and has made 69 appearances in total for them, having previously been on the books with Örgryte IS earlier in his career.

The midfielder is contracted with them until the summer of 2023, although it remains to be seen as to whether he’ll remain with FC Midtjylland for much longer, with the 21-year-old not short of offers.

Cajuste has also been capped five times for the Swedish national side, and he made one substitute appearance against Spain in the European Championships this year.

Football Talent Scout have previously labelled Cajuste as the future of Swedish football, before predicting that he’d receive offers from bigger clubs in the future.

“Excellent performance in an extremely important game for Midtjylland. The future of Swedish football. Danish Superliga has too many exciting talents.

“Cajuste will soon be ready to take the next step and attack one of the top 5 leagues. He will surely receive many offers in the summer.”

The latest: Leeds set to rival Premier League clubs for Cajuste

Leeds United are said to have registered their interest in signing Cajuste, according to Expressen, but they aren’t the only English team interested in a deal for the 21-year-old.

That same report claims that Newcastle United, Brentford, Wolves and Crystal Palace are also keen on signing Cajuste this summer, as they look to scoop up a talented long-term acquisition.

The verdict: Leeds have a real battle on their hands

They won’t have it all their way in the race to land Cajuste’s signature this summer.

Leeds could be a tempting proposition for the Swedish midfielder, especially whilst they’re under the management of Marcelo Bielsa.

But he’ll need to think carefully about his game time in the future, as somewhere like Brentford, Newcastle, Wolves or Crystal Palace might actually be able to offer him more minutes on a consistent basis given Leeds’ impressive rise in the last couple of seasons.

The future looks bright for Cajuste though and he seems destined to move on to pastures new at some point – perhaps he could be the perfect deputy and understudy to Kalvin Phillips?

AMIDST confusion over the impasse between the players and the International Cricket Council (ICC) over contracts for next month’s Champions Trophy in Sri Lanka, West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) chief executive Gregory Shillingford confirmed last

Tony Cozier23-Aug-2002AMIDST confusion over the impasse between the players and the International Cricket Council (ICC) over contracts for next month’s Champions Trophy in Sri Lanka, West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) chief executive Gregory Shillingford confirmed last night that not one of the 14 West Indians chosen for the tournament had yet signed."We’ve sent the forms to our representatives in St Lucia and Jamaica (where the players are currently engaged in the Red Stripe Bowl) but none has been signed," Shillingford said. But Shillingford said it was too early to say whether replacements would have to be picked for the 12-team tournament, the so-called mini World Cup that is scheduled to start September 12."The board’s position is that we will give the situation a little more time to sort itself out," he said.Trevor Phillips, president of the St Lucia Cricket Association, who is acting on behalf of the WICB, said he had presented the contracts to the relevant players on the Antigua, Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago Bowl teams but none had been returned."I handed it first to Merv Dillon and he told me that neither he nor the other players would be signing," Phillips said. The contracts were distributed to theplayers in Jamaica by Brian Breese, secretary of the Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA). But Shillingford said none had been returned.Dinanath Ramnarine, the Trinidad and Tobago and West Indies leg-spinner, who is the recently elected president of the West Indies Players Association (WIPA), is also in St Lucia. All efforts to contact him yesterday proved futile.WIPA secretary Roland Holder said in Barbados his body had advised the players against signing the contract on the advice of the Federation of International Cricketers’ Associations (FICA).This is in keeping with the general position of international players upset by the clause preventing them from promoting existing individual sponsors that rival the ICC’s official sponsors for the Champions Trophy and next year’s World Cup in South Africa.Conflicting reportsThere were conflicting reports yesterday on the latest developments in the impasse. The Indian Express newspaper reported that the ICC "admitted it had backed down on the controversial agreement" and confirmed that it would be valid only for the Champions’ Trophy".It quoted an unnamed ICC spokesman in London as stating that it had agreed to the Indian board’s proposal to limit the agreement to the Sri Lanka tournament instead of all ICC events until the 2007 World Cup in the West Indies as originally envisaged."ICC will draw up a fresh agreement for the World Cup in South Africa next year," the spokesman said.At the same time, ICC chief executive Malcolm Speed told reporters in Mumbai, where he was on separate ICC business, that the Indian players "should retract from their stubborn stand for the sake of the game and participate in full strength".Several leading Indian players, among them Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid and Virender Sehwag, have personal agreements with companies that clash with those which have paid huge sums for the rights to the Champions’ Trophy. No player from any country other than India is immediately affected but those from Australia, England, Pakistan and the West Indies have all stood behind the Indians on a matter of principle. The Indian selectors yesterday picked 25 players from whom it would name replacements if it comes to that.In Brisbane, Australian Cricket Board (ACB) chief executive James Sutherland said he was unable to guarantee a full strength team for the Champions’ Trophy. He met with the players and chief executive of the players’ association, Tim May, to discuss the issue last night. May is also joint head of FICA.May said it was impossible to speculate on what the Australian players might decide."We haven’t put any deadlines on them," he said. "They’ve got a lot of new information tonight about what we’ve been negotiating over the last week or so and we want the players to have the appropriate time to consider and digest this information."

Leeds learn Dan James price tag

An update has emerged on Leeds target Dan James, regarding how much Manchester United want for the forward.

What’s the talk?

According to The Telegraph, Manchester United want £25m for Leeds United transfer target Dan James this summer, which has caused Burnley to exit the race to win his signature.

Leeds have been tracking James for several years and reportedly recently reignited their interest in the attacker as Victor Orta looks to improve the squad ahead of next season.

Imagine him and Bamford

Orta must ensure that he can get a deal over the line for James this summer following this latest update.

He has been a long-term target and they now know exactly how much money they need to pay. The Whites chief should splash out the £25m and bring him to the club, as Marcelo Bielsa would be in dreamland if he could finally get the chance to work with him.

Speaking on The Phil Hay Show, the titular journalist said in regards to Leeds wanting James: “That’s a question for Bielsa because Bielsa is forever interested in Dan James, and you probably remember last summer that before they did the deal for Raphinha, they were looking into the possibility of bringing Dan James in on loan from Manchester United. I don’t think it was ever really a possibility because it didn’t seem as though Solskjaer wanted him to go.”

This shows that Bielsa would love to coach him, having chased him for so long. Whilst they may not have been able to sign James on loan in the summer Hay mentioned, they do now have the opportunity to complete a permanent swoop for the Welsh international.

James’ Manchester United teammate Andreas Pereira once heaped praise on the forward, labelling him as “explosive and so fast” when asked about the quickest player within the squad in a club interview.

The 23-year-old’s pace could mean that he is able to strike a lethal partnership with Patrick Bamford. James enjoyed an impressive European Championships with Wales this summer, averaging 2.5 key passes and 1.5 dribbles completed per game across four appearances, recording a WhoScored rating of 6.88.

Patrick Bamford scored 17 goals in the Premier League for Leeds and will need quality service from out wide to replicate that again next term.

Imagine James using his scintillating pace to burst down to the byline before clipping a cross to the back post for the ex-Chelsea hitman to head or volley home. This, along with Bielsa’s keen interest in James, is why Orta must secure a deal for the former Swan.
