Central demolish Otago to seal semi spot

The State Insurance Central Stags certainly roared at Queen’s Park, Invercargill today when they comprehensively defeated the State Otago Volts by seven wickets in their Shell Cup contest

Warwick Larkins18-Jan-2001The State Insurance Central Stags certainly roared at Queen’s Park, Invercargill today when they comprehensively defeated the State Otago Volts by seven wickets in their Shell Cup contest.Winning the toss and putting Otago into bat on a wicket which although covered had seen three days of wild and wet weather, Central Districts never looked back from ball one and the Otago batsmen began a procession back to the pavilion that looked like a parade of lemmings. At the end of 31.3 overs the Volts had been dismissed for a paltry 67 and truly realised what the value of winning the toss was. But, it is fair to state the the pitch while not at all satisfactory was never venomous and the Otago batsmen never really got into the mode of pushing the ball around and waiting for the bad ones to hit to the boundary.Only Warren McSkimming batting at number eight looked in any way assured, and even then only to a limited effect. Three Otago batsmen in Martyn Croy, Matthew Horne and Lee Germon were dismissed as a result of vagaries in the pitch but that could not be blamed for a total of 67 – the fourth lowest one-day total in New Zealand cricket history. The task of knocking off the 68 runs required was not a difficult chore for the Stags who found the pitch had lost most of its sting and they gleefully the victory target in 15.4 overs. It was not a game that will go down in the annals of one-day cricket memorables but it has given Central Districts a place in the semi-finals of the Shell Cup and Otago yet another exit to near the bottom of the class.

Orissa trounce MP by seven wickets, gatecrash into Ranji semis

An Orissa team sans Shiv Sunder Das and Debashis Mohanty reached theirfirst ever Ranji Trophy semifinal with a seven wicket triumph over hostsMadhya Pradesh at the Captain Roop Singh Stadium in Gwalior on Monday

Staff Reporter26-Mar-2001An Orissa team sans Shiv Sunder Das and Debashis Mohanty reached theirfirst ever Ranji Trophy semifinal with a seven wicket triumph over hostsMadhya Pradesh at the Captain Roop Singh Stadium in Gwalior on Monday.Chasing a target of 192 in a minimum of 75 overs, Orissa lost three quickwickets but an unbroken century stand between Rashmi Ranjan Parida andPravanjan Mullick helped them cruise to victory with more than ten overs tospare. In a semifinal encounter from April 5-9, Orissa will challenge fourtime Ranji Trophy champions Baroda for a place in the Ranji Trophy final.Madhya Pradesh began their second innings on the fifth morning at 153/6,leading by 111 with four wickets in hand. The unbroken seventh wicketpartnership between wicket keeper Ankit Sriwastava and skipper ChandrakantPandit swelled to 64 before the former gave seam bowler Mullick his thirdwicket. Pandit stuck around for a little longer, top scoring with precisely50 (58 balls, 6 fours), before being stumped by G Gopal off leg spinnerJagannath Das.Trailing by 42 on the first innings, Madhya Pradesh’s only hope lay inforcing an outright victory. Pandit closed shutters on 233/9 at the fall ofRajesh Chauhan to give his four man spin attack an opportunity to bowl outOrissa on a fifth day wicket. MP made their intentions clear, opening thebowling with off spinner Chauhan and leg spinner Narendra Hirwani.Orissa openers PK Das and Suresh Kumar adopted an ultra-cautious approachwhich failed to yield dividends as both fell in successive overs to Chauhanand Hirwani respectively, leaving the score at 26/2 in the 20th over. SoonOrissa slumped to 52/3 as skipper Sanjay Raul fell to Hirwani and at thatmoment their thoughts must have focused on saving the match rather thantaking up the gauntlet and winning outright. But Parida and Mullick, with contrasting half centuries, fashioned aremarkable 140 run stand in 33.1 overs which turned the course of thematch. Parida followed up his first innings 162 with a tenacious 64 (150balls, 9 fours). Mullick on the other hand made a positively exuberant 74in just 86 balls, slamming seven boundaries and two sixes. Pandit rang inthe bowling changes using off spinner Abbas Ali and leg spinner YogeshGolwalkar as well as belatedly bringing on his new ball bowlers HarvinderSodhi and Devender Bundela. But all his manipulation was to no avail asOrissa coasted home.

Outsider Picks for Euro 2021

Euro 2021 is around the corner and the tournament is set to receive record viewing figures, with the expanded competition welcoming more countries than ever before.

The event has a rich history of providing celebration stories for underdogs, from Greece’s unprecedented win in 2004 right through to Portugal’s 2016 victory despite not winning a single group match.

With a whopping 24 teams taking part in this year’s event, there’s more chance than ever that favourites will be undone by surprise results and it’s wise to expect the unexpected.

There can be real benefits for bettors in backing longshots as the odds often outweigh the likeliness of the result. OLBG are masters at finding the best value Euro bets, and they’ve created a list of tempting enhanced offers for punters to back.

With bookies creating new markets for their sites daily, there’s often benefit to be found in some higher odds markets. Here we pick out which markets are the best outsiders to consider backing at Euro 2021.

Best Young Player – Declan Rice

At 20/1, there is real value on Declan Rice to be named the Best Young Player of the Tournament at Euro 2021.

England are one of the favourites for the tournament and Rice is a nailed-on starter at the heart of Gareth Southgate’s England squad. Rice himself has had a breakthrough campaign which has seen him lead his West Ham side into qualification for European football next season, despite being written off earlier on. Chelsea are poised to make an offer for Rice which will be a blow for West Ham, but it’s rumoured their scouts already have a replacement lined up.

Central midfielders are often preferred by panellists when awards are given for player of the tournament, too. The inaugural award was given to Portugal’s Renato Sanches, and the youngster had a similar role to Rice, supporting a talented attacking line. If England do well, that will be a direct reflection on Rice’s ability to control and dominate the centre of the pitch.

The same logic is applied to the Player of the Tournament award. Every Player of the Tournament has been a central midfielder, Rice’s natural position, with the exception of Euro 2016 which was won by Antoine Griezmann.

Concede Most Tournament Goals – Hungary

Hungary are priced at 4/1 to concede the most goals at the tournament and despite their relatively impressive recent form, this looks like a certainty.

Hungary have been unfortunate to have been drawn in Group F – this year’s Group of Death – alongside three genuine contenders for the Euro 2021 title. With fixtures against France, Germany and Portugal, Hungary will be lucky to get even a point from the three group games. Marco Rossi’s side will come up against some of the greatest strikers on the planet in Kylian Mbappe, Timo Werner and Cristiano Ronaldo, all of which will be eager to add to their bulging international goal records.

Hungary don’t have any players who are widely known and have an inexperienced backline with little history of playing against quality opposition. It is likely that goal difference will be a key factor when deciding who progresses to the knockout phase of the competition for this group and, as a result, it’s expected that Hungary will not be let off the hook at any stage.

Top Assists – Jack Grealish

Jack Grealish has benefited from an exceptional season as Aston Villa captain and the progress of the team is clearly down to his influence and ability.

Grealish is fleet of foot and full of flair – perfect for a creative force and one who can create chances from nothing. The 25-year-old was the most fouled player in the Premier League, and that’s testimony to his trickery. If a goal is scored directly from the free kick or penalty which Grealish has earned, the assist is registered to him and that’s one key reason why the lofty 16/1 odds bookies have on him to finish as the Top Assister are tempting.

England have a relatively simple group in Euro 2021 playing Croatia, Scotland and Czech Republic in Group D. The talented forward line of Harry Kane, Jadon Sancho and Phil Foden should attract opposition defences and allow pockets of space for Grealish to operate in which he wouldn’t usually have when playing for Villa.

A good performance in Euro 2021 could also put Grealish in the shop window and attract a bid from one of Europe’s top clubs. The playmaker has already been linked with a summer move to Manchester City but it wouldn’t be a surprise to see other suiters try to acquire his signature.

Baroda post an imposing total against Orissa

Staff Reporter06-Apr-2001Baroda, inspired by a career best first class score of 181 by Nayan Mongia, finished with an imposing first innings total of 568 on the second day of their Ranji Trophy semifinal against Orissa at the Gujarat State Fertilizer Corporation ground in Baroda on Friday. By close, the visitors had just commenced their long haul by scoring four without loss in one over.Resuming at 319 for two, Baroda did well to get to their final total. Mongia and skipper Jacob Martin resumed their third wicket association but at 342, Martin was leg before to Jayachandra for 86. The former India player batted almost four hours, faced 172 balls and hit 13 fours. Tushar Arothe joined Mongia and the two proceeded to figure in a fourth wicket partnership of 75 runs off 16 overs before the India wicketkeeper was finally dismissed. Mongia, whose previous best first class score was 165, was caught by Parida off Mohanty. He batted 7-1/2 hours, faced 317 balls and hit 25 fours and a six. There was no respite for the Orissa bowlers for Arothe and HR Jadhav (21) then added 47 runs for the fifth wicket off 16.4 overs. Then Sanjay Raul got among the wickets and Baroda slid from 464 for four to 499 for eight. Among those dismissed was Arothe who made 86. In a stay of 3-1/2 hours, he faced 156 ballsand hit 15 fours and a six. However the tired Orissa bowlers encountered one last, unexpected hurdle with Valmik Buch (29) and Irfan Pathan (40 not out) adding 56 runs off 24 overs for the ninth wicket. The Orissa bowlers had a trying time in adverse conditions against a strong batting line-up. Mohanty sent down 41 overs to take three for 110. Two other bowlers conceded more than 100 runs – medium pacer Ajay Barik who captured one for 126 off 26 overs and off spinner Sanjay Satpathy who finished with two for 120 off 38 overs. The toil of the Orissa bowlers ie best exemplified by the fact that the Baroda innings lasted 760 minutes and 177 overs.

Ball: Carlo Ancelotti failed at Everton - Exclusive

In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, former Everton defender Michael Ball has hit out at Carlo Ancelotti, suggesting that he failed during his short spell at Goodison Park.

The Italian recently departed Everton to make a shock return to Real Madrid following Zinedine Zidane’s decision to walk away from the Spanish giants.

Given his profile and what he has accomplished in the game, big expectations came with Ancelotti’s Everton appointment at the end of 2019.

He also brought in a couple big-name players in James Rodriguez and Allan, only adding to those expectations. However, in the end, Ancelotti was only able to guide the Toffees to a 10th-placed finish in his only full season with the club.

“I think he’s bottled the whole project,” Ball told FFC. “I feel it was a great opportunity for him to show what a top manager he is. He’s won trophies everywhere, but he’s always had the wealth and he’s always had the players.

“Could he bring Everton from a mid-table team to the European spots? That was his ambition; that was his target. He failed to do that.”

Quite frankly, Ancelotti’s exit was disappointing, especially given that he has been so vocal with his criticism of the failed European Super League, something his new employers were at the heart of.

That being said, understandably, players and managers will always find it hard to say no to a club of Real Madrid’s size.

Fulham and Birmingham eye Windass

News has emerged about Sheffield Wednesday forward Josh Windass, regarding interest from Championship clubs.

What’s the talk?

According to the Sheffield Star, Championship sides Fulham and Birmingham are both interested in signing Sheffield Wednesday forward Josh Windass. Both sides are said to believe that they can strike a bargain deal for Windass due to Wednesday’s off-field issues in regards to their finances.

The report claims that Wednesday manager Darren Moore is a big fan of Windass and would like him to stay at the club next season. However, it does not state Wednesday’s official position on whether or not the club are open to selling Windass this summer, nor does it say what Wednesday believe Windass is worth.

Sky Sports pundit and former England international Sue Smith praised the forward earlier this year, labelling Windass as a constant “threat”. She told Sky Sports, as transcribed by Yorkshire Live:

“He’s just a constant runner and a constant threat.”

Chansiri must avoid mistake

Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri must avoid a grave mistake this summer with Windass. Amongst all the upheaval on and off the pitch, Wednesday should not be looking to sell their top goalscorer from the season just gone.

A number of first-team players will be leaving the club at the end of the month, including Joost van Aken, Elias Kachunga, Tom Lees, Joey Pelupessy, Adam Reach, Jordan Rhodes and Keiren Westwood.

This shows how depleted Moore’s squad already is ahead of the club’s return for pre-season next month. Chansiri sanctioning an exit for Windass would be the icing on a cake that Moore doesn’t want to eat.

Windass scored nine and assisted five goals in the Championship last season, which made him the club’s top scorer and joint-most creative outlet in the second tier. The former Rangers man proved his quality at that level and showed enough to suggest that he could thrive in League One and play a key role in any potential promotion push for the club next term.

The £10k-per-week ace, therefore, needs to stay at the club next season if Wednesday and Chansiri harbour any ambitions of returning to the Championship at the first attempt.

Selling him now could be a major error by Chansiri and he needs to make sure that Windass is still in Moore’s squad next month and that he’s ready to play his part in the 2021/22 League One campaign.

Moore has already lost the aforementioned players due to their contract situations, but Windass still has another year on his deal and Wednesday should be looking to make the most out of him over the next 12 months.

AND in other news, Get it done: Chansiri must seal SWFC swoop for £1.5k-p/w prospect, Moore will love it…
