O Diário Oficial da União publicou, na manhã desta terça-feira, a oficialização do patrocínio do Flamengo com a Caixa Econômica Federal. O contrato, renovado por mais um ano, renderá R$ 25 milhões ao clube, conforme está inscrito no próprio comunicado. O banco estatal segue como patrocinador master do Rubro-Negro, algo que já acontece desde 2013.

Nesta terça-feira, está prevista uma viagem do presidente Eduardo Bandeira de Mello a Brasília para homologar o patrocínio. Desde o fim do ano passado as partes já estavam acordadas, embora a oficialização tenha sido apenas nesta terça.

A diretoria do Flamengo segue em busca de mais parceiros, já que o contrato com a Viton 44 (costas e manga) e Jeep (barra traseira) se encerrou no fim de dezembro. O clube ainda negocia renovação com a montadora.

Sunderland booked their place in the last 16 of the EFL Trophy on Tuesday evening as Lee Johnson secured his first win as the Black Cats’ new boss, defeating League Two Oldham Athletic 2-1 on their own patch.

When certain players make the jump from Championship football to the Premier League they suddenly become a liability.

There are some prime examples throughout the years, players who seemingly make a better career for themselves in the second tier.

You only need to look at Anthony Knockaert and Matej Vydra. The former has contributed to 72 goals in the Championship compared to just 12 in the Premier League. Vydra, meanwhile, has 87 goal involvements in the second tier. His record in the top-flight is just 12 as well.

This is similar for Helder Costa, a dynamic winger capable of ingenious moments. Those are all too infrequent, however.

The Portuguese is one of a number of players who haven’t managed to elevate their qualities on the big stage and is strikingly similar to Knockaert.

In the Championship for Wolves, he is a ball of energy and has provided 39 goal contributions at that level. In the Premier League, though, he’s scored twice and contributed four assists.

Costa is a man who has had a troublesome few years and it begs the question, why did Leeds spend £15m on him?

Considering his second-tier record, landing him on loan last season was certainly not a bad idea. However, he never really reached the dizzy heights he did in the Midlands, netting only five times in all competitions at Elland Road.

It was form that saw him mercilessly slated. Former Whites man Noel Whelan said: “Costa has much more to give. He has been a bystander at times. He needs to be far more involved and much more effective in his defensive play.”

The trouble is, Costa hasn’t given much more to this Leeds side.

His start to the 2020/21 campaign was actually fairly impressive. He assisted a goal against Liverpool on the opening weekend and then bagged twice versus Fulham just a week later. Since then, though, he has provided the one assist.

Clearly, Costa is being found out again. The 26-year-old hasn’t played since the defeat against West Ham and rumours are starting to circulate over his future. Kevin Phillips commented this week: “It is a big statement that he has not featured in the last two games. It suggests to me that come January, if there is an offer, Bielsa may look at it.”

Of course, it would be a drastic measure to sell so soon, but there are certainly reasons to agree with Phillips here.

The fact of the matter is that Leeds’ investment in Costa has been nothing short of a financial disaster. Once the season comes to an end, he will have cost Andrea Radrizzani in the region of £18m if you consider his yearly salary of £1.69m.

That means that if you divide the number of Leeds goals he has – six – by his overall value, he has set them back £3m per goal.

It’s evident why they could do with offloading Costa. He is bleeding the club dry.

When Tottenham and Leeds came to blows on Saturday it was an unrelenting difference in style.

Jose Mourinho has become about scoring an early goal and then defending what you have. For Leeds, it’s all about attacking from minute one until the final kick of the game.

Even in matches against the top sides, Marcelo Bielsa’s men have utilised that strategy but it didn’t particularly pay off this weekend. It may not have been the 6-2 drubbing they were on the end of at Old Trafford but they were still played off the park in a 3-0 defeat.

Spurs were excellent and once again it was Heung-min Son and Harry Kane that put the opposition to the sword.

However, the true hero wasn’t anyone in Mourinho’s attack. Instead, it was left-back Ben Davies.

The former Swansea man hasn’t exactly had the best of seasons and that’s typified by quotes from pundit Noel Whelan, someone who tore the defender apart for his performance against Liverpool.

“That’s embarrassing for any senior pro, appalling, really, even against a side who dominate possession and pen you into your own half all the time,” he said.

That being said, Davies has bounced back and now looks a man reborn, putting in a number of convincing displays for the Lilywhites. He was assured in the draw with Wolves but was even better on this occasion.

Compared to Matt Doherty on the right, the Welshman dealt with the Leeds attack competently and won a colossal 85.7% of the duels he contested – meaning he lost just one.

Everything Raphinha threw at him, he seemed to deal with. Davies also completed 87% of his passes and produced two key passes, proving a threat in the left-hand channel.

His impact in that third of the pitch could have been better but what was most pleasing, was that his defensive display was impressive when Sergio Reguilon was missing.

The left-back hasn’t always been particularly well-received but he’s now starting to find more consistency. Long may it continue.
