Everton Director of Football Marcel Brands can save Carlo Ancelotti’s Goodison Park natives from rushing in the winter to add depth behind James Rodriquez by forging a late move to sign Watford ace Ismaila Sarr, despite downplayed links.

According to the Liverpool Echo, Everton have limited interest in signing Sarr during the final week of the domestic transfer market, having decided with Ancelotti that efforts will predominantly be spent attempting to offload those deemed surplus to requirements.

Muhamed Besic and Yannick Bolasie are expected to court Championship moves after failing to secure deals before Monday’s international Deadline Day, while the Toffees remain open to loans or sales for Under 23 stars Beni Baningime, Callum Connolly, Nathan Broadhead and perineal outcast Matty Pennington.

Manchester United have previously been linked with a move for Sarr following Watford’s relegation from the Premier League last term, however the Red Devils have recently opted against pursuing a deal as the Hornets would only be interested in a permanent transfer rather than the loan move proposed by Executive Vice-Chairman Ed Woodward.

Liverpool, likewise, have been touted as a potential suitor, although Watford have been set on a £40million asking price for the 22-year-old signed a year ago for the same figure, and given that they’ve just signed Diogo Jota, it seems unlikely that they’d spend big on Sarr too.

January action needed now

While Everton are not expected to go big in the final week of the domestic transfer window either, there is a slight expectation that Brands could consider a change of heart and spend funds in the winter market following two years with less than £1m spent in the January sales.

The right-wing position at Goodison Park is one area where the Toffees may need to explore signings in the mid-season market, which is just 86 days away, as Rodriguez is currently the only natural option for the role with Anthony Gordon and Alex Iwobi better suited on the left.

Sarr, therefore, could be the ideal option to sign now and land the depth in a key position sooner rather than later, potentially after witnessing niggling injuries derail Everton’s push for European football.

Watford benefited from five goals and four assists over 28 appearances during Sarr’s sole Premier League campaign, similar numbers to what Richarlison achieved in the 2017/18 campaign (five goals, five assists) before his £50m transfer from Vicarage Road.

The Hornets’ £25,000-per-week forward also created five big chances that were not converted and spurned six himself, per SofaScore, showing that there is still room for Sarr to develop under Ancelotti, who can tap into the Senegalese star’s average 1.1 shots, 0.9 key balls, 0.6 accurate crosses and 1.7 successful dribbles per game from last season’s top-flight campaign.

O Coritba também tenta o retorno de Joel e Willian Farias. O atacante camaronês, de 22 anos, destacou-se no Londrina em 2014 e logo foi contratado pelo Coxa. Após um bom Brasileirão, acertou com o Cruzeiro em 2015, mas não teve uma sequência na Raposa, atuando em 24 partidas e marcando três gols.

Já Willian Farias foi revelado no Coritiba em 2009 e defendeu o clube até 2013. No Cruzeiro, foi campeão brasileiro em 2014, mas perdeu espaço em 2015, atuando apenas em 15 jogos.

Glasgow Rangers continue their quest for Europa League glory with a trip to face Standard Liege in the Netherlands tonight. The 54-time Scottish champions have a strong track record in the European tournament and will be hoping their recent win over arch-rivals Celtic will give them the edge in this clash at the Stade Maurice Dufrasne.

Standard Liege are one of the most successful teams in Belgium, as they have won the Belgian league ten times so far, most recently in the 2008/09 season. Managed by former Nottingham Forest manager Philippe Montanier, they should be a tough test for the Gers.

As is often the case, Allan McGregor will resume his rightful place between the sticks, which means Jon McLaughlin will most likely remain on the bench. The veteran goalkeeper should start behind an unchanged back four from the first Old Firm derby of the season including Borna Barisic, Filip Helander, Connor Goldson and James Tavernier.

Cedric Itten missed the Europa League qualifier against Galatasaray due to a knee injury, but he seems to have shaken off any lingering concerns after coming off the bench at Celtic Park.

And the 3-cap Swiss international could be in contention to start at the Stade Maurice Dufrasne as shot-shy Alfredo Morelos failed to register a single one all game, let alone one on target against Celtic at the weekend, as per SofaScore.

Liverpool are currently in a delightful dilemma that sees them torn between who to field up at the top of their attack. Roberto Firmino and Diogo Jota are currently at the forefront of a lot of debate as the Reds move forward in their holding Premier League campaign.

The Portuguese attacker has proven to be a superb signing already after scoring six goals in four appearances. Jota bagged his first hat-trick for the Reds against Atalanta in the week and has matched the record of Anfield legend Luis Garcia, scoring a goal in his first three Anfield appearances.

However, despite his impressive start, Chris Kirkland believes that Firmino is still the man for the job.

Speaking to Football FanCast, the former Liverpool goalkeeper said that he believes “Jurgen backs him [Firmino] to the hill”. Indeed, despite his irregular run of goalscoring performances and struggle to find the net, the Brazilian has established himself as an integral part of this title-winning team.

“As long as the team’s winning, the problems will become if they start drawing games or losing games and your striker’s not scoring goals,” Kirkland continued. “That’s when he’ll look at it. But while the team’s winning and while they’re successful like they are, no he won’t be worried about it at all.”

The beauty of Liverpool’s front three is that Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah’s clinical eye for a goal allows Firmino to free roam and drop deep to create chances. Adopting the lesser seen ‘false nine’ role, the Reds boast a unique but extremely effective attack.

With Jota now also in the ranks, a new Klopp formation could be unearthed. The 23-year-old has shown his confidence on both wings and up front as a No.9. Both his and Salah’s versatility could make for a very exciting relationship on the pitch, without the need to cast aside Firmino.

“We know what Firmino does for the team and eventually he’ll start banging the goals in, there’s no doubt about it at all,” said Kirkland. The £64.8million-rated striker has one goal and two assists in the Premier League so far this season, but those stats are just a slice of the bigger Firmino picture.

Under a new and exciting attacking formation, the 29-year-old will undoubtedly flourish and prove a lot of recent doubters wrong.
