Everton have been no strangers to spending big in recent years but if they are to finally break into the Premier League’s top six, they will have to spend again this summer.

One of Carlo Ancelotti’s biggest priorities in the transfer market is to sign a winger. Strangely enough, they could find that in a player they’ve targeted for a number of years.

What’s the word?

It wouldn’t be a transfer window without Everton considering a move for Wilfried Zaha.

Back in 2019, the Toffees planted a jaw-dropping bid of £70m plus Cenk Tosun and James McCarthy but it was amazingly rejected by Crystal Palace.

Ancelotti’s men were interested in the Ivorian again last summer but reports of a fresh switch are beginning to emerge again.

According to Goal, Everton are set to battle Spurs to sign Zaha in a £40m chase.

However, a deal could be complicated by a new manager arriving and Ebere Eze’s long-term injury at Selhurst Park.

Bolasie 2.0

This deal has plenty of similarities to the one that brought Yannick Bolasie to Goodison Park back in 2016 for £25m.

A lively trickster, Bolasie had set the Premier League alight with some devastating moments of play for Palace.

Unfortunately, his career tailed off after his move to Merseyside. The winger only played 32 games for the Toffees before an ACL injury ruined his stay.

He looked promising but ultimately failed to thrive at Goodison.

Zaha is comparable in terms of their style of play but hopefully, he’d be able to avoid the treatment table if he made the same move from London.

He has been a wonderful servant for Palace and on his day, he is one of the most electrifying players in the Premier League.

If he did pen terms with Ancelotti’s side, he’d be a marvellous capture. Speaking about the forward after being linked with Arsenal, Mikel Arteta said this term: “I think he’s a terrific player and I think the impact he’s had in the Premier League in the last few years has been phenomenal. His ability to create chances on his own is unique.”

Ian Wright, meanwhile, described him as “unstoppable” after a clash with Norwich last season.

It’s certainly easy to see why. Zaha’s dribbling stats are remarkable. Throughout his career, the 28-year-old has amassed 3.6 dribbles per game. That’s fairly similar to Bolasie’s tally of 2.9 during his final term with Palace.

Combine that number with the goals Zaha has now added to his game – he netted 11 this term – and it makes for a very attractive signing.

Marcel Brands must do his best to finally lure the Ivory Coast international to Everton.

A novela envolvendo a permanência de Victor Luís teve um final feliz na última sexta-feira, com o acerto oficializado entre o lateral e o Botafogo. E dois foram os principais motivos da permanência do jogador de 23 anos em General Severiano para 2017: o desejo próprio do atleta e a ação do presidente Carlos Eduardo Pereira na hora de procurar o empresário de Victor e fechar negócio.

Todo o imbróglio anterior para a demora da negociação ser concretizada se deu pela falta de entendimento entre a diretoria e os representantes do jogador, em uma reunião que seria para sacramentar o negócio. Antes próximo, Victor Luís acabou sendo descartado pelo gerente de futebol do Botafogo, Antônio Lopes, pelo desacordo em relação aos valores pedidos.

Então aí entrou o presidente alvinegro. Era desejo de ambas as partes a permanência do jogador. Mesmo com sondagens de outros clubes, como Grêmio, Sport e Ponte Preta, Victor queria ficar no clube. Depois da falha de comunicação entre ambas as partes – com direito a carta do jogador por meio do seu Instagram – o presidente Carlos Eduardo Pereira tomou a frente do negócio e fechou com o empresário do lateral na manhã da última sexta-feira.

Um ponto importante é que Victor Luís tem os seus direitos divididos (60% do Palmeiras e 40% de um grupo de empresários). Toda confusão se deu também porque, no momento em que a diretoria entendia ser o da resolução, o grupo de empresários também quis elevar a pedida e lucrar com o negócio. Uma mudança na legislação esportiva poderia fazer os 40% relativos a este grupo serem anulados. Havia diferença salarial entre os desejos do Botafogo e do atleta, mas não era impeditivo. Quando clube e Victor fizeram valer o desejo mútuo, o consenso foi feito. E logo depois, com a compra da passagem de avião para Victor Luís e para o pai dele, já se sabia que o desfecho seria positivo tanto para o clube quanto ao atleta.

Victor já assinou a renovação com o Palmeiras e a extensão de empréstimo com o Botafogo por um ano. Com a renovação de empréstimo e a contratação de Gilson, o clube agora deve focar suas atenções na contratação de atacantes para fechar o elenco que iniciará a pré-temporada alvinegra no próximo dia 11 deste mês. A estreia na temporada é no dia 25, pelo Campeonato Carioca.

Former Southampton vice-chairman Les Reed has lifted the lid on his relationship with the club’s owner Katharina Liebherr, confirming that he enjoyed working with her.

Liebherr currently has a 20 per cent stake of the club, having taken ownership of the club in 2010 after the death of her father, Markus.

Reed was first appointed by Saints in 2010, coming in as the Head of Football Development and Support, before later becoming vice-chairman.

Reed has revealed that he was given carte blanche to work largely alone, having been entrusted with a budget by Liebherr, and he says he never needed to double-check with her over any deals, with the decision instead made by himself.

And the 68-year-old, who left the club in 2018, has nothing but praise for the work that Liebherr has done during her time with the club.

Her 20 per cent stake, per The Athletic, includes a veto of any proposed takeover of the club, so she will remain in the background for the foreseeable future, even if she isn’t a front-facing figure at this point.

Speaking exclusively to The Transfer Tavern, Reed said: “The relationship I had with Katharina Liebherr, is she’s been absolutely magnificent for that football club. Just when she thought she was getting some money out, it needed to go back in, and she’s done that all the time.

“When [Nicola] Cortese left, the relationship I had then with Katharina Liebherr meant that we didn’t have a chain of command that we had to get checked and double checked. There was just fantastic trust and therefore decision making was quick, easy and I could act.

“I could sit in a meeting with an agent or with a club about buying a player and make that decision there. I wouldn’t have to go ‘right, I need to go and check with the owner, I need to go and check with the CEO, I need to go and check with the chairman’.

“I could make that decision because she had trusted me to work within the budget and never go over it, which I never did. I could make those decisions.”

Wolves have given the ‘green light’ for Dion Sanderson to make a permanent exit in the summer transfer window, according to Football Insider.

Former boss Nuno Espirito Santo apparently doubted the defender’s Premier League prospects and reckoned he was better suited to the Championship.

The Portuguese manager left the club at the end of the season, perhaps raising hopes that the Sunderland loanee would be given a chance in 2021/22, but the report claimed that the change in the dugout will make little difference to Sanderson’s situation.

It’s claimed that Wolves value at him at just over £2m, with only a year remaining on his contract. Sunderland are looking to strike a permanent deal for the 21-year-old, but there is competition from clubs in the Championship after a campaign in which he won the admiration of numerous Black Cats supporters for his fine performances.

Sanderson has played one game for Wolves’ senior side, featuring in a 2-1 Carabao Cup defeat to Reading in October 2019.

O volante Cícero foi apresentado nesta segunda-feira em Bradenton, nos Estados Unidoso, como reforço do São Paulo para 2017. O jogador, que assinou por dois anos, fará sua segunda passagem pelo clube – atuou entre 2011 e 2012. E disse que saiu de uma zona de conforto no Rio de Janeiro, onde atuava no Fluminense, para defender o Tricolor paulista.

– Eu chego muito motivado. Saí do conforto do Rio de Janeiro, minha mulher é de lá. Meu filho adorava ir para a escolinha, mas eu acho que o jogador de futebol não pode viver numa zona de conforto. E eu tenho um desafio na minha vida, durante uns três quatro anos venho buscando isso na minha vida, de a cada ano tentar ganhar um título porque acho que o jogador para continuar em evidência tem de manter o rendimento de médio para alto. Então é esse pensamento que tenho para o São Paulo e muito motivado por estar voltando – afirmou o jogador, que vestirá a camisa 8, em entrevista coletiva nos Estados Unidos.

Cícero foi uma contratação a pedido do técnico Rogério Ceni. O comandante pensa em utilizá-lo como volante. E é a posição onde o jogador prefere atuar, embora se coloque à disposição para realizar outras funções. Ceni acredita que ele pode jogar na armação ou até de falso 9.

– Meia-armador eu nunca fui. Se precisar que eu faça, eu faço, como todo mundo sabe que eu eu faço outras funções. Mas já faz uns dois anos que venho me firmando como volante, não falo nem segundo volante porque hoje em dia não tem primeiro nem segundo. Mas, vai ser conversado, porque o time tem de ter o encaixe. Se você vai encaixar como atacante ou como latera, só o tempo vai dizer. O mais importante é o time criar uma identidade, que assim faz ficar forte. Lógico que eu tenho a preferência de jogar por volante, onde eu vim me destacando nos últimos anos. Mas depende da consciêntização tática, isso é só no dia a dia que vai ter isso – analisou Cícero.

Uma das motivações de Cícero para retornar ao São Paulo foi a presença de Rogério Ceni como técnico. Ele acredita que o clube pode voltar a conquistar títulos com o ídolo no comando e já vislumbra o momento de erguer a taça ao lado do ex-companheiro de time.

– Eu estou muito feliz de estar com ele, porque é um cara vitorioso, e por que não ele ser vitorioso como treinador? Então, imagina todo mundo se abraçando no fim do ano com vários títulos e com o Rogério como treinador… É uma satisfação enorme, e você vai juntar o útil ao agradável, porque o que ele representa para esse clube, a gente representa muito abaixo – afirmou o volante.

O São Paulo estreia na Florida Cup na próxima quinta-feira, às 22h, contra o River Plate. Cícero tem treinado como volante e pode aparecer como titular.
